MacBook Pro 15-inch Early 2011 vs MacBook Air 13-inch 2013
Hello. I currently own a MacBook Pro 15-inch, early 2011 model. It has 8 GB of RAM, a quad-core, 2.3 GHz i7 processor, hi-res, anti-glare display, an AMD 6750m and Intel HD 3000. I bought it off of an Apple product store on Ebay about 3 and a half months ago. It was 1,350$. It was in perfect condition when I bought it, and it still is. I'm really into producing music, and I use Reason 6.5. I also do some other small things on my laptop, like word-processing, web-browsing and I bring it to school everyday. I was wandering if I should sell this laptop on Ebay, and buy a brand-new Macbook Air, 13-inch, 2013 model. The laptop is a little thick and heavy, and its battery-life is nothing compared to the MacBook Air. I really value battery-life I would probably upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs, and maybe upgrade the processor to 1.7 GHz, maybe upgrade the SSD to 256, but I might not. I was wandering if this would be a good idea. How much would I be able to sell this laptop for on Ebay? Is the MacBook Air weaker or stronger than the laptop I am using now? Screen real estate is something that matters a lot when using a music program, which is why I initially went for this laptop. Now, since the MacBook Air is smaller, I know that it displays just as much as this laptop does, so I don't think that the screen size would be that big of a problem. I am thinking about saving up for a 27-inch iMac, which would then be my primary machine, but if I were able to buy one, it wouldn't be for awhile. Anyways, Thanks to anybody who can help me!
Sky Sailing
Is the MacBook Air weaker or stronger than the laptop I am using now
Its stronger in alloy form factor, slim design with only ONE moving part, no HD to crash from mechanical failure of impact etc.
Ive got an Imac and current Air, and owned several Air, the air is the hands down choice for myself and I wouldnt part with it for any amount of money. Also own a couple macbook Pro, new and older one i rebuilt.
Here is an excellent video comparison between the 11” I5 vs. I7 2013 Macbook Air.

Macbook Air:
Only one moving part, ultrafast boot time SSD, the full power of laptop with the weight of an Ipad (close).
Air is the only Mac that has Haswell, 802ac wifi, and incredible 12hr. batt life in 13" I5. HOWEVER NOW the new Pro have 802ac wifi
Recommend buying the Air with 8gig Ram.
Pack around a regular laptop around about 20 days, then an Air, .....after that the standard laptops stays at home.
Only one moving part, the fan. No moving HD heads to crash or moving platters. Runs a LOT cooler than anything else out there (which = durability). Heater is a killer on a scale of 10X over that of accidents.
Also the AIR has far fewer parts to fail inside than a standard laptop. Really only a few replacement parts
The speakers on the Air, contrary to what most people would assume, are much louder than on the macbook Pro.
The Air in general is faster due to the SSD, also if you have a 802ac Router (i.e. Airport Extreme) then the Air over wifi is a LOT faster.
If youre going to be dragging a notebook around campus all the time, the Air makes things a lot more lovely.
The FINAL consideration of course is your application USE, and needs regarding same (see specs and video above)
The new Air, NOW with Mavericks is just 'king of the hill'. Nothing touches it

I have recently found out that my MacBook Pro 15.4 early 2011 model the FaceTime HD camera is not loading or is missing.
I have performed VRAM reset PRAM reset and also looked for third party software from AirDisplay and this software is not installed. I have also performed reinstalling the combo pack for 10.9.2 still nothing. But going through my extension I did find that isight is listed and it status is not loaded.I also checked my usb and I don't see FaceTime HD camera listed. I do have automater on my Mac not sure if this would cause an issuse or not.I also tried other applications like photobooth, Facetime, Camera. Any other advice would be great.my computer has not been able to connect to my built-in camera
iSight is the built-in camera.

Hi. My question is pretty much as the heading says :
Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?
As far as I can tell from googling and searching around, it does appear that it is safe to do so.
Specifically this page
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2346
But I just wanted to double-check for confirmation that it is indeed safe to use the adapter from such an old mbook pro in a newer one.
The wattage is the same.
I wish to do so as I prefer the T-connector, and my older adapter has a much longer extension cord on it.
If not I may order another one from ebay.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
Thanks for your help.Benway1 wrote:

Yes.
I recommend you buy one directly from Apple. There are many counterfeit power adapters on the market that could damage your MacBook Pro or potentially cause a fire.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
Nearly all of them are, even if the seller insists it is "genuine OEM". Legitimate adapters from eBay are likely to be used, not new. There is nothing wrong with used, as long as you know what you're getting.
Identifying a counterfeit is possible only through close examination. -
Macbook Pro 8,1 (Early 2011 - 13") EFI update not supported
I've been scouring the web for an answer but can't seem to find a solution to this.
I need to do a hardware test on my MBP early 2011 - 13" as I've been facing boot issues with the prohibit icon (circle w/ slash) and graphics issues with applications being forced to the bottom half of my 2nd display. - When I try booting while pressing 'D' nothing happens and startup resumes normally.
I found that because I've upgrade the OS to Yosemite AND don't have the original boot disks or USB, my only option is to download the EFI firmware here: MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.7. When opening the package I get an error message that my system doesn't support it... (below)
Is there any other way that I'm able to do a hardware test to diagnose this problem? Any help would be amazing!!!I finally determine the problem to be google drive! Thank God I didn't spend money on repairs!
I realized I had never checked the crash log on my mac. I searched the web for the error code I received and found someone with a similar problem who said uninstalling google drive fixed the problem.
In safe mode (which always worked fine) I tried to connect google drive (it hadn't done it automatically because of safe mode) and immediately received the lock up and 3 beeps. this is not listed in the normal startup items so didn't even remember I had it running.
anway I managed to get it disconncted and deleted it and so far I have been fine!
Since then I have done some searches and found several threads with people have the same problem with the latest update to google drive!
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/drive/NVy9cxgkL_g
So hopefully someone else who has this problem sees this and doesn't spend hundreds of dollars replacing their ram, logic board etc. -
Alo, my Macbook pro i7 2 GHz Intel Core i7 (early 2011) will not go to sleep with the power source connected. only enters sleep mode when running on battery. Someone did this happen, and it could solve?
There is no output from that command line? Maybe the pid changed.
I'll repeat what I am trying to find out...
1. You do a pmset -g on the terminal.
2. The output from that pmset should have a line that says "sleep 0 (imposed by n)" where n is some number.
3. The ps ax | grep n is supposed to display what the process associated with n is.
It's the output from step 3 that should indicate what is causing you not to sleep.
But speaking of sleep, that's where I am going. -

Do I still have to calibrate my macbook pro battery? (early 2011)?
Hi, I recently got my first mac computer which is a macbook Pro. I was really excited when I got it but I also want to take really good care of it and make it last as long as I can so my question is do I still have to calibrate the battery on my mbp? because I read this article from apple stating that I don't http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1490. Please inform me thank you!
That is the exact article I was going to refer you to.

MacBook Pro 17" Glossy (Late 2011) vs MacBook Pro 13" Glossy (Late 2011)
Hi everybody,
I have bought a MacBook Pro 17" 3 months ago. I really love it and it's cool. A few days ago, one of my friends came to my office, broght his MacBook Pro 13" which he had also bought it a few days after me.
He told me he feels my MBP 17" display is somehow blurry. I compare the two devices against each other. Both of them had glossy displays. But I think he was actually write. I think the MBP 13" display looks a little brighter and nicer.
I have also an iMac 21.5" (Late 2009). As you might know, iMac has a very wide viewing angle. The first time I brought my MBP out of the box and turned it on, I found that it's display is not the same as iMac, and it made me a little sad. Actullay I bought a glossy one, since I thought it works the same as iMac display; but that's not true.
I don't expect a MBP to have a very wide viewing angle, but can I expect it to show me the colors as shiny and beautiful as iMac does?
I think my friend's MBP 13" display looks more beautiful than my BMP 17" and it's so much similar to iMac's diaply than mine is! Is there any possibility that my MBP is fake????? I am not sure about that and don't know what to do!
Do you have any idea? Can you tell me something that makes me sure if my MBP is not fake?
Thank you very much,
Mani HamedaniI found the solution and here it is:
In fact the difference between my iMac and MBP display was due to calibration. Using the expert mode of the Color Calibration in the System Preferences > Display, I calibrated both my MBP and iMac and now there is no issue with colors.
The difference between them is the wide viewing angle of iMac display.
Just remember, calibrate your display to have the best colors depending on the light of the room you are working in. -
I'd like to transfer all data to the new MacBook as seamless as possible. Don't want to reinstall software. Using Migration Assistant in past was successful, but I always used Firewire or Ethernet.
Apple's Thunderbolt cable is too expensive at $49. Wifi is way too slow. (Transfering my 500GBs was going to take over 100 hours.) Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable? That's about the same price as the Thunderbolt cable. Is transfer over USB 2 possible? Would I be better off restoring from my Carbon Copy Clone on my USB 2 external drive?
I do not use Time Machine.Stephen Coles wrote:... Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable?
That's what I used, although I already had the ethernet cable. Just directly connected both machines (after turning off Airport on the old one), no router or anything else, and ran Migration Assistant on both ends. Transfered a user account with about 30Gb data, nothing else. -

Macbook Pro (8,2 - early 2011) freezes/beeps. Safe mode OK.
My MBP (running 10.6.8) just his 3 yrs this month (so of course just out of applecare) and a couple days ago the laptop froze while I was using it and would beep 3 times continually. I was able to do a hard reboot and get back to my desktop but after about a minute it would happen again. I don't get a kernel error and my screen doesn't change - it just freezes.
[Full Disclosure] Not sure if it's associated, but a few minutes prior to this first freeze, I had problems coming out of sleep mode - laptop wasn't waking up, was unresponsive to keyboard, had to hit power button a few times to wake it up. But it did eventually wake without a reboot
I have 2 4GB modules, and they are confirmed correct for my computer, from OWC; they been in there for 3 yrs with no problems.
I have done the following:
1. Ran detailed Apple Hardware Test via DVD - no problems found
2. Ran 2 other RAM tests - Rember and Memtest - no problem found
3. Ran Disk Utility on drive - no problems found
4. Reseated RAM modules - still froze a minute after booting
5. Swapped RAM modules - still froze a minute after booting
6. Removed top module - seemed to work fine, used for 10-15 mins without problem
7. Removed bottom module, put top module in bottom slot - seemed to work fine, used 10-15 mins without problem
8. Tried each module separately in top slot - each time froze a minute after booting
At this point I figured the problem must be with top RAM slot and figured for now I could just run with RAM in bottom slot. Put one of the modules in the bottom, closed up laptop, booted up and it froze within 5 mins. At this point I had mixed up the modules so I dont remember which one I was currently working with. But based on my testing, the problem did not seem associated with the acutal modules.
I then just put both modules back in and did the following:
1. Reset PRAM - still froze
2. Reset SMC - still froze
3. Removed font cache and removed all startup items - still froze
4. Booted into safe mod - NO PROBLEMS. Aside from what is automatically turned off in safe mode, everything worked fine and I worked with my laptop for a good while in safe mode without freezing.
So I'm not sure what to do next. I supposed I'll eventually need to make an appt at apple store but I'm thinking they'll want to replace the logic board which (1) may not be the solution and/or (2) will be very expensive. The fact that it works in safe mode confuses me as it would seemingly point to a software issue - or is that not necessarily true? I haven't installed or changed any apps/extenstions/settings on my computer recently.
Hoping someone here can be my savior. Thanks!I finally determine the problem to be google drive!
What is wrong with my Macbook Pro 13" from Early 2011?
Okay, so I'm currently on Vacation, and I was using my computer, like normal. I then tried clicking, and my trackpad no longer will click. I cannot tell wether it's stuck down or not, but the right side depresses and the left side does not. Any advice?
I bought my Computer in August of last year, so I'm still within the one year warrenty. I'll see if we can stop at one on the way back, since there's none in my area.
