Mac OS 10.6.8 Parental Controls interfere with Firefox by preventing access to websites and plug ins

Mac OS 10.6.8 iMac, running FireFox 15 in grade school computer lab. When Parental controls are enabled in system preferences Firefox does not work properly. Can't use Google to search from the search bar at the top, can't access plug ins, there are even a few websites that can't be used. An example is digitalpassport.org from Common Sense media. Students can't access to log into their accounts. Parental Controls have been running on these macs for over a year with no issues. I thought it was the latest Firefox version giving us a problem but I updated to Firefox 16 today and the problem persists. If I turn off parental controls, Firefox works perfectly. I was not previously limiting applications, just blocking youtube and facebook. I tried limiting applications and then allowing all of them but that didn't help. What am I missing? Also, I can't access Mozilla support pages either when Parental Controls are enabled.

Check the PLUGIN UPDATES! Shockwave and Java were outdated and needed re-installation on mine! Took a couple of efforts with restarts but it is obvious that it solved my problems! Firefox Mozilla Toolbar 'Help' > 'Firefox Help' > lower right side of page displays link to Plugin Update review....

  • Parental controls interferes with iTunes Store access

My daughter's account is set up to use Parental Controls. Under Tiger, she had no problems getting to the iTunes Store. Under Leopard, we get an "unknown error" (with a "-4" in it somewhere), every time.
If I turn off the parental controls for her account, she can get to the iTunes Store. If I turn them back on, she can't.
(On a related note, toggling Parental Controls seems to lose all of your settings... That is, the workaround to my iTunes Store problem might be to disable Parental Controls when she wants to access the store). That's a pain, though, because all of the "allow" / "don't allow" settings that I've established are lost, every time.)
She's got access to iTunes (and iTunes Helper, whatever that is), so it's not like I've prevented her from using iTunes. Again, worked fine under Tiger.
Is there a permanent fix to this?

    Same problem.
Here is a workaround that works for me: I go to the iTunes Music Store and enter a search term in the search box, "The Monkees," for example. The search takes me to the Search Results screen. From there, if I click on an Artist or Album link, to "escape" out of the Search Results screen, the navigation path at the top has the home icon, music, genre, etc. buttons available. If I click on the home button, I get the long wait followed by an error. But I can click on the next level below, Music, and get pretty much everywhere in the music store.
And I've also temporarily turned off parental controls to debug this and lost all the allow / deny settings... very annoying.
The most difficult thing about trying to solve the parental control problems is that it is not always clear what is causing the problem. For example, amazon.com works fine when allowed, but once you go into secure mode most parts of the site fail to load properly, no matter what you add to the allow list in parental controls. Something about parental controls "fails to establish a secure connection." Turning off parental controls fixes the problems, but then you have no parental controls.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) on your account then the steps on this page will give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6170
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

hello my Mac Air is frozen on the grey screen (with the apple symbol, sleeping mode, restart-and off button), once you turn it on. I Can`t press any button. My Mouse still works. Battery is charged. Alt-cmd-escape doesn`t work It even after a forced shutting off, the problem is the same.   what should i do? Thank you for your help.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. The battery is distinct from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Mac OS 10.6.7 Parental Control Time Limit Bug

My son is able to get around time limits on parental control.  If he is out of time and requests me to authorize additional time, he has found a way to get it extended (reset).  If I give him permission to use the computer for 15 minutes and he logs out with 1 second to go.  The Mac resets its clock for another 15 minutes.  If he logs out sooner, the clock is correct and only allows him to have the remaining time.
I have seen posting of similar problems for older versions of Mac OS.  Does anyone know of a patch for this problem?
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

I have a similar issue.  The time limits seem to work fine on my computer for both of my sons. However, my 14 yr old just bought a new MacBook and I am the Administrator and set time limits on his new MacBook and they worked for about a week. Either he has figured out a way to circumvent them (he swears he hasn't) or there is some bug.
This has been a issue for a very long time according to some other threads I have seen. I wish Apple would do something about it or at least respond. The Parental Controls were a big reason we made my son buy a Mac and not a PC.

  • Parental Controls fixed with 10.5.1?

I got my first mac the same weekend Leopard was released. My wife and I were very happy to see the parental controls feature, at first. When we enabled it for our children's account everything appeared to be working, then we logged into our accounts. Dashboard was messed up, programs (specifically World of Warcraft) were being corrupted by blocking them on different accounts, etc etc.
Before I go back and re-enable parental controls I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not some of these issues were fixed in 10.5.1 (I know they were common problems from searching the forums). I really dont feel like re-enabling and then having to reinstall again to set things right.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I had a small touch of P.C. wierdness prior to the latest update, and since applied - all seems fine.
I did review the update details, but not the security side. Although it was not listed as an item of address, it may very well have been touched by something else not seen.

  • Parental controls bug with 10.6.4 and Safari 5?

When Safari is locked in Parental Controls it only opens approved sites. If a user tries to go to a non-approved site a dialog appears allowing an admin to add the site. If the admin authorizes ongoing use, the site should be added to the Safari bookmarks bar.
That's not working any more. The site is not added. THe Admin has to drag the url to the bookmarks bar and reauthenticate. If the admin does not do this the authorization will not stick.
    Anyone else see this?

Hi Carolyn. Is there any special reason repairing permissions would work for this? I stopped doing that years ago since I never had it fix anything. (OS X Permissions have deep and seemingly intractable problems, but the repair function doesn't seem to help.)
Thanks for the OpenDNS tip. I have used them in the past. Their new family filter is a good feature, but it's just a packaged version of their standard filtering (and it will have the same problem with local address drift as their standard feature - OpenDNS fails when your public IP address changes, you need to run a DNS updater). I need finer grained control than OpenDNS offers.
Apple seems to break Parental Controls with abandon. Sometimes I think the engineers hate PC.

  • Parental Control accounts with Simple Finder won't log out

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, my children cannot logout. The accounts use Simple Finder and have Parental Controls set. To log out, we must Force Quit Finder. How do I fix this? Also, empty Trash does not empty the trash.

enable full finder. go to home/library/preferences and delete the files com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.finder.plist. then control-option click on finder in the dock and choose 'relaunch'. then start Activity Monitor ((it's in /Applications/Utilities) and force-quit Dock. switch back to simple finder and see if it works better now.

  • Parental Control options with routers

Hi - I'm curious about which routers I can use with parental controls. From what I understand Linksys uses a web-based company (Cerberus?). Do I need a particular type of router or will any work? I need an 8-port and wireless would be good but not necessary. Thanks for any info.

I believe Linksys has Parental Control on a simplified version. Unlike before, as I noticed it, the old router models would have the Internet Access Policy option. If you’d like to know more about Parental Controls, click on the following links:Getting to know Parental controlshttp://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=85fd15dec47b4d06bc459e0854881781_21458.xml&pid=80&respid=0&snid=1&dispid=0&cpage=searchSetting up parental controls to block specific websites http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=3f929507766a432aa28c3aeca9e19833_Setting_up_parental_controls_to_block_specific_websites_.xml&pid=80&respid=0&snid=1&dispid=0&cpage=searchConfiguring the Parental Controls feature through Linksys Smart Wi-Fi App http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=31a6ce5823a44320a6d09260eb6214e7_Configuring_Parental_Controls_on_Cisco_Connect_Cloud_through.xml&pid=80&respid=0&snid=1&dispid=0&cpage=search

  • Volume buttons interfere with firefox plugins

    Hey there ThinkPad community!
Recently I have noticed that when using the Adobe Reader Plugin for firefox the volume won't change anymore upon pressing the volume buttons. The onscreen display pops up showing the current volume yet it won't increase or decrease. When pressing the mute button nothing happens at all. This behavior only occurs when the focus is set on the plugin (i.e. I have clicked somewhere on the PDF)
Also when I am watching a flash video like this one: German News (and again the focus is on the plugin) odd things like video pausing will happen whenever I press or hold one of the three volume buttons. At least then the volume does change.
Is this a problem of firefox or is it one of the ThinkPad drivers?
    I am using firefox 11.0
    Adobe Acrobat plugin version 10.1.1.33
    Shockwave Flash plugin version 11.1.102.62
    on a X201t with Windows 7 Professional 64bit SP1
I will tell You the versions of the "volume button control programs" if You tell me which ones those are.

Hello TheMan and welcome to community,
The issue is with the software compatibility with firefox.
Kindly install the updated hot key and power management driver and check if it resolve the issue.
    Best Regards,
