Mac Pro suddenly takes very long to boot and won't shut down... just spins

My Mac started taking very long to boot up... maybe 10 minutes before the icon bar becomes available.
Also, it won't shut down... it just spins. I've waited 30 minutes with no results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

CBuss,
The long boot cycle points to preference corruption. And not the kind that can be corrected with re-boots etc., Check Hard Drive>Library>Preferences to see if the listings make "visual" sense. If there are a lot of letters with circles over them and numbers interspersed, you are skating out on thin ice.
Back up everything now, then do a clean install of your current OS. Do not to an "archive". That will probably archive the corruption as well. Go up to Snow Leopard if you can. Add your data back manually as well. If you keep going with these lingering start ups, you will shortly get the "?" at startup instead of the Apple/ Chime and the long, expensive, recovery (by somebody else) will begin.
As for the 'shut down" issue.. I am still in the dark. Something is still "running" and canceling the shut down cycle.
Cheers
Toby

  • IMAC takes very long to boot and and shut down.

My iMAC 21" takes very long (15-20 mts) to boot up and become responsive. It also takes More than 5 mts to shut down. The HW test and disk utility do not report any issue. I have Erased the disk and re-installed OS X 10.9.2 two times. On the second re-install, I deliberately did not restore the backup from the time machine. It works well after it settles down. I changed the mouse and have cheked the Apple wireless keyboard.
The problems began after the last security update to the best of my recollection. Since there does not appear to be any HW issue and I have re-installed the software, I am unable to determine what else I can do to resolve the issue.

Hello. Thank you for responding to my message.
I have shut down the system at 8.28am local time (took about 2 mts which is not bad). I then restarted and it took more than 10 mts to reach the login prompt. After login, it took several more minutes until all the icons were displayed at the bottom. After clicking on Safari and reaching the top hits pages also took an unresonable amount of time considering it is a quad core MAC and I am on a fibre internet connection. (Other computers at home respond quickly). I have to add that I am experiencing intermittent performane issues even when the MAC settles down after the long startup time. i.e. get to see the coloured spinning wheel several times.
I have tried my best to cut down the log size but found many unique lines as the boot took so long. So, apologies for the length of the log. The System diagnostics section in the Console app is blank with no reports at all.

  • Mac OS X takes very long to shut down because processes are still alive

    Hello everyone!
Since the latest update to Safari 5.0.1, iTunes 9.2.1 and Trackpad Update, the system takes unusual long to shut down.
The screen gets the usual blue, a spinning wheel appears and is there for about 20-30 seconds.
Before the updates, it was about 5-10 seconds.
When booting in verbose mode, it tells me at shutdown that some core system processes (among them launchd and other boot stuff) are still alive (or, as the OS says, "PID XXXX is still alive").
The only thing to workaround (which isn't the solution for forever!) is to run "sudo shutdown -s 0" on the console.
Is there a way to avoid this waiting for still-alive processes?
    Thanks in advance!

I have just restored my hard drive and now I too have this same situation. Have you been able to resolve it. If so would you be good enough to tell me how.
    Cheers,

  • Apps take very long to update and with not much progress

Hi, i have tried to download some new apps and update some of my apps with my itouch, but it takes super long to update without success. Tried cancelling and installing again, tried off-ing and on-ing and even resetting the itouch but to no avail.
Even attempted to update through itunes but once again, it takes super long and super slow and end up with connection timed out. Please advise. Thanks.

    Craig,
Thanks for the tip. I'll call my customer to make him try it. I will know

  • Mac Pro gets stuck on the grey screen and won't finish booting

I have a Mac Pro 1, 1 recently (successfully) upgraded to snow leopard that gets stuck on the grey screen with the spinning rainbow cursor (after the apple logo and brief blue screen) and won't finish booting up. This happened after my computer froze up and I had to force quit.  I checked out the forums and I tried all the all the suggestions (like disconnecting peripherals) and appropriate disk utilities, saw no errors with the HD reported, and had no trouble doing a safe boot  (everything works o.k. there) or starting up from the software disk to perform the repairs.  I did notice that during the repair permissions command, it gets stuck in the last few minutes, the CD starts to chug along, and everything freezes and I have to force quit.  This happens every time I try it.  I eventually backed everything up, erased the HD and reinstalled the OS, reset PRAM and NVRAM, but I'm still getting the grey screen on restart.  Tech tool deluxe reports a "fail" on the video RAM, but everything else seems to check out.  Could it be a graphics card issue?   I did notice some funky visual glitches occurring prior to the breakdown.  Any other ideas?

I wouldn't trust Apple Disk Utility to do a hard drive repair, but I would go with TechTool Pro 5/6 if you have that instead of Disk Warrior from Alsoft.
Clone the drive, though you should have some bootable backup clones already; repair the clone; then boot and work from that drive. Always have a working copy of the system.
And off load all your data to other drives.

  • My Mac Pro 2006 keeps hanging and won't shut down

My Mac keeps hanging the circle keeps going round and round the have to manually shut down.  Now sometimes on start up it gets to my opening screen and the circle keeps going round and round I have to shut it down manually I can't even force quit.
    Thank you

It is usually called the Spinning Beach Ball Of Death. It means that an application is not responding. You can either  - Click and hold on the application's icon in the dock and a menu will pop up with the option to Force Quit. Select that and the application should quit; if not try selecting it again and it will often quit the second time or  -Hold down the three keys Command (cmd), Option (alt) and Escape (esc) together. This will show a Force Quit menu window. Select the offending application from the list of running applications and click the Force Quit button. Click on the Red close window button to dismiss the window.  Other than that you may see the SBBOD if the Mac is running slow for some reason - loading a large video or something like that - but it should clear once it has caught up with itself.  Another option to try is a good Disk Utility for the Mac. If you optimize your hard drive, it should help speed up your Mac and stop the rainbow beach ball from re-appearing.   Or just try another mouse. Mouse could be broke or mouse drivers are outdated.

IF IT DON'T START.HOLD DOWN FOR TEN SECONDS AGAIN.DON'T UN-PLUG IT.PUSH TO START AGAIN. DOS START-UP SCREEN WILL COME ON.USE KEYBOARD TO SELECT SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKS.CLICK ENTER. IT SHOULD START WITH LIMITED SOFTWARE TO RUN AND TROUBLE SHOOT. I JUST DID ALL THAT TO GET HERE TO THIS FORUM. DOESN'T SOLVE MY PROBLEM. BUT AT LEAST FOR NOW I AM ABLE TO SEARCH FOR MORE SOLUTIONS. DID I MISS SOMETHING? PLEASE HELP!! I'M RUNNING OUT OF OPIONS

    Hello BENG2112,
You may want to consider wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS at this point. Then we can take it step by step from there. We can then try to isolate what is causing the system to break down.
I would say fresh reinstall then run the system for a bit to see if it freezes up.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro Stuck on White Screen and Won't Shut Down

    Greetings,
I just received a 15 inch Macbook Pro with a 2.2 i7 processor earlier today. On my previous computer, a 2009 MB P with a Core2Duo, I've had a shutdown issue on it for the past week or so: when I click the power button, and confirm the shutdown, the computer would start shutting down as normal, however once it reached the white screen with the spinning loading symbol at the bottom, it just got stuck on that. As I've transfered my old data to my brand new computer, I'm still having the same issue with it. I was wondering if this was due to a worm, or some software incompliancy? If anyone could shed any light, I'd be greatful.
    Thanks.

Were you using any of them when the issue occurred (or just prior to it)?
Have you looked for updates on all of them?
If you want to do some digging, open Console and look at the logs at, and just prior to, the time of the issue.

  • Satellite Pro L630 need very long to boot up

Takes forever to boot up, cleared start up menu, no change,
Seem to coincide with display monitor addition. Using Toshiba Dynadock

It would be really interesting to know if the same happen without Dynadock.
Do you use original Toshiba preinstalled operating system?
Which antivirus application do you use?
After OS start maybe preinstalled antivirus application search for updates. Microsoft updates can also be active in he background. This can slow down preinstalled OS and maybe several minutes you cannot start to use preinstalled applications.

  • Macbook Pro suddenly turned off when fully charged and won't restart. Charger not working either coincidently

My 2 year old 13" MacbookPro suddenly turned off, presumably when the screen automatically dimmed (or went to sleep?) and now it won't turn back on. It was at 96% charge and now when I use the battery checker on the side, nothing shows up. No lights or anything. The charger doesn't seem to work either even after trying it on different outlets. This has never happened before but it has been harder to wake it from sleep in the last 6 months or so. I would have to push the On/Off button for a sec and the screen would turn back on. Also when I turn it on, the password screen is sometimes off-centered..weird.
I'm using Yosemite, the latest version..not sure what it is and can't check right now...I had to go use a PC to ask this question >_<

    Try a SMC reset:

    help?

  • Hi i have been problems on start up it will shut down after 1 second through the apple logo and spinning wheel yet once my Mac Pro 2008 starts up fully it works fine till i shut down then it all starts over

    I copied this

May 12 20:59:07 localhost com.apple.kextd[10]: Can't create kext cache under / - owner not root.
    May 12 20:59:08 localhost bootlog[39]: BOOT_TIME: 1336852733 0

there is more but does this give anyone an idea
    Regards Jim

Linc has suggested you use Disk Utility "Repair Permissions". This is one of the few obscure cases where "Repair Permissions" should be exactly the right solution.
For almost every other routine problem, the Disk Utility function "Repair Disk" is the right choice, and "Repair Permissions" is just a distraction.

  • Grey bar shows up when booting and then iMac shuts down

    Hello,
when I turned on my iMac (early 2010, Mountain Lion) today, strangely, after the apple logo, it showed up a login page (It never showed up before). I choosed my user and password and it came back to the same screen.
Then I rebooted my Mac a grey bar showed up in the apple logo screen and it took about 30 min for it to reach the end. When the bar was at the end the mac shut off.
I can go to my windows partition without any problem but i noticed the mac hd is now named "EPI Boot".
I tried to install a fresh copy of the osx but the hard drive is locked.
In the disk utility menu, the Macintosh HD is greyed out and if I try to mount it it gives an error saying I need to repair it first, but if I try to repair it, another error shows up saying the disk utility cannot repair this disk.
I tried to boot up pressing CMD-V to see what is going on and this shows up:
It does this 3 times and then says it cannot repair the disk and shuts off.
    Thank you for your time.

Ok, I booted the mac using Disk Warrior, the MacHD wasn't showing up but after waiting a while it showed up. I repaired the disk using the software and now it's working

  • A late 2007 Mac Pro (2,1) no longer boots into 64-bit Snow Leopard

In Snow Leopard 10.6.7, my late 2007 Mac Pro (2,1/3.0 GHz/Dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon) no longer seems to be booting into 64-bit mode. I've tried holding down the 6 and 4 keys during startup and even used a Terminal sudo command to force the machine to always boot into 64-bit mode. No matter what I try, an About This Mac>More Info>Software check only reports the following:
         64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No
Before I upgraded  from Leopard 10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6, I carefully researched this, and this Mac Pro model specifically was listed by Apple as being capable of 64-bit booting — meaning that it would utilize at least some extra memory. At the time, under OS 10.5 and early versions of 10.6, when I used this Terminal command...
         ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
...my Mac Pro 2,1 returned this response:
         "firmware-abi" = <"EFI64">
As a result of my tests and research, I upgraded the installed SDRAM from 4MB to the theoretical maximum Apple indicated this model could support (16MB) so that Adobe Photoshop 12 (CS 5) would fully utilize extra installed memory under Snow Leopard. While using the first versions of 10.6 Snow Leopard, the machine worked fine in 64-bit mode. Now, in the wake of the 10.6.6 or the 10.6.7 update (I didn't notice which), I find that this model no longer even reports itself as being 64-bit capable, though it once did.
Now, the aforementioned Terminal query returns this response:
          "firmware-abi" = <"EFI32">
Also, the Library>Preferences folder does even not contain a file called "com.apple.boot.plist," which some owners have reported editing to force 64-bit booting.
The thing is, I spent a fair amount of money upgrading this machine to the maximum amount of SDRAM supported. I purchased it because it was advertised as being 64-bit capable and I upgraded it because Apple originally reported it as being a 64-bit model. Now, I'm not sure if the extra memory I added is being fully utilized, though Photoshop does report seeing 15547MB of available memory.
Have any other owners of these second-generation Intel Mac Pro's encountered this? Does anyone know what's going on? Am I doing something wrong when checking for the 64-bit installation or architecture? Is Snow Leopard 10.6.7 mis-reporting the architecture for this model? Or did Apple silently withdraw 64-bit support for this machine in a recent OS update?

Hatter: Thanks for the feedback and links. Well, as described in one of the threads you linked to, the document below reinforces your assertion that only Mac Pro's 3,1 or later (early 2008) support 64-bit booting in Snow Leopard:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
However, if you asked me in court, I would swear on a stack of Bibles that sometime in the past, I read an Apple document indicating that the Mac Pro 2,1 supported 64-bit booting and I really thought I recalled booting this particular machine into 64-bit mode under early versions of Snow Leopard.
I guess I'm mistaken. Certainly, this issue can be confusing. When I read them out loud to myself, even perfectly-written, accurate explanations on the subject can sound like a circular, non-sensical George Bush rationalization being delivered by comic Will Ferrell. I must not be correctly recalling the details of booting into 64-bit mode with this machine. And I guess that since Photoshop has its own memory management scheme, and I only have 16 gigabytes of SDRAM installed anyway, it doesn't matter that much. Furthermore, in one of your links, Jason Snell of Macworld writes:
"...If you’re running a Mac powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or an Intel Xeon processor, your Mac is 64-bit capable. And Snow Leopard runs 64-bit-capable applications in 64-bit mode regardless of whether it’s booting into a 64-bit or 32-bit kernel. In fact, the only big advantage of booting into a 64-bit kernel would be the ability to use more than 32 gigabytes of RAM..."

  • Why does Preview takes so long to boot up?

My Preview appliation on Lion takes very long to boot up.  Also, why does the program quit once I close it?  I have to start the program up each time I want to view a PDF.  Acts like windows!!

The first thing to do is startup up in Safe Mode and see if the machine behaves acceptably.  There is a second knowldege base article that may help give further guidance.
