Mac won't recognise Nikon D80

I'm trying to upload photos from a Nikon D80 I've had for several years, but haven't used lately. When I connect it using the Nikon supplied USB cable, the camera display indicates it's connected to a computer, but the Mac doesn't recognise there's a camera connected to it. This problem occurs on my MacBook Pro and also on my iMac. It also occurs whether I use Aperture or iPhoto. Aperture version is 3.4.5. I conclude there's a connection problem between camera and MacOS, but I don't know how to diagnose or correct it.

As i said I'm not a Nikon user so I might be way off base but I downloaded the manual for the D80 and under the section on connecting to a computer is where they mention the different modes when connected.
If you don;t have the manual you can get it here Product Manual in pdf format. Look for the section Connecting to a Computer under Reference. If you download the pdf manual open it in Preview it is easier to move around in it there then in Safari.
If the camera has been in limited use for that long it is possible something got reset in it. I'd give that section a look to see if it helps.
If in the past the camera showed as a device on the desktop that indicates to me the camera should be set to Mass Storage so look in the manual for how to get to that setting in the camera.
good luck

  • Mac won't recognise camcorder

My mac won't recognise my sony DCR-PC5E. It works fine on Windows, and my mac recognises other Sony DV's using the same firewire. Any ideas? I don't want to have to buy a new camcorder....

    Martin,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Assuming you're using FireWire (what sony calls iLink) your camera should work.
Have a look through some of the tips in this thread:

  • My mac won't recognise my new belkin hub hardware. Any Suggestions? It used to recognise it before I had the hard drive replaced

My mac won't recognise my new belkin hub hardware. Any Suggestions? It used to recognise it before I had the hard drive replaced and now it doesn't.

Pull out all of your USB devices, and reboot. Now, replace the USB devices they way you'd like them to work. That reassigns the devices so you can use them again.
Respond here...I'm interested how this turns out.

  • Old Itunes library (from PC) on external hard drive - Mac won't recognise

I feel like I've tried absolutely everything, so hopefully someone here can help.
I had my Itunes library stored on an external disc. This was when I was using Itunes on a PC. It all ran fine....
Now we've upgraded to a Mac and for the life of me I cannot get Itunes to recognise the library.
First I just tried changing the folder location with no luck. Now I've tried holding down alt when starting Itunes, I've located the folder, and at first it seemed all was well as the albums (sans artwork) all appeared in Itunes. But when I try to play them or send songs to my Iphone, it says it can't locate the file. I've tried to then manually point it to the external drive and the old library and it still won't recognise it.
    Can anyone suggest anything??

  • Mac won't recognise external burner

my mac has been working with my external apple burner, however, it now won't recognise it even though i have a blank cd inserted and i'm unable to eject it

Turn off everything and disconnect the external burner, then do an NVRAM reset.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
    Turn on your Mac.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
    Release the keys.
Reconnect the burner and try using it.

  • Mac won't recognise the CD in the Optical Drive

My MacBook Pro won't recognise the CD in the Optical Drive. So I can't eject it put new one in.
Why is doing this? How do I solve the problem and get my CD out?

Are the CD's you are trying to install store bought CD's?
What you might try doing if the CD drive is not showing up under the source is going to file and then clicking on Add to Library within iTunes. Find the CD inside of My Computer and trying to add the music.

  • Mac won't recognise my camera

My Nikon D700 has become invisible to my new Mac. I managed to download some photos at first, but now Adobe Bridge (CS5) is telling me 'None detected' in the 'get photos from camera' list, & the camera is not seen by the Finder either. Can anyone advise what to do; I've never had this problem with any PC running Windows!

    Do these two resets:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • ACR 5.1 on Mac: won't open Nikon P6000 raw (.NRW)

The compact Nikon p6000 has a new raw format .NRW and I cannot open it in ACR 5.1. Bridge will not render thumbnails either.
In another thread I found elsewhere, a user shows the screen below proving he can open an NRW in CS4/ACR 5.1.
    http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1007&message=29821435
I appear to have the same configuration but I cannot open these files. What's the trick?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter G.

Fixed it! I compared the Camera Raw plug-in dates and the one on my Mac had a create date of 10/20/08. I compared it to the one from the adobe download site and that has a create date of 10/9/08.
So I moved the existing one, re-downloaded the one from the adobe site and copied in manually. So what would have changed the create date on the plug-in on my computer? Not sure. It was installed by CS4 automatically.
My guess is that the installation of the Camera Profiles beta did something to the Camera Raw plug-in. The P6000 camera is new and I had not tried the raw prior to installing the Camera Profiles? Not gonna fret it as it is working now, but the troubleshooter in me is curious how it happened.
    Thanks to all who contributed.
Note: in Bridge now, when I highlight the thumbnail of an NRW, on the right side in Metadata/File Properties, it says Document Type "Camera Raw Image".... before it was saying "nrw".
    Regards,
    P.G.

  • Mac won't recognise my JVC video camera

Last night when I connected my video camera it did work and I was able to put a whole tape onto my hard drive. However this morning my iMac would no longer recognise my camera.
    - My camera is JVC GR-D53AA.
    - The connection I am using is firewire.
    - The software I've been using is iMovie.
    - I've lost the installation CD but have a feeling it wouldn't be mac-compatible anyway. I've attempted to find a driver in the thought that might help, but to no avail.
    - I checked out system profiler and it said, "Unable to list FireWire devices."
I've turned my camera on and off, quit and restarted iMovie; didn't help.
    Unplugged and replugged cords.
I don't know whether the problem lies with my camera or computer or what.
Any help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the same problem and obviously the repairing permission's seems to work... unfortunately as happy as I am knowing that someone has found a solution to a problem that I am also faced with... I am faced with the problem that I am a fourteen year old Mac illiterate... could you possibly explain in order how to 'repair permissions'?
    Cheers, Micko.

  • My WD Passport for mac won't recognise its own password or show up on the desktop

I have a Macbook Pro and have been using the Passport for 3 months without a problem. The cable was pulled out without ejecting the Passport the correct way. Now it doesn't show up on the desktop and a colourless window pops up and asks for the password. Im 100% sure the password is correct. The window thinks about it for about 20sec then shakes to not accept it.
I have tried to repair the Passport and that has not worked. Does anyone have another solutations to access the HD?
The passport still works, the light comes on and still spins.
It seems as if it has forgotten its own password and not recognised by the computer.

    Allan,
    Thank you for your reply.
Yes the WD Passport for Mac has its own password to access the drive. It is an option that i stupidly activated once it was installed. Previously as i plugged the Passport in it would pop up on my desktop and ask for the password. Which it would accept and then i could access the data. Now nothing comes up on my desktop but still asks for the password but does not accept it. The colour of the window for the password has also changed. It now looks like the "security and privacy" icon that you can find in your systems preferences.
It seems as if it has forgotten its own password or there is some other security or problem blocking me.
I obviously wasn't aware that this product had so many problems. I have not installed the Mavericks program to this computer yet as it takes time and im on the road without and solid internet connections.
I will persist with searching forums and trying to recover the data
Any information or help would be awesome!!!!

  • My mac won't recognise my iPod classic-any ideas why or how I can fix it?

My ipod classic is quite old but still functioning properly as far as battery life etc is concerned. However I recently bought a Mac Pro and it will not recognise my ipod. Occasionally it will 'find' it but I cannot access it through itunes to edit my library. PLEASE HELP! Thanks, Courts

    Quit iTunes.
Use Disk Utility and select the drive if you can, then select Erase and the middle or security option zero all data option (will delete all data of course).
When that's finished, use iTunes to restore it.
That's how I fixed mine. Make sure it's charged up first, the Mac ports sometimes cut the power off.

  • Mac won't recognise external hard-drive

    Hi there,
I've just tried to transfer some files from my external hard-drive which I usually use with my OS 10.5, onto another PC, and was unsuccessful. Then when I plugged the hard-drive back into my mac, the device doesn't appear on screen as it usually does. I've also looked in my computer and the hard-drive isn't showing and I can't access any of the files on it. Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue please? Would really appreciate some help!
    Thanks.

  • 2008 Mac won't recognise software updates?

Currently on Mac OS x 10.5.8 and want to install latest - how do i do this?

Back up your data, click here, and read the entire page. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004; some other installed software may also be incompatible.
