MacBook Pro 17 shuts down without warning
My MacBook Pro 17 inch shuts down without warning, usually in the morning. Entire systems simply shuts off. It will do this 1-4 times in the first two hours (or so) of operation. It restarts fine afterwards, but no telling when it will shut down again. Sometimes the fan powers up to a high speed just before it shuts off ... in seconds ... no time to "save" anything I am working on. Once the machine has been running for about 2-3 hours ... it stays on the rest of the day. It is still under warranty but I can't be without my system for more than a few hours. I have already updated the firmware that was offered as a fix for this at Apple support, no help. I am not running on the battery, plugged in all of the time.
Nothing shows up to be wrong during the diagnostics. A friend who is a PC guru told me what might be happening. He told me to shut down my system before it normally turns itself off. He said that an internal temperature sensor might think the computer is overheating and shutting it down to protect the processor. Makes sense, especially with the fan powering up just before it shuts down. So far, although inconvenient, this is working. He said shutting the system down might reset the temperature sensor. Seems to be working which might mean that some sort of internal sensor is defective. Time will tell, hasn't shut down for over a week now. I posted this in case anyone is experiencing the same issue.

MacBook Pro shuts down without warning.
Hello, I've recently been experiencing some rather strange things with my macbook pro (bought in 2010)...
It keeps on shutting down when there is around 10-15% of battery left, so it doesn't even show me the Low Battery message. When I turn it back on (I have to plug the power adapter otherwise it won't turn on), the date is set to 1.1.2001 (or somehting similar) 1.00am and the computer asks me for a lot of different persossions..
Does anyone have any idea what it is and how to fix it?
Thanks a lot.Hi Sacha_Music,
If you are having unusual battery/power issues and your computer is shutting down unexpectedly, you may want to take a look at the following article about resetting the System Management Controller (SMC):

Macbook Pro Shuts Down without Warning and with Full Battery
I have been having a problem with my Macbook Pro, where it will shut down completely even though the battery is full.
It is a fairly new battery, because I had it replaced back last fall. When it shuts down, my first instinct is to try and turn it back on. When I do this, it starts up normally, goes to the white screen, but then shuts down again...
However, when I wait about a half hour and try turning it on again, it will boot up normally. It also works fine when plugged in.

My MacBook Keeps shutting down without warning
Every since downloading Mavericks I have been having problems with my MacBook Pro. The worst thing is that the computer randomly shuts down without warning. Today this has happended about a dozen or more times. Every time it generates a report that is sent to Apple. I have coppied the first few lines of the report and I have pasted it below, I can post up the full report if need be: if anyone can help that would be great!

thanks very much for the help; the problem only started after I upgraded to Mavericks and started immediately after that. I have seen that there are other problems with my GPU particularly the icons on my desktop decaying. My computer is a mid 2010 CPU, it backs up automatically to our AirPort
In any case here is the full error message:

Can you help me? Thank you.Hi,
I am having the same problem on my Macbook Pro. I only get the issue at home. I use a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter as well as an external thunderbolt display. I actually bought the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter as a replacement for a non-Apple Sitecom USB 3 to ethernet in order to get rid of the random crashes. It did not help! Here is the report:

Mac book pro shuts down without warning
So I have the mid 2012 mac book pro 13 inch and recently its been turning off randomly without warning and I tried resetting the pram and smc and it didnt do a thing plus when I click on the battery icon on top menu bar it usually says service or replace battery but now no error comes up and sometimes it will go from about 0 percent back to 100 percent but the strange part about this whole thing is that when the computer shuts off and I turn it back on the battery is still at 100 percent
You should take it in to an authorized service place for testing/service.

MacBook shuts down without warning during calibration (39% battery power)
My MacBook has been shutting down without warning during recent calibrations (which I've done approximately every two months). Most recently it shut down after 2 hours and 20 minutes on battery power with a battery reading of 39% -- i.e., nowhere close to the 0% of a fully rundown battery.
The result is that:
I'm not seeing the 'low battery' warning dialog before the computer shuts down; and
(ii) I'm not able to save current work and close all applications when the battery's charge gets low, before the computer goes to sleep (because it just shuts down without warning)
Can I do anything about this? Is it just an unavoidable indication of declining battery performance?
My MacBook is 15 months old. Current 'battery information' is listed below.
Thanks. Replies appreciated.
Battery Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4792
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 4790
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 12477
Cycle Count: 23

1. I'm not sure how to match the path you listed re: the '1.3 battery update' to what's on my MacBook. Maybe I just don't understand how to interpret it, but I don't have a root folder (or any other folder) identified as 'MacBook.' When I used Spotlight, I also didn't come up with a BatteryUpdater.bundle. A file named BatteryUpdate2007001.pkg was all that Spotlight turned up.
On my MacBoook my hard drive that I boot from is named Mort's MacBook. Yours may be similar I don't know. It is the drive you boot from. Mines shows in finder as the top level drive. The next level in column view. Then you find the System file and go from there.
If your not sure what you named your drive or which one it is click the apple in the upper left corner and then pick *About This Mac* You then should see *Startup Disk* and next to that the name is what you refer too when you look for the folder path I gave.
2. You recommended resetting the SMC. However, the info file you provided a link for says it shouldn't be "necessary except as a last resort in cases where a hardware failure of the power management system is suspected." Does that accurately describe the condition I reported? Also, the problems listed as possible reasons to reset the SMC don't include the one I posted about.
The reason I suggest resetting the SMC is that your changing one of the components that is controlled by the functions of the SMC. The battery is a big part of the system which the battery update changes. To get it to be sure to recognize the new bundle you reset the SMC. The instructions linked are not all inclusive but if you don't want to reset it that is up to you.
3. Similarly, re: the 1.2 Battery Update, it's not clear to me that any of the listed 'symptoms' of a faulty battery apply in my case -- unless what I reported indicates a "+low charge capacity/runtime+." Does it?
The battery update instructions are again not all inclusive. If you don't want to do it that is fine. All I know is you have a MacBook Pro update installed at the moment. You don't have a MacBook Pro. This suggestion of mine has helped many people with problems as reported by you. You do not have to do anything you don't want. That is your choice. Is your battery cutting off at 39% considered normal operating or capacity to you? I personally would call it a faulty battery, but thats just me.
What would be your definition of a faulty battery?
4. Apparently, you had a faulty battery which Apple replaced. I wasn't sure from your message whether you had other things going on that made it clear you had a faulty battery, or only the same symptoms I reported. Were there other power-related problems in your case, or only, as you wrote "the same thing as yours except mine cut off at 28%"?
I guess I misunderstood your original post, everything yours was doing mine was doing except mine cut off at 28% not 39%. I can only give advice on what you post. Are there other things happening that you didn't mention?
My idea of a faulty battery must be different than yours. If I don't get warnings I should and the battery does not work like it used to then that is a faulty battery in my opinion.
If your not comfortable with any of my suggestions contact Apple support and maybe they can help you. Possibly one of the other posters on here can give you different advice that you agree with. Never do anything advised in the forums unless you agree with it. -
2006 Macbook running 10.6.8 shuts down without warning
It's a 2006 Macbook (I bought new in 06) running os x 10.6.8. Up until 6 months ago no problems what so ever with the computer. I would be working and every once in a while, it would just shut down. Replaced the battery less than a year ago. Power supply (60w charger) had a short, so I replaced that about a week ago. Computer is still shutting down without warning. I did the 1.1 update on the OSX but it still acts up. I'm lucky to be able to use the computer right now (it's been running for 20 minutes...this time). Would it help if I upgraded to LION, or would it still do it then? Any help please...I'm a musician and it's my livelyhood.
Thanks,
DavidWhen a Mac shuts down without warning, it's doubtful an upgrade will be the fix. You need to find out what's causing the problem.
Check the startup disk.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, restart the Mac while inserting the install disc and holding down the C key simultaneously. From there you should be able to repair the startup disk.
No errors were found, run the Apple Hardware Test > Using Apple Hardware Test
If installed, anti virus software can cause system anomalies such as an unexpected shut down. -
My MacBook shuts down without warning. I recently installed Snow Leopard and increased my RAM/Memory. My battery is fine. When I took it to the Genius Bar and they ran a diagnostic, nothing showed up. It appeared fine and did not shut down during the time I was in the Apple Store. Of course, once I made the two-hour drive home, my computer shut down within two minutes of using it. Any ideas? Do I need a new computer? This one is about 5 years old.
Sounds like a buggerd battery chip. If the MacBook turns off at a certain percent all the time, then your battery's status chip is damaged and is (quite literally) lying to Mac OS X.
If it is actually hitting 0%, then temperature could be an issue or a there may be an issue with the battery itself.
My advice: you may need to get a new MacBook as a new battery for 2006-model MacBook may be hard to come by (and defintiely no warranty support from Apple). -
It just shuts down without warning
Hi there,
My MacBookPro shipped on 06.2006 is shutting down without warning after more or less one hour when in battery use (The battery has 142 cycles). I've already reset and recalibrated the battery but without success. I also did the efi updates and the resend battery update also no success. The power level seams to drop rapidly without warning. The used battery is also not included in the apple exchange program (wrong serial no.). It is normal for a battery this age to have a power decrease but at least I’d like to get a warning before the computer shuts down. Please help me with your suggestions.OK, first, let's be clear on this and all future posts: is the MBP running on battery (NOT plugged in) or is it pugged in. You can see that if it is NOT plugged in, then there could be battery issues and that's the first thing I would try to diagnose. There are several posts in this forum about that problem (which doesn't pertain to me or to esqjake, since our problems occur in both situations). If I can summarize:
1) download the latest software; if you have a MacBook (not Pro) you need to have a Battery Update. MB Pro's don't need this.
2) Check your battery life and charge, using System Profiler. In OS 10.4 there's info on Power; the Battery section looks like this:
Battery Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4657
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 4330
Amperage (mA): 939
Voltage (mV): 12560
Cycle Count: 124
Apparently if the cycle count is under 300 and the mAh is low then you may qualify for a replacement battery. You'll have to search for yourself in the Forum for the exact numbers, sorry, since that's not what I'm experiencing I didn't write it down.
Now, on to the second type of problem: the MBPro shuts down *+without warning+* typically after being woken from sleep. Note that this is not a typical shut down; the computer just turns off. Also note, this is not a kernal panic, where the screen goes dark like a curtain is coming down and you get a polite message in multiple languages to hold the power key down to restart; no, the computer just turns off. Also typical is you have to hold down the power key for 5+ seconds (until you hear the tone and the power light flashes) or it won't restart; it will start for a few seconds and turn off again. Once I've restarted, it seems to work OK until the next time I try to wake it up; my current solution is that I'm just leaving it on. This has been called Random Shut Down Syndrome or RSS; you can do a search yourself if you have some time. Google will get you half a million hits or so (there's even a website called www.macbookrandomshutdown.com); there are far less in these discussion forums (and less help here, too, I've found. Doesn't Apple have an administrator looking at these posts?). Unfortunately, most of the hits deal the the MacBook, not the MacBook Pro. However, perhaps one of them will help.
Here's what I've found as possible causes:
1) a warped battery (mine isn't);
2) reset the System Manager Control (SMC)(unplug, battery out, hold down power key 5+ seconds, reboot);
3) due to overheating (again, it has happened immediately after waking from sleep, so it's the case is cool); or
4) there are some posts about looking through the console logs (Use the Console app located in the Utilities folder, and open console.log, console0.log, or consoleX.log). The console and system logs haven't been helpful for me personally (occasionally I've gotten the "previous shutdown cause= -82" message in the system log, supposedly a sign of RSS, but this is not consistent).
Now, here's something I found today, a simple test to see if you have RSS, but it is old and pertains (yet again) to the MacBook, not the Pro. However, I'll give it a try.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=274
Anyway, I'm ready to bring mine in; I just can't afford to be without it just now. No data seems to be lost, so I'm just trying to get by, and put up with the RSS.
I hope that helps. Maybe some of the "Top Users" would like to help? I'm still lost. -
Macbook Pro shuts down unexpectedly while on battery
My Macbook Pro will shutdown without warning when the battery level gets somewhere around 50%. This system is only 1 year old and the battery information shows a cycle count of 163. Is this the standard lifespan of a Macbook battery these days? Is anyone else experiencing this after one year?
Hi !
I have the same problem with my new Macbook Pro 17. Right now I am trying the described calibration procedure but I am not sure if can do this right. Step 4 in ths procedure tells me to
"Continue to keep your computer on until it goes to sleep. Save all your work and close all applications when the battery gets very low, before the computer goes to sleep."
But my computer never goes to sleep when the battery is low. It always shuts down when the battery reaches about 25 %. Will the calibration procedure still work ?
What frightens me is the output of the System Information (sorry all in german) :
Batterie-Informationen:
Informationen zum Batteriemodell:
Seriennummer: DP-bq20z951-3a65-6550
Hersteller: DP
Gerätename: bq20z951

Hardware-Version: 0001

Informationen zum Batteriezustand:
Anzahl der Zyklen: 8
Bedingung: Batterieüberprüfen
Batterie ist installiert: Ja
Stromverbrauch (in mA): 2568
Spannung (in mV): 8332
It tells me that my full capacity is 9396 mAh. Shouldn't this be something like 12000 mAh ? At least this is what I read in other posts. Will this value also be influenced by the calibration procedure ?

Macbook Pro shut down and won't restart
Hi all
My Macbook Pro is just over one year old so now out of warranty. It just shut down without warning a few weeks ago (nothing strange happened, no water spillage or anything like that) and wouldn't turn back on. When I attached the charger to it there was no little light (either green or orange) and would just do nothing at all. I took it to an authorized Apple technicians (I live in Dubai) and they reset the motherboard and it was working fine. Last week it did exactly the same thing and shut down again and wouldn't turn back on. They're now saying they may need to replace the whole motherboard which is going to cost me a fair bit.
I'm quite annoyed as it is my first Macbook Pro and everybody told me how they never have problems etc etc. Any other suggestions as to what might be the issue or do I just need to shell out for the motherboard? I'd read online that the battery could be the issue but they're saying they tried a new battery in another customer's machine and it didn't work so are replacing the motherboard.
Thanks,
LaurenIt is difficult for anyone to ***** the problems your MBP is experiencing in a setting such as this forum. The best I can do is point you to this troubleshooting article;

My girlfriends Macbook Pro shuts down at the Apple Logo....
1)I start the computer
2)It loads to the apple logo
3)A progress bar shows and loads about 5% then it dissappears and a few seconds later the macbook pro shuts down.
Any solutions?
If not, is there any way for me to reinstall the os without losing any files such as(any of her pictures, music, etc)?Hi S,
See if you can run Repair Disk: Boot frominstall disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key andkeep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screenselect the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in themenu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the leftside> click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’thappen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directoryis damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damagedHD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HDitself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, andrestart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > DiskUtility and run Repair Permissions. -
Photoshop CS4 crashes and shuts down without warning.
I have installed the new CS4 upgrade, and I have disabled the GPU. I have just upgraded to 2MB of RAM. However, PSD CS4 will suddenly shut down without warning at unpredictable times - yesterday it happened when I zoomed in past 200% - today it happened when I hit Save For Web. Really annoying. Any ideas?
Thanks
