  • ITunes on new Mac Mini does not show shared libraries on network or songs on NAS drive

iTunes on new Mac Mini does not show shared libraries on network or songs on NAS drive
The latest version of iTunes on a 3-month old Mac Mini (8 gig RAM, OS 10.10.2) does not see any of the shared iTunes libraries on a  MacBookPro (MBP) (OS 10.9.5) and a 14-month old Mac Mini (OS 10.9.5). And a network shared drive/media server does not appear as well. I have a Gigabite Ethernet G4 and on it, the MPB and the "old" mini I can see the various shared music libraries and NAS, but not on the new Mini.
The little house with a music note inside it that I see on the upper left corner of the iTunes 12.1 window on my MBP does not appear on iTunes 12.1 on the new Mac Mini. I have gone through all the iTunes preferences and can not find where I can turn on this feature. The new Mac Mini is on the local network and I can reach the internet successfully.
I have been using iTunes since its beginning (still have a PowerTower Pro with a working copy of SoundJam), so I am not a newbie, but this has me baffled.

May I add, that I gave full rights to the user at the Mac Mini to access and change data on the server drive for ITunes Media.

  • Mac Mini won't read external hard drive

Hello, I have an external Toshiba hard drive and my Mac Mini will not read it.  It was originally used on Windows.  I plugged the hard drive into my Macbook and it worked as a read-only device.  I can take stuff off of it but can not write stuff onto it on my Macbook.  I want to use it so I can back up files on my Mac Mini, but it will not read it.  I know I have to format it to make it writable with Mac, but I want to make it a read only device on my Mac Mini because I want to back up all the data already on it and my Mac Mini has 400gb of its hard drive available.  How can I get my Mac Mini to read the Hard Drive?

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

A year ago I brought a 1 TB hard drive (My Passport), I have not used it for over 4 months and now when I use the USB cord to connect it to my mac, it does not register the hard drive.  Does anyone know why this is happening?

The beeps could be caused by something as simple as a loose internal wire or connection.  If it is under warranty (not sure how long that is, as WD drives range from 1 to 5 years depending on the model's series - I think "my passport" drives are 3 years) you could contact WD and ask them about it.
If it is out of warranty, you could also try opening the case and check the connections - the drive may be fine, and there have been posts on TomsHardware forums of people getting the beeps, opening up the case and the drive is fine, just some wire worked loose.

  • One Drive on Mac Mini Server not indexing - no spotlight or finder results

I have two drives on my Mac mini server. No RAID, etc. They are factory config 500G each.
The "main" drive has all the applications, desktop, etc on it and indexes fine, I can search or spotlight with no problem.
Anything on the other disk works fine, but is not searchable. Is there a setting that I have turned off search on that other drive? Is there a way to force a re-index, etc.

Look in System Preferences > Spotlight > privacy tab > See if the drive is listed in the exclusion list. If so highlight and press the "-" icon below the list to allow indexing. It will start immediately after you remove it from this list.

  • Mac Mini server 2010 (no modifications) Panics & Drive issues

    Hey guys,
I've been having some issues with a 2010 Mini server (stock 4gb with no modifications) It's crashing at least daily, sometimes greyscreen panics, sometimes retaining mouse input, but nothing responding that requires disk use. (You can move windows around etc but not load anything that isn't already visible or interact with finder)
I've had issues with one of the hard drives before with it disappearing from disk utility (even booted into command line) , and system profiler giving a "There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices" error.
I've had it in at the genius bar before, they found nothing wrong and had the drives mount fine. I had put it down to a lose connection as the guy said he had reseated the drives and had no problems.
Anyway, like I said its been crashing pretty much daily so I decided to bite the bullet and erase & reinstall the OS, and that led me to new error logs to work with!
What do you think? I should also note it was installed from a usb superdrive (the ones which came out with the Macbook Air's)
    error log file: http://d.pr/xYok

I had been running my Mac Mini Server with both drives striped as RAID 0 up until a few weeks ago. In the middle of the night the Mac Mini Server rebooted and when I tried to login the next morning, it never finished. I booted from my backup clone drive and ran Disk First Aid on the RAID volume and it reported that my only choice was to reformat. Since it's kind of risky to be running a striped array anyway, I chose to reformat as individual drives.
After rearranging everything so the data would fit on the two volumes, I started having some problems with my media drive that I use for video editing. Disk First Aid didn't report any serious problems, but I downloaded SMART Utility and it reported the drive is FAILING. So, I have lost all confidence in the second drive (lower) and have an SSD on order to set up as my boot volume as a replacement.
BTW, when I called Apple about this problem, they said I could take the Mac Mini Server into an Apple Store and it would take 3-5 days for them to evaluate it and repair, if necessary. Since the closest Apple Store is 65 miles away and I can't do without the server for that long, I'm eating the cost of the failed drive and I guess I'll just live with that. But it doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the other drive and this isn't the first problem I've had with this Mac Mini Server.

  • Windows 7 and Mac Mini Server not connecting

I'm running a small design studio in Central Asia. For four years we've had a Mac Mini Server (Snow Leopard/Lion), working with three Macs, and two PCs (Windows XP) connecting, sharing files and accessing accounting software without any issues.
Due to Windows XP being discontinued we upgraded the PCs to Windows 7 Ultimate (it was the best that was available legally locally). The Windows machines both continued to connect to the server, although getting it to work initially was harder than with XP.
Our Mac Mini Server showed signs of dying, so this week we purchased a new Mac Mini Server with Mavericks (10.9.3). The macs in the office can see it fine, however the Windows 7 machines are unable to see the server on the network or access using the smb path. They can access the old server using smb, however in the network control panel, the old server is also invisible.
The server has SMB/AFP enabled. The Windows 7 machines are set to recognise networks and supposedly therefore to see others. They are failing to do either. It seems like both MS and Apple changed the way they communicate pretty significantly.
How can I get the Windows 7 machine talking with the new Mac Mini Server?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Richard

The problem of the machines connecting seems to have solved itself today - with one small tweak to the setup.
I inserted an underscore (_) instead of spaces into the Mac Server name, and although the Windows 7 machines still can't see the server they can now connect using SMB.
I can't believe something so small kept me so flummoxed for so long....

  • MacBook not showing external hard drive connected to Air Port Extreme

I have a MacBook 5.2 running Mac OS X Version 10.5.7. I am running a wireless network Air Port Extreme router Version 7.4.2. I have connected a 1 TB Western Digital 10EAVS External hard drive and a printer to the Air Port Extreme router via a USB 2 hub. My MacBook sees and I am able to utilize the printer, but the Western Digital 1 TB External drive does not show up. I can see the 1 TB External drive via the Air Port Application setup, but it is not showing up on my desktop or in Utilities/Disk Utilities. I have connected the External drive directly to the USB port on my MacBook, and the drive showed up on my desktop instantly. I partitioned the External drive into two partitions and ran Time Machine which successfully backed up my MacBook. I then disconnected the External hard drive from my MacBook and reconnected it to another USB port in the hub connected to the Air Port Extreme. Once again, my MacBook does not see the External hard drive. I can see the External hard drive via the Air Port Extreme application right down to the two individual partitions. I even removed the USB hub and plugged the External hard drive directly into the Air Port Extreme router, but my MacBook still did not see the hard drive. I've restored version 7.4 and 7.4.1 on the Air Port Extreme, but it did not help. Does anyone have any insight what settings might need to be changed on my MacBook to allow it to connect to the External hard drive while it is plugged into the Air Port Extreme wireless router?

Do you have an older "dome" style AEBS or the rectangular model? The former will not work with TM. Early versions of the former may not work until you enable them to see a TM drive by doing the following:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command and press RETURN:
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
The drive should now be accessible via TM.

  • Does not show my hard drive when i try to install Tiger...

I have a Powerbook G4 that has no operating system installed yet, so when i try to install Tiger, i have to put the DVD in while booting up. I went to the installing screen, and i agreed to everything and all, but when i got to the part where it asks where to install, my hard drive does not show up. I went to DISK UTILITY and chose to erase the entire hard drive (I dont have anything on it yet) and I also chose to repair it. It didnt have any needed repairs, so I went back to the install screen, and it still didnt show the hard drive as an option. It is a 55.9 GB hard drive, and when i erase it, the size does not change, so I know there is nothing on it yet. In Disk Utility, the details for the Hard drive says it is named CSD CAT060L, it is a Disk, the media type is Generic, and it is Internal. I have tried this many times, but the exact same thing happens. My DVD for Tiger was unopened, and new out of the box. If you need any information about what happens or anything, just ask.
    Thanks a bunch, Eshan.

    Try this:
    1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
