MacBook Pro "15 2011 model has started crashing. Symptoms: screen distortion/images fragmenting/blue screening. Help!

Hi everyone!
I currently own a Macbook Pro '15, 4gb that was purchased in early 2011 running Snow Leopard (my version is currently 10.6.8). For under the past 3 year it has been heavily reliable, and I have not ran in to any software, or hardware issues. However, over the past 3 or so months I have been having issues.
During May 2014 through to present date I have started experiencing screen glitches. It first began with image distortion, causing the whole system to crash, which would mean I would have to turn it off and reboot the system. Later this turned into a series of screen blurring (consisting of images fragmenting all over the place) and then finally followed with 2 weeks of blue screening on start up, meaning that I could not get into my log user unless I entered safe mode. I should also mention that I have no third party issues.
After doing some considerable research on apple forums I did what had to be done. In the last two weeks I have wiped my MacBook Pro, re-installed the OS and considered that it was now a process of elimination. For the first week the software seemed to been running smoothly, I wasn't having any failings until I hit the second week – of course, the glitches began all over again and I faced two in the space of a half hour (first my screen split into two during listening to music on spotify with no other applications open in the background, shortly after rebooting I faced a much worse case of my Mac completely dark blue screening with white lines.)
Now, once again, it only works 'well' on safe mode. I did a check in both modes. Left my computer idle with no programmes running for a half hour and the same thing happened with the screen, went black for a moment, moved the mouse and I received a fragmented screen again. I'm completely fed up at this point, considering I have the bare minimal amount on my Mac, I honestly can't fathom how it's come to this.
Now considering my model is not even three years old at this stage you can fully understand my frustration since I heavily rely on my laptop for educational purposes, which is making it very difficult to be able to concentrate on any of my studies. If anything, it is causing a great deal of stress. With my product being out of warranty I don't have an obscene amount of money to pay for a new one. When I already paid roughly £1,699 for the product in the first place.
The worst thing is, I've even done a EtreCheck, this was yesterday (the most recent/last time it was in use)

I've had a look to book an appointment at the Genius Bar, but would you believe it, there are no available appointments at my local store! I really would appreciate if anyone could offer any assistance in how to lodge a formal complaint? My days rely on being able to do my work, so whilst I have tried to book a reservation I am at a loss, and pretty much screwed having a Mac that I clearly cannot use functionally.
If anyone can provide any help, I'd be absolutely most grateful!

I have done what you suggested. However, I have to disagree with you about the 'third party' comment. Although those minor issues were on there which I picked up on shortly afterwards, they were easily removed. It hasn't CHANGED the symptoms I described about my mac. Both items are removed (growl only tends to make your mac 'lag' and that's not the problem I'm having)
I am still having all the above issues, regardless of my mac being fully minus third party items. This mac hasn't had any heavy use, or had many applications installed on it ect, there is really no reason for it to be failing. I'd understand if it was old, but it's literally only just passed being 3 years old.
If you can provide any more help that would be appreciated, thank you!

  • Macbook Pro (Late 2011 model issue)

I purchased my Macbook pro (late 2011 Model) a couple of months back, towards the end of last year. Staright after i had purchased it, and had got it delivered i experienced cracking and clicking noises coming from within the Hinge of the Macbook. And got it replaced for a brand new one as i was still within the 2 weeks prior to purchase, as the apple policy states i was eligible to get a new if i had any problems. So i did. And the brand new replacement macbook pro that i have NOW has the same problem. Ever since i got the other one replaced THIS ONE has the problem or rather much worse, Cracking and clicking noises everywhere whenever i handle the notebook or carry it there is cracking noises everywhere. Whenever i open and close the screen lid, UP or Down. There is loud clicking noises coming from inside, sounds like something is breaking. This is totally unacceptable. First macbook had issue, replaced it, And now replaced Macbook pro is much worse. Since i had it replaced i havent had time to come bring it in. It still bears the same preoblem and is getting worse!

You're just going to have to take it into your local Apple Store. They won't replace again but you're still within your one-year warranty so they will certainly repair. I have the same model and have not have any of the problems that you describe.

  • My macbook pro i7 (2011 version) has a loud fan and high cpu % when I have Skype on or when I am on Safari. Help please!

My macbook pro i7 (2011 version) has a loud fan and a high cpu % when I have Skype on or when I am on Safari. My laptop would sometimes freeze for a while and it is usually hot. Has anyone else encounter this problem and know how to fix it? Thanks!

Skype is a very resource intensive activity...it has been reported on here users are seeing cpu temperatures on the order of 80-85 °C, within the limits of the cpu, but still hot to the touch.
Make sure nothing else is running so you keep the thermal load down.

Installing RAM in a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro
There is really only one way to install RAM into a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro and while there are hundreds of DIY videos online, I just like this one, found on YouTube, by “macmixing”.
Note that there is a difference in the RAM that should be used in 2011 and 2012 models.
    2011 models must use:
    •204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    And 2012 models must use:
    •204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    So here's the video:
Remember that the 13", 15" and 17" 2011 models (early or late) and the 13" and 15" mid-2012 non-Retina models can handle 4GB, 8GB or (unofficially, but, believe me, it works) 16GB of RAM. There are, in my opinion, only two 100% Mac-compatible vendors out there: Crucial and OWC. I really can't recommend any other brands, even though it may work, as these are the only brands that I've personally used in quite a while. Also remember to stay away from any RAM that is a “value” brand - Macs are picky about RAM and often these value RAM modules just don’t work very well.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

I changed my wireless broadband to a landline-base DSL wifi and it works like a charm. Sun was the culprit even you fiddle with its router and disable firewall, it won't work.
try changing yours too and let me know how it goes.

  • Windows Refuses to boot from 2 brand new Macbook pro 13 2011 model laptops

    I'm having the same problem.
I bought a macbook pro 13inch 2.3 ghz core i5 base model yesterday. I gave it the normal windows partition as i normally do with all my macs and tried to install Win7.
The installation was ok except that it took the macbook pro like 40 seconds to finish showing the Black screen with the blinking cursor .
I then Installed Bootcamp 3.2 and restarted, it took its normal 40 secs to show the black screen and blinking cursor after i had selected windows to boot and then it restarted!
I tried 4-6 times but it keeps giving me the same result.
I then reformatted 4 times both the Windows and Mac partitions and tried to repeat the windows installation but it kept giving me the same result.
A friend of mine bought his macbook pro 13 base model today and when i tried installing, it gives the same result! What is wrong?
I then installed Parallels 6 on both laptops and immediately it booted the already installed windows partition.(*but i don't want to use parallels )
But when i restart and hold down the option key and choose windows, it keeps giving me the black screen with the blinking cursor and the restarts itself.
I have used 10 or more macbook pros and airs in the past and they've never given me this sort of problem.
    What is wrong???

Having Windows on GPT and EFI; not having default OS set to Windows.
Having boot options in msconfig set to default (30 seconds) instead of reducing to 5 seconds (if present, it may not be).
40 seconds is slightly longer I guess for you than OS X but people with trouble are reporting 1-4 minutes. I think 40 is in normal range.

  • On my new 15" MacBook Pro (June 2011) using Calendar I click the  corner arrow to enlarge the screen.  Now it is MORE than full size.  No arrow visible to return to small size.  Menu bar can't be grabbed.  I sweep and get back to desktop. No small screen?

I can sweep back to the calendar, but can't make it small again.  Menubar options include changing font size, but nothing about reverting to smaller window size.  Any suggestions?

  • I have a mid 2010 macbook pro 15" and recently it started crashing so I took it to my local Apple store to have it looked into and they told me its a graphics card issue requiring the replacement of the logic board at a cost to me of $340.

I took my laptop to my local Apple store to have the problem diagnosed and they told me the problem lies in the grpahics card which will require the replacement of the entire logic board at a cost to me of $340.
after that I did some research on the topic and found that this was a massive problem on this model of macbook pro and Apple never issued a recall to fix the issue, are there any class action suits in this category currently underway? if so how can I join?

I also have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15". Also, I had paid $100 for Apple Developer account and I can't even use Xcode or Unity3D to work on my game because the moment I write a line of code, my computer crashes. Scratch that, I used to have an Apple Developer account (I let it expire a couple of weeks ago). It hasn't been of much use since my Macbook Pro crashes 15 times a day.\
A month after buying a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" directly from Apple, it began to crash. At first, I assumed it was my fault as I had been messing around with Bootcamp and doing other heavy stuff, but I quickly learned it would randomly decide to shutdown regardless of the task at hand. I was very busy at the time. I was a fledgling teacher in France, and I hardly had any time, or money, to put toward a 84 euro train ticket to Paris. Also, OS X updates were around the corner (Lion, Mountain Lion), so I held out, hoping the issue would be resolved with the updates.
During my investigation of the issue, I did find the TS4088 article. It recommended I install some updates, and then it described a problem that seemed similar to my own, but the order in which the problems occured, as described in the TS4088 article, did not follow the same pattern that my computer had been experiencing–there was no gray or black screen after the restart warning message when my mac crashed. The first time I found TS4088 on Apple's Support page (at a time when their product recalls were easier to locate before they redesigned their website), it was a couple of months after I had bought the computer. I reasoned that my Macbook Pro must not be suffering from the same issues as I had never seen the video freeze or go black before seeing a restart message. The restart warning message is the last thing I saw, no loss of video or black(or gray) screen afterwards. My computer would simply start to boot up again.
About two years after buying the computer, and suffering from about 3 GPU panics a day, I searched for the TS4088 article again, wondering if I had misread it, and that maybe the issues described in the article were the same issues I was experiencing. This time I could not find the TS4088 article on Apple's Website. I searched over and over again, but it was nowhere to be found. I assumed that issue had been resolved and the article removed. Now after three years of using a faulty, unreliable computer, I was feeling like a schmuck. I searched again on Apple's website to find the TS4088 article, or any new ones that outlined my very apparent GPU issues, but I had no luck. I circled Apple's website over and over and could not find that article. It was only through a link other frustrated mid-2010 Macbook Pro owners had posted on some other website that I found the link to TS4088, also learning that the forum's users were experiencing my same problems.
Based on the language Apple used to describe the problem, I did not reason that I was suffering the same issue. Here's what happens when my computer crashes:
         • The computer seems to shut down. The display turns off, the fans stop spinning
         • The message "Your computer was restarted because of a problem . . . Press any key to restart" is displayed.
         • I press any key, the computer restarts, I wait for next crash to interrupt my work
    Excerpt from TS4088
    "Symptoms
Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray."
My computer never displays a restart message before the video is lost or display turns black. My Macbook Pro mid 2010 loses the picture on the display, and less than a second after that is the restart warning displayed. The video would never freeze or stop playing, rather the whole computer just dumped all of its processes and displayed a warning message asking me to press any key to restart.
My issues with this problem are the following:
•The problems described in TS4088 do not accurately reflect what users are experiencing. TS4088 is misleading in this respect.
•The article TS4088 was not easy to find on Apple's website. It seemed to have moved to an obscure, impossible-to-find location that could only be found thanks to the great number of other Mac users who are experiencing the same problem.
This issue hasn't been managed dutifully. I'm annoyed to have sunk money into a developer account. I'm annoyed that I sunk money into an expensive product that does not work. I'm annoyed that the description of the issue afflicting mid 2010 Macbook Pros was inaccurately and misleadingly described and that links to the TS4088 article disappeared from Apple's website when I could have truly benefitted from them. I am especially annoyed that my life in graphic design, web development, and iOS development has stagnated for several months as my computer crashes some 15 times a day. I am, however, pleased with the speed at which a Mac can boot up.

Your model has two GPUs or video chips. One is integrated into the processor. The other is a standalone graphic processor. In other words it is "discrete" with respect to the other, integrated graphic processor.
A new motherboard is expensive. Between 3-500 dollars from what I understand. Your local Apple dealer can tell you more.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq 'n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Is it true that sleep consume less power than boot? (MacBook pro late 2011 model)

I have 3 questions here to ask:
    1. Some say that sleep consume less power than boot, but some say it isn't. Which is true? and how it can be?
    2. Is it true that charging your macbook pro until 100% then unplug it will make cycle count go faster than using AC power all day and ONLY using battery when we couldn't find AC outlet will make it slower?
    3. i found that some macbook user leave their macbook charged all the time and some macbook user prefer use battery all the time. Which way is better? i have observed and looked at any apple help topics but couldn't get the answer without any experience from you guys...
I'm so conserned with these issues...
Thank you for your time though, i hope i can find the best solutions here....

Regarding question 1, that's a meaningless question.  Boot uses a specific amount of power, dependent on how much stuff has to start up on your machine and what hardware you have, while sleep uses a trickle over time, so whether this is true depends on what interval of sleeping you're comparing to boot.  There will be a break even point somewhere, but where that might be isn't clear.
Apple recommends sleep over shutdown unless you're going to be away from the computer for a couple days or more.  Of course, I can't find a reference to that document now, but I know it was there at one point in time.  I don't think that the entire issue is power-related, as boot will stress the hardware slightly more (lots of reading from and writing to the hard drive, etc) than sleep.
As to questions 2 and 3, the answer is the same for both.  Your battery lasts for a finite number of cycles before losing capacity.  (How many cycles is a good question, and not an easy one to answer.)  A cycle is defined as going from full to empty, but can be broken up as well.  For example, if you start from full, drain halfway, charge to full again and drain to halfway again, that's one cycle.  So, the more times you charge your battery, the faster it will wear out, but how you do it doesn't matter much.
There are a couple gotchas, though.  First, a battery can wear out prematurely if you never let the electrons "turn over."  You need to use it on battery power sometimes, though it doesn't have to be daily by any means.  Second, if you drain the battery fully, that's not very good for modern batteries.  I wouldn't worry about it now and then, but don't make it a habit of draining it fully.  (Some people erroneously recommend frequently draining the battery fully and then charging it back up to "condition" the battery, but that is not actually good practice.  All Mac portables with built-in batteries do not need conditioning.)
Finally, all this is fairly irrelevant if it interferes with the way you need to use the machine.  Use the machine the way you need to use it, and don't worry so much about adjusting your needs to fit the battery's needs.  If that means you have to replace the battery a little more frequently, so be it.  They're not that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

  • Macbook pro 15" 2010 model has a graphics card issue.

Apple are aware of a fault on the 2010 model of the Macbook pro. This requires a full motherboard replacement. Apple have known about this for a long time and had a repair program running which they didnt tell anyone about. Problem is after 3 years they refuse to fix anymore and the customer now sits with the problem. After spending 6 months trying to find cause of the problem finally found someone at Apple who knew about the program and tested my machine. Fault was confirmed by Apple technician but now Apple refuses to fix as past 3 year mark.
How many other secret issues exist in Apple which you pay a premium price for but get screwed by the supplier. Didnt expect this from Apple.
