Mac Pro 5.1 (Mid 2010) with Ati Radeon 5870, I can't install Maverick, don't support the graphic driver

I have a Mac Pro with Ati radeon hd 5870 1024 MB, after the first reboot in the installation of Maverick, the screen does strange things as if the driver does not support.

Hello pitin,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Best of luck,

  • GPU Expansion Chassis Mac Pro 5,1 / Mid-2010

    Hi,
I got a GTX 690 graphics card and would love to install it into my Mac Pro as an additional graphics cards (only rendering). I do know that I need somehow external power. So does anybody have a clue or a recommendation for an external GPU expansion chassis?
    My current setup:
    Mac Pro 5,1 / Mid-2010
3,33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon Westmere
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
    Many thanks.

  • IMovie 10 on an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB?

Will iMovie 10 ever be installable on an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB?

They updated iMovie to 10.0.1 so it will work with these Mavericks machines:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6023
"Installing iMovie (2013) previously required a computer with an OpenCL-capable video card. This requirement was removed, and you can install iMovie version 10.0.1 on any Mac with OS X Mavericks."

  • Thunderbolt update V1.2 is not supported on my system: Mac Pro 12 Cores (mid 2012) with Mac OSX 10.8.3

I'm trying to connect an external 8 Tera thunderbolt hard drive to my Mac Pro 12 Cores (mid 2012) with Mac OSX 10.8.3, and it is not recognizad, so I tried to make the thunderbolt upgrade V1.2, and a windows appears and says: "this software is not supported on my system"
Please tell me waht to do.
    thanks a lot.

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays andhigh-performance data devices through a single, compact port. It sets new standards for speed, flexibility, and simplicity. And it’s on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini.
I don't see mention of the Mac Pro.

  • How to update a MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 with SSD?

I know that this question probably been asked many times before, but i can't really find the answers to my specific questions.
I want to update my MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 / 2,66-GHz Intel Core i7-processor, 8 GB memory, running latest Mavericks version (full specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP581?viewlocale=nl_NL) with a SSD (i think a 500GB) to speed up my MacBook Pro.
I have about 400GB of data, personal and work related (mostly design work) that is really important to me of course. I use 3 harddrives (one offsite) at the moment to backup everything using Time Machine which works great, because i always can fall back on it when i delete something accidentally.
The physical installation looks quite simple to do, but i have some questions about the entire procedure i hope someone can help me with:
Which SSD will fit in my Macbook Pro the best (specs)? What to look for?
And what about TRIM support to make SSD last longer, i heared that Apple default drives that come with the Mac will support TRIM, but what about any other SSDs on the market do support it and if so which ones?
There are different ways to do install SSD, but what is best procedure?
Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner or restore from Time Machine?
Clean install with Bootable USB flash drive with Mavericks and restore from Time Machine?
Buy a USB enclosure for SSD and Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner first and boot it to check and than install the drive?
Could anybody help me with this?
    Thank you.
    Krijn

Look here for the maximum memory for each MBP model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/actual-maximum-ram-capacity-of-mac s.html
The limit is given by the memory controller ("northbridge").
There are no thermal drawbacks expanding the memory to the maximum supported limit...
However, as explained, often Apple did specify an "official" maximum RAM amount which is in reality shorter than the real value, simply because, when the machine was launched, memory sticks of the proper size for giving maximum capacity were not available.
Apple never revises the specs after the launch...
But this did not happen in your case: the maximum memory for mid-2010 Core machines appears to be effectively just 8 Gb, form the page linked above...
Final remark: in my experience, the SSD counts much more than memory for speeding up a laptop! As you already have 8 Gb, there is little value to expand to 16Gb even if it was posisble. Better to invest the same money in a  larger SSD...
I expanded mine because it was equipped with just 4 Gb, and purchasing 16Gb Corsair was costing as 8 Gb Crucial. However, it was not a wise choice, those cheap Corsair memories were bad, the seller had to exchange both sticks...
If I could come back, it was better to spend more and buy Crucial memory sticks!

  • Monitor goes dark on 2008 Mac Pro Tower with ATI Radeon 5870 Card

I have a 2008 Quad Core Intel Mac Pro Tower running 10.6.8.
The original graphics card had trouble with HD movies of any kind and eventually my screen would sometimes not turn on (stayed black) when the computer was turned on.
So I replaced the graphics card for both reasons to a ATI Radeon 5870 PCIe with a GB rather than the 256 that came with the machine.
The problem was solved. I got a new monitor, one that is like the latest ones and all has been working great for a few years.
Then recently the monitor started going dark while the computer was on. (no screen saver or anything like that, I can be in the middle of work on a photo or video).
    Trouble shooting I have tried.
A forum said drag the mouse to the hot corner for a while and then back. Well, I tried, assuming I was dragging the mouse to the corner. Didn't work.
I tried using the keyboard commands to shut down the computer. It didn't work.
I tried plugging the keyboard into other USB ports and tried to shut down the computer. No luck.
The only thing that works is shutting down the computer with the power button.
on start up the monitor is back on.
Sometimes it works for days like this, other times the monitor stays on only minutes.
The monitor is fine. Tested my old monitor on the computer to make sure it wasn't my new monitor.
    So the questions are:
    Can it be over heating?
is it worn out, toast, done and or dead and dieing?
Should I buy a replacement graphics card VS finally upgrading and getting a new computer (lots of $$$$ but then I do work in HD Video so....)
    any help is appreciated
    thanks
    john

Replacing FBDIMMs would be today inexpensive and worth doing.
No one knows if heat is an issue without your using thermal sensor monitor. Probably want to up the default fan speeds while at it.
And because you don't have Lion+ then even more reason to setup a small maintenace volume on another drive with OS X basic system for repairs. In fact you should always have a bootable backup or two  you can rely on.
Restarting may work, or it  may be you have now new issue with corrupt fies or directory that a safe boot even is no guarantee of fixing.
When in doubt, try a clean new OS install on another drive.
    And FBDIMMs: $25 for a 2x2GB set on Amazon.com
You want to get  the most out of what  you have, a small investment  in RAM,  maybe recycle those drives for 2-4TB units. And an SSD will have system responding better and perform better.
My guess, the 5870 wasn't needed and was overkill and a 5770 for almost  half would have been more than adequate.

  • MacBookPro3,1 runs well with 10.6.8 but can't install Mavericks or Mountain Lion

I have an old "Santa Rosa" MBP from August 2007.  It runs 10.6.8 perfectively well but I thought I'd install Mavericks to see what the future is like.  Unfortunately it failed midway through the install with a "hardware issue" message and a request for reboot.  Fortunately it hadn't changed the OS on the hard disk so all I had to do was go into Startup Manager and boot the old installation.
I then tried to install Mountain Lion onto a USB drive and it gave the same hardware/reboot message.  Curiously I can safe-boot into Mountain Lion.
I ran the Apple hardware tests and everything passes.  The top of the kernel panic file in /USB/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ reads:

One complication with the machine is that it had the NVIDIA cracked soldering problem.  A year ago I sent the motherboard to a shop in California that put on a new graphics chip and it's run well since then although it reports 128MB of video RAM instead of the standard 256MB.
This model is supposed to run everything up through Mavericks.  Is there anything obvious I've missed?

  • A lot of beach balls - Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2010

    Problem description:
    Hi, I have a MacPro 5,1 Mid 2010.
    6 core 3.33ghz
    24GB OWC RAM 1333mhz
OWC Mercury PRO 256GB SSD installed in 2nd optical slot w/ Yosemite
OWC Mercury Electra 480Gb for Bootcamp in slot 1
    3 ST31000340NS 1TB, 2 in Raid 0; all HFS journaled.
Unchecked “Put hard disks to sleep”
I constantly have the beach balls in lots of apps, seems like the computer is freezing frequently. I'm posting the logs that come out most often, and also a full startup log.
I was upgrading from an Imac 27” i5 mid 2011 that was noticeably faster… Which is strange considering the power of this Mac Pro.
Any ideas? I read a lot on apple support forums so I’m also including etrecheck log
    Thank you!
**Update** I think I found part of the problem; I removed all my fonts from Suitcase Fusion 5; It seems like my suitcase fonts are corrupting Font Book (threw a lot of font errors in console), but I need those fonts for graphic desing; Is there another way of adding them than copying the SuitcaseFusion.Fontvault File?
Though I still have occasionnal beach balls from clicking and opening apps.

    Thanks for your help!

You have turned OFF GateKeeper, thereby eliminating the protection built into Mac OS X from non-signed downloads. Legitimate downloads from registered developers are signed with their registered signatures, and stuff that is not signed should not be downloaded onto a system you appear to be using for business purposes.
So many entries in the Hosts file sometimes indicates the installation of pirated software.  You have a number of very invasive and quite questionable items kernel extensions installed on your Mac, and do not appear to be keeping them up-to-date.
Why do you need aftermarket key mapping software Karabiner? Mac OS X has key mapping built in.
If you insist on using third-party VPN, you should use one that is up-to-date. I expect some of the XPC errors are coming because of your antique VPN software.

So my quick assessment is that your Mac is unstable because you have added too much Junk. [Junk is defined as stuff that is perfectly good, but you do not happen to need right now, such as the things in your attic.] Clean out the attic and your Mac will run more smoothly.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 (mid 2010) constantly crashes / reboots

I'm running the Marverick on Mac Pro 5,1 and over the last 4 weeks it is rebooting itself every frew hours. On a few occasions it happened before I've managed to save my work - meaning all changes were lost. It's really irritating as you can imagine.
    Here's the error report:

  • I have a mac pro 5.1 mid 2010.

I want to know if anyone has tried any of these cards with pci expres thounderbolt II x4 I /
    HP Thunderbolt-2 PCIe 1-Port I/O Card
Asus Thunderboltex Ii Thunderbolt Adapter - Pci Express 2.0 X4 (thunderboltexii)

There are no known ways to connect a ThunderBolt display to that Mac.
If you are in the US, there is a refurbished Mini DisplayPort:
Refurbished Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel)
     Originally released September 2010
... showing in the refurbished list at this writing. Apple-refurbished items are in pristine condition and carry full warranty and are eligible for AppleCare extension to three years coverage.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 mid 2010 motherboard memory module pins damaged

    Hi everyone,
This morning, after another computer crash I've decided to get rid of the dust inside of the tower.
When I put back the bottom, memory bodule I've noticed that it wasn't going in very smoothly - to realise that I've damanged some pins connecting the module to the motherboard (image attached).
I'm now trying to figure out what to do with it - is just the pin part replacable on the motherboard or do I have to replace the whole motherboard?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

That is a remarkable amount of damage. Did you capture a foreign object between the connectors? Check the mating connector.
I have used a pen-knife (very small flat blade) or screwdriver to push similar pins back into position.
If you cannot straighten them enough, or if any pin breaks off, the backplane board (that holds that connector) would have to be replaced. A used backplane board should not be expensive, as there is not much failure-prone stuff on it, so they should be plentiful on the Used market. Note that the Processors are on the slide-out shelf -- do not order the processor board by mistake.

  • Can i upgrade my mac pro 6.1 late 2013 with amd radeon r9 gamer series ram

    Processor -3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
    Memory    -16 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics   -AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB
    AMD Radeon Memory R9 Gamer Series Memory 16GB (2x8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) CL11 1.65V Unbuffered RoHS R9316G2401U2K

There are no 240 pin slots (or slots of any description) on the Apple cards. The RAMs are on the reverse side of the board, and have thermal contact with the central cooling core. I doubt anyone would support modifying the Apple cards to install different RAM.

You have the misfortune of having purchased a model identifier 6.2 MBP that has a history of GPU problems.  There was a recall on these models but that has expired.
You may have the logic board replaced at your expense.
Or you may download this software:
    https://gfx.io/
It will allow you to disable the discrete GPU which should stop the kernel panics.  You will be able to run the MBP on just the integrated GPU but at the expense of graphics performance.
    Ciao.

  • System frozen after 2 min. in Macbook Pro (mid 2010) with OS X 10.6.8

Hello, I'm hoping you can help me.
I got a real trouble with my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) with OS X 10.6.8. It's simple, after at least 2 minutes working, the system gets frozen and the spinning wheel of the death keeps to eternity .
Because of this I decided to reinstall OS X with my original DVD, erasing and creating new partitions on my HDD. When the reinstallation was done, the same issue appeared, the system got frozen when I was configuring it for the first time after installation .
Now I've replaced the HDD and after installing OS X again, the same issue keeps appearing .
I omit that have launched AHT with no hardware errors, reset the NVRAM and PRAM, SMC, etc.
I really need help because I'm desperated.
Have a good day and many thanks in advance.

That's tough, try to hunt down a good service provider, ask the people you if they know of one.
Just to let you know, I had my 2010 replaced TWICE!
That's why I think that may be your problem, I hope it's not.
    Best of luck

  • The display brightness can't be adjusted in Windows 7 under Bootcamp 4, iMac 21.5 (mid 2011) with ATI Radion 6770M..

The display brightness of my iMac 21.5 (mid 2011, with ATI Radeon 6770M) can't be adjusted in Windows 7 installed under Bootcamp 4. I tried moving the brightness glider either with apple keyboard hotkeys (on-screen glider), or within Windows control panel brightness control (within the power option), but the brightness remains the same. I've had all software (Lion, bootcamp, windows 7) up to date. Please help. Thanks.

I posted a similar case to yours a month ago and it seems we're in a minority on the problem.  What I have learned over this month was that Bootcamp drivers version 4 (Designed around OS Lion) was a BIG part of my issue with the ATI video.  The new IMacs seems to require a customized by Apple Verion 3.2 or 3.3 to operate normally.   Sadly, it's not as easy as just backing off version 4 and going onto 3.2 and getting the video slider back.   You need to reload Windows and avoid Bootcamp 4.0 as it seems a piece of V4 gets stuck in Windows.  I'm putting this suggestion to practise this week, guess I'll have more to say later.
