Mac Pro with Server 10.8.5 Randomly Shuts Down
OK all you really smart dudes ...
I have a Mac Pro (2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) with 24GB RAM. We are running Mountain Lion Server (10.8.5) without problems until the last two weeks. "Out of the blue" in the middle of the day, it just turns off. We check on it and it is completely off and we have to restart it. Today it happened for the 3rd time ...
I pulled the System Log from the Server App (like I would know what I was looking for) and saw some suspicious activity:

Can anyone determine why it is shutting down and what I need to do about it? I have ALL the System Log for the day, if that would be helpful.
Thanks.
Make sure there are no scheduled shutdown events in the Energy Saver preference pane. If there are not, then see below.

My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery. Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears. It sometimes happens over and over until I leave it alone for a while (still not charging), and then it works.
I think you might get a new phone instead of repairing it as it takes time and you said the repairing center is far from your living place

Mac pro 3,1 and ati hd5870 overheating (shut down issues)
Hi all I have an early 2008 mac pro 16gig ram and the ati hd 5870 on dual boot windows 7 64bit, it has been running brill for about a year but then I started getting random shut downs in windows and the occasional one in macOS 10.7 I upgrade to 10.8 loved some of the new features but the shuts down became unbareable in both OS I would also just get black screen on startup and have to do forced reboots etc.
If I took out the hd5870 and put back inthe original ati card everything worked as normal except the orginal card isnt supported in fcpX and I need this for my work when I take out the hd5870 card it is boiling hot so I have done some research and it appears I am not the only one with over heating issues.
I have seen there are several third party graphic card cooling options but mac being mac I dont seem to have any free additional power outputs to power a third party cooling device, so my question is this
1, is anyone selse having these issues and has figured out a way to stop the shut downs
2. has anyone or does anyone know how i can keep my card cool?
inside my mac is squeaky clean and so is the graphics card.
ps, typical it is just outside the 1 year warranty and the card is so expensive i didn;'t want to buy 1 every single year@ Hatter
Yup prior card was 8800gt and new card is nice and snug. 10.8 was not clean install, was upgrade. Ill try safeboot although not sure how/why that will fix any long term issues i have (which are random).. Trying 10.7 i had the same issues and was hoping that 10.8 wld fix.. Why go back to 10.6.8 when it should work in todays day and age? :(
@ Grant
Have done that now although not sure why something like this is not in the owners manual?!
Thanks for the help/suggestions so far guys, much apprec.. Feels like my pro is dying on me slowly but surely...
Any other bright ideas? -
Is there a fix for MAC Pro with Dual video cards that randomly logs off and on?
From my readings on the Internet this seems to be a know problem. That even furthers my frustrations with the latest OS X upgrades. So far on both my MACBOOK PRO and my MAC PRO it has been a major downgrade as both systems are no longer stable. Enough with my complaints...
Is there any plan to address this problem with the MAC PRO? I can't believe 10.8.1 didn't fix it. More can be read on it at:
http://jvm-technology.blogspot.com/2012/08/mac-pro-users-experiencing-random-log .html
Does anyone have work around to use dual screen monitors with the system? I have two video cards, the article says to remove one. Has this worked for anyone? Can I use dual screens with the one video card. Before I go messing around with these type of things I just want to be sure that this is a real fix. For the price of the cards and the system I really can't believe apple has this issue in the first place and has not fixed it.Self-hosted add-ons have to be fixed for every new version of Firefox. Two to 6 months for updating an add-on is ridiculous for a program which has a new version release every '''6 weeks'''. If that extension was hosted at the official Add-ons website, Mozilla would take take care of "bumping" that extension, as long as it keeps working, for every new version of Firefox, as the new version is released.
See this thread from yesterday, I posted instructions about how to "bump" that extension for Firefox 7.<br />
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/884484
You can also use this extension to "bump" an already installed extension for compatibility with the currently installed version of Firefox. <br />

My MacBook pro is slow and keeps on randomly shutting down.
I got it in 2011 and its updated. I recently have been using my computer a lot for work and school and as soon as I go on certain apps and sites (ex. Mail, Word, Gmail, Preveiw, ect.) it gets extremly slow and the circle loading sign comes up for a long time. Then it blacks; it doesnt shut down or sleep, but the screen just goes blank. I don't know if it has anything to do with my batery, or some sort of MAC virus, but its driving me crazy. I am not sure what to do.. any ideas?
I also live in a dorm for college and the internet is shared, my computer always works worse when i am using a internet connection there; could that be a factor?Back up your documents and everything else important to you. The symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
If you suspect the hard disk may be failing, try repairing it with Disk Utility:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
Depending on the particular error, it may recur even if Disk Utility reports that it has been repaired. If it does you should consider the disk unreliable, and make plans replace it.
When Disk Utility finishes, restart your Mac and test again for operation.
If problems continues to occur please determine if they also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, some networking functions are disabled, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
Reply with the results of the above. -
My Mac Pro 2006 keeps hanging and won't shut down
My Mac keeps hanging the circle keeps going round and round the have to manually shut down. Now sometimes on start up it gets to my opening screen and the circle keeps going round and round I have to shut it down manually I can't even force quit.
Thank youIt is usually called the Spinning Beach Ball Of Death. It means that an application is not responding. You can either - Click and hold on the application's icon in the dock and a menu will pop up with the option to Force Quit. Select that and the application should quit; if not try selecting it again and it will often quit the second time or -Hold down the three keys Command (cmd), Option (alt) and Escape (esc) together. This will show a Force Quit menu window. Select the offending application from the list of running applications and click the Force Quit button. Click on the Red close window button to dismiss the window. Other than that you may see the SBBOD if the Mac is running slow for some reason - loading a large video or something like that - but it should clear once it has caught up with itself. Another option to try is a good Disk Utility for the Mac. If you optimize your hard drive, it should help speed up your Mac and stop the rainbow beach ball from re-appearing. Or just try another mouse. Mouse could be broke or mouse drivers are outdated.

I've had this problem for a while and I thought it went away. I've looked at all of the other discussions and tried what they suggest, nothing. I preferably don't want to erase everything on here. Is there a way to fix it without having to do that? I also noticed that other people have the screen when they first boot their computer. Mine are in the middle of a college essay or browsing online. I would really like to fix this issue. I haven't even had my iMac for a year yet. Any suggestions?
Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -

How do I get Mac Pro with Lion Server to restart at a set time when users are connected?
I have recently configured a Mac Pro with Lion Server, and have set it to restart automatically every morning at 3am. When I arrive in the morning, I notice that it has not rebooted, usually because it states there are users connected. Is there a way to automatically disconnect users so that the machine will reboot. No one is ACTIVELY connected at this time of the morning, but may still be logged in somewhere. I did see where I can log out users after a set period of time when using Workgroup Manager to manage a computer or computer group, but I don't use the server to manage all of the computers that have users log in.
Thanks!Well, it doesn't necessarily have to be each and every night, but it was for the sole purpose of preventing sluggishness. We had it set up before, as Snow Leopard Server and it would restart every night. It would occasionally be slow and need rebooting, however a manual reboot was not possible by most people in the store as they did not have credentials to screen share and restart it - which would result in holding down the power button to shut it down.
The server is used for the sole purpose of logging in about 50 users just so they can customize their experience, as well as saving items to their own home folders. The store is closed during the night, and there is no reason anyone would be accessing it during the night. -
Dell PowerVault MD1000 with Mac OS X Server 10.5 (mac pro with fiber connec
Hey Guys. Its time that i add a bulk amount of storage to our mac network.
Currently Our network consists of one mac server which is a Mac Pro with Mac OSX Server 10.5 installed on it with 4 x 750GB Hard Drives with a couple of client machines. I now need to add atleast another 6TB to the network. This needs to be seen as the server as one drive so that 6TB needs to be raid prosume (raid 5)
Now in the Mac Pro server we have a Fibre Card that we dont currently use with 2 slots. My Plan is to buy a Dell PowerVault™ MD1000 (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...ulmd1000sata) and put in the amount of hard drives i require into the Dell Storage.
Would this work. If i bought the Dell PowerVault™ MD1000, would i beable to hook this upto the mac server and use it as a storage drive? Although i do no networking. Im still very new to this.
Ideally im looking for something similar to an Xserve Raid, but with out the Apple price tag on the outside if you guys no what i mean.
Best,
NathanielYou would at least need a SAS/SATA controller - preferably a hardware RAID one, much like the one bundled with this unit - but it also needs to be OS X compatible.
I would look for something that is known to work, not something you "cobble" together.
The FibreChannel card does you no good if you haven't got a device with FC ports. -
Itunes library sharing on single Mac Pro with 2 users.
Recently I have setup a Mac Pro with 2 users. Primarily the thought was to have this as the media server for a couple of AppleTV (2nd generation) and other users. The primary user on the Mac Pro (me), has the iTunes Library located in the Public Directory. Home sharing is enabled, on all systems. There is no problem when the Primary user is logged in and iTunes is running. When the second user, logs into the Mac Pro, nobody has access to the iTunes Library of the primary user.
I was thinking of setting up the secondary user with the same itunes directory, but when new content is added by the primary user, the secondary user would not see it automatically, would they?
Basically I am trying to set up a common iTunes library for all users and all devices. Is it possiblemichaelfromsherwood park wrote:

while logged in to the other user account, launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder in the shared folder.
if you're using fast user switching, user A must quit iTunes before user B can access the library.
Home sharing is enabled, on all systems.
home sharing is designed to work between two (or more) computers on the the same LAN. -
Mac Pro with 10.5.8 not booting
Hi everyone My Mac Pro with 10.5.8 is not booting suddenly, it stays on gray screen with the spinning watch. Actually i was trying to edit the hosts file to patch one application in that process i deleted three file from \private\etc\ folder the files are hostconfig, hosts, hosts.equiv, after this my mac pro is not booting. I am still runing MAC OSX 10.7 lion from the other partition without any problem. But i want osx 10.5.8 to be fixed as i have lots of applications installed in it. Is there any way that i can REPALCE THESE FILES BACK ( BEFORE DELETING THOSE FILES I HAD TAKEN A COPY ASUMMING SOME PROBLEM) OR Can i reinstall same OSX 10.5.8 in it preserving all the settings as it is. I tried Safe Mode, Single user mode for no luck. i tried to get the errors during bootup by pressing Command-V the error shows are 1. bootup lookup server failed, 2. mdsync launch failed (ipc/send) invaild destination port, etc, etc, etc, etc
Can Anyone Hep Me Please
AddinsRestart into Mac OS X 10.7, open the root level of the Mac OS X 10.5 partition, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide private/etc/ as the path, and drag the backup copies of those files into that folder. If needed, the default permissions for them are system with read and write access, wheel with read only access, and everyone with read only access.

Best Router for both a Mac Pro with Leopard and a Dell
I have posted this question in another forum, but maybe this discussion page is the better one for my question, especially in light of all the connectivity problems I'm reading about for people who have upgraded to Leopard -
Can anyone suggest a good router to purchase that would work with no problems for a Mac Pro with Leopard?
Or, the other side of the coin - what routers have you personally had problems with?
I would be connecting to the router via an ethernet cable, but I'm looking specifically for a g and b router. I need to cover my roommate too - she has a Dell and she uses a wireless usb adapter to connect wirelessly. We have a modem (cable or DSL, I think?) and high-speed internet service.
We were previously using a Netgear router, but suddenly it won't work for more than 10-15 min before it loses connection after we reset it. And this happened before I updated to the Leopard.Apple AirPort Extreme has served my mixed environment very well. You can buy a refurbished one from Apple and save some $.

Mac Pro with updated OSX 10.8.2 freezes no matter what.
After installing OS X 10.8.2 my Mac Pro with 32 Gb Ram freezes within 30 minutes invariably. Tried disconnecting all of the peripherals, unloaded Parallels 8, did a clean reload, quit all applications, nothing seems to make a difference. Would appreciate any additional ideas.
I'm having the same issue. Here's my log file. I hope you can determine from this, Thanks in advance if you can help out.

Mac Pro with Western Digital VelociRaptor 600G ?
Hello people,
Has anyone tried upgrading the HDDs in the Mac Pros with the new drive from WD
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=821
From what i see, as the last model, this will probably not fit natively due to a lower pin arrangement that will not match the Mac Pro SATA slots with the factory HDD sleds. Am i wrong?
If you have this drive how does it compare?
ThanksHi-
That drive of this following model is plug and play in the MP:

A pair of them in a striped RAID are as fast as the fastest SSD.
October 5th, 2010 -- For less that the price of one 256G SSD, you can buy two 10K 600G Velociraptor HDDs. If you stripe them (RAID 0), you get the same sustained transfer speed as the SSD. But, alas, the SSD can process 14 times as many small random transfer requests per second. Then again, considering you are getting 5 times the storage of the SSD and 3 times the transactions per second of the fastest 7K HDD, it's is an interesting option for a boot volume.
