I want to update my OS, but mountain lion needs at least 10.6.... what upgrade should I purchase?

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:

You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

Macbook pro wont sleep after ram upgrade
Hi,
I have a 17" Macbook pro late 2011. I upgraded the ram from 8gb to 16gb last week and now I having trouble with sleep. When the laptop goes to sleep it always to seems to go into hibernation mode. When I open the lid I can only wake the computer by holding the power button for around 7 secs and then it does a restore from the HD. I've tried a PRAM + SMC reset. Also tested the ram and everything seems good. Below is the output from pm set, the console after hibernation restore (filtered for the word 'sleep') and the memtest. Any help would be appreciated.

A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.

CPU will be soldered directly to the motherboard. About the only things possible to upgrade on any Apple laptop are RAM (if not max'd out) and hard drive.

Thank you.If I had to choose just one thing I’d go with 8GB RAM. There’s no way to upgrade memory later so if you buy the stock 4GB RAM model and need more RAM later your only choice is to buy a new computer. Even if you find the 128GB SSD too small later you have alternatives including moving less important files to an external hard drive (music, old projects, and video are good examples). You can also purchase a SD RAM card for the SD slot to store additional files on - I have a flush mount 128GB SD card in mine which is where I store my music and older files. And while it will be expensive you can be fairly certain that eventually an upgrade SSD will become available.
If possible I’d recommend both the 8GB RAM upgrade and the 256GB SSD but as I said, the RAM upgrade really is a must. BTW, I have a huge amount of software on my computer: Creative Suite, Office, and tons more and have no trouble keeping it all within 128GB. What did push me over to make the larger drive a must have is that I also need to run Windows so I have 45GB tied up in Windows and Windows software. (I’m a programming instructor and need to test my assignments for Win and Mac users.) -

My Macbook Pro 4,1 doesn't upgrade to 10.8.
I tried using just the app, but also creating a separate partition with the InstallESD.dmg extracted to it, same with the BaseSystem.dmg, and some other combinations.
I have to mention, that the FireWire on my motherboard is defective, so in my current OS(10.6.8) I have the FW modules removed. I also tried several times to use an image (InstallESD and BaseSystem) with the FW modules extracted from them, but it didn't make any difference. But
When starting up in verbose mode, it hangs after the message:
"ConsiderRebuildOfPrelinkedKernel com.apple.nke.webcontentfilter triggered rebuild"
The last time, using the BaseSystem.dmg with all the packages and such copied from the InstallESD to the root of the drive, it vould hang after initializing the AppleYukon Ethernet adapter with the message:
Ethernet [AppleYukon2]: Link up on en0, 100-megabit, Full-duplex, Symetric flow-control, Debug [796d,6f08,0de1,0200,45e1,4000]
After this it would just hang for half an hour, doing nothing but reacting when I unplug and replug the ethernet cable with:
AppleYukon2 - en0 link down
And when re-plugging, same message as above:
Ethernet [AppleYukon2]: Link up on en0, 100-megabit, Full-duplex, Symetric flow-control, Debug [796d,6f08,0de1,0200,45e1,4000]
I'm slowly getting desperate, because now I'm TWO versions of the OS behind. If anyone has a suggestion that might do the trick, please be so kind... :-)
Note: During verbose boot, is says:

Does this mean it is loading some firewire module somewhere? And if yes, where and how can I remove it? Cause if it does, this might be the culprit...

In ways, Mountain Lion is a more efficient operating system than Lion, however, if you are happy with Lion and it meets all of your needs, there is o reason to change. You can easily enough compare the features of the two and see if you are missing something that is important to you. And then decide if you want to change.

IMMO a 3+ year old machine should remain on whatever is stable, take the risk on a newer machine.
