Mac OS 10.8.5 update trouble
Hi,
I'm new here and I would be grateful to anyone able to help me. Today I have made the Mac OS 10.8.5 update on my 2010 Macbookpro (Apple care ending on November 10). It has downloaded the update from the application center and has started to install it. All went fine. However it has been half an hour now that the screen is blocked at "less than a minute before restart". I have all the right to suspect something is wrong.
So what to do? Wait one or two hours? Restart? I'm not very hot on restarting as it is a Mac OS update.
Of course, I don't have time machine and haven't saved my system (reason why is: never any problem with updates). I'm mac since 1996 and do handle the machines pretty well but this is the first time something si liar happens and I'm not quite sure what to do.
Any advice to give me?

Mac mini (early 2006) firmware update 1.0.1 trouble

I just tried to install the update a couple of times with no success: the update tries to start with the progress bar flashing on the screen, but quickly stops and the mini restarts again all by itself.
I tried unplugging all peripherals and even repaired disk permissions, but no help.
What could it be, the 1.0 firmware update went well. Now after each failed attempt, the firmware updater comes up and suggests to try again...I have stacker external drive formatted as one mac partition with the latest updates, and connected as FW drive. With external drive selected as boot volume, I downloaded FW Update 1.0.1 and installed with no problem. I restarted on the internal drive setup for Japanese windows XP and the initial restart was slow (whew!) When I open startup disk utility in windows it doesn't show external mac volume, (I'm not sure if utility is compatible with external volumes, or maybe have to install Mac file system support). I'll just use option (alt) key to select mac volume.

Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5 - Problems
Using Software Update I downloaded "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5".
After the restart I got the following error message:-
*"The installer could not validate the contents of the 'JavaForMacOSX10.5Update5' package. Contact software manufacturer for assistance."*

HT5243 For the Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8, How Do We Know...
Hello-
I am wondering how one knows if they should install the new Update for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8? It says, "If you do not use Java applets, you should disable the Java web plug-in your web browser," which is Safari for me.
Is this an update I should install? Enable Java is checked and has been since I installed Safari.
any suggestions? I have been having so much trouble with my MBP the last 6 months, all I need is something else to conflict and cause more troubles. A trip to the Genius Bar is needed.

The Java Update 8 does NOT disable Java in Safari. One needs to do that manually. So are you saying I should leave it checked in Safari---Preferences---Security---Web Content?
I think in 35 days or so this update will disable all Java anyway. -
Palm Missing Localization Information Display after Mac OS 10.4.6 Update
Recently I installed the Mac OS 10.4.6 update after confirming that it should improve some minor issues with "Hot Synching".
Previously I could "Hot Synch" with my Palm Mac Desk Top software 4.2.1 and also with my PC with no issues. My Palm is using Palm OS 4.5, I believe.
Now I can still can "Hot Sync" on my Mac--with no issues. However, when I take the Palm out of the USB Cradle and try to access the Palm Display page with the featured icons, I get a very unusual error:
"Application can not be launched because it is missing localization info file xxx--enUS.prc."
I checked the Palm site and entered the error message and the response was returned that indicated "several applications with the Palm Tungsten T require overlay files to run properly. "Dialer, SMS, & WAP Browser" require and overlay "prc" file that determines which language the application displays on the device. If this "prc" file is missing, it will cause this message to be displayed."
I was instructed to install the "xxx_enUS.prc" using the Palm Install tool.
I installed all of the "xxx_enUS.prc" files on Disk 2 and have performed a "Hot Sync" again. A successful "Hot Synch" was performed.
The above message is still displayed on the Palm screen even after that successful "Hot Synch".
I can not use any of the screen icons to select any of the features or vprograms on the Palm.
The face buttons can be depressed but the selection from the Palm hand held icons with the stylus can not be accessed as the "missing localization info, ect" is displayed.
I have performed soft resets to no avail.
I still can not get this issues resolved.
Recently I instlled iSynch and the problems still occur.
Anyone out there have any suggestions.

I guess the question is - how does the system know a user with the same username and password are actually the same person?

What method did you use to update your system. As a rule, I use the combo update. If you used the incremental method, I suggest using the combo update. Remember to repair permissions via Disk Utility after the update. -
Hi - I am looking for the Adobe Illustrator 2014 1.2 (or .0.2) bugfix update for Mac - and it is not visible in the Adobe Creative Cloud Packager (Mac version). The only update visible is Illustrator CC 2014.1 - which is what introduced the bugs.
The only thing that I can think of that might be causing the issues that I have a Mac Mini on Mavericks.

le and supposed that it was a bug fix release for his version - because the v17 ov18 number is not often displayed. It is usually just 2014 CC.

You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Java broken in Firefox after Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3
After having updated my mac this morning with the latest Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, Java in Firefox is no longer working. When I open a site that contains a java applet (like javatester.org) I get the following output in the Console, and then Firefox hangs.

For some reason I had an additional "Java" Folder (/Library/Java) with a different Java sdk. After removing this folder and (just to be sure) replacing it with a symlink to /System/Library/Java everyting works again. -
Can't print wirelessly since Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4
I have an HP Officejet J4680 All-in-One, and have been printing wirelessly from my Macintosh (OS 10.5.7) since I purchased the printer in December 2008. However, after I installed the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4, I suddenly lost the ability to print wirelessly. I've spent hours on my own and on the phone with HP trying to figure this out, with no success. When I uninstall and reinstall the printer, I can get to the point in the HP Setup Assistant in which the network configuration has been successfully downloaded to the printer (I see an IP address, Subnet Mask, etc.), but then I get an error message of "Device Not Reachable . . . please make sure that your Mac has access to the network and retry." My Mac does have access to the network because I can get on the internet wirelessly.
I've tried entering the IP address manually, etc.--but nothing has worked. It's as if the printer is on the network, and the computer is on the same network, but they somehow can't talk to each other. Anyone else notice this problem, and how do I solve it?? I also cannot think how this update would have impacted your ability to connect to the printer, except maybe due to a reliance of the HP software using Java to operate. But this should not have stopped your existing connection from working, only a new connection...
Apologies in advance if you have already been through the following, but if you were successful in entering an IP address manually, I would then check that you can get a response from the printer. The best tool to use is Ping. Open Applications > Utilities > Network Utility. Here you will see the Ping tab, as well as several other IP tools.
Before you select Ping, select Info (it probably has defaulted to this). This pane shows you the current IP address settings for your Mac. Since you are using wireless, change the drop menu from en0 (which is Ethernet) to en1 (wireless). This will show your current IP address set in the Mac. Make a note of this.
Now select the Ping tab and enter the IP address of the HP. Change the number of pings to 4 and press the Ping button. If the addresses are correct and the network infrastructure working you should get a response. If you get something like " 4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss", then that would explain the unreachable message.
The biggest cause of this symptom is subnetting. To explain further, an IP address consists of two parts, the subnet and network address. The subnet is determined by the subnet mask. If you have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the your subnet is the first three sets of numbers in your IP address and the network address is the last number. For example, an IP address of 10.0.1.10 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 has a subnet of 10.0.1 and a network address of 10. For devices to communicate on a local network, they typically need to have the same subnet and a different network address. Can you confirm the subnets for the Mac and printer are the same and the network addresses are different.
If you get responses to the Pings, which indicates the IP addressing is okay, the other services like firewalls can stop some printer utilities from working correctly. Have you checked your System Preferences > Security > Firewall setting is set to allow all incoming connections?

The 'Sync Now' option on my desktop Firefox menu won't work, nothing happens!
