Mac pro 1,1 (using 10.6.8 - Need 10.7) thanks to Lightroom 5

Hello has anyone with the
mac pro 1,1 (aprox year 2007) been able to use Lion OS 10.7 or above?
its a Dual core intel Xeon 2.66 L2 4MB
I upgraded my video to ATI radeon HD 5770
I have been running nicely on 10.6.8 with CS6 / Lightroom 4
but now i need to go to 10.7 OSX to use LR 5
has anyone had success using 10.7 or above on these mac pros.?
holding out on this old soldier till the new units launch this fall! hope i can make it
i cant seem to find anyne in the threads who has worked this out.
thanks in advance!
Ben

I'm in the same boat.  I have a 1,1 and LR5 won't run on 10.6.8.  I'm upgrading to 10.7.5, which I hear isn't as stable as 10.6.8, but not awful (well, I should know this...I still have 10.7.5 on my 2011 MBP and it runs fine).
The lack of EFI64, while there are workarounds, is probably the thing that will push me to upgrade, and for a desktop, I won't be continuing with the Mac Pro series.  I enjoy Apple's work on their laptops--they're built beautifully, and I got lucky owning a 1,1--the best built of the series, but I had bouts of frustration trying to upgrade it.  I know I can get the same power with a self-built machine, despite the lack of thunderbolt...which isn't as useful for desktops given PCIe is enough.
But that's it.  The Mac Pro 1,1 is starting to show its age.  Natively 10.7.5 will be its last OS X that it can support.  7 years ain't bad for a desktop!  If I can get to 10, that would be great, but I'm missing SATA III and other technologies.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

  • External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder

External Firewire HDD causes hangs on my Mac Pro & HDD lag using finder.
I have an 2008 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66hz, 10GB Mem, ATI HD4870 with 4 internal 1 TB Drives. I have 3 external HDDs (2 USB + 1 FW400). The 2 USB HDDs are for Time Machine and backups.
The external FW HD is a 1TB bootable clone of my Internal 1 TB boot HDD.
I have 2 problems ... somethimes when using finder or opening a folder, copying files, starting or quiting a program, I get the spinning beach ball that seems to hang the Mac.
I power off the external FW HDD and everything starts to work. I get an error about the device going offline, I then power the FW HDD back on and all is good.
It seems the external FW Drive tends to hang the system. It occurs pretty frequently.
    Any recommendations?
The other issue is that when I use finder to go to a folder, I seem to have to wait for all these drive to spin up. You can hear them all start whirring.
is there a way to remove that lag?

If you recently moved to Snow Leopard you might look for new firmware for your external drive. I would also get DiskWarrior and run that on the external and consider programs like Drive Genius. You might also back it up and wipe it and restore the data. After that I'd consider looking at a new external.
Sleeping drives that take time to spin up after waking....I'd like to learn how to stop that myself. Be sure the Energy Saver in System Preferences is set to not put drives to sleep when possible. Even then my drives will go to sleep and I have up to 6 external added at times and they take quite a while to all spin up. I've never found a way to prevent that.
BTW...external USB drives on a MacPro? Really? Even for backup....

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro for home use

    Hello guys,
I've been using usual Windows PCs at home (watching movies through HDMI, playing a few games - Counter Strike and random racing games), browsing internet, working in PS and Light room etc, but mostly for watching HD movies. But I was able to get myself Early 2008 Mac Pro - 10gb memory, two dual core intel xeon processors, 256 Ati Radeon graphics cards and 1tb ssd hard drive. Now I wanted to know how good is Mac Pro for home use? As I said I don't do many things with my windows based PC and wanted to switch to faster, quieter mac pro. Any opinions?  How good it is as a home entertainment center?
P.S. Counter strike is available now for Mac, so I don't really care about other games.

dump the 2600XT and there I would pay for a Mac Edition AMD 7950, else PC card
    1TB SSD is unusual gift
even though 8 cores it is 6 yrs old and most things don't use 8 cores that much, it predates the i7-920,
USB3 has to be added if you want it or put USB3 on your LAN router is what I do.
It does not get the official nod of support from Apple for Windows 8/8.1 but it does if you want run 7 or 7 Pro (dual cpu support)
FBDIMMs have gotten better and cheaper if you want or need to, many do, often due to early death.

    No.
The entire enclosure is tuned for both external jack placement, EMI-RFI radiation, airflow, and for cooling. You need exactly the correct shell and fans for the electronics you wish to install in it.

  • How is the performance of Mac Pro if i use it as host for windows and linux virtual machines.

How is the performance of Mac Pro if i use it as host for windows and linux virtual machines.
I am planning to buy a high performance PC to run my Windows and Linux servers as vitrual machines for my testing purposes.
Initially i planned to build my own computer with recommended configurations but considering space constaints and cooling factors i think Mac Pro can be a choice. But need some inputs if Mac pro (Intel Xeon E5, 12 GB RAM) is good for running virtual Machines.

You could even run Windows natively and still run your VM servers.
I have seen reports and such on MacRumors and elsewhere - run Windows natively as well as VMs (can also do testing and run Mavericks in a VM under Mavericks)
The fast internal PCIe-SSD, plus 6 or 8 cores, and 32-64GB RAM. Of course for $5,000 for 8-core, some Thunderbolt storage and 32GB/64GB RAM you can buy some serious hardware.

    Explanations:
Folder Depth: This number indicates how many folders are nested inside each other. If a disk contains only three
folders and Folder A is inside Folder B and Folder B is inside Folder C, then this disk has a maximum folder depth of
three. Folders nested too deeply can cause software compatibility problems.
Property List: This is a standard file format for storing data and is often used to store preferences. The names of
these files normally end with a .plist file extension. Corrupt property list files can cause system instability.
Resource Data: This is an older file format for storing data and was often used to store preferences. The names of
these files normally end with a .rsrc file extension. Corrupt resource data files can cause system instability.
System Symbolic Link Files: These are files used by the operating system that are similar to aliases. If these files are
damaged it may prevent startup or cause system instability.

Went back to Disk utility and now it says that my hard drive doesn't need repair! whats going on! can anyone help?!
    Thank you

    Two things off the top:
128MB are GUID partitions that are not user volumes.
There is also a 200MB EFI partition as well.
Drive Genius needs to get their program updated.
You need to work from an "emergency" boot drive to repair your boot drive, RAID or no. I hope you are and not from CD or DVDs.
Forget about Permissions. They are very minor. They only have to do with ownership and security and based on what is in
    /Library/Receipts
Trying to verify? all you want to do is repair and rebuild.
If you ran DU and DW and did repair and rebuild and WROTE NEW DIRECTORY and the problem remains, erase and restore, or...
+I am useless with RAID and have no idea...+
Don't use it except to test, learn, experiment with. But not for system drive.
Above I asked, "are these a matched pair of drives" ie, same make, (looks like same size), vendor, model? they should be. Less chance of trouble if nothing else.
ON the boot volume, do a Get Info when you click on the drive, look for "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" and make sure it is NOT CHECKED. It can't be to repair permissions and be bootable.
The underlying cause of disk errors may be marginal or bad RAM. Test those FBDIMMs. Run Apple Hardware Test and Memtest (even Microsoft uses Memtest for Vista).
Drives rarely break. Systems do. Directory and btree catalogue and volume information blocks do.

  • HD setup in Mac Pro to be used as Server

I've searched through the various hard drive posts here on the lists, and think I am actually more confused than I was before.
We are currently running Tiger Server on a Dual 2 G5 and are preparing to migrate to Leopard Server on a new 8-core Mac Pro (I wanted an Xserve, but given the tight purse strings lately, will happily settle for the Mac Pro!!). I will be doing a clean install and then migrating settings, accounts, etc. over to the new machine. I'm solid on server administration, but not so much on the nuances of various hardware configurations. I've been trying to figure out the best hard drive setup, but have quickly become confused by the overwhelming abundance of (and occasionally conflicting) recommendations out there.
I've seen some who swear by a RAID 1+0 set up {two sets of mirrored drives that are then striped...or is it a set of striped drives that are then mirrored?!? You can see my dilemma...}, while others swear off of such a setup; lots of STRONG recommendations in favor of a small OS disk and second data disk (perhaps a solid state drive for the OS and a regular drive for the data?); even recommendations for multiple drives with 2 partitions that are RAIDed in ways that made my eyes bleed just trying to figure them out.
Bottom line: what would you recommend hard drive wise for a Mac Pro that's going to be a primary server for a small private school? I would like the best combination of reliability / uptime and speed. Assume anything is possible (within reason--obviously a 16 bay external RAID is out of the question), and, if possible, include specific drive recommendations (I've seen LOTS of posts steering me as far away from Seagate as I can get because of high failure rates / firmware issues...any thoughts on the WD Caviar Black vs. the WD RE3 Enterprise?).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi, I posted a threaded awhile back about my experiences setting up our small office servers. Perhaps some things might help you in your project.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1697924&tstart=0
Note, on our archive server we are running is a raid 10. However it is running on 10.4.11. If you are running leopard, it probably might not be a good idea.
    Main server: G5
    OSX Server 10.5.7
    boot drive = raid 1
    data drives (x8) = raid 5
    Arch server: G4
    OSX client 10.4.11 (using sharepoints)
    boot drive = raid 1
    data drives (x10) = raid 10
I also STRONGLY recommend AGAINST seagate drives, especially the deadly 7200.11 and ES.2 drives. They are a firmware hassle, and not worth any discount prices of what they are being offered at.
On my raid 5, I've lost 2 drives (within 10 mins of each other 0_0) crushing the raid to pieces.
On my raid 10, I've lost 2 drives. I'm scared to restart or shut down the computer, as this is I guess the issue with the seagate firmware(s) in question. Drive data is intact, however are not recognized, thus degrading the raid.
If you buy external enclosures from sonnet w/the drives (which is good as they come with free advanced replacement; great service) call them and see if they can give you WD RE3s instead. A much better drive.

  • Can I keep 2 video cards in Mac Pro if only using 1 at a time?

I have an ATI Radeon HD 2600 and an NVIDIA 8800GT for my Mac Pro (early 2008).
Been having issues with my NVIDIA card since the 10.6.4 update as well as issues with Photoshop CS5. Im finding out that its probably better off to go the ATI for general OSX & CS5 use.
However, I want to keep my NVIDIA 8800GT for Boot Camp/Gaming--can I keep both cards plugged into the x16 slots and just move the monitor cable when I boot back and forth?

I have a question sort of relevant to this discussion. Had my 8800GT start to fail on me in my MacPro1,1 - in desperation I disassembled the card, cleaned it, applied fresh thermal compound/padding, and stuck it back in. To my amazement the card actually began working again! Before failing a few days later ; ;.
I ordered a replacement 8800GT on ebay for a considerably low cost, but before it arrived my computer began behaving normally again. From what I'm understanding from this thread, there is absolutely no benefit to installing both cards in my computer at the same time? If that's the case, I'm going to tuck the backup card away and keep riding my self-repaired card until it crashes again.

  • Problems setting up RAID on a Mac Pro 2.1 using all 4 drive bays

    Hi,
I'm trying to repurpose my Mac pro as a network storage device and have bought 4 x 3TB WD Red drives so I can use it as 6TB of storage that is mirrored. I'm running into several problems and could do with a bit of advice.
I have tried booting from the OSX Snow Leopard installer and running Disk Utility to setup the RAID 1 system, but every option I try ends up with an error message saying it failed because it was "Unable to find RAID"
If I actually go ahead and install the operating system it will allow me to use Disk Utility setup up the RAID systems on the drives, but only 3 of them as it won't allow me to use the boot disk.
Is it actually possible for me to create a setup where OSX is installed on a RAID system? Currently I'm trying to install OSX to an external drive so it will allow me to setup all 4 of the internal drives as a RAID system...and I was hoping once that is done I can install the operating system on an internal drive
I also tried partitioning one of the drives so that I could install OSX on that and use the rest of the storage for RAID, but the install kept failing.
Can anyone recommend any solutions for this? Currently it seems like my best option might be to permanently use a small external HD as the boot disk, leaving the 4 internal drives to function fully as a RAID system
I was hoping to set up 2 pairs of striped drives that are mirrored. I think this is RAID 10?
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    A couple different ideas.
Install OS X somewhere else, then use CCC to clone to your array.
    Don't use 1+0 type array.
Invest in SoftRAID and set up a 3-drive mirror - you have to shutdown to swap drives, but you can do a better mirror and faster rebuild plus it uses all drives in a mirror for reads so performance is enhanced.
People had mixed results and support using a 4-drive mixed mirror+stripe setups.
Apple's "Pro RAID" card has had I think poor support, limited to 2.2TB but could do RAID5.
Put the system on PCIe SSD blade XP941, bootable in Mac Pro 1,1 and above running 10.5.x and above; and then have a good clone and restore, and put all the data on your array - and I would still go for a simpler mirror-only with http://www.softraid.com

    see question above

I am in my late 60's so I can't imagine all the changes and questions to what to do but... new Macs do not boot from an OS the pre-dates it.

The PowerMac G5 came out in Sept/Oct 2003 and shipping with10.3.0/
I would do a clean install. Than install all apps from scratch.
Upgrade CS5 first ahead of time if you want Migration or Setup Assistant.

Then pick up the ATI 5770 AND upgrade to 10.6.8.
Same price for a good card that will work and helps to have 1GB VRAM.
There aren't any other real choices let alone less expensive.
