Mac Speed and FCP Performance

Good afternoon.
I was experimenting with the very cool multiclips ability of FCP5 but found it doesn't work so well. I followed all settings advice from the manual, but still can't really get the multiclips to play in the viewer. If they do they are way out of syn with the timeline. I suspect this is because my computer and external drive just aren't fast enough.
How fast is 'fast enough'? How much RAM should I have to expect such operations, and how fast does my external drive have to be?
Right now I'm running my Powerbook with an OWC 300GB at 7200 rpm. My video card is...well, I'm not sure. Should this be enough speed?
Cheers

When you start using multiclip you start getting into what is called multiple "streams of video"...meaning how many video tracks are playing at the same time. A firewire drive can play back maybe 2 or 3 streams, but then might start to choke. You need either a firewire RAID like a G-Raid or Firewire VR, or eSATA drive like the S2VR Dup (caldigit.com) or ones offered by sonnett and Dulce systems.

  • I don't have clean ideas about Mac Pro and FCP in RT

Hi, I hope you can clarify my ideas about editing in RT.
I will purchase a HDV camera and I'd like to work in RT with FCP and Mac Pro.
Many people tell me I don't need any additional card and even I don't need RAID. Can you tell me if I can work in RT with FCP, Mac Pro and 4GIGs RAM only?
    thanks

When I have to export the film from Timeline will I have to do rendering?
RT editing in FCP, for the most part simply means that there are certain things you can see happen in the timeline without rendering... a certain number of simultaneous streams or tracks, certain transitions/effects/titles etc.
How much you can do RT is determined by a number of factors... the speed/power of your computer and drives, the video format your cutting... you'll get less cutting HD than you will cutting HDV or DV25. With the type of timeline you're describing you shouldn't have any trouble seeing what you're cutting RT.
However, regardless of how much you see RT, any effects, transitions etc. have to be rendered in order to output or export. In other words, even with DV footage, unless you've got a straight cut timeline with no titles or effects, you're always looking at at least some render time to get things finished. And as David has said, HDV also requires conforming (the whole timeline, not just effects) which, depending on the length of your show can take some time.

  • Mac Pro and FCP - Very Unstable

I just purchased the Mac Pro and installed FCP 5.1.2. I have a dual 2.6 Ghz with 2.5 TB external eSATA Raid (using the Sonnet E4P card), Kona LHe Card and 3 GB of RAM.
    1. FCP, Quicktime and Shake each unexpectedly quits on playback of video within a few minutes of opening and
    2. Video in FCP and Quicktime has blocky (colored lego) defects and corruption.
I suspect this may be the RAID or Quicktime, but this is about the most unstable FCP setup I have ever experienced since FCP 1.0.
Any suggestions? is it my RAID controller card, Quicktime, FCP or something else?
    Thanks.

Just found this for Dan - http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/e4p/
Scroll down a bit - they recommend using it in an appropriate slot - something else to check ....
    oh sorry - that's for a G5

Have you installed the Serial ATA Firmware Updates/Drivers from Sonnet - specific for the MacPro?
Looks like they're all still in beta ...

  • Which monitor for mac pro and FCP

    Hi,
I'm using a quad core mac pro with a Dell 2407wfp. In this setup I mainly do FCP editing. The monitor is 4 years old and I like to replace it for a larger one. I recently saw a setup with a Samsung P2770HD full hd and a tv tuner on board. Will this be good enough for FCP editing and reviewing HD content?
    TIA

Will this be good enough for FCP editing and reviewing HD content?
Probably not - but I have no experience with that monitor.
Not what you asked but why not keep the Dell for displaying FCP timeline, bins, etc and purchase a quality HDTV and the means to feed it a hd signal (eg AJA Kona series, various Blackmagic cards, Matrox MXO series, etc) for viewing output?

  • Mac Pro and FCP Studio

    Hi,
Will the New Mac Pro ( 3 GHz) be faster than my Quad 2,5 for normal rendering in FCP Studio ?
    thanks

    Should be.
They suggest that it is up to 1.4x faster encoding Mpeg2 (from DV)

  • Cpi-files - problem to open in Mac osx and FCP. Need help

I have camera Sony Hdr-sr1 and i have problem becouse mac osx don't see films from my camera, it is PCI files. FCP don't see it either.
    Can i do something?

the SR1 shoots AVCHD in HD mode and MPEG2 in SD ... the AVCHD you can import (and transcode) via Log and Transfer with FCP 6.0.1 or later, the MPEG2 you need to transcode yourself prior to import (you can use the free MOEG Streamclip app to do this: choose Export to Quicktime and set the Compressor to DV/DVCPRO - NTSC)

  • New Mac Update and FCP 7?

I'm always hesitant to do a Mac OS X update because of how it might affect FCP. I haven't done the 10.7.3 or 10.7.4 one yet because I am in the middle of projects and don't want to disrupt the workflow.
Anyone had any issues after doing the update? Thanks!

When you've got a stable os and app combo, clone your startup drive.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2494
You can than update without worry.
If you've got a macpro, clone to a second internal drive and if things go south, you're back up and running in a minute or two.

  • Mac Pro and FCP/Motion Crashing

    Hi,
My new Mac Pro is fast BUT crashes a lot. It crashed during a render and also in complicated motion projects. I am wondering if I should upgrade my RAM or add another graphics card to fix this -- I cannot do both at this time. My old computer never crashed (G4). I finally went to one monitor and that help a bit but I still had crashes. I have 2 GB of RAM and RadeonX1900 graphic card.
It works just fine on all other programs.
Mac Pro 2 x 3 Ghz Duel Core Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GB RAM

    What format are you editing?
    4x3 NSTC
How many drives in the machine and how much free space on each one?
One internal drive 108 GB left. One external G-raid 12 GB left.
    Where is the media stored?
Scratch disks on on the G-raid hard drive and render files etc are on internal drive, still photos and motion files on main drive.
Is the RAM from Apple and is it all the same size (i.e. all 512mb modules)?
All the RAM came from Apple and Apple installed it. It is all 512 MB
    Any 3rd party filters applied?
Yes, a few of the clips have Nattress filters. I have the 24P turned off. This takes a long time to render on the old machine too.
Does it crash on a particular project or using a particular effect?
Motion crashes the most with projects that have many layers and using the particle generator. This motion project my old G4 could never handle.
Does it crash at the same place on a timeline or randomly? Randomly.
Have you deleted your FCP preferences using FCP Attic or Rescue?
I can do this but does not solve my motion crashes.
so on and so forth ...
again, it did seem to help when I went to one monitor. I am using 2 View Sonic 19 inch monitors.
I am still under my 30 Apple help and I am worried if others have the same set-up and no crashes.

  • Link Aggreagation, Speed and poor performance

    I have two new servers:
Win2012 4 NICs using standard NIC teaming and The WIn2012 is a dual Quad XEON, 32 GB of RAM  with nothing installed besides the O.S., Dell R720XD
    and
Win2008R2 - 4 NICs using Broadcom NIC Teaming and The WIn2008 R2 is a Quad XEON 16 GB of RAM, with nothing installed besides the O.S., Dell R710
When i test the speed, the traffic flows at no more than 250 Mb/s, at any circusntance. Tested with NTTCP tool and Windows explorer copying 300GB of files manually.
    NTttcpR.exe -m 1,0,10.122.1.5          AND               NTttcpS.exe -m 1,0,10.122.1.5
But when i try to use a diff CPU, changing the command line parameters:
    NTttcpR.exe -m 1,1,10.122.1.5          AND               NTttcpS.exe -m 1,1,10.122.1.5
That way, i can achive more thant 850 Mb/s!!!!!!!!
    WHy is that?
I would like to test full 4 Gb/s speed if possible.
The first tests i´ve made in the past show me that it is impossible for a single threaded application to use more than 1 Gb/s NIC at the same time and to use the full 4 Gb/s of my 4 NICs, i´ll have to open multiple connections or multiple instances/threads
    of applications, it is true?
The real goal here, is to make 5 TB backups with Ca Arcseve as fastest as possible.

After some reasearch we did find:
    1) The LACP on Cisco Switch was correct and WIN2012 was using configured for "generic" teaming. After changing that, LAPC was enabled and  configured in Wi2012 and after some seconds, it was Up and running
    2) The LACP was not configured in Switch for the WIn2008 machine (in fact, they have 4 Switches non-stackable and not directly connected and in practice, there was a misconfiguration) . We did some changes, and i could configure at least 2 NICs in the same
Switch, re-configure LACP (Broadcom software was using at the time, the generic link aggregation), i´ve disable 2 NICs in WIn2008 and build the Team using 2 remaining NICs, re-configured as LACP and now the LACP was up and running.
After that, the NTTCP application could use 800-900 Mb/s throughput in CPU 0
I think the problem was solved and you point out what i was thinking about, the fact that when people say that will "aggregate" bandwidth, they talking abouut multiple connections and/or multiple sources, not single threaded applications (in my
    case Backup)
What i noticed too, is that the NTTCP tool show diferent results. When the first server is receiving and the other is sending, they show in the screen statistics about the transmission, but the vales presented are Always diferente form each other. Sometimes,
for example, the sending server shows 888 Mb/s but the receiving server shows 918 Mb/s, sometimes, the reverse, it´s a little "inconsistency" in the data results
The last thing is to learn how to use the NTTCP application to "force" to use all bandwidth available and wich parameters i can use, if i´ll need to configure multiple adresses or something else to prove that the link aggregation is really working

  • A2107A-F Improved Speed and overall performance

Last night I was able to make some major performance enhancements to the 2 tablets. Far any of you that are interested have a look here

If you have any further questions just ask
I've had a lot of devices through the years. With those years and devices comes a little bit of knowledge that may be of use here.

I followed your guide and was inpsired to do these COD tweaks on all my Android devices (Droid 3 and Droid x2) will they also work?
More importantly have you exp. any issues with HD play back? I havn't been able to fix this at all. Its really laggy on this device.
Do you have a safe list of things that we can freeze as well? There is a desktop app that you can freeze in Titanium which pretty much disables the home screen..i.e. dont freeze it. Im trying to get rid of most of this bloat ware.
    Thanks!

  • Last tiger and fcp: cannot export back to mini dv

we used to be able with old Mac Os and fcp to reexport to mini dv, wether on our jvc super vhs, or sony and panasoni cameras. we just are not able to do it now; anybody has a solution?

Check your firewire cable. shouldnt be any difference between printing to video on 4.5 or 5. Or perhaps its something else. I am honestly aware of many problems I and some others are having with Tiger / FCP 5, this is not one of them that I'm aware of.
    PS Welcome to discussions!!!

  • How do I set-up my memory amount for max speed for FCP and Motion

Hey all, I have a Dual 2.3 G5 with (8 Gigs) Ram. I'm working with a new client. I want to set up my memory or whatever else to provide MAXIMUM processing power for FCP and MOTION. Does anyone have any recommended settings. I've maxed-our RAM. My card is (ATI Radeon 9600-128MB of VRAM)
Is there a setting in FCP that allows more processing power to be applied to that application ?
    Appreciate any replies

Most of FCP's speed in performing functions is directly related to processor speed. The only way to increase performance would be to use a Mac with faster processors. Performance is also related to data throughput, so if you're working with high data rate video formats, a fast RAID and/or SATA (or eSATA) media storage solution would help.
The exception to FCP performance is when rendering/processing FX Plugs; they are dependent on the power of the graphics card.
Motion is mostly dependent on the power of the graphics card.
There is no way that I'm aware of that you can speed up RAM. Having the extra RAM will just mean that you can successfully work with more applications open at the same time.

  • Fcp - ram speed, bus speed, and 64 bit processing

how much do these (ram speed, bus speed, and 64 bit processing) specs play a role in fcp's performance? I hear conflicting opinions about it's utilization of the 64 bit processor(s). some say yes some say no. is ram speed from one rev to the next that much different, particularly in the last two G5's? Or, is the amount of ram and the processor type the most important considerations in optimizing fcp performance? thanks for your help!

SD/SDI card is to bring in video material in formats other than DV. If all you will ever work in is DV or HDV, firewire only is fine. If you want to work with non-DV formats and without expansion slots, you need to look into something like the AJA io to do your conversion and bring it down firewire. This solution has its own potential problems when the device and the hard drives are on the same bus.
You need a second drive just for media. On the Powermac you simply add a second internal drive. This is not possible on the iMac - an external firewire drive is the only option. This by itself is not an issue. Most people who do this with any seriousness end up adding a series of external hard drives to deal with the mass of media.
The limiting factor is that you only have one firewire bus (all macs have only one firewire bus) and if you run into problems with the camera (or VTR or AJA io) & hard drives not cooperating on one bus, you have no option to fix it. On the iMac, you have no option to add in a card to create a second firewire bus in the system.
So yes, the people at the store are correct. You can make the iMac work (with an external firewire drive). However, if you run into problems, you have severely limited options to mediate them. What I was trying to suggest is some things work better. An analogy might be, If I need to drive nails, the handle of a screwdriver can be made to work, but I should not be surprised if it does it badly and breaks when pushed hard.
    good luck.

  • Mac Pro Configuration : best performance config. using FCP with Doremi's Cine Export

What would be the best Mac Pro configuration option to bring up the most performance(speed) of FCP generating KDM(Key Delivery Message) and DCP(Digital Cinema Package) for cinema use?
Is new Mac Pro compatible with Doremi's Cine Export software? if not i would have to use the previous version of Mac Pro(tower) and would also need the best configuration for this one too!
here's the link for Doremi's Cine Export software - http://www.doremilabs.com/products/cinema-products/cineexport/
I'm not sure if the software above is compatible with FCP X version, because they used to support for FCP 7 only in the previous software...
Anyhow, I'm just starter and I don't have much knowledge about setting up post house, and so.. I'll be glad to take all the feed backs and recommandations from all of you(experts in post production)
    Thank you

    James,
CineExport has not yet been tested with the latest Mac Pro hardware but it has been tested with the latest Mac OSX Mavericks. There is no reason to believe it wouldn't work with the latest Mac Pro hardware. With that said, CineExport is mostly CPU dependent, so the fastest configuration with the most processing cores is recommended.
CineExport is a plug-in for Compressor, not Final Cut Pro. Therefore, it is compatible with FCP 7 and FCP X in the sense that you can use the FCP "Send to Compressor" option and export your DCP from Compressor (using the CineExport plug-in).
