Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) runs slow even after bootup disk is repaired

My Mac Pro running OS X 10.6.8 continues to run exremely slowly even after the bootup disk was repaired and verified. I did a second safe boot then a regular boot and now I cannot even start any of the applicatsion.  E.g., I cannot start either Mail.app or Safari.
This ie s exremely upsetting and I would appreciate any help, advice, ... on what I should do to determine the problem.
VB

I have had Time Machine backups and I used to have online backups as well until the provider changed terms on me which made it so much more expensive (but that is another story). I have >600 GB available on my1 TB startup drive and I do have quite of a bit of my media files on an additional 500 GB hard drive.
However, your mentioning power outages and dorps/dips reminded me that such is indeed a problem where we live. My MacPro is wlays on and when I woke up one morning the login window was on so it obviously had restarted. Then just before  the Mac acted slower than molasses I do remember my UPS beeping but I admittedly sort of ignored it and forgot all about it since this kind of thing happens relatively frequently.
I just restarted the system now and everything seems back to normal again.
My question:  my Mac Pro as well as my monitor are connected to a 350 VA/200 W UPS.  What is the advantage of using a 1500 VA UPS?
Thanks.

  • Snow Leopard running slow graphics after reinstallation

    Hey everyone,
I have a very strange question. I've been using my Snow Leopard without any problems for quite some time, but a few days ago I decided it was time for a clean install. I installed the Snow Leopard without any problem, used Software Update to update to the latest version, and than I started noticing some graphic problems:
    1. Slow UI animations (i.e opening Applications Folder, Minimizing Using Gene Effect, etc.)
    2. QuickTime slowness - low fps when I tried playing a movie
    3. Adobe Flash problems - when I installed the latest version, Safari seemed to crash by the first sight of Flash on any site. I reinstalled since then and the pre-installed version seems to work
    4. In Desktop and Screensaver Preferences I am missing the Translucent Menu Bar option
    5. In System Profiler, under Display I have VRAM (Total): 32 MB
It somewhat reminds of the problem described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3479
Only that the resolution is to reinstall, which I did several times with the same DVD I had no problems with before, and nothing seemed to help.
Any ideas how to resolve those problems (well I think they are all related) are appreciated since it is rendering my Snow Leopard pretty much unusable.
    Thanks in advance

  • Mac Pro can't running two fire wire hard disks at the same time .

Mac Pro can’t running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which two hard disks have extra power from power socket . If i just insert one of them .No problem . If connect two Hds at the same time. Leopard cant find it and the Hds seem no problem. the machine must be restarted and then use one . No problem . I have formated the HD many times .even if which format is Fat 32 or Mac issue persists .Boot from installation CD used the disk utility . Issue stills . If i used one fire wire HD that get power from power socket and used one fire wire device . Leopard was no problem during this time . Whether is this design problem or my machine hardware problem? My Mac has been changed the logic board by Apple service . Do you have similar case in here????

I connect both hard disks that get power from power supply normally. Also have ever changed the format as GUID. Which always use the power cord . I felt confusion why the issue just happened connect both hard disks with extra power at the same time. If i used one hard disk connect to firewire port . Another firewire port connect other firewire device . No problem at all.

  • My Macbook Pro running slow even after format

Hello guys, I've had this problem with my 2009 unibody 13" Macbook Pro for at least a month. Last month I tried to reinstall OSX Lion which i previously had, but the install failed for saveral attemps (probably for my slow internet). I finally managed to get OSX Lion on and it was increadibly slow even no programs are installed so I reinstalled it again and again but the same problem still comes up. So i went to an Apple Store (Thailand) and the apple guy assisted me by trying harddisk permission repair, reinstalling the os again, none worked, i still get a super slow computer. So I went home and downgraded the os to snow leopard, it seemed to work just fine at first but after i install several (4-5) basic applications, it started to get slow again (still faster than when it was lion). Whenever i open two or three applications at once or even browsing a webpage alone i get the spinning rainbow cursor. Somebody told me its probably the harddrive, who do u think? please help - thanks.

Yes it is your hard drive.
Backup your files off the machine and before you reinstall OS X again, this time use the 10.6 disk > Disk Utility > Erase with Security Option > Zero All Data, make sure your ENTIRE hard drive is slected on the left.
Let that complete and install 10.6, then update to 10.6.8, that should be the fastest OS X version for that machine.
If you go to 10.7, it's going to slow down a little bit again.
If you can't complete the Zero erase (it takes some time to finish) after trying 2x and or still having problems after that, then the drive is causing the defective sectors and needs to be replaced.
Keep your boot drive below 50% filled for maximum performance, but never more than 80% filled.

  • MacBook Pro running slow even after RAM update.

I upgraded from 512 to 2GB of memory because Mac was running slow such as applications would some times take forever to open especially files on quicktime. After the upgrade though i have the same problem, Slow performance. Any advice or solutions?

Hi Vetty, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It would help to know exactly which model of MBP you have.
Also, how much free space do you have available on your HD? If under 10%, that is likely the problem.
    Some things you can try:
    Background Maintenance in Terminal
    1. Log in to an administrator’s account.
    2. Open Terminal (located in Applications, Utilities).
    3. Copy and paste in the following command (or type it exactly):
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
    4. Press Return.
    5. Type in your password when asked (note: you will not see anything being entered as you type your password).
    6. Hit Return.
    7. Wait until the Terminal prompt returns; this can take 5-10 minutes, but is usually under 5 minutes (the prompt returning will be your only notice that the tasks have finished).
    8. Quit Terminal.
Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc>restart>immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”)>at first screen go to Installer Menu>open Disk Utility>select your HD in the panel on the left side>click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).
Repair Permissions: Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>select HD in panel at left>click on Repair Permissions at bottom of main window and allow process to finish before quitting DU.
    Safe Boot
    PRAM Reset
    SMC Reset

  • Opening Final Cut Studio 3 Projects on Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) & MacBook Pro (Lion)

    Hi Everyone,
Right i've been trawling the forums in regards to Lion's compatibility with Final Cut Studio 3. There seemed to be a mixed bag of reports, some running FCP fine on Lion, others having issues.
For this reason alone I decided to keep my main editing system, my Mac Pro, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and not upgrade to Lion.
More and more frequently i've thought I need to get myself a MacBook Pro, for data wrangling on location and for some cheeky edit sessions when i'm away on jobs.
The thing is, all new MacBook Pros ship with Lion as their OS.
My question is twofold really. Firstly, I've read that Final Cut Studio 3 installs and runs fine on Lion systems, can anyone confirm this?
Secondly, do any of you know if i'll be able to swap between, and freely work on projects across the two different systems, namely a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and a MacBook Pro running Lion? is this an issue at all?
The last thing I want to do is spend three grand on a MacBook and then realise I have issues opening or working on projects from my MacPro (or vise-vesa)
As ever, your help would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

I've read that Final Cut Studio 3 installs and runs fine on Lion systems, can anyone confirm this?
Yes, FCS 3 installs and runs without issue on my Lion system.
There are a couple of careats however  with the primary one being  DO A CLEAN INSTALL OF THE OS AND THE APPS. Upgrade installs over major version changes are problematic.
do any of you know if i'll be able to swap between, and freely work on projects across the two different systems, namely a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and a MacBook Pro running Lion? is this an issue at all?
Again, not an issue in my world.

  • Snow leopard runs slow.

i hate using it.  i am not a gamer - so email, internet and occasionally work related - word, excel, etc.  What can i do?

Snow Leopard is the fastest OS X version still supported.
    It's faster than 10.5, 10.7 or 10.8.
So that means there is a problem with your machine.
    Emergency backup procedure
Drag and drop copy your users file folders (music, pictures, documents etc) to a regular external powered drive as soon as possible.
Do not use, setup or trust only TimeMachine at this time. Unmount and Disconnect all external drives once the backup process is completed.
If you have any over 4GB sized files, those won't copy to a standard formatted FAT32/MSDOS drive from the factory, if you need to save these 4GB+ files use another blank/empty drive and use Disk Utility to format it Option GUID format OS X Extended Journaled (or the standard default one for Mac's).
Mac's  cannot copy to a NTFS formatted drive.
I suggest you run through these user tips to identify the possible causes.
    Why is my computer slow?
And exhaust all your possible fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Then perhaps consider a defrag.
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
Or install a new boot drive in your machine with more RAM
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If this is too much for you, there are local PC/Mac techs that can perform the work for you and speed up your machine once again.

  • Snow Leopard running slow, freezing, not responding.

I am running Snow Leopard on Mac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB SDRAM.
Over the last few days the machine has gradually become slower and slower, the spinning wheel frequently appears and programs are not responding and the system freezes.
When I restart, on a couple of occasions a white screen with grey pixel blocks has flashed up during start up, other times it has frozen on the blue screen.
I have tried running Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, ClamXav, Onyx and disconnected all hardware, then finally I have reinstalled Snow Leopard but still seem to be having the same problems.
By the way, I am also running VMware Fusion, don't know if this is relevant.
    Any suggestion, please?

  • Mac Pro Snow Leopard Display will Sleep but Computer will not Sleep

    Equipment:
    Mac Pro Tower
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    30" Cinema Display
The computer has not been able to fully go to sleep since I bought it. (A refurb, but not from Apple's refurb store.)
As the title says, the display goes to sleep but the computer is still on. (Whether I select Sleep from the Apple menu, or with a keystroke.)
"Wake for network access" is not checked in the System Prefs.
I've disconected everything (inc. the monitor) from the back of the computer and the computer still won't go to sleep.
Reset PRAM and the "System Controller (the move where you power down, unplug the computer, press/hold the powder button for 5 seconds, plug in computer and start up).
I installed the PleaseSleep and the DeepSleep apps, but still no-sleep.
From Console, for the Sleep command:
    11/6/12 4:51:32 PM
    configd[15]
Sleep: Success - AC - Software Sleep

    com.apple.message.uuid: A3270153-6D75-4639-8125-3B105B537BCB

    11/6/12 4:51:32 PM
    configd[15]
    Wake: Success - AC

"I was not able to use the system disks 'cos the image on the screen appears completly distorted and i am not able to navigate the menus."
Never ran across that type of problem on Apple's message boards.
"I have temporarily fixed that using a ten days trial version of SwitchRes X. Everything works fine now but the Display preferences panel from MacOs, wich stays "in coma"."
In that case, are you now able to boot off your install DVD? If so, run the +"repair disk"+ option, when done boot back to desktop & run repair permissions.

  • Mac pro 13 inch running slow.

y MAC PRO 13 INCH HAS 150 GB OF WHICH I HAVE 55 GB LEFT IN THE HARD DRIVE IT IS RUNNING VERY SLOW.  I HAVE A LOT OF MUSIC AND PHOTOS I USE ITUNES MATCH.  Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GB 1067 MHz NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4.   Should i move all my stuff onto an external hard drive, by space on the cloud and move it there, any clean up apps i should use.  I know nothing about computers i just use them

If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

  • Anyone else's Snow Leopard running slower than version 10.5?

My hard drive crashed a few weeks ago and I decided to have the Apple Store upgrade my operating system to 10.6.3 and I have found that it's slower than the previous version. Also, Adobe InDesign doesn't print from the new version.
Is anyone having these problems?? This could make me revert back to a PC

Well, yes, if it was a new HD and your old drive was dead, they would have had to do an install from scratch.
If the old drive was still running they would have done an upgrade & migrate unless you told them otherwise. Problem with migrating is often higher powered apps like CS3, Final Cut, Aperture, etc. don't run well if at all and you end up having to do an erase & install anyway.
What is the exact model iMac you have, and how much RAM? What HD did you buy?
CS3 is old at this point and my understanding is Adobe does not support it on Snow Leopard. Are you experiencing the slowness just with CS3 or with everything (say, Safari, Office, iTunes, etc?)
