Mac os x has crashed unexpectedly

a question for all: sometimes after shutting down my macbook and i try to turn it on, the computer won't restart so i have to turn it on using "apple + p + r + power button" and when it finally turns on it says that mac os x has crashed unexpectedly. i was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem and what i should do. i have an applecare protection plan, but is there anything that i can do?

Hi ImA,
Welcome.
The quick fix to try for any power or startup problem is to reset the computer's power managment unit. It's easy and harmless (except you'll have to reset the system time if you don't have it auto-sync in System Peferences > Date & Time).
See the discussion and instructions here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Good luck; let us know.

  • Mac OS X Has quit unexpectedly

for the last couple weeks, i turn on my computer and it works for 3-5 minuets then a message comes up that says " Mac OS X has quit unexpectedly you need to restart your computer? " anyone know why it has been doing this?

Could be Hardware or Software... is it getting a lot hotter there in Montana the last couple of weeks?
What I'd do 1st if possible, is to get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
Another option might be to see how long it goes with a Safe Boot... hold Shift key down while booting, iirc.
Try usibg the Console in Utilities to find relevant Log entries as to the cause.

  • Mac book pro has crashed?????

as of now, when I turn on my macbook pro, the screen remains black (as if it is of) and the release button light, lights up repeatedly. I tried to start it from the 10.6 snow leopard disc to no avail any other suggestions? it is covered by my apple plan still so I will take it to the apple store soon just trying to see if there are any other things I can do to troubleshoot it.

The Apple Store may be your best bet since you are under warranty. If you have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video chip, you could have this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If so, it is a hardware problem which Apple will need to fix.
    Good luck!

  • Mac Mini has crashed - Disk Warrior and External Hard Drive Question.

I have Mac Mini that has crashed.  I purchased Disk Warrior and was able to boot from the CD.  Disk Warrior allowed me to see my files again but there is no way I can move them back onto my hard drive.  I cannot grab them.  Before I go into specifics....If I purchase an external hard drive and try to hook it up to my Mac Mini, will I be able move these files to this new external hard drive?  Is this a possibility?
Or will my new external hard drive need to go through a set up phase - which might be impossible since hard drive I'm trying to take the files from is technically dead?
Sorry - I'm a novice at these things.

Hello, no apologies needed for being a novice, great you asked!
YES, depends where you buy the Drive, it may need Formatting first to Mac OS Extended...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://Pondini.org/OSX/DU.html
These generally come Mac Ready, & get Firewire if you have a Firewire port, much faster...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Then in DiskWarrior, hold Option or alt key when selecting Internal to repair, that will do the best job of Scavenging the directory & provide a whole new Drive icon to copy or clone your info over to the external drive.

  • Mail has crashed and won't open at all

My MAC Mail App has crashed and refuses to open. I have tried force quitting, and rebooting but no avail. It crashed while I was trying to delete an overly large draft file (140 MB). It's crashed when my attachments got too large before. But now I can't open it, can't access any of my mail and it's wreaking havoc on my schedule since there are many key emails I can't get to!
I don't know how to reinstall and worry I will lose the existing mails. Any advice?
    HELP!
    Thanks,
    Haochong

Take a look in /Users/yourusername/Library/Mail. There should be several directories, among them directories and files for you local folders for all of your accounts. Find the correct files and drag them out to the Desktop (do not delete them, so you can move them back). This could help Mail.app to start again, however, the mails in the folders you moved to the Desktop will disappear (at least for POP3-accounts; IMAP-account will get resynced).

  • How do I have 2 itunes accounts on my mac book-1 for me(which is already on) and one for my partner who's PC has crashed and need to uae my mac book to sync his phone. Help please anyone?

I have a mac book which has my itunes account on it. My partner's PC has crashed and I want to get his itunes account on my mac book so that he can sync his phone. Can someone help me with how I do this please?
    Many thanks

    Thank you for the reply.
ctrl B makes the top bar (File. Edit. View. Controls. Store. Help.) appear and disappear.
ctrl S makes a side bar appear on the left side of iTunes. It shows the library which has Music. Movies. TV Shows. Apps. Playlists. Ect.
When I did the steps you suggested, my iPhone did not show up in that list.
I checked my firewall settings again, and they seem to be okay. My firewall is the only thing that I am not 100% sure of. If I go to Control Pannel>System and Security>Windows Firewall>Allow an app through Windows Firewall. It shows that iTunes is allowed. I'm not sure if something else might need to be allowed as well though. I have a few Remote options that are not allowed such as, Remote Event Log Management, Remote Scheduled Tasks Management, Remote Shutdown, Remote Volume Management, and Routing and Remote Access. I'm not sure if any of these need to be allowed or not, or if they are even affiliated with iTunes.

my iMac has crashed...was told I need a new hard drive.....meantime I bought a mac mini.....I had an external drive connected to the mac....and was using time machine for backups....so....how do i move itunes music files to my new mac mini from the external drive?

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

I have master suite cs6. on mac osx. bridge has been quitting unexpectedly. Also, getting message at start up that states that "bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation" I have purged the cache several times and adjusted settings with no change. I also downloaded the entire suite and installed. Do I need to uninstall all of the programs before installing the suite? There is not an option to install only Bridge from the install package.

    Maria,

  • Got a message that there is a problem with my Mac OS X Kernal. my PowerBook has crashed 4 times in the last week and happened when backing up to Seagate plus ext. hard drive.

my PowerBook G4 has crashed 4 times in the last week. I got a message that there is a problem with the Mac OS Kernal. Does anyone know what this means?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • My Mac is three years old and has crashed about 10 times. I have had to erase and re install Snow Leopard every time, yet it keeps happening.

I have communicated with apple care every time and they keep telling me there is no problem,so why does it keep crashing. I took it in for repair under warrenty and they told me there was nothing wrong with it yet it crashed again two weeks later and has crashed another 5 times since then,I have to erase and re install each time. It has now crashed again , i have re installed snow leopard and all i get is the spinning wheel and nothing loads..Im over it. I have several mac products including two other imacs that are running fine..

Run Apple Hardware Test on your computer, the next time your machine crashes try running disk utility on the hard drive.  You shouldn't need to reinstall the OS each time your system crashes, if that the case then you could have a bad hard drive.

  • "Mac OSX has quit unexpectedly"

I have had my imac desktop for about a year (i have 10.4 Tiger), using it daily with little to no trouble. Twice in the past two weeks, a grey screen comes from the top of my desktop to the bottom, freezing my computer with a message that informs me that i must restart my computer by either pressing the power button or pressing the "restart button". When i turn my computer off by pressing the on button, and turning it back on, a message pops up that says "Mac OSX has quit unexpectedly" and asks if i want to send a report to Apple.
    What does this mean?
    Why is this happening?
Do i need to take my mac in to get checked?

No, you need to check the compatibility of your applications to the OS you have installed. You also need to check your connected devices. Some piece of software or hardware you have is giving OSX kernel panics.

  • Firefox is suddenly crashing unexpectedly on my Mac, and I can't find a reason.

I have run Firefox (Version 3.6.12) on my Mac for several years, without a problem. About 2 weeks ago, , it started crashing unexpectedly. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the crashes, except that they seem to happen when I open a new page. It doesn't seem to matter what page I'm going too, CNN, Yahoo, Facebook.
I get a long failure notice. I though about posting it and can send a copy to anyone

Hi Carolyn:   Thanks for the suggestion regarding the screen swipe.  I did this before logging this question.
HI King:  You were spot on.
To the Apple community:  Thank you for the quick responses.  I empathize with Apple's challenge -- the technical support logistics are exponentially more difficult in supporting consumer products -- especially non-commoditized products -- than in supporting an enterprise products.  So thank you to the Apple community for reaching out to help the company as an adjunct.  It certainly is unique.
This does not alleviate Apple's responsibility to release note this issue, to insert a message on the screen telling the user to reboot or to create a fix in a future software release that allows the icon to show up without rebooting.    Thanks

  • I have never used Safari on my Mac yet it has frequently just stepped in, uses it's theme and no other, hx, bkmks, contacts, all gone! Is this due to Ff crashing?

I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard in my last desperate attempt to find all my Ff stuff. (OS x v 10.6.4) I subscribed to an expert opinion site to get their help (just sort of tightened it back up, reinst. Ff 3.6.8. I've been online for hours, tried to purchase a game from Gamehouse, backtracked to get an email address, tried to return to order,; Gh never heard of the game that was in my cart, and boom, hey, what's this theme? Safari! It's Ff, sort of, but shows no ext's or addons and won't even show themes. The last year or so Ff has crashed often and even more often will not quit and must be "forced quit." Often I can't tell what's hung up til it's too late. Fixed 3 days ago, messed up again. Granted, I was all over the place uninstalling old apps etc and trying to corner Safari or delete it, but I don't pile up a million windows. I've been emptying trash "secure" style and it takes hours; that had just finished. But when I tried to find a contact to add to the game and resume the order, OH! and at the end of the 60" free trial...the screen was shattered like a windows blue screen moment.

Well, if your Firefox is crashing, it's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem does not disappear when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.
If you "don't know where Firefox is" or "don't know how to start Firefox", see [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Installing+Firefox this article] about installing Firefox. Your profile should be safely stored. Reinstalling and even uninstalling won't delete your data (unless you tell the uninstaller to do so), so don't be afraid of installing Firefox again, preferably in the default location.
