Macbook pro 15-inch 2011 vs. MacBook Air 13-inch 2013

Hello. I currently own a MacBook Pro 15-inch, early 2011 model. It has 8 GB of RAM, a quad-core, 2.3 GHz i7 processor, hi-res, anti-glare display, an AMD 6750m and Intel HD 3000. I bought it off of an Apple product store on Ebay about 3 and a half months ago. It was 1,350$. It was in perfect condition when I bought it, and it still is. I'm really into producing music, and I use Reason 6.5. I also do some other small things on my laptop, like word-processing, web-browsing and I bring it to school everyday. I was wandering if I should sell this laptop on Ebay, and buy a brand-new Macbook Air, 13-inch, 2013 model. The laptop is a little thick and heavy, and its battery-life is nothing compared to the MacBook Air. I really value battery-life I would probably upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs, and maybe upgrade the processor to 1.7 GHz, maybe upgrade the SSD to 256, but I might not. I was wandering if this would be a good idea. How much would I be able to sell this laptop for on Ebay? Is the MacBook Air weaker or stronger than the laptop I am using now? Screen real estate is something that matters a lot when using a music program, which is why I initially went for this laptop. Now, since the MacBook Air is smaller, I know that it displays just as much as this laptop does, so I don't think that the screen size would be that big of a problem. I am thinking about saving up for a 27-inch iMac, which would then be my primary machine, but if I were able to buy one, it wouldn't be for awhile. Anyways, Thanks to anybody who can help me!

Nice to see you again.
The macbook Air is 'stronger' than the Pro only in terms of containing MUCH fewer parts, far less to fault, easier to repair
both have unibody aluminum alloy frames.

It will not hurt it as long as you do not leave it on the charger for an extensive period of time (say, days).

  • Macbook air 2014 is 2013 mid?

I bought macbook air in russian apple online store 1 month ago. Now I open settings and see that macbook air is mid 2013...
    Why is that?
    Is it normal?

Weird - I thought I posted an answer to this already. The i7 model wasn't updated, just the core i5 model so it is indeed a mid 2013 computer.
It's a bad idea to include personal information - like a computer serial number - in your post. I've asked a moderator to edit the post to remove it.

  • Macbook Air 11" mid 2013 battery

My macbook air 11" mid 2013 serial # C02KTARJF5N8 is showing only 4:30 hrs on the battery meter at the top on a full charge and is advertized to last for 9 hr

I would suggest going into the apple logo, selecting about this mac, more info, then system rpoert, from there you will see power. Click on this and It will show a charge remaining and cycle count, ring apple with this info and they will tell you if theres a problem straight away. It will alsow show the condition and you will find out more info there. Also if your running RAM heavy apps this will effect battery life, but if theres a fault you will see it there. Any issues ring apple and they will tell you if theres an issue hope this helps

  • Macbook Air 13inch 2014 or Macbook Pro 13 inch 2013?

I need a new laptop for just high schooling(year 10) needs; I am not going to be running any graphic intensive programs. Mainly for internet use, notes and entertainment (I don't game much). I may need to edit some videos for my school; this shouldn't be too complex just putting together some clips and text. I understand that the new Air with 8gb ram, 256gb & probably 1.4ghz i5 should be enough to satisfy my needs but am not too sure and need reassurance. I am spending my own saved up money, so kinda a big deal to me.
Should I upgrade to i7 with 1.7 ghz processor?
    Will 256gb be enough?
Will an older macbook pro be a better option?
Should I wait for the new processor to come out?
    Thanks a lot in advance

    > I am a case manager and personal assistant so I use my computer alot for Word Office, note taking, internet, etc.
With that workload the MacBook Air is a better choice.  It is lighter and has a longer battery life.
    > Also is there a major difference between the the 13 inch Air with 128GB storage and the 256GB storage?
There are no differences except for the obvious: SSD size and price.
When you configure a MacBook Air you need to decide on how much RAM and SSD to purchase.  They cannot be changed once you order the Mac.
The 8 GB RAM option is only $100 so most people choose that option because 8 GB of RAM will help extend the usable lifetime of the machine and in case you find you need to run a large-memory application.
The $200, 128 or 256 GB SSD decision is a bit harder.  How much space do you use on your MacBook Pro now?  Over time, will those storage needs grow?  Do you plan to start using it for more media such as music, pictures or movies?  Will your storage need (now an in the future) fit comfortably in 128 GB or would that be too small or a tight fit?

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • My Macbook Air 11" (mid 2013 upgraded with Yosemite 10.10.1) freezes at 30% or 50% when booting.

I have tried SMC and PRAM resets at boot up but still have the problem.
I can start in safe mode OK.
    Any ideas welcome.
    Thanks

  • MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013 Display go Blank

I have set my MacBook Air Energy Saver setting to its default settings...
When its go on standby mode then i click/swipe on trackpad immidiately , Display going blank but keyboard Is working.
And if i wait 10 to 15 sec after standby then there is no issue.
Please Advice me how to fix it

If you take a look at these (very lengthy) threads, you will see this is a widely reported problem, for which Apple have yet to produce a solution.  It is said that they are working on a firmware update that will address it but this has been talked about for a long time and still no update.

The current "solution" (which is not a solution) given by Apple is to set sleep mode to 'never', or to wait a few secconds after sleep before waking the MBA, or install the free App 'Caffeine" which allows you to manually activate sleep and wake.
Some persons have claimed a "bare metal restore" of the operating system resolved the problem but others have tried this without success.

  • If i purchased a new macbook air in september 2013 will i get iworks and ilife for free ?

    normally apple give 2 months

I had iWork 09 installed from physical copy and I tried to buy Page 2013 for 18€.
The appstore took my 18€ and let me download page (obviously), numbers and keynote for free as an update for my previous apps from iWork 09... *** ?
I didn't want to pay anything because I own a Macbook Air (bought in september) but they already took my money :'(

  • Why does the wifi keep disconnecting on the Macbook Air (Bought September 2013) ?

Is this only my MacBook Air, or is it with everyones. The wifi keeps getting disconnected and i would have to switch off and then switch on the wifi in order to reconnect.

    Hi Ettedos,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing unexpected behavior on your MacBook Air.
I'd recommend starting with the Wireless Diagnostic built into Mavericks:
OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 or later
Use the Wireless Diagnostics application included with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 and later to identify and resolve Wi-Fi issues. For further information, please see About Wireless Diagnostics.

  • Issue with iTunes view for podcasts with the latest iOS update (for my Macbook Air, Sept 21, 2013)

I just got the latest update for iOS for my Macbook Air - and now all of my previously deleted podcast episodes are showing up as available for download from the cloud - which is clogging up my iTunes display.  How can I get these previously downloaded, listened to, and deleted episodes off of my podcast view/list?

"Not only did it download a new version of itunes, but it also downloaded MS Word updates, and other software that required updating."
MS Word is not an Apple product so it could not've downloaded with all the Apple software updates.
"I clicked File > Check for Updates"
What program were you running to do that?
In any case boot from your OS installer disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Uility.
