Mac won't detect HDTV thru HDMI (Yosemite)

Hello, I purchased a new MiniDisplay Port to HDMI Cable for my 2011 13 inches MacBook Pro, I received it yesterday. I plugged it to my Mac thru the Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay Port and to the TV thru the HDMI. When i connect it, the Mac screen goes black in quarter of second but nothing happens. When I unplug it too, it goes black real quick but in System Preferences, no HDTV is detected. I held the Alt Key while clicking on "Detect Screens" but nothing shows up ! My TV still says "No Signal". I repaired permissions, reset PRAM but it doesn't work !
My cable is looking fine and is expected to work with post 2010 MacBooks, bringing audio at the same time. What should I do now ? I definitely need this to work as I work on project and 13" screen is too small for me.
PS: I heard many people are experiencing the same issue (mostly after upgrading to Yosemite) but Apple doesn't seem to be looking for solutions...now what ? I have to go back to my old PC ?
Any suggestion would be welcomed.

Hi suffice,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like some speakers are not pairing with OS X. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

  • I have no audio from the mac mini to the hdtv via hdmi cable.

This started immediately after the latest "apple software update"  I updated it automatically on 6/24/2011.  I have an elgato eye tv connected to the mac mini that provides BOTH audio and video through the HDMI to the HDTV.  The elgato eye tv works fine.  I get both audio and video.
However, I only get picture and NO sound from the mac mini to the HDTV via the HDMI output.  No streaming audio either - only picture. Ive tried pandora, netflix, hulu, etc.  I even put in a DVD into the mac mini and again I receive a picture through THE HDMI but no audio.
I've shutdown and rebooted.  I've disconnected power and reconnected power.  I've gone into the system preferences, audo, and highlight the SONY HDTV as the output.  But still nothing.  I do notice when I toggle between the "internal speakers' and the HDMI option, the audio arrow on the lower right is bright blue during the internal speakers option but is grey when the HDMI option is connected.
I called apple care.  Since I'm 98 days past my 90 days of coverage there is no help via human being.  They offered me to set an appointment at the local apple store but they suggested I bring down my 60 inch HDTV with me to the store to be sure it is not a "Sony" issue.  I hope someone can help me resolve this without having to put this mac mini on craigslist and taking a $ hit.
This was not an issue yesterday.  It became an issue after the latest and greatest "update" to prepare our machines for the lovely lion.
    Thanks.

I have the same issue.  I also have the 2010 mac mine and use hdmi for audio to my receiver.  I get audio from eye tv with no problems, but it seems to lock the path so that only it can use that path for audio.  If I restart the computer and do not start eye tv everything else works with hdmi audio.  I have tried using the system settings and changing the source there but it doesnt seem to matter.

  • HDTV thru HDMI will not work correctly

Recently bought an Ideapad s12 netbook, has been running great. Was trying to hook it up to my bravia hdtv thru the hdmi port. Plugged the hdmi cable in and used the fn key to bring up the screen where you choose which display(s) you want to use. I selected external only. My tv says invalid format when getting the hdmi signal from the ideapad. Was reading online about how you have to change the resolution/refresh rate, etc. so that it will display on the tv. The only problem is, to change the resolution of the tv display, the hdmi cable has to be plugged in so that the ideapad can see it. But now that I changed the settings earlier to be external only...Once i plug the cable in it switches to the tv only (which still wont show up) so I am stuck. I don't know how I can get it back to being both displays so that I might be able to change the settings for the tv. Please help. It isn't this difficult using the s-video out on my other laptop, but I know that hdmi is different. Thanks in advance.

    The Problem ist solved.
I use ldap for authentication. During the setup of the ldapclient I copied the nsswitch.ldap to nsswitch.conf. But the line for "hosts:" was:
    hosts:          dns ldap
but in my dns ist no localhost entry. After I changed this line to:
    hosts:          files dns ldap
everything was ok. The statd is now running and I can start to migrate to archlinux ;-)

  • Mac won't detect camera.

I accidently asked about this in the iphone section. My bad. I skimmed through the site and decided to ask here. I'm new to the site so bare with me. I'm sure there are dozens of threads on this site asking things like this but I'll ask anyways. My Mac will not detect my Sony Handycam. It is a Sony DCR-HC28. I have it connected to a Firewire USB chord into my Mac. My Mac is version 10.5.8. I opened iMovie and when I click the camera icon the only option it gives me is for the built in iSight. No option for the camera. I googled and tried a few suggestions but to no luck. I checked System Profiler and found nothing. Charged my camera and rebooted my computer. Got nothing. Unplugged and replugged. Nothing. Any tips??? Is it possible because my Firewire connects through the USB port rather than the Firewire port that it won't work??? I could sure use the help.

Here's a pic of the kinda chord I'm using. It's a Firewire that plugs into USB. If you look closely you can see the USB symbol on the plug.

  • Mac won't start after update to Yosemite

After updating my MacBook Pro 13" to Mac OS X Yosemite, it became so slow (only went to the Apple Community after this problem and found other users experienced the same) so I restarted it. Because restarting, too, took a while, I shut it down by holding down the power button instead. Now, when I boot my Mac, it shows the Apple logo with the progress bar but it goes up to about one-fourth progress then shows an error/stop icon. Can't get through the login screen. How do I fix this?

Solved by going back to 3.5.10. All settings and bookmarks came back. Won't be upgrading again anytime soon - or will be switching to Chrome!

  • Mac won't detect second superdrive (pics)

so, here's the story. i flashed my macs superdrive (both of them) and after that one of them was just completely gone. when i go into system profiler and go under hawrdware and into ATA, it detects both drives, but when i go into Disc Burning, i only see one.
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
any and all help would be greatly appreciated as i can't burn discs right now. thanks.

thank you for all of your responces, but it sounds like the easiest method to fixing this is just replacing my drives.
    1. Are both drives set with CS selected?
I'm not sure what CS stands for. Sorry
    2. Did both drives come with the Mac Pro?
    Both drives are stock.
    3. Can you provide a link to the flasher and the firmware you used?
    http://www.hardmac.com/articles/62/page3/
    4. What command did you use to make the flash work?
    http://www.hardmac.com/articles/62/page3/
    5. Did you dump the old firmware to oldfirm.bin so you
    could go back to it?
yes, i did. and i went back and tried dumping the oldfirm.bin but when i try and do that, the terminal says that there is an error. i suspect that there is an error because it can't see the second drive, it only sees one.
like i said earlier, it is my own fault for messing around with this awesome machine and 30 bucks for a new drive is a small price to pay for learning not to mess with things that you aren't too sure how to mess with. it's a shame i can't fix these drives though, i didn't even get to burn a single disc.

  • Mac won't boot after disk repair -Yosemite

yosemite slowed my MacBook Pro down to a crawl... Even just opening iTunes took forever.
Ran disk utility, then disk repair in recovery mode...  and now my my Mac just turns off about 40% into start up. Can only start up in Recovery mode now.
Ironic how apples own disk software is what caused this catastrophe.
I back up annually to Ext hard drive so all is not lost, but I'd like a chance to recover my most recent files and downloads from the last 6 months, if possible?
thanks in advance for any help... (I'm not a techie, pls talk in little kid words)

  • IPhoto on new Mac won't detect Faces

Have just got a new 27" iMac and assumed I was saving time just by copying the iPhoto library from my old iMac into my pictures folder and opening it. But I'm now having problems with recognising faces - iPhoto (on the new mac) is either not pulling up any new suggestions for faces already on my corkboard, or is just recognising one or two suggestions while I know there are . Other people already in my iPhoto library that I want to add to Faces are having to be added manually for every single photo. Is there someway of re-scanning my entire iPhoto library for general Faces recognition, or is there a preferences file or folder I should have transferred over from my old iMac to make sure that people already in the iPhoto library I've transferred onto my new iMac will be recognised and not be so time consuming trying to add them to the corkboard. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I was saving time just by copying the iPhoto library from my old iMac into my pictures folder and opening it.
That wasn't "saving time". That's the only way to migrate a Library from one machine to another. Anything else means starting a new Library over from scratch.
To rescan your entire Library would require removing the Faces you have.
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

I have an Epson printer on a Wifi network. Windows 7 desktop is running the network, and my wife's HP Win 7 laptop prints to it just fine. My MacBook Pro running Yosemite won't detect it, and I do have the latest driver installed. I didn't have a problem when I had a Canon Pixma on the network, but when I replaced it with the Epson nothing seems to work. I go to add a printer to the queue and only the FAX function of the printer shows up - not the WS-4530 print function. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?  Please??? :-)

    Hi Kelly,
As someone who has to print from my Mac to a networked printer at home all the time, I can certainly understand how frustrating it must be to have that fail to perform as expected. Let's see if we can get you up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • Imac running Yosemite won't detect external display

I previously was using a 2008 iMac desktop and running OS X Yosemite. I was using dual monitors (other monitor being Insignia brand) and everything worked fine. Since this was an earlier mac version, I was using the Mini DVI to VGA Adapter to connect. Last week, I got a brand new iMac (Mid 2014 version). I am running OS X Yosemite as well, but now it won't detect any displays. I'm now using the Thunderbolt cable to connect so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. But I have used that same Thunderbolt cable before on my macbook and it worked just fine.
I've tried restarting, resetting the PRAM and everything. I don't know what else to do. Help!

Thanks for the reply, but tried everything and it still won't work. Rebooted, installed updates, cleared PRAM, everything. It will not detect the displays at all. Maybe there is something wrong with my VGA cable.

  • Mac mini will not recognize my hdtv through hdmi to hdmi

I just bought the new mac mini, got home super excited, hooked it up to my hdtv through hdmi to hdmi and nada.
I have a Vizio, 42-inch, 50/60 hz, Plasma TV.  It was made in 2006 so there is no DVI port, it only has an RGB port other than the 2 HDMI ports.
I have tried both HDMI ports.
I tried turning everything off, unplugging everything waiting 10 seconds, reconnecting everything and turning the mac mini on first, then the tv AND vice versa.
    Nothing.
My HDMI cable was kind of old so I went out and bought a new one from Belkin.
    Nothing.
It does look like the TV is recognizing the device because it does not say "No signal", so it seems that the mac mini itself is not recognizing it.
I just bought this thing, it has not even been setup yet!
And I do not have another moniter here to hook it up to.
I tried calling Apple Care, but I called at 7:30 waited for 30 minutes for someone to tell me they were transferring me to tech support, then the phone rang for 10 minutes.  I hung up and called back and they said the office was closed!
I am a die hard mac user, but I am at my wit's end here.
I guess my next step is to take it to the genius bar?
But I wanted to see if anyone out there has any suggestions/ideas?
(I know there are other discussions out there about this, but nothing I found actually helped my situation.
    Thanks everyone.

I just got my mac mini as well and I'm having the same problem with my HDTV. Unfortunately I am not at home so I do not have the tv model on hand but it is a Panasonic from 05/06.  I am trying to connect from the HDMI on the mini to the HDMI port on the tv and when it boots up the grey start upscreen shows up on the tv and loads for alittle bit than everything goes black. Any ideas?

Lol, figured out the first part. Just for those who may be searching, when you click on the Display Preferences, and click on the arraingment tab... it not only shows where your two screens will be displayed, but the WHITE BAR at the top of one screen is the dock/toolbar. Click and hold to grab this and just slide it over to the screen you'd like it to be on.
You have to release it IN the screen box, not on top of it... and it should pop right over to the new (or old) screen. At any rate, you can put the dock on either (or any) screen that you prefer.
I am thinking of ordering more of these. Lol. 3 monitor setup seems like it would be crazy good.
Still looking for the answer to keeping the new 16" screen on the right without switching between screen #s with that... not expose... Lion feature.
Thanks. Hope my other question has an answer out here.

The only key commands I know that involve P is a PRAM reset:
