MacBook Air, Time Machine backup
My wife's Macbook Air (late 2010, snow leopard) is being replaced by Apple (warranty) this weekend with the new MacBook Air ,(Lion) I had her old 'Air backed up over wifi to my iMac's Time Machine and it shows as xxxx Air1.sparsbundle. I read the faq on time machine and it states that each backup is not related to the computer name but a hardware address. In order to regain all my wife's documents and emails what exactly do I have to do with the new MacBook Air to enable it to access the sparsbundle from the original 'Air if it is indeed looking for the original hardware address?
Thanks
Neil
If you use the Setup Assistant that pops up the first time you turn on the new Air, use the option to transfer the old info from the TM backups. It will have you join the WiFi network and then guide you through the rest, but it should be fairly easy.
See this article for more details that you'll probably ever need: http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/SetupLion.html
Just curious, but did you create a separate partition for her TM backups to go to on the drive? If not, this could potentially cause some problems, but nothing that are unworkable. As a general rule for TM backups it's best to have a unique partition for each machine's backups if you're backing up multiple computers on one physical drive.
Cheers

Wipe new Macbook Pro - Time Machine Backup Issue
Hi,
I recently purchased a 15" Macbook Pro, i'd previously been using a Mac Pro - through which everything was backed up through Time Machine onto a external HD.
When i started using the Macbook Pro i by-passed the initial Migration request as i had'nt yet got the 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for my external HD (have one now).
When i tried routing timeline on the MBP to the Time Machine backup on my external HD it ended up creating a separate user account on my MBP. This isn't what i wanted - i thought i could pick up where the Mac Pro left off but have'nt been able to figure out how. It's also slowed the MBP down alot, so i want to wipe it and start afresh - hopefully figuring out the Time Machine issue in the process.
Thanks,
brokenboyYou can by doing this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
When the system restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant from which you can initiate a migration from a Time Machine backup. In this way you will not end up with multiple user accounts. -
Can use old macbook for Time Machine Backup?
Have an old macbook running snow leopard. Can I use it for Time Machine Back-up for my current macbook pro?
Boot your old into Target Disk mode, then plug a FireWire cable from your old to your pro. Presto! Your old's internal HD will appear in your pro's Finder as a disk on your pro. Time machine running on your pro can use it for backup. Time machine won't disturb its contents, except to add a potentially huge folder there, which will grow to fill the disk with copies of your backups. (Backing up, then) partitioning (and then restoring from backup) your old's internal hard drive will keep your pro's Time Machine from consuming all free space.

New unibody macbook pro time machine backup stalling/stalls
I have been using time machine to back up my Macbook Pro 17 (First Gen), I have 2 external Western Digital Drives connected via USB in a RAID (Striped) Configuration. Everything has worked fine for months and the backups are quite snappy...
I just changed to a NEW Unibody Macbook Pro 17 and formatted the drives, set up the RAID configuration again from fresh in disk utility and reset Time Machine and said OK when it requested to use the drive for backups.
The process gets some way into backing up... sometimes 7GB, 13GB, 17GB even 70GB and then just stops. The hard drives(at least one of them anyway i cant tell exactly) spin down and the file count in Time Machine window just stops. There is no error message and the window just stays there saying its backing up but there is no external HD activity. I have to cancel the backup (which sometimes - but not always - causes everything to stall until i unplug the drives by whipping the USB cable out). Everything then works fine i dont need to restart and it just brings up an error message saying that Time Machine failed to backup...
Any ideas??
I do have antivirus software installed (VirusScan) but i have had that on my previous machine aswell so it cant be that...I have a MacBook C2Duo (black 2008) customer who has upgraded to 10.5.7 with a new internal and external hard disk and a fresh install of the OS. After doing this, Time Machine constantly stalled at 12.55 GB when backing up to an external disk (USB2). After a lot of reading on the net, I think the problem marks the re-emergence of an old bug where the mdworker task used by Spotlight to index drives is crashing and starting to take up to 99% of the CPUs. At this point, TM simply does not have enough CPU time to work and crawls almost to a halt.
I messed around for a while with Activity Monitor watching the mdworker crash and it is very predictable. Time Machine buddy does not pick it up because of course TM is still working albeit at a snail's pace.
Since mdworker is very associated with Spotlight, I tried setting Spotlight to not index any folderssame problem.
Finally, I set the TM destination drive to be a Private drive in the Spotlight Preferences and it finished without an mdworker crash.
It might be a temporary workaround or it might be coincidence that TM worked this time, so YMMV and Apple should look at this too. -
Macbook air time machine files locked
Hi all, I have just changed form an iMac to a Macbook Air and used a My Passport Air to back up all of my data from the iMac. When I put the drive onto the laptop initially it worked and I could view all of the files no problem. However, my husband has since clicked the buttons for Time Machine to go ahead and do whatever it does and it has now locked any files that are in the 'other user' files from the iMac. So on the iMac there was a user account for him, me, guest and shared. Mine and the guest files have a no entry symbol and say I do not have permission to access these files.......HELP!
Thanks in advance!johnt2626 wrote:
When I open the actual drive I can see a "Back-ups" folder for the iMac but only an image for the MacBook.
Are you backing up the MBA to the drive via a wireless (afp:) connection to the iMac?
If so, then it's correct that you see an image for the MBA Time Machine. If you open the image you will see a "Back-ups" folder.
Does the Back-up appear to be completing to quickly? (I've had this problem a few times).
You can 'force' a deep traversal by starting the MBA in Safe Mode (hold the shift key while booting), then shutting down and re-starting the MBA and then starting Time Machine. -
Can I use a single external drive to maintain time machine backups for two Mac computers?
Hello
We have an older mac mini and macbook air. I have one Western Digital external USB drive. Can I use the same drive to hold and maintain time machine backups for both machines?
I already have the macbook air time-machined on the WD drive. I now want to backup the mac mini onto the same drive. Is it going to over write the time machine backup or is the software smart enough to maintain two separate files, partitions, whatever it does..?It will maintain separate backups. Note that it's generally advisable to use separate drives for best practice backup, but yes, it will work for both computers, provided you have enough space (need generally 2-3 times the total used file space for both Macs).

Why is iCloud drive Time Machine backup locked?
While it works flawlessly on my Macbook Air, Time Machine appears to be locked on my MBP when I try to recover past icloud Drive backup such as a Pages document. Time M machine opens and lets me go back in time for any other folder, but not for iCloud Drive that remains sort of "frozen", although my backups go back more than one year. Is there a way to understand why this would not work on one laptop while it is on the other, having exactly the same identical specifications? Thank you in advance for your help!
It looks like it tries to start loading safe mode and the loading bar appears under the spinning lines under the apple but then the bar gets almost half full and just dissapears. I'm left with just that grey apple screen and the spinning lines again.
The only other startup option that seemed to get me somewhere other than the grey screen is when I hold the "option" key and choose from the hard drive or the dvd drive to boot. I can run from the dvd OS X disk that I made. Is there anything I can do there? -
Time Machine backup to a HD on another Mac on my network?
_The short story_:
I want my MacBook Pro Time Machine backup drive to be one connected to my G5. The MacBook and G5 are connected via my wired network. I have file sharing turned on and can access it, with read and write permissions, but Time Machine can't find it. How do I browse for it and select it?
_The Long story_:
I was out of town for 8 months, during which time I bought a MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.2). I also purchased an OWC 1.5TB HD which I connected directly to the MacBook via Firewire 800 and used it for Time Machine backups. Cake.
Now I am home, where my trusty old G5 resides. The G5 is at OS 10.5.8. The MacBook and G5 are both on my wired network.
I connected the new OWC 1.5TB drive to the G5 via Firewire 800. I can see this drive from my MacBook via file sharing, can read and write to it, etc, but when I go to "Select Backup Disk" in Time Machine on the MacBook, no drives show up. If I right-click on the Time Machine icon and select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks", there is nothing there either.
Essentially, I just need to find that same drive which is now connected to another networked Mac.
The only user account I have on each machine is just a single Admin account. Does it have something to do with creating a new account on the G5?
Since the drive in question is connected to the G5, it seems like the G5 is the gateway (for lack of a better term) for my MacBook to get to that drive. I just don't know how to make that happen, since when browsing in Time Machine for backup drives, you can't select a networked computer and then drill down to a specific drive.I was hoping to find a way to automatically mount the OWC drive on the desktop of my MacBook, so on the MacBook I selected "Go" in Finder and chose "Connect to Server". I selected my G5 and was then able to drill down to the OWC drive. That brought up a Finder window that allowed me to access everything on the G5. I guess that is just basic file sharing via my network.
I had a feeling that would allow Time Machine on the MacBook to use that drive, and it did. However, when I selected "Back Up Now", it appears to create a new backup, not just the usual incremental backup that you get after the first time you use Time Machine.
I am closer, but clearly don't have the full solution. I was hoping Time Machine would see that drive as the same one it had been using (since it is), but obviously it wants to start a backup from scratch, so to speak.
Ideas? -
How can I restore files from my old iMac to this new purchased MacBook Air? I am using time machine backup in my old imac.
Hi,
Try Target Disk Mode
OS X Yosemite: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
There is also Migration Assistant.
OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device -
I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?
If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.
... Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?
To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina
That gets a little more expensive but it is the optimum solution. -
What if a Time Machine backup was created on a Mac with a large hard disk, e.g. 500GB iMac - and I buy a new MacBook Air with a small SSD hard disk e.g 128GB. What happens when I need to use the larger Time Machine file to set up the new MacBook Air? What happens to all those files that can't fit on the smaller SSD drive?
It is not the HD size, but rather the size of the data it contains. If you right-click your 500GB drive and select "Get Info" you can see how much is actually being used.
Naturally if you are using more space than the new drive has, then you have to make some choices about what you want to keep and what you want to keep archived.
I don't know what options are available but you may simply have to do a manual restore of files you want, in groups. -
Help! Macbook Air lost association with USB Airport hosted Time Machine Backup
Okay, so my wife's Macbook Air was doing Time Machine backup to USB drive attached to previous generation Airport Extreme...
We bought a brand new Airport router a couple of weeks ago, I plugged it in and everything went smoothly. Plugged in USN drive that attached to older APE router, and it's still visible on the network. However, ever since we got the new router, the existing backups are not associated with the Macbook Air anymore.
Yes, I can start over with a new backup file, but I was hoping to use the existing backup (it takes a while to backup wirelessly, and we lose the whole history if we wanted to recover previous versions of files that were backed up—I can't think of anything we'd need right now, but Murphy's Law will probably apply if I go ahead and erase the old and start new).
I was hoping all I would have to do was drag the old backup file onto the Time Machine icon to re-associate it with this computer, but I can't see any way to tell Time Machine, "hey, here's the backup file you are looking for... it's right here on the same USB drive attached to the new router."
(Also, before anyone says to make sure I have a backup of the backup, I do. The computer is backed up offsite with Backblaze, too.)
Perhaps it will be best to just start from scratch with a new Time Machine backup, that just seems like overkill, since there was nothing wrong or corrupt with the existing Time Machine file, I just switched what router it was attached to. Thanks for any advice/enlightenment.I guess I have a few comments.
Apple has an opt out.. they do not support Time Machine backups on older Airport Extreme. Apple have always stated it is unreliable and so refused to support it.. only with Gen6 of the AE have they changed to supporting TM backups.
From your point of view it should have worked.. it may indeed still work. But the change of network is significant and it will take some work on your part.
1. I need to know what OS is the MBA running??
2. Moving a disk from one network location to another, I would strongly recommend a full reset of Time Machine on the computer.
See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
3. Pondini in the same reference has some info about inheriting old backups .. slightly different context but it also could help.
see B5 and B6
4. It is also possible to move old backups into a new backup.. but this is then going too far.
I would simply buy a new USB drive.. and keep the old backup drive for a few months until your new one builds up sufficient history to be sure you will not need the old ones.. at that point you can use the old backup drive again after a reformat.
5. To do the new backup, since wireless is indeed a long and burdensome chore to make that crucial first backup, buy a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.. assuming your MBA is recent enough. Ethernet is so worthwhile having it is required not optional extra. The cost at $35 is one of the cheapest adapters for a very expensive interface.. -

New Macbook Air transferred by Time Machine Backup USB--fan/temps
Hello,
I just got the last version of the macbook air, with 120HDD and 1.86 cpu. I thought that I would have to try to transfer everything from my Imac 27" through wifi transfer but when I started up the macbook air it asked if I had a time machine backup I would like to use through USB (which I have used many times before to basically transfer all my data, applications, and settings.) It took a while and the macbook air's fans kicked in during the transfer, which is from the Imac with snow leopard. total transfer was around 45gb. I thought this type of transfer wasn't possible. I also did a long software update after the transfer.
MY QUESTION: could any of this account for the macbook air running hot now, fan at about 6200rpm. I am in Paris and it is very hot here now, so maybe this accounts for it. I'll see in the morning. I am just wondering if the machine will run hot now because perhaps because of the type of transfer I executed, which might have included programs or apps not directly related to the macbook air itself. Again, we are in a heat wave here so perhaps this contributes to it. Don't these machines run rather quietly?
any advice would be appreciated. I could always start again, do a reinstall, etc. but except for the fans running, I have everything I need on the machine and would really prefer not buying the external dvd ir starting over again.
ThanksI learned that the macbook air shipped with Leopard, but after migrating everything over from my Imac 27" with Snow Leopard, my system now on the Macbook Air is exactly what I have on the Imac. After the initial backup from Time Machine I did a software update, which brought the system up to 10.6.4. I suppose on some level part of one system did transfer over to the Macbook Air, or at least it updated the system that was shipped on the Air. I did call Apple and was told that if there were issues during the Time Machine backup the system would have alerted or panics would have occurred. The guy wasn't 100% sure, but felt that the backup went normally.
The Air seems to work fine, but the fans kick up from the base of 2500rpm when I watch a video or download video files for a few minutes as an experiment. I don't want to do a complete re-install with the original DVD discs, with all of the trouble that implies, if the machine is going to run rather hot with fans increasing in any case. I suppose that's why I am looking for confirmation one way or another.
It was suggested that I log out and open another account empty of data and see if that makes a difference.
If the machine will run cooler with a re-install, no problem. But it sounds as if all of that could be for naught.
Any other comments would be appreciated.
