Mac slow activity monitor wired
HI,
My mac has been slowing down. I have tried to goole how to trouble shoot and was directed to the "activity monitor"..
I noted that my "wired" under system memory is 690 mb....
I have 1 program running firefox
My disk activity is constantly high red on the graph
I have 100gb fre on my HD of 499.25 gb
My CPU activity looks like a bright xmas treem with 4 bars all full of bright colors
That looks pretty normal to me, except for the high Page out and Swap use which indicates that you need more RAM for your usage.
See > OWC Certified RAM for Apple iMac with Lifetime Warranty
Currently I'm running OS X, a few Utilities, Safari, iTunes which never quits and I'm using a little more RAM than you are.
Also note: that with 8GB of RAM, I have no Page outs or Swap used and my Mac has not been restarted for almost 3 weeks.

My MacBook Pro is slow, activity monitor says crash report using CPU
Hi, my MacBook Pro is running very slow. My activity monitor says high CPU usage by crash report. When i look at the system log MediaTek.winmax appears repeatedly with the word bug close by. I am not so good with computers (got this far by searching the Internet) and I am unsure what to do now. I've tried searching for it on the computer but cannot find it. Any help (in simple terms please) gratefully received, thanks!

Slow Mavericks and Activity Monitor Uselessness
The recent Mavericks update may have improved performance to some degree, but I'm still experiencing unusual slowness of apps often. One of the most irritating things is that the one app I except to help me shed light on the cause of the slowness, Activity Monitor, typically shows NO unusual heavy system load when I observe apps being slow.
For example, I click on + in Safari to create a new tab. I expect immediate response, an immediate new tab being open. Instead, it takes maybe 5 seconds, perhaps even 10 seconds. So, I immediately switch to the Activity Monitor window to see if I can identify what might have caused the slowness. I think that maybe the CPU become extremely overloaded during that brief period. But I see nothing in Activity Monitor to clue me in as to what the problem was.
To me, this means Activity Monitor is not monitoring relevant activities. I don't know why Safari is slow opening at tab, but whatever it is doing should be an activity that Activity Monitor monitors, since it obviously is something that takes the machine a lot of time to do.
Could a knowledgeable person in Apple's software department respond here and say something about why opening a new tab in Safari takes so long?
tedPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
My mac mini is running slow. Bought it in 2009. Activity monitor shows nothing running that should not be. Someone suggested it might be my operating system? Check for software updates, and I am current. Suggestions?
Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive in Disk Utilty by highlighting the Drive & looking at the bottom of the window. -
So I am really unsure where to start but I def need a little help getting to where I want to be or feel I should be. I understand that I am pretty much filled when it comes to the RAM on this machine but I need to figure out how to lower it. I back up my machine about once a week which is longer than I would prefer but due to the way Mavericks has been acting I cant deal with the long backup process.... WHY?!?? may be your response to that and I will fill you in. My external Hard Drive is a 1tb Lacie and its about 2 years old. In that time I have dropped, lost, threw and slept ontop of it. Causeing minor damage (each time) to the casing. So now becomes rather hot and I kinda dont want it to burn out. When I first updated to Mavericks the backups were fast and went along mb by mb...now though, the updates drag out for 3-5 hours and update kb by kb. Tried some of the "solutions" posted on here but none seem to work any more than me consistantly purging my system while the backup happens...kinda why I dont have time to do it everyday like I'd like.
ANYWAY can someone please fill me in on a way, program, application, anything that will help me lower my RAM? Because in the spirit of honesty I just dont have the extra funds to snag some new RAM or another HD. I am almost at the point of saying "F**K IT" and wiping everything off the computer so its as close to empty as can be and manually, one by one redownloading what I want/need. But I dont have the time to accomplish that either. PLEASE lend me your ear and help a brudda out with some information from that exceptional brain of yours.
Below is a copy of my machines "report" from EtreCHECK and I am including screen shots of what the (Mavericks) Activity Monitor currently looks like in ALL PROCESSES. PLUS it kinda seems that I have WAY TOOO MANY processes going on in the ACTIVITY MONITOR and have NO clue how to lower the amount. Will truly appreciate any help anyone can toss my way.
THANK YOU

MacPro Quad Core 32g Ram running slow Logic using only 9g in Activity Monitor
Well its taken a while, but this is my first foray into the world of forums! I'm so hacked off with this regular problem and havent been able to find anything anywhere to solve it i thought i'd see if anyone has any similiar issues and maybe even a solve to it.
So.... im an orchestrator and producer and after my mid 2008 Macbook Pro with 8g ram started freezing up i invested in this 3 years ago -
Mac Pro 2x 2.4ghz Quad Core intel Xeon and stuck in 32gb of lovely Crucial RAM and 3 seperate internal 1TB drives with one for operating system (10.6.8), one for Audio recording/saving and one for all my sample libraries.
32gb ram - should be enough i thought!
So i regularly run at least 30 VI's - Ni The giant, Spitfire Orchestral librabies (say 12 string instruments up to 0.69g per load) LASS strings, plus perc STYLUS, ABBEY road drums, Trillian basses (acoustic/electric), ominisphere etc etc. So pretty hefty sample instruments. But theyre sooo nice!!
In addition, the 32 bit server will come alive (NOT! So unstable i find) with my Waves plugs etc.
Looking at ACTIVITY MONITOR however i might be not touching 9 gig (and sometimes even less) of usage for Logic, and only say 800MB for 32 bit server and have NOTHING else open - and what do i find .....
- Mouse lag and cant really do anything with the mouse whilst playing the track - cant adjust volume - too slow, zooming problems
- Takes a good 2-3 seconds for track to stop playing
Dont get System OVERLOADS so much, its just that the system goes REALLLLLY slow.
What ive tried- - -
- Running Mountain Lion off another drive (havent had time to install it and wanted to be sure everything worked etc)
- Tried all audio prefs - large/small buffers/threads etc and yes i am on 1024.
in a nutshell how come with 32g RAM everything is so slow when barely using 10g of that???????
I dread getting to the end of a project cos i know im gonna be freezing so much, but with so much editing all the time for the orchestral parts i need everything unfrozen and working.
Sorry if this is long winded but wanted to describe what im experiencing.
Any feedback most welcome! Thankyou in advance.

Logic Pro 9.1.8Hi
A few thoughts:

The 32bit server is a pita: Waves v9 are 64bit compatible (they run fine). 32 bit VI's can be run outside Logic using Vienna Ensemble Pro (see later)

Some of these VI's are extremely CPU hungry: Abbey Rd drums for example, really do hammer the CPU. What does Logic's Performance meter show in the way of CPU load. What does Activity Monitor show regarding CPU load?
With 32G of RAM, this should not be the issue, but you might have general CPU problems (see above), and you may also have Sample disk streaming limitations if all the Loibraries you mention are on the same drive. How does Activity Monitor look regarding disk access? You might find it helpful to add a second drive and split the sample libraries across 2 for faster disk access.
I presume that you have plenty of free space on the System drive?
Logic can get sluggish if the Undo info gets way too big, and also if there are loads of regions in the Arrange: check Options:Project Information.
Many are finding some benefits (me included) by running the VI's in Vienna Ensemble Pro:
Better CPU load distribution than directly in Logic
"Persistant Samples": they can remain loaded whilst you switch Logic Projects
Logic is effectively running much less itself, so generally flies.
32bit Plugs hosted separately in VEP so no 32bit Bridge issues in Logic
Something to consider, though perhaps not yet, would be setting up a Slave computer using VEP.

SLOW Imac and Activity Monitor won't work
My imac has slowed down and Safari keeps crashing and everything is slow. I tried to look in Activity monitor but when I try to get in it tells my that 'Activity monitor doesn't have to correct file permissions' and to fix it with Disk Utility, so I tried that but nothing. I have a 232 gb hard drive with 97 gb free. HELP, I am not very smart with computers so laments terms etc wud be great. thanks

Weird Slow Perf. - Activity Monitor - Dock Problem
I have a Powerbook G4 that's been running insanely slow. I went through the troubleshooting steps to fix this, and opened the Activity Monitor to see what's been sucking up all the processing power on the CPU. To my surprise, the Dock application is using 60 to 80% of my CPU at any given time. I know Mac doesn't get viruses, but... is this a virus?
Not in my experience. However, if the Dock is showing a lot of activity, then I suspect that you're running widgets. Click on the Dashboard icon and turn them off (easiest way is to open the Activity Monitor, select the Dock, and quit it).

Activity Monitor/RAM/Slowness
I updated to Mavericks the day of the update, and I switched to Safari (from Firefox) immediately too (Safari now my default and Firefox having various other tabs open simultaneously).
For the first time ever, my Mac (2011 iMac) gets really slow - hangs, spinning wheel, unresponsiveness. This is often having one of the browsers open too long, with Safari in particular being a massive memory hog, and restarting them fixes it. But poking around activity monitor I've seen some peculiarities.
For instance, my used memory keeps going up, with nothing happening. This morning the computer was using 11.99gb of my 12gb memory, with swap increasing too. So I rebooted, telling it to NOT reopen windows on bootup. With nothing running, ram usage was 3gb, then 4gb, climbing continuously and it's now over 5 with just Firefox running to type this request. App memory is 1.75 and file cache 2.35, which from looking at other threads seem to be pretty high - this is less than 5 minutes after a total restart by the way.
Prior to rebooting I had a few 'not responding' items in AM, soagent and QTKit web content for Safari, no idea if they have any impact on the slowing down (their memory usage was tiny and the computer generally ran fine with them flagged red) but the reboot has got rid of them.
Here's a screenshot of AM taken as soon as the computer restarted, with Firefox the only open program.I'm afraid Steve is right, your memory is fine.
The symptoms you describe are not memory related (at least that isn't shown in those screenshots).
Here is a great article that shows how the 10.9 memory system has been changed…
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/17/#compressed-memory
See the 2 graphs, only the second one is showing signs that are bad - the thin red edge is indicating the increase in 'Swap used'.
You can witness this for yourself via a built in Apple commands…
Reboot to see the system in it's default state.
Open Activity Monitor & Terminal from /Applications/Utilities.
Select the Memory tab in Activity Monitor
In Terminal enter the following command
memory_pressure -l critical
# note that is a lowercase L
RAM usage will climb, compression will begin the VM will become way more than the system has installed.
Eventually the system will start swapping (look for RED) - Watch the 'memory pressure' & 'Swap used' as this happens.
In Terminal & hit ctrl+c to stop the process.
Watch the VM & memory pressure return to normal levels.
I'm afraid you will need to look at what is using CPU or disk IO (or both) to see what is causing your issues.
Also don't forget to test in Safe mode (hold shift after the chime until the spinning 'cog' appears). Ensure the login window says 'safe mode'.
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
It will disable all third party extensions & startup items.
If the Mac is better in safe mode it is time to get a system report and look at the third party items. Be aware that some features will be disabled like wifi on some models, graphics drivers will be in a reduced mode - this is normal in safe mode.
Reboot to go back to normal.
Use EtreCheck to see what is running in a normal boot & post it here if you want to look at the running software.

photoshop bridge on my 3 year old mac pro has become inoperable. In activity monitor is is using 180+ percent of CPU. I also get switchboard not operating. I deleted all of photoshop and bridge and reloaded them. Same problem. Does anyone know a solution. Setting up a new user account has been suggested.
Thank youHi @Tom,
Thanks for your response. "Camera Uploads" is a folder in which Dropbox deposits all my photos and movie clips from my cameras. It is a rather enormous folder likely exceeding several gigs of media.
The file path is
/Users/bpg/Dropbox/Camera Uploads/
I really don't know the difference between "media" and "events". I consider media a group or bunch of photos and movie clips. I consider "events" a specific bucket or container of photos and movie clips. If I should know more, a reference to documentation or an explanation of the difference would receive "This helped me." If you could explain how to get FCPX working again (it just won't do anything beyond the splash screen), I will provide "This solved my question."
Thanks for your help! -
Mail slows to a trickle and then freezes - Activity Monitor shows all OK
I've been having this issue recently where I will be typing an email and I notice I begin to outpace Mail's ability to display the letters I am typing until finally it stops altogether.
At this point Mail becomes almost completely unresponsive. I can still click on the email modal window in question and move it around, but I can't access the Mail main window or click buttons and the menu bar doesn't come up.
The weird thing is that Activity Monitor appears to think that everything is kosher. No CPU spikes, no memory issues, no excessive writing, and no network log jams. So it actually never displays the message "Application Unresponsive" as one would normally expect from an unresponsive app.
The console messages that appear at this time are:

I thought F4M was Flip 4 Mac, but I have no idea why that would be tied to a Mail process.
Any thoughts or ideas would be welcome on troubleshooting this!
Thanks in advance,
RichardHello Richard:
I have never experienced what you describe so I am fishing a bit.
Try rebuilding the mailbox(s).
If that does not help, trash the preference file (com.apple.mail.plist) and restart.
One other thought - I have read that Mail will have strange behavior if the mailboxes are too full. However, I have no clue how +"too full"+ is defined.
Barry -
I don't think this should be happening, but I haven't been able to find any reference to such a situation in Apple Support or on Forums.
I'm trying to do this. I unchecked Contacts, restarted my Mac and lo and behold, Contacts was rechecked! I unchecked it and checked Activity Monitor. By the time I returned to System Preferences, Contacts was rechecked. This happened 3 times. Now it has remained rechecked, AddressBookSourceSync is consuming over 90% of a CPU (mostly over 95%). I'm letting it go for about half an hour. I'm debating whether to let it go and see if it settles down (no evidence that it will). CPU time is over 30 minutes now. I think I'm going to quit (or Force Quit) AddressBookSourceSync, follow the suggested steps and see what happens.

System running very slow - then Activity Monitor crashes
I've this crash dump from Activity Monitor:
Date/Time: 2010-01-30 21:29:07.939 +0200
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.2 (10C540)
Report Version: 6
Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x000000011b909000
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
Then exactly the same thing at another time, but with a different address:
Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x000000011d391c00
So it doesn't look like a memory fault. After a re-boot it's working OK, but clearly something is wrong. Any suggestions?Repair the disk permissions from Disk Utillty in the Utillities folder. See if this helps.

acYou may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. In addition to the files listed in the support article, you may also have to remove the following in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.download.plist
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.ltvbit.plist
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.update.plist
~/Library/Application Support/IM.Installer/Completer.app
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
If you find Apple's instructions too hard to follow, ask for an alternative that doesn't require you to trust a black-box application without knowing what it does.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.
