What are the options to restart and hold key down to perge RAm ? cache
Command (cloverleaf or Apple logo key)-option-escape lets you force quit a misbehaving application without saving its data, and not touching applications that are fine.
Boot with the shift key. That limits the number of drivers at boot time.
If you get a four language screen telling you to restart, that's a kernel panic.
If you haven't already, backup your data.
Then we can isolate why issues are happening.

Thanks!Yes, you need more memory. While 2GB is the minimum for OS X 10.8, many have found that 4GB is needed for general performance. For what you run, you can see this in your page in/outs. Page outs generally should be no more than 10% to 15% of page ins. More than that can really slow the system down as it writes pages of memory to the hard drive while making space for something else to use memory.
OWC and Crucial are two vendors that sell quality memory. Your user guide for your MacBook will tell you how to install the new memory. -

hello all. I'm a new mac user and love it. I got my new MacBook on the leopard debut date. Anyways I just wanted to know where I would go about getting a better ram card for my new laptop rather then the 1 gb one I have now. Another question I have is seeing that I already have a 1gb card already installed can I go ahead and buy a 2 gb card and put it in the empty slot to run both. That way I'm running 3 gb or would that not work. Also can someone give me a good place or a good website to guy it from thanx
If you add a 2 GB stick you will have 2.5 GB of RAM which is OK to run with. That way later on you can buy another 2 GB stick and bring it up to 4 GB. All MacBooks come from the factory with two sticks installed.

My MacBook pro continues to be very slow after downloading Yosemite. It keeps referring to MacBook Pro (2). It's like there are two version running side by side. Any ideas?

macbook pro mid2012 i7 (here is my e-mail adress : [email protected])You should take it to an Apple store or an AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) Carefully inspect the hinge joint and make sure there is no debris that you can see, you can try carefully sliding some sticky tape thru the joint to clear any loose stuff out. But this sounds like there might be more going on here, and the hinge is something that you do not want to fool with.

My lap top is extremly slow. It studders. It kind of sounds like there is a fan inside and it constantly stopping and starting. And, it takes a really long time for it too start up. Whats wrong with it?
Do you have current backups?
Those symptoms could indicate a failing Hard drive. If it dies, all your documents go with it unless you have Backups.
I have had very good luck with physical and battery problem diagnosis at the Genius Bar. Those guys put their hands (and their ears) to these machines, all day every day, and they know immediately what all those sounds mean.

My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Furthermore, when just using safari to watch streaming television, my computer gets really slow, and locks up, and the dock appears blank and I sit here frustrated. Anytime i wake up my computer, my keys don't respond and I've waited at most 3 minutes untill i can type in my password. Even sometimes when i type in my password and hit enter, it takes forever to open up my mac. I have barely used any storage in my macbook, since i only use it for college, and I have run clamscan wiht no viruses showing... Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
