Macbook OSX 10.7.4 Finder Freezing/Crashing Unusable

My Macbook has been slowing down progressively over the last week and is now virtually impossible to use.
Takes a long time to boot and when it does the finder freezes for long periods before refeshing itself and freezing again.
I have booted in recovery mode and run the 'Repair Disk' utility which finds no problems. I have also Repaired permisions which always finds the exact same cycle of errors with every run.
I would like to do a clean reinstall but have come to a dead end with ways to get the files off the computer and back it up.
If the computer is booted it is now impossible to get eh files off.
In recovery mode when I try to create a 'New Image' it always crashes or gives me an error so I was hoping someone might have soem advice on how to proceed?
The macbook only has USB ports so I don't think I can boot it in Command-T mode and use my other computer to get access to the files.
Run out of ideas here so would appreciate any help.

I had similar problems with my  2010 MacBookPro i5, 2.4ghz after I upgraded to 10.4.7.
slow to start up, freezes, not waking up, beach ball forever......
after googling the problem I came across these 2 sites:
http://gigaom.com/apple/when-to-reset-your-macs-pram-and-smc/
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
They show you how to reset the PRAM and the SMC
I followed the instructions and now my mac is working fine.

  • Mac OSX 10.6.1 Finder Freezing Up

Finder is freezing up on me. It is quite unusual that this is happening
I dont understand what could be causing it. I repaired my permissions and cleared logs and ran some maintenance scripts. It still freezes up. I give it time too like to try and recouperate. still it does this for hours. I even ran a virus scan and nothing viral was found. I am not sure what is going on.. I have just been sending in my error reports and I hope  fixes it.

    Greyson,
Did V.K.'s suggestion work for you?
I'm in 10.6.2, and I'm starting to have periodic issues (maybe once or twice a day) with my disk drives (internal, and both external drives) becoming "unavailable", which essentially freezes up all apps.
In the finder, I can open them and drill into the top level of folders, which I assume have been cached somewhere, but going down any further "hangs". On any Volume attached to my system (includes 3 HDDs, and a Flash Drive).
At first I thought it was because I'd just started playing with HardwareGrowler, but I've disabled that and still have the problem. Then I thought my demo of LaunchBar was it, but I disabled that too.
If I CMD-ESC to quit/relaunch finder, all the windows go away, but finder never comes back.
I'll try to do what W.K suggested, and get back to the list with the results...
    Steve

  • In my MacBook Pro, finder is crashing after logging in. It is showing crash report with Relaunch option, when i click on Relaunch option finder is working properly but i am unable to see top bar(Apple, Date, Wifi). Even in safari address bar not accepting

In my MacBook Pro(10.7.5), finder is crashing after logging in. It is showing crash report with Relaunch option, when i click on Relaunch option finder is working properly but i am unable to see Top bar(Apple logo, Date and Wifi etc... bar). Even in safari address bar, TextEdit not accepting any text means when type something not showing up and also i am unable operate any thing from keyboard. Plz help me…..

One thing that you can try is installing a 'fresh' version of OS X Lion. Boot into your Recovery partition (holding down the command and R keys whilst booting) and elect to install OS X from the Recovery screen. You need not erase your hard drive and you should not lose any of your data.
Oh, and just as a precaution, I would use Disk Utility, once you're in Recovery mode, to verify your hard drive before trying to install the OS again.

  • Lion 10.7.2 Constantly Freezing Crashing on MacBook Pro

I am at my wits end! My MacBook Pro (MacBookPro2,2 2006) is constantly crashing and/or freezing. Everything was perfectly fine until I installed the 10.7.2 update. Then things started to get progressively worse. Now I can't go 15 minutes without the system freezing up or crashing. It crashes 20 times a day or more and is completely unusable at this point. I really need to get work done and don't know what else to do.
It doesn't seem to matter what applications are open. I thought at first maybe it was Safari or Mail but I've had it hang or crash with just the Finder open. Sometimes it just freezes up yet, if iTunes is playing music, the music will continue to play in the background but you can't interact with anything. Sometimes the mouse pointer will still move and sometimes it won't. Sometimes I'll get the spinning beachball of death. Other times it will just instantly restart on its own. A couple times the screen just rolled to grey then died. I never get a crash report that I can post or send to Apple.
I am very technically proficient and have done absolutely everything I can think of at this point including:
    * Resetting PRAM.
    * Repairing disk permissions and running a disk check
    * Ran TechToolPro and everything came back OK.
    * Updated all software and removed any weird kernal extensions.
    * Unhooked any attached peripherals.
    * Tried different networks or switching to wired ethernet.
    * Logged in with Shift key down so no extra software loaded.
The ONLY thing that seems to work is starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key at boot. Which is what led me to think that maybe some rogue kernal extensions were to blame but I removed all but the blessed Apple extensions. Safe Mode loads only the most basic system software so is not very usable. The fact that it runs OK here makes me believe it must be a bug in Apples 10.7.2 update but who knoes what part since so much of the OS is not loaded in Safe Mode.
I've also tried running Apple Hardware Tests (AHT) but can't get it to run for the life of me. I followed another postwhere we copy the .diagnostics folder into /System/Library/CoreServices from the original software discs that came with the computer but holding down the "D" key on startup still doesn't invoke the tests. Won't run off the CD either. I get some weird circle with a slash through it. Going to take it in to the Genius Bar tomorrow and have them run the hardware tests. I'll report back after but I don't feel too sure they're going to have a good answer.
A side issue now is that, after all this, my MacBook Pro takes over half an hour to boot each time. It appears to be doing a Safe Boot no matter what even though I don't hold down the Shift key at startup. I always get the progress bar under the Apple logo and I think it is doing a fschk each time. But when it finally comes up it's not actually in Safe Boot mode. It never used to do this and I can't get it to stop. With all the crashes and now this incredibly long startup each time I'm about to throw this thing out the window.
I've read hundreds of other posts across the Internet with like experiences but no good answers. A lot of people seem to think it is an Nvidia graphics card related issue or a discrete graphics issue but my older machine doesn't have swithable graphics and it's card is ATI. But I do sometimes get strange graphic artifacts on the screen before it crashes and some Apps have lines through their interfaces so I'm wondering if the latest system update screwed up graphics drivers?
I'm posting here in the hopes that someone, anyone, can help me!!! I think Lion 10.7.2 has serious bugs and is one of the worst updates Apple has ever released.
Is anyone else having similar problems and does anyone out there have a solution?!!

FINALLY got Lion to produce a crash report during one of these disasters. Like my gut was telling me this seems graphics driver related. Here it is:

  • OSX Mavericks Finder Freeze

    Hi All,
Like most of you I upgraded to Mavericks within minutes of the release. Everything worked fine and I was pleased to have the new OSX version on my MacBook Air.
Since last night my finder freezes up constantly while the rest of my applications are running fine. I cannot access my NAS via my airport extreme and I cannot access my timemachine disk at all. Better yet all I see when selecting the finder is a spinning beachball........
Anyone got this problem as well, or maybe you have an idea what this could be? Please let me know.

    Hi AppleGeek71!
You may need to try to Safe Boot your computer to see if that resolves the issue:

  • Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro

Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro.
It started with Photoshop, then Safari, and now the Kinect sensor.
Mavericks is the worse thing that happened to me I have a thesis project to work on!
    What can I do?
How can I remove Mavericks and go back to Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

    Hey StephSassine,
First, I would run through these steps:
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk:
    Increase disk space
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10677
If that doesn't work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility:
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.
Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check.
    Click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
via: Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5821
If that doesn't help resolve the issue, you can revert to a previous OS X version:
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14176
    Sincerely,

  • MacBook Pro randomnly freezes/crashes

I have a client (I'm a local tech just getting crash courses in Macs) who's MacBook Pro randomly freezes/crashes. I have ran a disk repair but the issue still persists. He has sent me quite a few different crash reports which I can't make heads or tails over really. They are really long - should I post them for assistance or is there any usual troubleshooting steps needed to be done?
I will post one, but all seem to vary and don't appear to be the same issue...
Please, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Finder freezes/stucks

Usually when i try to open a new window of the finder (checking my USB, files, etc..) the finder freezes (with a beachball) or crashes, so i have to reset it.
I have OSX Lion with all his updates (10.7.1), all apps from store also updated, so i think is related to Lion because in Snow Leopard i never experienced this. My system is a Macbook Pro 2010 15'' Core i7 2.66ghz, 8GB ram and a 128GB ssd (Samsung 470). I dont think is related to low ram or performance because i have like 4-5gb ram free except when i work with Photoshop, VM or Starcraft 2.
Seriously they need to resolve some bugs with the system because in SL i never had this type of problems, and usually the boot/shut downs take a lot to load (white screen and like a minute waiting to turn off, only a comment: i almost never use reopen windows when i shut down.
    Greetings!

Only a HD, but not ever, usually only when i want to load some photos from my Canon or downloading (my SSD is very tiny for all the big files).
Right now i dont have my HD so i dont think is related to it, because succeeds almost all the time.

  • Finder freezing up constantly

I have the 2008 non-unibody MacBook Pro, and i used to have OSx Lion installed, but it got to the point where most of my programs lagged graphically, whether it was Photoshop trying to render something, scrolling a page in Firefox, or scrolling through pictures in Finder, so i performed and Erase and Install and went back to Snow Leopard. I also have been building a Leopard server on one of my older PowerMac G5s so i have it currently setup as a file server. Ever since i switched back, it seems like everything has been slow with the OS, Outlook frequently crashes, Finder freezes up constantly, especially when i'm accessing the file server and sending files to it, and overall the MBP's performance has dipped since that run in with Lion. Now it's not like Finder relaunches itself, it just freezes up for a time then comes back. It generally happens if i have a few Finder processes running at once, like transfer files amongst volumes, emtpying the trash, and creating folders on the server. I honestly don't think that should even happen, because before i upgraded to Lion, i used to have 4x more Finder windows open than this, and it never had a problem. Could there be something wrong with the computer itself, or is it just getting old?

Oh and as an added note, I was transferring files today, and Finder completely froze up for 15 minutes just in trying to create a folder on my F800 drive, so i tried relaunching Finder, and now it won't even open. I get this error: "The application Finder can't be opened. -10810"

  • IMac Freezing/crashing, please help. Tried everything! :(

    Hello Fellow MacTalkers,
I am writing this post to ask you for a help with an issue that is very frustrating to resolve.
To begin with, I have purchased my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHZ, 3GB, Leopard running notebook about 7 months ago.
Until recently I have discovered that my computer is crashing randomly.
I am not a very tech oriented person, who knows much about console, logs and sorting out the hardware / software related issues.
About 2 months ago I started to experience some random freezes on my computer. Those freezes were occurring on different type of situations so it was hard for me to identify what could be causing the problem. The most common freezing that I have encountered, was and is that my computer screen just freezes and I can't perform any reset or rescue. Simply hard reset.
I started to think that this could be a cause of getting an extra 1GB memory that I purchased from Apple store, and that the memory could be faulty. But just to make sure I have done a clean re-instal of my os. making sure that I have all my permissions everything that could be a "common" cause of any weird behaviors on a mac sorted.
After the reinstall it got even worse.
I decided to take my computer to Apple authorized centre in Sydney broadway NextByte shop.
I explained the problem, asked if that would be possible to check some sort of console logs and track back what could be the cause of the problem that I am experiencing.
I left my computer for 2 weeks in service. And after that 2 weeks they have replied to me saying that they have detected no faulty with the hardware what so ever. I keep on persisting that I understand that the service people have done all the tests on external peripherals, checked the system performance through some kind of testing tools and it resulted with no problem. I rang the Apple complaints department asking if they could do anything about it as I am very worried that this issue won't disappear. They have informed me that there is nothing thay can do and they are basically sending my back home.
I collected my computer 2 days ago and started setting up some programs like adobe and all my apps. At first it was running all well, but then it started (leopard or hardware) to freeze again. On no particular occasion. I had to crashes in 3 hours.
I remembered the time of the crash and after the reboot, I checked my console and here is what I could find:
    12/05/08 11:00:07 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10b260.mdworker[1036]) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault
I don't know if that is related to this post in any way, but as I said at the beginning I have no technical knowledge on where to investigate it further.
I would like to ask you for your recommendation on what should I do next.
I hope there is nothing that I am doing wrong with my computer as I am keeping it organized nad well maintained.
I thought also that that could be overheating related issue so I bought a notebook cooler, but that doesn't seemed to resolve the problem.
I am running out of ideas. Apple won't help me in solving the problem, I am also not sure how should I approach this case from the legal perspective. Can I go to fair traiding institution and ask them for help to enforce apple on returning my money for laptop, should I perform any tasks on my computer to fix the problem with some software.
Help, I am really running out of ideas. I am doing graphic design daily and this problem is driving me crazy.
I would appreciate your feedback or any suggestions on what should I do next.
Sorry for my cracked english. Im still learning my lingo in Australia
PLEASE PLEASE, help me on this one.
    Kind Regards,
    Michael Saganowski

For what its worth, it sounds like the Leopard woes I was having before I left and went back to Tiger. I was in leopard for three months and I had too many problems to list here, but some common ones were Random system freezes/crashes (especially in itunes coverflow), Finder freezing, Adobe CS3 crashing and being generally buggy, not being able to run Final Cut Pro and After Effects at the same time.
My advice to you, check your memory if you feel like it could be the problem. If your memory is OK, then wait for the 10.5.3 update which is supposed to be out really soon (like within a couple of weeks or so from what I hear.)

  • Photo Booth freezing/crashing Mavericks OS. How can I fix this?

I downloaded Mavericks via Apple on November 5.  Before installing it I made sure my Mac system was totally functional: ran disk repairs, checked if I had installed apps that wouldn't run in Mavericks, etc. Everything went well during installation, and I was able to use my laptop for two days UP UNTIL I tried to use Photo Booth! I got a message that Photo Booth was gathering my images (presumably to move it to a new location based on new configuration of Mavericks), and there was also a progress bar. Suddenly I realized that the progress bar would not advance and that my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) had frozen. I restarted it, only to have it freeze upon startup.  I tried resetting the PRAM, and that only allowed me to make it to the desktop, but with no visible hard drive on my desktop, no dock at all, and I couldn't access any of the menus in the Finder window, not even to restart or shut down. Then I tried several options:
Hard reset and tried to boot in safe mode. NOTHING. It was just impossible to safe boot it. At times I'd get up to half of the progress bar and then it'd freeze. Hard reset Command + S
    Hard reset Command + V
Hard reset and reset the PRAM again, etc.
Eventually I'd  make it to the desktop, the dock would show up, also the files on my desktop, but it'd not take longer to freeze again. It was all very odd because there was always a point when it'll would just freeze.
Then I decided to try Command + R to repair disks. I Verified and repaired the discs. Then I restarted, and it froze. I decided to reinstall the OS through the Recovery mode screen. I did it. No success the problem persisted. I redid all this last steps again: Command + R, verify/repair disks, reinstall OS X. Once completed: MBP froze. The whole process was so time consuming that I gave up and just turned off my computer. The next day I was able to turn my computer on with success. Some of the folders that were open before the Photo Booth crash were on open. I closed everything and turned my MPB off using the Finder menu. Then I turned it on again, and once I got to the desktop and found no folders open, and I reopen Safari because I remember I was using it before opening Photo Booth. To my surprise it opened and all the pages I was visiting before the crash were there as if Safari resumed just how it was before the crash. I turned it all off again using the Finder menu. I was wondering if those Safari and the folders that were left open were for some reason conflicting with the system's start up. Then I turned it on again and this time I proceed to work with my computer but not before verifying/repairing the disks through the System Preferences menu.
Everything went well. Later that day I decided to open Photo Booth to see if it'd work smoothly. It didn't open very smoothly but I was able to play around with it for a while. I turned it off and everything was great. The system was a little slower than what I was used to but I guessed it's because Mavericks demands a more advanced hardware. Then the next day the problem restarted!!! I was able to get to my desktop normally and decided to open Photo Booth to complete the task I wanted it to use it on the day of the first freeze/crash. And it froze my computer and it all restarted. This time, even redoing all the steps and even after reinstalling the system 3 times, I still can't get my computer to work. But at least one thing I know: this problems is being caused by Photo Booth! I'm desperate and I don't want to format and do a clean install because I will lose some important files. Does any of you have ANY idea of what's going on and what can I do to fix this? It's unnerving to have it fixed once (not knowing how) and suddenly find myself dealing with the same problem again!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • External hard drive causing finder to crash

    The problem in a nutshell:
On 2 different occasions today, trying to open the hard drive folder (after not accessing the EHD for a couple hours) caused Finder to crash and my Macbook hung on shutdown - I had to unplug the USB hub or do a forced manual shutdown. When restarting the computer, my computer couldn't read the hard drive - I did find a way to fix that (see details below).
I don't know why this is happening in the first place or whether this indicates a bigger problem. Thus far, all data on these drives is backed up elsewhere, but I want these drives to be my backup (aside from DVD hard copies, of course). If anyone knows what may be causing this problem, I'd appreciate your help, thanks!
    My system:
I have an early 2008 Macbook with OSX 10.6.8 and 4GB RAM.
Last week I bought two identical Hitachi DeskPro 3TB USB hard drives -- call them External HD A & B --, connected to my Macbook via a USB hub that has its own power source. The EHDs have their own power sources as well. All power sources are plugged into surge-protected power strips. (The EHD B is a cloned copy of the EHD A using backup software).
Each EHD is divided into 3 partitions.
In System Preferences, I did NOT choose to have the hard drive(s) go to sleep whereever possible.
Both EHDs run cool - I've never seen any sign of overheating.
    Details of What Happened:
Both times, I was actively using my computer but hadn't accessed the EHD for a couple hours or so.  Both times, only EHD A was present in the Finder. (EHD B was physically plugged in, but ejected from Finder, as is my ususal practice.)
Upon restart, I got a message that "a drive plugged into this computer cannot be read", giving me the option to Initialize, Ignore, or Eject. Restarting my Macbook (with one or both EHDs connected) didn't make a difference.
Neither drive showed up in Disk Utility, but they both showed up in System Profiler under USB, albeit with much fewer details than when the drives are showing up normally. The scanner attached to the USB hub has worked just fine.
Both times, the solution to the undetectable EHD problem was to plug in the drive's power source directly into the wall socket and the drive would promptly show up on my desktop. (It doesn't matter whether I plugged the USB directly into my Macbook or kept it plugged into the USB hub.) Once I do that, I can eject the drive, plug it back into the power strip, and it works just fine. I verified the drives in Disk Utility both times and they tested ok.

I'm replying to my own post here since it's far to late to update the original message: To update: after more than 6 months, I can verify that the solution given at bottom of my original post (plugging the drive directly into a wall socket) has worked every time, both in the US and in Asia.  I have no idea why this is so, just that it works.

  • RMBP freezing / crashing (not chrome related)

Hi, about 3 weeks ago my rMBP started to freeze randomly and i couldn't find anywhere on the internet nothing related to that, only the chrome / mountain lion conflicts, but... i'm not using google chrome, so why's that? This last freeze I got the log from the moments between the freeze, i'm hoping anyone here could help me with this by looking at the reports. thanks!

    1. Saving PSD's / Smart Objects.  Most of the time, whenever I try to save a PSD or smart object in PS, it prompts me with an error that says:  Could not save "..." because the file already in use or was left open by another program.
This frequently occurs becasue it is being used someplace else.  It could be Bridge that is trying to build the cache, or it could be Windows indexing files.  Many turn Windows indexing off for this reason.
    2.  Freezing / Crashing.  I have never experienced photoshop freezing or crashing as much as I have with this update.  This happens during save (when it actually does save.) Though it only happens rarely, it happens enough to get me into some trouble when I loose all the work I have done since the last save.  (Happened 4 times in about 16 hours of use)
Are you saving over a network?  Best to save locally and copy to network.
Also, CS6 puts a lot of stain on GPU driver.  For ATI the best driver is 12.8 and 13.3 v 6 beta (not sure if this is out of beta or not).  The ones inbetween are not so good.
Note, if PS crashes it will save a copy on scratch disk if you have this option turned on in preferences.
If it actually crashes, as opposed to freezing, check out the Event Log and look for Faulting Module.
