Macbook backlight issue

It seems like every other LED is dead on my macbook pro. This is the second macbook pro I have received from apple. The first one I bought lit on fire. The magsafe nearly burned my house down due to overheating, melting, and bursting into flame. After all the trouble of getting it fixed and still having issues, they sent me a new macbook pro.
It seems odd that apples flagship computer is such a pile of garbage, and that the screen can't even stay light up. If i knew how to post pics on here I would, but until I learn they will sit on my cell phone. Last time I complained about my computer LIGHTING ON FIRE an apple tech called me before I had a chance to get ahold of them. I hope I get the quick reply I deserve and they RESOLVE this problem or I will NEVER in my life buy another mac product again. NOT for home, not for work, or anything else.
Spending 3000$ on a computer seems strange when an ACER that costs 300$ can actually keep a backlight lit on its screens.
Is anybody else having this problem? I searched it on google and it said it happens often

stuff fails, sounds like you've been very unlucky, but apple sells millions of units, most are fine otherwise apple wouldn't still be in business
we've got two powerbooks, two macbook pros, two macbooks and two imacs, only one hardware failure in 7 years - fixed under warranty - and all are still running well
the best thing to do is call technical support and arrange for repair/replacement...

  • Early 08 Macbook Backlight Issue

The backlight on my macbook has been acting very wierd lately. It is now turning off at random times, however, if I bring the brightness all the way down to zero and then raise it again the light comes back on. The screen works the whole time, just no backlight. I tried resetting the PRAM and then the SMC and both seemed to make the problem go away only for it to come back later.

Unchecking "Automatically reduce brightness..." in the Energy Saver Preferences fixed this problem for me.
    Original Symptoms:
Turn on Macbook, screen becomes fully lit through the apple screen, then dims completely when the OS begins to load. The display can be seen slightly using ambient light, but the backlight is completely off.
    Temporary Fix:
The temporary fix was to dim the screen using the function key, then brighten one or two levels. Brightening any more would cause the backlight to go off.
    The Cure:
After unchecking the "Automatically reduce brightness..." boxes (in both Battery and Power Adapter mode), I was able the turn the brightness up completely without any other changes or need for a restart.

  • 2007 MacBook Backlight Issues?

    Hey everyone,
My old, faithful 2007 MacBook has just encountered a spot of trouble with its backlight. The backlight is off/ on the lowest setting and unresponsive to commands via the brightness control keys and changes within system settings. When restarting the computer, the light is functional for a split second before reverting to total darkness.
Both reseting the SMC and the PMC (?) have proven fruitless (removing battery, holding power for 5 seconds, re-inerting battery and restarting computer as well as pressing alt+option+p+r upon restart).
I am trying to get a hold of a cable to attempt hooking it up to an external monitor to see if that works (seems some others on the forums have had luck with it). If not, will I be looking at needing some hardware replacements? Or are there other methods I can try?
Thanks in advance for your time and help - I really appreciate it!

Thanks for the reply - i will give them a call, alternatively will try sourcing the item my self. I have had a few problems in the past with this particular MacBook, they are as follows:
    - Keyboard Replaced (Under 1yr Hardware Warranty by a AASP, they fitted the older version keyboard with the Apple logo)
    - Bottom case replaced due to hairline cracks. (Under 1yr Hardware by AASP)
    - Hard Drive replaced (At an AASP)
    - Bottom case bezel + keyboard replaced again (AASP, fitted incorrect keyboard again)
    - Graphics related thing replaced to solve multiple colored lines vertically on screen (AASP)
    - Bottom case bezel + keyboard replaced a third time (Apple store, correct keyboard placed back on - No warranty)
    - Screen surround (white bezel) replaced (Apple Store - no warranty)
The battery had also died at the last point, they didn't mention it at the Genious bar, but when i got it back they had given me a brand new battery (not even mentioned in the documentation)
Is this an absurd amount of things that have been replaced within 2 years?

  • Black macbook backlight display issue

im working on a friends macbook. the issue is the display. the laptop boots up just fine but after laptop has powered up the screen stays dark. the battery is charged. when the "f2" is tapped once the display lights up a little. when pressed again it goes back to dim. i then have to press the "f1" key to bring down to the lowest setting. i do this all over again some times i can get to around the 3rd brightness setting then it automatically drops to dim. i assume the backlight bulb itself is ok so am i right in saying the inverter is going bad or is there something in the "f1" "f2" keys that is not making a good connection. I hope i explained this well enough. Thanks.

Actually, I don't think you can hook up the USB to a RGB cable.
Wich imputs does your projector support? VGA?
If your projector supports VGA imput you can use a displayport cable with VGA exit and plug the projector there.

  • My MacBook Pro 2011 model has a backlight issue- pls someone help

I have a early 2011 MacBook pro that has a backlight issue, im able to connect it to an external monitor just fine.
Brought it to a repair shop and they swapped the screen including the lvd cable but the problem still exist.
Have already spend a lot of money to no avail. What could be the issue? :(
Apple said it only needs a new screen which doesn't seem to be true.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
    It is under warranty  https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
If it is more than one computer and both chargers are not working I suspect you need to replace.
If it was just one Mac I might suggest  reset SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

  • MacBook backlight goes off when lid partially closed

My 2yr old MacBook backlight has started turning off when the screen is partially closed. It works fine if the screen is open beyond a certain angle (about 90 degrees), but turns off when the screen is closed beyond that angle. Comparing to another MacBook (newer system): the backlight stays on until the screen/lid is just about closed.
It's definitely the backlight (the logo goes off as well), not the system suspending.
I'm worried this may be an early sign of a general failure.
It's well out of warranty -- any ideas what part should I look at replacing?

    Louie -
I have the mid 2009 MBP - is there a magnet inside the unibody aluminum housing? The lid latch below the track pad is smooth and seems to have some magnetic attraction to the lid itself.
    S.U. -
My problem is that the screen does not go off when the lid is closed. The problems described with the SMC reset involve the screen backlight not turning on. It also says to not reset the SMC unnecessarily. WIll that reset affect anything else?
Tried the paper clip - no joy. Will check with a magnet at work.
Is there a time setting for sleep mode on close?

  • Ipod Touch 2g Backlight Issue

Hello all. I have a Ipod Touch 2g with a backlight issue. The screen is readable and all functions except the backlight work fine, but no backlight. No water damage or recent drops. I did a restore and the backlight started working again, but after my next sync and reboot the backlight stopped working again. To me this does not seem like a hardware problem. Are there any known issues with the newest version of the OS that might have caused this? Any ideas on a fix?

Interestingly, I just tried to update my applications through the App store on my ipod. The connection failed and suddenly the backlight came back on. Nothing new happened. I didn't move it, tap it, or anything else. This is very odd.

my macbook backlight of display is not glowing, icons are hardly visible please help me what can i do.......

If its under warranty, its something that the applestore will fix fairly quickly. If not, it all depends on if you are willing to spend that amount of money to get it fixed.

  • Macbook Startup Issue - Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2006 mac book had a start up issue a couple of years back, I'd boot her up to be greeted with a screen displaying a start up failed message in three different languages on a grey screen. http://www.minneapolispcrepair.com/images/mac%20error%20screen.jpg
Looking into the issue I noticed this model of Macbooks had issues with their hard drives and they could be replaced under warranty. Brilliant, booked myself into see a Genius and ha presto a few weeks later my hard drive had been replaced. However a couple of weeks after the replacement the issue started happening again but after a few attempts the Macbook would fire up so it wasn't really an issue just a pain in the butt!! Now 18 months down the line its becoming a real issue again, it must take 7 or 8 attempts to fire the blasted thing up, 25 is my highest so how.
My question is, what could be causing this start up issue, could it be the hard drive again???? as replacing the hard drive previously didn't really solve the issue in the first place?? Would apple replace this hard drive again????
The MB is a late 2006 model with Dual Core run Snow Leopard
    Hope someone can help :o(
    Thanks
    Deano

This looks like a kernel panic. Try to startup the mac in safe mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455) and observe for a few startups whether the problem occurs again or not.
If this solves the problem then you may have a problem with your software installation. Consider reinstalling os x or take a look at your system log file and search for kernel panics (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742).
If the problem persists you may have an issue with your hardware. I would recommend to take it to an Apple Genius to have the system checked (free of charge afaik).

  • Very strange backlight issue

I have a 600mhz (16 VRAM) iBook that I'm trying to fix for a friend. It has a strange backlight issue. Everytime the ibook is started, it chimes, and shows the screen (bright and perfect), but as soon as 9.2 starts to load, the backlight goes out. It is not intermittent, it happens at the exact same time every time I start it up (right when the progress bar starts to move). I reset the PRAM, which caused the computer to now look for a startup device, so all the extra time it takes search, the backlight is fine. Here's what I've tried.
In firewire mode, the backlight never comes on
With a hardware test disc, the backlight never comes on
    Reset the PRAM (several times)
    Reset the PMU (several times)
    Any ideas out there?

As an update, I tried a Mac OS 10.4 startup disc which seemed to work, and the backlight came on with no problems. The machine did freeze on the welcome screen right after I selected english as the language of choice. So I tried a 10.3 disc which yeilds a kernal panic of "Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook 4,3". After this, I tried a 9.2.2 disc which boots (takes 20 mins to boot) and when I try to load the installer I receive a "this program can not run on this machine", and it closes. This really seems like a strange problem. Any ideas?

  • Possible iBook G4 Backlight issue??

Hello All - Hope everyone had a great Holiday.
Here is my issue, I hope someone can give me some advice.
I am working with an iBook G4 1.07Ghz Model Number - UV4280JMR73 (if that helps?)
The computer really works like a champ most of the time. After running the computer for a short period of time (5-10mins) if you move the screen to re adjust the angle or just move the computer and the screen jiggles the screen goes black. If you look close in the right light you can still see the desktop and everything works fine, which I am assuming is a backlight issue. However, if you close the lid and let the comp go to sleep for 30secs - 1 min and than open it back up it boots right back up and the screen comes on just as bright as it should be and again if you jiggle the screen it goes dark again.
At first I was thinking that the CCFLs were bad but after researching a bit it seems that those guys either go out and never come back on, or work fine. I have thought about a loose connection but if that was the case you would assume that if you kept jiggling the screen than it would come back on, right??? Also it wouldnt make since because it all works like normal once you close the lid for a min or so.
Any thoughts???? I am pretty technically inclined and am not afraid to tear this bad boy apart. I work on BMWs for a living...
Let me know what your thoughts are and any possible fixs and also if you know of a good place to buy parts if I need them and also if there is a walk through on the web that you know of.
Thanks so much to all of you that read and I wish the best to you in the new year.
    Thanks, Jack.

    jjp,
Well like S.U. says, it sounds like the inverter cable. Typically this breaks near the hinge point. I've repaired two like that. I found the open by continuity testing from the inverter board to the plug on the logic board. Once I found the open cable I could make it come back by pushing it together at the break point. I then opened it up, re soldered it and used shrink tubing to re insulate the break point. I then reinstalled the coil flex or silver sleeve and put it back together.
The danger in having an open there is that it can short out and kill the inverter driver (for want of a better word). If you're lucky it will just take out the fuse in that area. I repaired one like that and had no idea what that fuse was (read open) but compared it to another one that wasn't burnt and bridged it with a .125 (I think) fuse filament.
BTW if you need good take apart info email me.

  • Tecra A2 backlight issue - image is very faint

    Hi
    I have a Tecra A2 with a backlight problem.
The LCD is displaying correctly, but without any backlight the image is very faint.
When the laptop is booted the display lights up perfectly for about 3 seconds before turning off. The laptop successsfully boots and can be used with an external monitor. If I now close the lid the laptop backlight lights up again for a few seconds before going off again. I have tried a new backlight inverter which had no effect. The lid closed sensor is the magnetic type (presumably a reed relay) and measures 100Kohms when open? and 0 ohms when closed.
Could this 100K be the problem?
Has anyone experienced any of these symptons or does anyone have any backlight inverter data, i'm wondering if I have a second faulty inverter.
Could this be a faulty FL backlight issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    You are right Philip.
For me it looks like the faulty FL-inverter too
You said that the display on the external monitor looks fine. So we can eliminate a GPU fault.
I think your should contact the ASP in your country. The technician should check the faulty part (probably FL inverter) and should replace it with a new, compatible one.
    >i'm wondering if I have a second faulty inverter
I see you have already replaced the one FL inverter and the issue still appears hmm to be honest I believe you have used a wrong one but who knows nothing is impossible.
So ask the ASP technician for the further handling
    Best regards and good luck

  • Unibody Macbook display issue and keyboard backlight issues while booting

I have a 13" aluminum macbook which has been having some issues when booting up. The machine seems to be booting just fine all the way up to the log in screen. The display is normal and everything seems fine. After I log in, the various pieces of the screen start to display (desktop icons, menu bar, etc) and my wallpaper is visible. After a few seconds, the display seems to degrade and the wallpaper image is visible but distorted. It is almost as if the machine is in some sort of safe mode (pardon the windows reference).
Normally, I have my macbook connected to an external display and external mouse/keyboard. After a reboot, this issue occurs. If I put the macbook in sleep mode, and then wake it by clicking the external mouse, the display reappears normally and everything is fine.
The problem is when I am NOT connected to these external devices. The screen stays distorted (like it has lost its full color range) and there are other issues. The keyboard backlight seems to be disables and highlighting text does not work normally. I have tried rebooting, removing the battery and rebooting, resetting the SMC, removing recent applications (chrome, quicklook, etc.). Has anyone heard of or experienced this behavior?
    Thanks.

Have you called Applecare? If you sent the machine in and it came back with a cracked case, that seems like an Apple repair to me.
As for the display issue - I think I would accept it and move on. Unfortunately, with these ever-higher resolution displays, we have more dead pixels. Since no one would pay $3000 for a display with 100% no dead pixel guarantee, Apple has to alot for a few dead pixels being acceptable inorder to keep prices reasonable.

Check with other vendors, this is common practice with LCDs (even HDTVs).

  • Macbook pro 13" running moutain lion keyboard backlight issue

Is anyone experiencing the same problem? I've upgraded my macbook pro (mid 2009) to Mountain lion and then the keyboard backlight doesn't work now. I've browsed around for solutions suggesting to uncheck the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" found in System preference > keyboard section, but this options doesnt exist for me. Please help. Many thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Free upgrades to Mountain Lion already ended, so now you have to pay to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. I recommend you to return the MacBook Pro and get another one with Mountain Lion if you want. Another option is to wait until Apple launches Mavericks and upgrade to that version

  • Possible Retina Macbook Keyboard Backlight Issue?

This just happened to me about 20 minutes ago.
I was sitting in my room reading up on some news articles when I noticed that some of my keys on the keyboard were dimmer than the rest. I turned the backlight off and back on again but the problem persisted. I then whacked (Not too hard) the keyboard and noticed they flashed back to their original brightness and then went back down. After a few more hits they came back on. Should I be concerned about this issue?
