Mac mini - temporarily no cords or monitor

how can i use my mac mini that im temporarily w/o any cords or monitor? if i buy the right cords, could i use my friends "viewsonic" monitorthat he uses for his pc? or go to a placelike kinkos and use their cords and monitor? i need data off this computer sooner than ill get my cords and monitor- but cant spend too much money buys stuff i already own, if its too costly..........e.g., if a power cord alone is $40, then ill have just go w/o for now.
thank u for any ideas!

Of course it's impossible to know with 100% certainty, but the problem is almost certainly with the hard drive. Whether its fairly simple data corruption or a mechanical issue, I couldn't tell you based on what you've reported so far.
You could buy a Snow Leopard retail install on DVD. Apple is selling it again, for $20 I believe:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Just repartition and reformat the drive and install from scratch. With no installation media or backups you'll then have to use the Mac App Store to upgrade to Mountain Lion; I don't think it's possible to get Lion anymore. I've found Mountain Lion to run better than Lion, even on machines only at the bottom end of the system requirements, so it would be a good upgrade for you, anyway.
You could have a friend with Lion (or Mountain Lion) create a USB thumb drive with the Lion (or Mountain Lion) installer for you. Your friend could create a DVD, too, but a USB flash drive is better. It's easy to do, and as long as you purchased Lion (or purchase Mountain Lion later) I don't think anything legal would stand in your way.

If you have data on that drive you can't afford to lose, well, I'm sure I don't have to tell you that you should have been making frequent backups. You could try connecting your computer, in FireWire Target Disk Mode, to another Mac and attempt to copy your critical data that way. But if the drive or its data is corrupt enough to not boot then your data is probably kaput.

If you have DiskWarrior, it can't hurt to try it. But if there isn't any irreplaceable data, skip it and just reformat/reinstall.

  • Mac Mini does not detect DVI monitor on boot but does so on awake

    Hi,
my Mac Mini fails to detect a monitor on the DVI port when it boots (monitor says no signal).
If I leave it a few minutes to boot, then put it to sleep and awake using the power button, then the display appears.
This problem does not occur with the DVI-to-VGA adapter, and I have tried with 2 separate DVI monitors (different brands) and cables (both monitors are fine with Windows PCs).
I have tried various resolutions and color depths, to no avail.
Any ideas about how to resolve this?

What brand and model of monitor do you have?

  • Mac mini not displaying on HDMI monitor

Well, I have a Mid-2011 mac mini, and I have this monitor problem. While my thunderbolt moniter always works, (with a VGA adapter) my HDMI port hardly ever works. I have dual monitors, one HDMI and one VGA. They are both the same exact monitor (Dell Monitors) which both have VGA and HDMI ports. One is using the HDMI and one is using VGA. The HDMI one is all ste up, and has worked in the past, but it is currently not working at all right now. The VGA one always works, but the HDMI one switches on and off and either works at some point, then after a computer resart, it refuses to work. I belive its my computer that is refusing ti regognize it or something. Any hints help!

I do not have a solution for you.....but as to the suggested resets.....so you will know the intent....

  • Mac Mini with an LG Flatron Monitor

I recently bought a Mac Mini and hooked it up to an LG Flatron W2240T using a VGA cord.  Everything works fine and the monitor display is great...BUT, when my computer goes to sleep and then I wake it back up, everything is "zoomed in" and pixelated.  I tried messing with Displays in System Preferences, but cannot get it to work.  The "Scaled 1920x1080" setting looks fine, but everything is pushed to the right and a quarter of the screen is cutoff.  So I always end up setting it back to  "Best for display" and just restarting the computer, which fixes the problem...but slows me down.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!

I have the same problem, my Mac Mini is connected to a pretty old LG Flatron monitor (L177WSB) through a mini display port to VGA adapter, when the mini goes to sleep the resolution gets messed up and I have to restart it.
I haven't found any solutions to this problem yet. For now I just disallow the mini from going to sleep.

  • How can I connect a new mac mini to my old vga monitor? There doesn't seem to be a mini display port

I have an old monitor with VGA port, and was wondering if anyone knows how to connect this to the new mac mini. Older mac minis have the mini display port, and if that were the case I would use the mini display port to VGA adapter, but this new mac mini doesn't have one. It just has the thunderbolt port or HDMI port for displays... I've been looking for an adapter to connect my display to one of these but cannot seem to figure it out. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

The Thunderbolt port is the one to use; you use the same mini-DisplayPort adapter you used for the older minis.
    Regards.

  • 2014 Mac Mini connected to Samsung s22b310b monitor colors bad upon waking from sleep.

Occasionally when I wake the 2014 Mac mini from sleep the colors on the monitor are very bright.  I go into systems preferences and then display.  I click on the color button and it will change back to normal.  I have tried both a DVI to mini displayport and VGA to mini displayport.  Problem occurs with both.  What else can I try to prevent this from happening?

  • My Mac mini no longer detects my monitor resolution

My Mac Mini has stopped being able to detect the resolution of my monitor, which is a 1680x1050 Acer widescreen.  1680x1050 is also no longer a choice of resolutions under 'Displays' in 'System Preferences' so I cannot select my monitor resolution manually.  I suspect that there is a bug somewhere in a recent update which has broken support for my monitor.  Is there an official channel by which I can report this bug?  Has it been reported already?  Is there an ETA on a fix?  This renders my Mac more or less unusable.

It's unlikely that the upgrades had anything to do with the problem, slim superdrives are just not all that reliable.
You might try a few tricks before taking it in for service or springing for a Mac compatable external DVD drive.

  • Mac Mini With Existing 27" PC Monitor?

    Hello All!!
I currently have a PC that is using a 27" Acer monitor. (It's not the best monitor in the world but it suits me just fine. ) Here are the specs:
    27" Widescreen LCD display
    1920 x 1080 HD resolution
    12,000,000:1 contrast ratio
    white LED backlight
    1080p support with HDCP
    2ms response time
    2 x HDMI®
    VGA
    http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/ET.HS3HP.001
The monitor has two HDMI inputs but I am only using one. I want to buy the $799 (actually it's on sale for $739) Mac Mini from Best Buy and connect it to the second HDMI input on my monitor.
Here is the Mac Mini I want to get:
    Apple® - Mac mini / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple%26%23174%3B---Mac-mini-/-Intel%26%23174%3B-Cor e%26%23153%3B-i5-Processor-/-4GB-Memory-/-500GB-Hard-Drive/2658129.p?skuId=26581 29&productCategoryId=pcmcat268200050003&id=1218343208945
I noticed that the Mini has an HDMI output. Can I plug my monitor straight into the Mac Mini's HDMI output and use it? Will it look crappy with such a low quality display (I am not that picky so "crappy" to you is probably good to me. ). If so, what monitor do you recommend (I can't afford the Apple monitor)?
    Thanks!
    M

A Mac Minis is a great value if you can pair it with the right monitor.  I have been a huge fan of the Dell UltraSharp Monitors.  They are very crisp and clear - pictures look absolutely stunning. This was a big upgrade over my 19", and it's really amazing. You really don't know what you're missing on these big monitors until you get one!

  • 2014 Mac Mini won't detect Dell monitor on startup

On a cold start or waking from sleep it is necessary to reset the PRAM in order for the Mini to recognize a Dell P2014H.  Restarts are not a problem.
This was not an issue with an older MacBook Pro or an Air at the Genius Bar.  I have resolved this by setting preferences to never turn the display off but don't consider this a permanent fix.
I'm running 10.10.1 and connected via VGA to a Thunderbolt port.  The monitor is only 7 months old so I'm not inclined to replace it yet or add even more cables to my collection just to find that doesn't fix anything.  In fact when another 2014 Mini was connected to my monitor at the Apple store it had the same problem.
On the other hand our 2012 Mini has never had issues with a Dell U2412M.   So what's up Apple?

I just bought a Mac Mini with latest operating system 10.10.1 and had the same problem. I also used a monitor with HDMI cable. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Apple Care tech but no solutions. I took it back to shop and they tested it but did not have a HDMI cable and used a thunderbolt adapter. It worked fine. Bought a Thunderbolt adapter for HDMI cable and problem solved. Both mouse and keyboard now wake up system. Perhaps a future update will solve this but for now I'm happy.

  • Mac mini compatibility with 1600x900 Samsung monitor?

I have just purchased a Mac mini Z0FW-2GB (2GHZ 2GB DDR3 RAM/120GB drive) and would like to pair it up with a Samsung 2033SW 20-inch with a resolution of 1600x900
Does anyone know if this monitor / resolution will work natively with Mac mini? Does the necessary connector ship with the Mac mini?
    Thanks.

A Mac can automatically configure itself for any resolution on-the-fly based on whatever EDID (display driver data) it receives from the monitor it is connected to. That is, for example, why all Macs, even older ones, are successfully running monitors like the new 2048 x 1152 ones that have recently come into the market. Even though older Macs may pre-date the existence of that new and never previously existing format by several years, they are still able to read the EDID and self-configure their graphics output into any resolution. For this reason, I doubt you will have any trouble with a 1600 x 900 monitor.
And, yes, everything you will need comes with the Mac mini (Mini DVI to DVI Adapter) or the monitor (DVI cable), so you won't need to buy anything extra.

  • New Mac mini won't connect with monitors stating 'unsupported Mode'

Hi I'm new to Mac and just purchased a Mac Mini.
The guy in store gave me an adapter so I can use my current screen.
However when I first tried it the screen was very large however I put this down to needing to change the settings on the screen. Although when I tried it didn't work.
Now it is sating it's 'unsupported' and is also very large and appears in an equivalent 'safe mode' as you would get on windows - if that's makes sense?
Please can someone help as I don't really have time to get to store, and need this for our business
    Chris

    Hi
    The monitors are;
    Optronix OP-158BS
Digix screen which does both tv and PC.
I believe it's a VGA connection and the apple store gave us an adapter for this.
    Many thanks

  • An adapter for connecting a 2.5 GHz dual-core Mac Mini to a VGA CRT monitor?

This question concerns the 2.5 GHz dual-core Mac Mini from Mid 2011 (Intel Core i5-2520M) (Macmini5,2).  Is there an adapter for connecting it to a VGA CRT monitor?

    store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A
Thunderbolt port is physically identical the miniDisplay port and can pass video for a monitor.

  • Mac Mini w/ASUS 21" widescreen monitor

Screen flashes intermittently, then scrambles like an old TV. I can reboot monitor to reset. Seems like monitor issue, though its less than a year old.... any ideas anyone?

You can Screen Share into your Mac mini from your MacBook Air. It's not the same as it would be with an actual keyboard, mouse and monitor, but it will allow you do still control the system. You will also need a keyboard, mouse and monitor to initially go into your Mac mini and enable Screen Sharing.
If you have a Mac mini Server, there is another way to accomplish this as well, just let me know.

  • Why Mac Mini if started up with monitors switched off looses Mouse settings?

    Hi,
I have a late 2012 Mac Mini connected to 2x LG HD monitors (one with thunderbolt adapted to HDMI and one on HDMI).
Every morning I switch on the computer but sometimes I forget to switch on the monitors.
If the machine boots without monitors I get my mouse settings reset in a very strange way
    - Mouse speed is slower (I work at maximum speed)
    - Scroll is inverted but to NATURAL although the tickbox is not checked so I have to check and uncheck again
I know.. this may seem a stupid issue.. but is annoying no?

I suspect those Mouse settings may now be stored in the hidden...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.<12digitHex#>. plist
File, but the location may even be changed in 10.9.x, I suspect if no monitor is detected, osx can't find a Monitor profile to match the zero monitors, & it must then use some default plost.

  • Late 2012 Mac Mini to LG 29EB73-P Monitor

    Hi
I have just purchased a late 2012 Mac Mini that I am trying to connect to a LG monitor. Also, I'm trying to obtain the 2560x1080 resolution. The monitor has the following in-puts: Display Port/DVI-D/HDMLx2. The Mac Mini has HDML/Mini Display Port.
So mu question is: What connection do I need to get the resolution of 2560x1080??
    Regards

Best is to use a displayport to mini displayport cable. Cost about $10
You could also use a dual-link mini displyaport to DVI adopter. Cost about $99
