Macbook HDMI cord TV sound hook up problem

I just bought a 2 cords to hook up my Macbook Pro to my TV. I went to best buy and they told me that the mini display port to HDMI adapter by rocket fish linked with they DYNEX High Speed HDMI cable cord should allow me to view my computer on my TV with audio. I went online and searched how to set it all up. I was able to get my computer screen to show on my TV but when i go to the sound in system preferences and go to output there is no option for the tv. How could i get my computer to recognize my Samsung HD TV and get audio to the TV instead of coming out of my computer? This is what is showing up in my sound system preferences

If you connect the 5,5 MacBook Pro using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort on the MacBook Pro doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with the HDMI input plug since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
Here's the various types of Mini DisplayPort adapters on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_sc_2_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mini+ displayport&sprefix=mini+displayport&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amini+displayport
You'll also need audio cables. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=macboo k+audio+cable&sprefix=macbook+audio+cable&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amacbook+audio+cable

What model and year is your MacBook?  Some older MacBooks don't support Audio out via miniport/HDMI (the display miniport is video only).

  • Why does my Vizio hdtv say no signal when I connect my minidisplay port to hdmi cord between my macbook pro and tv?

My Vizio hdtv says "No Signal" when I use my mini displayport to hdmi cord. It worked flawlessly for a month but randomly decided to no longer work.
I am using a macbook pro from early 2011 running os x Lion 10.7.5 and a thunderbolt to hdmi cord. The cord has worked without a hitch the numerous times I've used it until recently. Now plugging it in will cause the macbook to flash blue quicker than normal and immediately go back to the normal screen. I know the macbook recognizes the TV because changing the input on the TV to the hdmi connected to the computer will cause the macbook to flash blue again, with the same result. The TV remains unresponsive. I have tried all combinations of turning on and off the TV and macbook with the cord plugged in and unpugged from either and both systems and in both hdmi inputs on the TV. I've changed the display resolution to every possible option with no result. The TV is not recognized as a display on either the Display section of System Preferences or the Sound section.
It confounds me that the cord should work flawlessly until now, a month after buying it, for no apparent reason. I've been gentle with the cord, so the problem being a result of damage is unlikely. I had not updated my computer in any way between the successful and unsuccessful uses of the cord, but I have since updated my computer and the problem remains.
I have searched for this problem on the Internet and have seen others with similar problems, but I have not found a solution that resolves my problem. I hope to avoid having to make any additional purchases.
And a thousand and one thanks to any and all who help.

Do you have gfxCardStatus installed?  Is your monitor set to "Integrated" or "Discrete".  You want it set to Discrete to drive the external HDMI display.
Try resetting the PRAM and SMC

Are you sure you have a good miniDisplayPort to HDMI cable?
Do you have another HDMI display you can test against (your neighbor's HDMI capable TV).
Do you have friend that can test the cable using their Mac and maybe their TV or a monitor that has HDMI input.

Yeah, I'm having the same exact problem - It seems that the thunderbolt minidisplay port is only able to output the analog VGA signal, not the digital signal to support DVI and HDMI. This is a bug that came up after installing 10.7.1. I bought my macbook air with 10.7 on it, upgraded it to 10.7.1 as soon as I got it, so I have never been able to use hdmi or dvi with my macbook air. This is an extremely frustrating problem for me, I used HDMI on a daily basis with my PC. I have spent many hours at the genius bar running diagnostic tests so Apple can get as much information as possible to create a fix for this problem. I have been emailing tech support for 3 or so weeks now, they keep saying that they are working on a fix and it should be out soon, but 10.7.2 has come and gone and I still have no HDMI functionality with my MacBook Air!

  • Macbook Pro, TV, HDMI cord

I've connected my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.8.5) to my TV using an HDMI cord before, but it isn't working for me now. When plugged in, the airplay mirroring box is checked. Under System Preferences > Displays, only two tabs are given: display and color. Please help.

sorry for long reply,  girlfriend, was keeping me busy
    here you go..
go to the Displays system preferences; you should see a button called Detect Displays, which if clicked, will attempt to configure any new devices.
Unfortunately if you are using OS X 10.8, you may not be able to find this button in the system preferences, but it is available if you need it. To use it, simply hold the Option key with the Displays system preferences open, and the Detect Displays button should appear at the bottom of the window.

  • Why do i not get sound on my tv when I'm linked with an hdmi cord from apple

I purchased an HDMI cord from apple and was told I would get sound thru my TV.
No sound from tv, only from my computer

Starting pretty much the same time as when the thunderbolt came out, if my memory serves me correctly, it should support sound output as well as video. However your adapter you choose to use also plays a part in this. It has to support sound output, and most of the time you have to choose it as a soud output in the system preferences under the sound section. But if you could go to the apple logo and click about this mac and give us more info on your computer we can assist you better .

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro to play sound on my TV correctly?

I got a Mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI cord so that I can watch Netflix, etc. on my Samsung TV screen. I went to Sytem Preferences, then Sound, then changed output to HDMI, so that my computer plays audio through my TV speakers as well. When I use something like Netflix, iTunes or QuickTime, this setup works fine; however, if I try to play videos or soundclips within websites like YouTube or DatPiff, the audio does not play. Why will my MacBook-to-TV audio connection only work for certain sound sources, and not others? How can I fix this problem?

So you're only seeing video via airplay?
How are you trying to access mirroring on the 4S? You need to double tap home button, swipe (left to right) to bring up airplay, tap on it and select Apple TV, only then will you see the mirroring option

  • Mini dvi to hdmi cord and need audio

I have bought the mini DVi to HDMI cord and have no audio. I've researched and just wondered exactly which cord I need to buy. I've read so many but I really want a simply solution.

If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. No MacBook carries audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 with the Mini DisplayPort.
