Mac OS X hanging randomly (namely freezing, needing a hard reset)

Hi,
I'll present my problem as straightforward as possible: ever since August 2nd (when I installed a number of updates, including Airport Extreme Update 2007-004 and Security Update 2007-007 Intel), my machine started to freeze needing a hard reboot quite often.
It's not that my Intel MacBook Pro (one of the first ones) hasn't ever frozen as opposed to the PowerBook that worked smoothly no matter what happened, but I started to get concerned about it, especially when everything started to happen after the one before the last update.
Usually the freezing happens when I'm plugging in USB headphones or playing a DVD or using my TV receiver with the laptop.
In /var/log/system.log I notice quite a lot of:
kernel[0]: AppleYukon: 00000000,00000000 skqueue - SkEventDispatcher - ignoring event queue, hardware is not responding
...which I find it's related to the ethernet card (which goes Inactive extremely often, needing a reboot to be activated again)
and:
AppleYukon: 00000000,0000ffff skxmac2 - ReadPhy - phy read error
...which I have no idea what it is.
I'm also considering a hardware failure, and am trying to convince myself to go to the Apple Store and try to explain the situation, but thought that I'd better ask here first in case anybody else had the same problem and found a solution or at least an explanation.

I've been having a similar problem with the same timeframe. Since applying the August 2nd update (including the Airport Extreme Update 2007-004), my MacBook Pro will not recover after entering sleep mode. I'm consistently forced to hard reboot it after it goes into standby mode. No amount of mouse clicking, trackpad tapping, button pushing, keyboard banging, etc. will convince it to resume from standby.
If anyone has any suggestions for where I could possibly look for some error log information, etc. (I'm a recent convert from Windoze to OS X), I'd be very appreciative.

PowerBtn from the Canuck Software HomePage.

PowerBtn will allow you to set a HardButton to turn the TX on and off in the same fashion as the PowerButton, if you want.
This setting will remain active while 'Enable' on the PowerBtn screen is active.
The user can select 'Disable' on the PowerBtn screen.
The setting will survive a Soft Reset. (Hi PG )
If the Palm PowerButton fails completely then you will not be able to do a Hard Reset.
The PowerBtn app has a 'Hard Reset button' which you tap and after a time countdown (you can cancel in this time) it will perform a Hard Reset. This is the same as the Hard Reset app mentioned above.
The 'Enable' and 'Disable' mentioned above do not affect the 'Hard Reset button'
NOTE: PowerBtn also has a 'Program itself becomes power button' feature but I do NOT recommend you use this.
If you enable this you will not be able to change the setting or use the 'Hard Reset button' because when you Tap on the PowerBtn Icon the TX will turn Off. The only way to change the setting or use the 'Hard Reset button' would be to Delete PowerBtn then install again.
You can also turn your TX On by pushing the 5WayNav Select (middle button) to bring up the clock then double push it. The TX will stay on at the same place it was in when you turned it off, in the same way it would if you used the Power Button

My Ipad3 is very slow after installing 8.02 and needs a hard reset every 2 minutes.

I had a wonderful running Ipad3 32gb running on IOS7, now after installing IOS8.02 this device is slow (e.g. Safari) and needs a restart (hard reset) every to minutes because it freezed up. I´m quite unhappy. I tried to stop processes and have a enough free space on the disk. Nothing helped.
I can´t imagine that you beta-tested IOS8 on the IPAD3?
Any solution by Apple?

Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
(B) Setup as new (data will be lost if you do not have backup)
Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings

My ipod is hooked up to my windows computer but will not connect to itunes and is showing disabled with find my I phone. It has been password protected by my child and I need to factory reset it. However I have out lived my warranty and am trying to fix without having to go through Apple.

IMac freezing permanently (requires hard reset)

My parent's iMac has been freezing on them recently, after a fresh install of Snow Leopard.   It locks up, the beachball of death appears, and only a hard reset will get the computer running again.
I checked the kernal.log file and this is what I see for the time period of the freeze:

I ran the Extended Hardware Test 3 times, but there were no errors.   Any other ideas?   I'm coming up with squat while researching.
Edit: Apparently some people are reporting kernel error with Flash crashes.   Has anyone experienced this?   I updated their computer to the current version of Flash to see if this clears the problem up.

ITunes hangs, freezes, wont force quit, & need to hard reset my computer!

I have resolved my issue. I used the app "AppZapper" to delete iTunes, and all of its preferences, from my machine (leaving my library on an external drive untouched). I then downloaded the latest version of iTunes from Apple.com and ran the installer. It opened up with no issues whatsoever, and hasn't crashed since.
I suspect it had something to do with corrupt preferences (perhaps in the Genius listings?), and doubt that removal of the application itself was necessary. You may be able to just toss the prefs, and try again. Note, even though I deleted iTunes prefs, it recognized all my iPods and iPhones as before, and I haven't need to reset anything.

IPhone 4 turning off randomly once in day. Need to hard reset every time.

My iPhone 4 is about 2.5 years old. Few days back it turned off suddenly while i was calling. It was not turning on from power button so I reset it by pressing home+power key. It starts and work normally. After few days it again turned off and i again reset it. Now this behaviour is continueing. I have tried reseting it but issue not resolve. Please help to fix this

Sounds like you need to take it back to the Apple store and tell them the replacement isn't working.

Consistently need a hard reset when re-plugging power.

Each time I unplug power to my TC neither of my macbooks will recognize the TC. The only procedure that seems to work is to do a hard reset of the TC while plugging the power back in. Must I do this every time I unplug the power to the TC?

OK, thanks for the additional info. A few more suggestions:

Can you check your settings in Applications > Utilities > Airport Utility - Manual Setup on this? Click the Wireless tab to display your network settings for wireless.
Wireless Mode should be "Create a wireless network"
Wireless Network Name should be your name for your network
Radio Mode: Good choice would be 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
Channel: Automatic
Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal or WPA2 Personal
Password: Your password for the network
Under the Options button, make sure that the "create a closed network" box is not checked
Update to save any changes
To see the TC in the Finder under the SHARED heading when you open your Hard Drive, try the following:
Click in an open area on the desktop so the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
Click the Finder menu, then click Preferences
Under the "Show these items on desktop" heading, make sure there is a check mark in the box next to "Connected Servers"
It may take a few more tries, but we should be able to get you going.

G5 Quad hangs almost every night - requiring a hard reset in the morning

leaves absolutely nothing in the system logs.
It's very strange. I leave barely anything running at night - maybe email and occasionally VMWare.
When I get in the next morning, the screen saver is completely frozen. and I have to power off/on to get it to respond.
Any ideas?

Dozens of threads on "restart on wake from sleep" and you have an Intel (non-IBM/PPC G5). Similar case, totally different.
Reset the SMC. Turn if off and shutdown for the night. Unplug all cables and power. If on UPS, just shutdown and turn off UPS.
Some screen savers may be better than others.

Needs a hard reset(battey pull) to run 3rd party apps via gprs

Hi,
My BB9300 curve runs with OS5, and I'm using airtel India carrier. I don't have BIS plan, I'm using normal gprs plan to run third party apps like opera and whatsapp.
These apps works well with gprs, but the problem is, it suddenly stops working saying that no internet connection is available. Then to fix this I've 2 do a battery pull(hard reset) every time.
Kindly provide any fixes available for this.

EA4500 needs frequent hard reset

Hi all,
I have an EA-4500. Unfortunately I often have to hard-reset it:
- every time I update the firmware (last time I updated to 2.1.38.138827 via Cisco Connect Cloud)
- sometimes whenever there is a black-out
The first time it happened upon the automic firmware update which released Connect Cloud.
In such cases, the router stays with the white Cisco logo on and no other lights work (i.e. the ethernet lights on the rear side of the router are off). The only reset procedure working is: unplug Internet cable, press reset for 30 secs, turn off while keeping reset pressed, wait 30 more seconds, turn on again always keeping the reset pressed.
I've tried to turn off for 2 minutes but it doesn't work. The strange thing is that the above reset procedure does not always work, sometimes I have to do it like 10 times before the router Cisco logo light starts blinking on and off (like breathing).
Besides this, which is very very annoying, I'm satisfied with router functionalities and performance.
Do you have any idea on what I could do to solve the hard-reset issue?

thank you for your reply. Just to clarify, when you say "reboot the router" should I do it from the Connect Cloud page?
In general, whenever the issue I explained above shows up, I have no way to log on the router unless doing the hard reset procedure.
Should I perform the steps you suggest when the router is behaving normally? What result should I expect?
Step 5 makes me think this is something I should do only if the router is stuck since, when it works, I can ping it anytime.

Phone randomly dies requiring hard reset

Does anyone else have this same issue. My phone randomly dies and requires a hard reset. It has happened to me twice in 10 days. First time I thought that I had let my phones battery get to low but after putting it on the charger for an hour it would not power on using the button... had to hard reset. Second time I am 96.3 % positive it had over 75% battery and it randomly died also requiring a hard reset. I have an iphone5 32GB 6.1.3 version ios. My girlfriend is having the same issue with her Droid so I know it is not just an iphone issue. Verizon please respond.

I like to think being random is a great attribute. Sadly, not when it comes to a phone though. But fear not, because we've got a couple of solutions for one of our favorite couples.
Now, there's no doubt that random dying is an illness that does plague a small minority of devices. But, there's a possibility that it may be due to the equipment itself or potentially something that was installed. Based on your description of things, you're up to date in software. And hard resets are a fantastic route to take when experiencing these issues. But, we want to isolate the problem. What I'm going to recommend is doing another hard reset http://vz.to/Sq8I9x . Only this time, test it out before you load on your applications. Also, you may wish to remove those which may not be entirely reputable (battery savers, task killers, etc.). Please let me know how that goes and while we're on the topic, which device does your girlfriend have with us? I've got you covered.

IPod Nano 4th Gen is stuck in a cycle of freezing; hard resetting only results in another instantaneous freeze.

Hey, guys,
I've had this iPod for a while (And, admittedly, I bought it secondhand- a few years ago. It's worked perfectly fine up until now), and just within the last week, it's begun freezing a lot, but it was nothing a hard reset (Lock -> Unlock -> Home+Center button) couldn't fix.
Well, yesterday, the situation grew worse. Now, when it freezes and I hard reset it, the screen won't even make it past the Apple logo before becoming unresponsive again, 99% of the time. The only way I've found to counterract this is if I drain the battery completely, reset it, then plug it into my computer immediately afterward to restore the iPod. When there's nothing on it whatsoever, it won't freeze, but the moment I put pretty much any file on (That has been tested previously for freezing and works perfectly fine any time except for this), it freezes up again.
Has anyone encountered this, or is it literally just me? Does anyone know of any other fixes I could do, or will I absolutely have to take it in for repair? If so, how much do you guys think it would be?

i have tried all of that as well and im still stuck on the apple logo. i hit it against a table and everything. Does anyone know what to do?
