MAC  OS X Server login issue ...

I have a mac mini core duo being used as a standalone server running OS X 10.5.2 server. Up till a few days ago I was able to login and use the system via the Apple Remote Desktop application.
Now for some strange reason, each time I login in all I see is the OS X server desktop wallpaper. I do not see the dock, nor desktop icons, nothing ... but I am still able to use the Server admin utility to change settings.
I have tried connecting an external monitor, no luck!
Tried restarting the mini, it gets to the login window, but once it logs me in .. nothing else shows up.
Anyone has any idea what the problem is and how I can solve it. thanks

I'm experiencing a similar issue. The only difference is that I can't even log on the machine at the login window when the machine is just started up.
Everything is working fine as before (other than iCal) and I am still able to maintain the machine remotely using Server Admin or Server Preferences. Did using Disk Utility work for you? It didn't work for me.

  • Help with Moodle on Mac OS X server - PhP issue

I am a server newbie.  I am setting up a server on a mac for the primary purpose of running a website for my students to use.  I have a hosted site now, but the version of php they offer is not high enough to run moodle.  I want to install moodle 2.4 on my mac server (mountain lion) but it needs :PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.33 or Postgres 8.3.  I read that I should not try to update the native php (5.3.13)  any thoughts or workarounds?  I could install an earlier version of moodle, but it is no longer being supported with updates.

First off, ensure that local DNS services are working.  If DNS is not working, then various services offered by OS X Server can be flaky.  Launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
It's common for folks to skip DNS setup or to reference ISP DNS services, which usually gets them in trouble, and have a much larger project fixing DNS-level errors.
OS X 10.8.4 should have php 5.3.15 and PostgreSQL 9.2.1, the versions of both appear to exceed the Moodle minimum requirements of 5.3.3 and 8.3, respectively.  To verify the php version, use the usual "<?php phpinfo() ?>" script.  For PostgreSQL, the brute-force command-line version check is "psql --version" command.
Put another way, I'm not sure why you're considering upgrading components — which can be problematic — if you're already running OS X Server 10.8.4 as implied by the footers of your posting.
Have a backup before starting the installation, as mistakes happen and having a backup of the whole disk means a faster recovery and an easier ability to start anew.

  • Mixed PC/Mac environment with Mac 10.6 server sharing issue

In this mixed environment, I can't figure out how to get new documents created on the Macs (saved onto a shared folder on the server) to be set as read/write for the PC user. I'm not a Mac system admin, just to start with, but I do use Macs all the time and feel like I know what I'm doing. This is just escaping me.
So new documents and folders, when created by a Mac, are created with permissions that give user group "staff" and "everyone" read only access, and give the "nobody" account ready and write access. If I manually go in I can change it so that staff has read/write, and propagate that to contained items, and then everything is editable. But new documents in that folder (any everywhere) are still not. Can anyone help me figure out what setting must be changed so that new documents and folders created by Mac clients are created with staff having read/write permissions?
I'll be back at the client site tomorrow so I'm really hoping (and expectED) to have an answer by then.
    Thanks!

Basically you want to have your members (or groups) added to the ACL under the filesystem being exported over AFP / SMB.

  • OS 10.4 Server Login Issues

Yesterday, we experienced a small power glitch and despite the presence of a UPS, the server went off and then restarted, resuming access to DayLite (collective db for contacts, etc.)
When I tried to log into the server (locally) and mount a volume, my PB hung up, crashing the finder. I experienced the same issue on another machine, same result. I can use my username and PW to log in, even seeing the volumes, but the hang occurs when I try to actually access the files.
It gets more interesting in that I can access the files on the server directly AND via VPN, just not on our intranet. Your thoughts?

Not much to go on, but I'd try logging in via SMB or NFS if you're using HFS, or vice versa, for a test if possible.
Then I'd try clearing all Caches.

    Hi
Do you have External security like OID / LDAP / AD configured with UCM ?
If yes , then check the provider status and see if the channel working fine with those applications .

Hi all. I have finally got networked users working on my Lion Server environment however have hit a stumbling block with getting a shared iCal environment up and running. I have setup the iCal service to be on in Server.app however receive an error when trying to set up an account. Here are the steps I take.
    1. Login as a user (have tried local administrators, network administrators and network users on both the server and clients).
    2. System Preferences.
    3. Mail, Contacts & Calendars.
    4. Add Account - Other.
    5. Add a Mac OS X server account, Create.
    6. Select the Lion Server, Continue.
    7. Have tried combinations of Full Name, Username and Password for different users.
    8. When I click Setup it comes back with a message saying "Unable to verify user credentials".
There is the following entry in the console, but no other information available:

  • Upgraded Mavericks 10.9.4 reverted to old OS X Lion Server login screen on cold boot

    Mac Pro
    Early 2008
    Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
    Processor  2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
    Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
    SMC Version (system): 1.25f4
This is the first time I've encountered this. Upon cold booting the machine it went directly to the legacy Mac OS X Server login screen from before the upgrade to Mavericks. It would not let me login with current credentials. I had no choice but to hard power off. It returned to normal operation on restart.
It could be a possible bug.

This happened for the second time today. Another thing I noticed was there was no Apple chime on boot. Upon restart the machine started with the Apple chime and went into the Mavericks login screen.

  • Icloud: can't login, serious server side issues

I'm having serious issues whith iCloud, can't sign in. I have two appleID's: 1 @mac.com and 1 @me.com (although the account name on appleid.apple.com is withouth the email-suffix "@me.com")
I would like to login in on iCloud.com with my @me.com AppleID and on iTunes with @mac.com. Off course merging the two AppleID's would be better.
    Issue:
Can't login on mac os x 10.7.3 (Safari icloud.com, system preferences) with neither AppleID's
Safari icloud.com: Connection error, icloud error while connecting to server
Sys prefs: you can't login this moment
Depending where I login, It works with @me.com or without the mail-suffix
    Can login on iphone/ipad/ appleid.apple.com
    Tried:
    - little snitch not present
    - deleted ~/Library/AppSupport/iCloud/Accounts
    - emptying Safari cache
    - resetting passwords on appleid.apple.com
    Other observation:
    - could login with safari on other account (guest), no longer possible
    - after deleting account on iphone, recreating account logged in with me.com appleID, login works but shows @mac.com account name
    - on iOS password from mac.com appleID works with me.com
    - can login on appleid.apple.com with both appleid's (with correct passwords)
    - me.com accountname is NOT in the form of an email addres, when trying to change accountname in a me.com address, this gets refused

    Just upgraded to 10.7.4.
    Solved some issues.
I can login via System Preferences and with iTunes with two different accoutns. Although. I have to use the password of the @mac.com AppleID to login with the @me.com AppleID (wiht mail-suffix). Like on my iPhone before.
If I login on the Apple support site I have to use the @me.com (without the mail-suffix) and the correct password.
    Understand who can.
Left to check: Fotostream, but first I have some real work to do. Thorough troubleshooting next week.
I'm no programmer but I've administered servers (solaris, mac, win) for 8 years in a multi-tier environment and I'm rolling out an identity mgt system in a 40k employee organisation at the moment.

  • Can't login to Mac OS X server website after password reset

    Hi,
I set up Mac OS X server for our small company and tried resetting the password of my network account that is managed via profile manager.
So, under Accounts->User->MYUSERNAME->reset Password, I typed in a new one and hit ok.
Now I can't login to the server website anymore (for editing our wiki or using profile manager etc.), neither with the new one nor with the old one.
I already tried different passwords (resetting it again and again), I looked at the password directive, I checked my user name, tried to login from different computers and tried logging in with another account (which worked quite fine, so it's just my account). Finally I searched the internet for a solution for quite some time but didn't find anything similar.
It would be great, if somebody could offer some advice.
    Best regards.
    Lasse

Solved it by deleting the user and creating a new one with the same userID.
Maybe it occured because I marked the "user has to change password after first login" box when resetting the password but didn't yet allow him to do so in the webpages menu?!?

  • Mac OS X Server : cannot login

    I have a Mac OS X server 10.9.5.
Since a recent update of the Server App, I have the following problems :
    - cannot login via imap and smtp to my server
    - cannot "connect as" my self in Finder any more to see my home directory on the server from an Imac Server running also OS X 10.9.5
my server is accessed for the email as mail.agilebuild.com and when I connect from the IMac it is known as "agilebuild.local".
I think that I might have called the server ilantoutseul.agilebuild.com back when I set up Open Directory.
I see the following messages in /var/log/system.log
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi Antoine,
According to this log at least the time between the server and client is off.

Verify that both the client and the server have the same time, otherwise kerberos will not work.
Then open the terminal.app on your server and show us the output of:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
It will not change anything just give a reply about the hostname of your server.
That will give us more info on how to fix your problem.

  • Mobile account login about 10 mins on mac os x server

    Hi there!
I successfully created mobile user accounts. When I log-in from my power book the mobile user is created and synched. If I try to log-in on my G5 workstation where mac os x server is installed the log-in procedure takes about 10 mins. Logging in with local accounts is as fast as one would expect.
A look into system.log shows that there are problems to mount the users mount point. Please see:

Did I miss something? Why can't I log-in my mobile user on the server machine?
    Thanx in advance

Looks like Apple has decided that access to the root user is not a needed thing for most users.  I called Apple and asked about this issue as I had just had it occur - and I was logged into terminal BEFORE update to 10.6.8 as root - after I was unable to do so -
Apple walked me thought this -
    System prefs ---->Accounts -----> unlock ------>
Click on Network Account Server "Join"  ----->
Choose "Open Directory Utility"  ------->  This opens directory utility window ----->  Unlock lock at bottom.
Go to "Edit" Menu and choose "Enable Root user" ------>  it will ask for password.  ( only 1st time after 10.6.8 update)
Now you can log into the root user in your terminal.
You can disable the root user - this will prevent you from logging in as root in terminal.
I am not sure - but is there a security RISK here?  The option to re-set the root password via the above method ( as an admin user) - but with out re-booting the machine and using the install DVD?
    My 2 cents.

  • Project Server Cumulative Update August 2013 install failed due to login issue/interruption

    Hi all,
I was in the process of running the installer (exe) for the August 2013 Cumulative update "uber" hotfix for SharePoint 2013 and Project Server today (KB2817615) on three servers. I was connected to the servers via Remote Desktop, logged in as the
    Farm account.
On one of the servers, somewhere during the installation, my Remote Desktop session got "hijacked" by another user who was not aware of the ongoing process..so he was logged in as the Farm account for a few minutes.
I logged back in and found that the install dialog was gone...apparently the install stopped due to the interruption in logins. So I attempted to re-run the hotfix installer, but it now says "There are no products affected by this package installed
    on this system."
I've tried clearing the timer cache and running the installer using "PACKAGE.BYPASS.DETECTION.CHECK=1" but neither has worked.
Any ideas on how this can be fixed or re-run?
    Thank you for your assistance!
    Regards,
    Kevin Worthington

    Hi Kevin,
Were you able to resolve this issue. I didn't have any interruptions or login issue, the installation cancelled itself!
Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Issues with Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 and Windows File sharing

We are having lots of issues with our SMB share on Mac OS X Server 10.4.8. The main issues are the following:
    - Group ACLs seem to not work properly, and I have had to add dozens of manual permissions on a per-user basis
    - Often, users open a file in read-only mode, without any reason, and can't modify it
    - Often, users open a file with full write access, but then cannot save it and have to use a "save as function".
After having looked all over the Internet and on the Apple's discussions forum, it seems like this issue has been around for quite some time now:
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?forumID=702&threadID=&q=smbANDpermissions&objID=f702&dateRange=thisyear&userID=&numResults=15&rankBy=10001
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1546867&#1546867
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=647251
And no real answer/solution has been provided by Apple yet.
I also looked on Samba related pages, and it seems like these issues were Samba related (both ACL/OpenLDAP and Microsoft Office file handling issues), and the current version of Samba (3.0.23c) seem to have solved lots of issues in these areas:
    http://us1.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.0.23c.html
Apple ships Samba 3.0.10 (16 Dec 2004) with 10.4.8, which makes the shipping version at list 15 versions (and 18 months) behind the current Samba release (30 Aug 2006).
People within the company are obviously quite unhappy with the situation and beyond me looking like a fool for migrating from Windows Server to OS X, I now need to find a solution to the issues.
I would like to know what is the official and Apple recommended way to solve this issue.
    Kind regards,
    Pejvan
It seems like Apple is totally ignoring the issues, users are facing with SMB shares, while their emphasize as a selling point how OS X Server is a great "windows file" server.

    Hiya
    Thanks for the reply.
    >Is there a UPS involved?
I wish there had been. I might not be having to deal with it now! :-)
    >If you boot from the Install Disc & use System Profiler there, does the Same RAM situation? Did you physically >check those slots? Thinking maybe the OS is kicking them out on bootup?
I've had the following suggested to me on another forum - "My guess on the RAM error is this. You have a processor that wants the RAM to be dual channeled and since it reads both A slot are populated it wants both B slots to be populated. Remove A2 and put it in B1"
But unless it is degrading performance I'll probably just leave it.
    > Still can't get it to boot from the Clone holding the Option/alt key at bootup?
I can get it to boot from the Clone using the option key but it's a pretty random event. I can try for ages and then suddenly it'll work. Or it may work first time. It does seems to work more easily after a PRAM zap. The funny thing is that once it is booted up it will re-start in any way I want it to (the boot volume, the clone, a disk, single user mode etc). It is just hard to boot from a full shutdown.
I'm thinking that if I ca get the start-up issue fixed then I can fix the RAID issue at my leisure and even add the hard-drive that the clone is currently on to the RAID array.
    Thanks again.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.5.2 and Time Capsule - Auto-portmapping Issues

    Hi,
So I recently installed Mac OS X Server 10.5.2 onto my Mac mini media center. During the "Standard Server" Setup Assistant, it detected my Time Capsule and asked for the TC's password to setup automatic portmapping. After getting things up and running, OS X Server apparently sends a refresh of the ports every hour to the TC, which also reboots it. Needless to say, this has caused huge issues in getting the first backup from all my Macs completed.
I disabled the auto-portmapping by changing my TC's setup password. Now, OS X Server is hitting the TC with a auto-portmap request every MINUTE. This is rather annoying as it's essentially spamming my logs on both OS X Server and the TC. Anyone know how to turn this feature of OS X Server off?

I can relate to this thread.
    Setup:
I have a Macmini running OS 10.5.2 server and a TimeCapsule router connected to cable modem.
I have two other machines that backup onto TimeCapsule via TimeMachine.
    Problem:
My Macmini server backs-up with TimeMachine locally via USB drive, not to TimeCapsule... Yet I have the same problem. Which is: everytime the server runs TimeMachine, TimeCapsule router disconnects from the internet as the macmini "prepares" the directly connected USB drive. (orange light on front implies that it completely resets itself) It reconnects for the duration of the backup, then resets the router again during the "Preparing..." phase of backup.
I believe the diagnosis implied by the original tread title is incorrect due to the fact that I have seen the same problem with port mapping completely disabled on the TimeCapsule router.
Something else is going on when TimeCapsule goes through "Preparing..." that is the cause of the problem

  • Upgrading Mac OS X Server 10.6 to Mac OS X Server 10.6 to fix issues

I have a new XServe that was migrated from a G5 10.5 Server. Mac OS X 10.6.2 appears to have caused some issues which I did not realize until I attempted the 10.6.3 upgrade which utterly failed. It appears that 10.6.2 is not running many cli tools and in 10.6.3 I have found the entire var dir at least is incorrect. Tools in 10.6.2 that are not working include locate, ln, and man if not more.
I would like to reinstall. This server is bound to a AD server and I have read that you can upgrade 10.6 server to 10.6 server so I wanted to verify this as it would be the simplest way for me to do this.

I made a clone of the server boot drive and ran some test to see what was possible. This can be easily done by erasing a drive and then installing a fresh Mac OS X Server 10.6. Upon reboot supply the serial number and then it will ask to migrate the data and you can choose the existing install (in my case I had one clone with 10.6.2 and one with 10.6.3). After this I tested to see that the OS was in good shape unlike the 10.6.2 which was missing key unix functionality (man, ln, and others). I then updated with the Combo updater to 10.6.3 v1.1 and all was well.
