Mac Pro fans run at max speed with no load

I recently picked up a Mac Pro 12core and it's been working amazingly well for the past few months... in the past day or two though the fan has been ramping up to maximum and staying there. When this happens there are no processes taking more than 4% CPU and the system is never less than 99% idle. Resetting the SMC controller solved the issue for about 8 hours overnight, but when I started using the computer this morning the fan ramped up about 15mins into using it.
The temps (in degrees C) around the mac pro: (collected with iStat Server):
CPUs: 23,22
Ambient: 23
HD Bays: 23,25,24
Mem Banks: 22,21,25,25,25,27,27,22
Northbridge: 27
Power supplies: 33,36
As you can see, nothing is hot... I'm not exactly sure how to calm it down. Nothing is working any differently than it was, it's just VERY LOUD now where it was whisper quiet, haha

I did order it from the Apple Refurb shop and I think it'd fall into that timeframe (got it early November), but I was kinda hoping for some things I could try on my own before shipping it out?

2009 17" Macbook Pro fans running at max speed aafter hard drive upgrade.

I recently picked up a 17" 2009 unibody MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8ghz, 4gb RAM, SuperDrive and a Samsung 1TB hard drive. The system did not come with the original hard drive and I don't have any other hard drives to test and verify that the new larger hard drive is the cause. I have tried a clean install of Snow Leopard, Lion and even Mountain Lion but no matter what my fans always running at max speed (5k+ RPM). I have looked at iStat and the temps of any of the components in the machine never show more than 42*C so the fans should never be running at full blast. Oddly enough smcFanControl shows 0* temp but fan speds for both left and right are always 5.5k+ and very noisy. Using HDD Fan Control I am able to get at least the right fan to run at a controlable speed but its silence is drowned out by the left fan that still runs on full blast. I have already done multiple SMC resets and PRAM resets with no change in the condition. These noisey fans are driving me insane! I have run every available update as well. Is there a chance that the hard drive or something elses temp not being supported or detectable by OSX is causing the fans to default to the fail safe constant high speed?!

Well your just a regular pirate. There is no Mountain Lion disks, it's not even out of Beta and avaialble to the public yet
We thought you were just mistaken but now your tech handy enough to boot a Mac off a Linux live USB, so that means you've been bad and downloaded MT Lion off a P2P network or something.
If your beta testing 10.8 your bound to secrecy and not allowed to be discussing it and posting this sort of question on this forum, but the other one.
If you know anything, OS X must "talk" to the hardware or else the default setting is to race the fans. Linux doesn't do this by default as it's designed for generic PC's which a Mac may appear to be one it's not really. Apple only supports OS X and Windows 7 on Mac's, not Linux.
Obviously something on your machine is SEVERLY messed up in hardware, likely a dead sensor, you bought a used lemon that someone didn't want to pay to get fixed.

Why does my mac pro fan run at high speed?

My Mac Pro cooling fan started running at high speed. Tried all the shutdown and restart options but didn't help. Suggestions?

The fan runs if something is overheating or if a sensor has failed or there is a problem with the SMC. So, reset the SMC - Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). If that does not stop the fan from running then check for a runaway application:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If the problem still persists then create a new admin user account, logout of your account and log into the new account. See if this fixes the problem.
If none of the above help, then you may have a hardware issue such as a defective sensor.

Mac Pro Fan runs at full speed!!!!!

Just set-up my new 2.66 Mac Pro.....added an additional WD Raptor 10k rpm drive and was psyched to use my new heavy iron. I was shocked at how loud the fan noise was!!!!! Upon initial boot it ran full speed (louder than my old 2.7 Dual PowerMac) until I turned it off.
It was definitely not "quiet" as people have mentioned.
I remember all of the logic board issues with bad G5's in the past and am wondering if I have a dud. Anyone else experience the same issues?

2.66 Dual Mac OS X (10.4.7) 1 GB ram

My 10K Raptor took a week to 'settle in' (or get burned in) and it did seem to cause a hum from the case. Took out the Raptor, no hum or vibration. I also made sure it was seated tightly, and moved it to slot #4.
I ran a 6 hr ZoneBench 511MB test file 30x using 50 "zones" which gave it a good workout. I then ran Disk Utility Erase and under options, chose 7-way write (took a couple hours was all).
Might want to read the review from SilentPC on the 150GB Raptor series.
New Revision, New Noise?
I was ready to put the Raptor in an external case or something at one point (and people probably remember my posts, was a little over a week ago) but someone else told me to "give it time" and just give it a thorough series of tests (like zero the drive at least once). I always load a drive with large disk images when I first get it before putting it to regular use.

I also have a MacPro3,1 (2009) I believe and just started experiencing similar issues as described here.
I have scheduled sleep and start cycles and often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive or I find the computer booted in to disk utility mode.
I also often loose ethernet connectivity and have to try renewing DHCP lease several times before it will finally work.
Has anyone found solutions for this. I have looked at the console errors right before shutdown and don't really see anything fishy. Here are the last couple of lines before it looks like it shutdown.

Mac Pro early 2009 is Mac Pro4,1, anyway, I think you need to boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, then select startup volume and run repair disk.
Xcode is the latest one, by the way?

Macbook Pro Fans Running At High Speed

My MBP 17" CoreDuo 2.16ghz came back from having the Logic Board replaced at the weekend. All is well except that now the fans run at high speed all the time.
I have installed SMCFanControl, and the current readings are 45 / 113 degrees and the fans are running at 5500 rpm. I took the machine back to the Apple store but when I was there the fans didn't go above 3000rpm (typical huh?). It's nice that the case is now a lot cooler than it used to be but the fans seem very loud to me.
The question is, is this normal? I am not running anything very heavy duty at the moment. Any ideas?

I tend to agree with Ned on SMC fan control (that it arguably causes more problems than it solves).
I had a similar problem with mine recently having the fans run constantly and at full speed. My temperatures never approached yours, but it would fail to go to sleep etc.
I would start with the advice Ned gave you. This is the same path Apple Care led me down in trying to resolve the issue.
Ultimately though I had to do an archival install of the operating system. It is non-destructive so it wasn't a big deal. I just had to slowly re-install patches and observe behavior. Oddly I was able to patch back up to 10.4.9 without the issue re-occuring so the root cause is still a mystery to me.

Patch gone bad maybe? I tried re-applying the 10.4.9 combo before attempting the archival install route with no success. I know that has been suggested many times. Apparenty it solves many issues, but it failed to solve mine.

Mac Pro fans run full speed after installing Solid State Drives

I recently visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple store because my Mac Pro's fans were running at full speed after installing 2 solid state drives. The genius told me that it was because the drives themselves are so small they don't touch the metal tab on the motherboard that reads the drive's temperature, so it defaults to running full speed. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I've tried smcFan Control but it doesn't let me set the actual fan speed. I'm getting 5200 rpms on my Boost A and B fans, and this causes an insane amount of noise. Can anyone help?

Which model Mac Pro?
I have an SSD in a 2009 (MacPro4,1). I removed it from the 2.5 in stamped metal can, and just installed the bare circuit board onto the SATA connector. It does not make any contact with the metal tab below the SATA connector. The only trouble I have is that Tech Tool Pro says its temperature is not optimum when it does disk tests.

Ok, So now i'm pretty sick of the fan noise.
I've done PRAM reset, Power Management Reset to no luck.
So i decided to do some experiments.
As soon as the computer starts, Fans spool up to 6,000 and stay there. CPU Temp 42 Degrees Celsius.
Now My CPU temp does pretty well staying there. In Activity Monitor, No Processes of what so ever. Computer idles at 99% and only 1% being used by system.
So i decided to put the computer in the fridge. As soon as the temps went down 5 Degrees, to like 30 to 35 Degree Celsius, Fans idled at 2000 and as soon as the CPU temp is 40 Degrees, Fans spooled up and kept going all the way back to 6,000.
See as the temp drops on the computer, the fans do slow back down as the CPU temp drops from 40 to 35.
I called apple and the apple tech i talked to said that it seems the fan specs might be set out of whack. Meaning, the temps as which the monitor spools up the fans is set to low. He said it should be around 50 to 60 even 70 Degrees Celsius's before fans should spool up. He said the problem isn't the monitoring system since it does appear to be slowing down and speeding up the fans between 30 to 40 Degrees but it's spooling the fans up and to low of a temp than needed. He told me to take it to a Mac Genius sometime soon.
so before i do that, any apple geniuses what to take a stab on whats wrong and why it's doing this?

My fan runs continually, BUT, with several monitors watching core AND fan exhaust temps I have noticed something strange. The core indicates 28C while the exhaust jumps from 42C DOWN to -128C and then the fan races. While this is keeping the book cool as a cucumber it is driving my wife and now me up the wall. NO I don't have any hung processes. NO the CPU is not caught in a cycle requiring massive computing power. Regardless of the temp the fan runs at the 6200RPM max. Zapping PRAM and resetting the System Management will soon be followed by gravity resetting through my 2nd story apartment window. One way or another this needs to stop!

Mac Pro, Fans fire up full speed for no reason - randomly!

So, here is another fan issue with the Mac Pro, and I am at a loss. Perhaps someone can help me with this one. I have a Mac Pro I bought in mid '07, dual 2.66 GHz. I have 2 7300GT video cards, which don't have fans of their own to be making the noise...
The computer, when left doing nothing will ramp up full speed for God knows what reason. There is usually almost nothing open for applications, and no major processes running. Menu Meters shows the processor load to be minimal, not a heavy load that would cause heat-issues from processors working hard.
There is really no way to get the fans to slow back down either. The machine is still fully functional, I can open, close or work on software, so nothing is "frozen". I have quit all applications to no avail. The machine will not go to sleep when this occurs, and half the time will not power off using the shut down menu selection either; requiring a forced shut down. Upon reboot, it is fine... (until it decides once again to take off).
This is not the fans roaring when waking from sleep issue, I have had that one as well (bad ram).
Thoughts?

Last night, after I shut down, my fans slowly ramped up into high gear. They went to full rotation, and I let it whirr for four or five minutes, thinking it would shut itself off. It never did, so I just pulled the plug on the CPU. I plugged it back in five seconds later, and it stayed shut down after that.
It's been working more or less flawlessly other than this... most stable Mac I've ever had.

I'm a video editor working within Adobe Premiere Pro CC, and I edit all kinds of footage from DSLR all the way up to RED 5K. I have a Mac Pro (5,1), 6-Core 3.33Ghz with 32GB of DDR3 ECC 1333 MHz RAM. Also in there is a GTX 770 Graphics card with 4GB on board RAM, and a RAID controller.
The problem is that my system fans are CONSTANTLY kicking up to high gear. Whether I'm doing intensive or unintensive work with any kind of footage. It's always within premiere when they kick on. If I put the system to sleep they all go back to normal, but usually kick back on. It is terribly frustrating.
My system is out in the open, plenty of vintilation, and relatively dust-free.
Recently swtched graphics cards from a Quadro 4000 to this GTX, thinking the Quadro was the culprit, but the problem persists.
I've attached two screen shots of SMC Fan Control before and after the fans kick up to full speed. I don't know anything about the layout of these fans, or what does what. I also can't seem to run Apple Hardware Test to see if everything is fine...I try pressing the D key when booting up, but it just regularly starts up. Any other way to test the hardware?
I realize the graphics card will heat things up a bit, but this still seems abnormal. Can anybody help me troubleshoot? Or at least provide an explanation of the fan layout of the Mac Pro, or list some recommended fan speeds? I just can't seem to figure this thing out.

It does look abnormal, especially if Activity Monitor doesn't show any processes using much of the CPU's capability. Keep in mind that going full blast, your CPU can show up to 1,200% usage in Activity Monitor (six cores, two threads each).
First, we both have the same Mac Pro with the same amount of RAM. Based on Temperature Gauge (from the App Store), the intended minimum and maximum speeds for the fans are PCI - 750/4500, PS - 750/2800, Exhaust 750/2800, Intake 600/2800, BOOSTA 800/4000.
Working up, the Intake fan is at the bottom of the front grill. The Exhaust fan is at the back end at the same level. You've had the processor tray out. Inside the processor block (the box behind the DIMM slots with horizontal fins) is BOOSTA. There'd be a BOOSTB if you had two CPU's. Those three (or four) fans cool the CPU and RAM. Above all that is the PCI fan, which is set in a bit from the grill and, for some reason, doesn't fill it's space at the front so, theoretically, the air could blow into the PCIe area, make a U turn around the right side and go back through the fan again. Finally, behind the optical drive bay is the PS and the fan is at the front of the PS. There's also a fan on the video card, and I've never seen a monitor which could show that fan's speed or temperature.
I keep an eye on smcFanControl's temperature reading in the menu bar and when it heads north of 100ºF I start going to one of the higher fan speed settings I've established. That's probably being over-cautious but I like my Mac Pro. And if the fans can't do the job, it's time to blow the dust out, and that includes the dust inside the video card.

Why is my mac-pro ci7 running hot while working with imovie and eyetv?

I am creating short videos of ps-3 gameplays. For recording I use eye-tv and my mac is connected through a HD-Haupauge with my Playstation. When transferring the recording-file from eye-tv to i-movie and getting started to work on the video, my mac runs hot. I have to underpin the mac, so that there is enough space for cooling, which doesn't help that much.
What could be the reason? I bought themac last year in summer. I am not sure about my operation systems number.

Macbook Pro fan running at high speed but is not experiencing heavy usage

My computer is 3 years old and I've had no problems.
A few days ago the fan started whirring incessantly after the computer had been on for only 10 minutes or so, even when experiencing minimal usage.
This could be just a coincidence but the issue started about the same time I installed the latest security update, I'm on Yosemite.
Can anyone help?

My mac is running slow and fan running at high speed & very loud. On MRI diagnostic it passes everything except this error "CPU Proximity: Can't Read ". I did low level configuration and still having issue with unit.

No such option for moving song within playlist, only the up and down arrow which moves song from top to bottom list, so if it is #4 from top it will move to #4 from bottom. Stupid I know. I spent over an hour with Apple support, reinstalled itunes, restarted and rebooted computer. Networked with my laptop which is running 10.6.8 and itunes 10.4 and it can drag and drop. The final Apple support solution was to reinstall my operating system. I would prefer not to. Any other ideas?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.
