Macbook Pro 2010 won't recognise Dell Ultrasharp 2312hm

Hi
Desperate for help
Have purchased a Dell Ultrasharp 2312HM
I have connected it to my macbook pro 6.2 2010 (Serial Number (system): W8******AGW) via DVI cable and DVI to mini displayport connector at the mac end)
I have selected DVI input on the monitor but it just says no computer detected and goes into sleep mode
At the mac end of things, the macbooc screen flashes blue momentarily then goes back to normal.
In display preference on the mac, clicking the 'Detect displays' button has no effect whatsoever.
So in summary, the monitor is on and wired up to mac, but mac isnt detecting it
There was an identical issue from someone else back in 2012 and a long thread. I don't believe the person ever got it sorted.
...oh and Dell don't provide any support for this and say it's not compatible, but I can see from numerous threads that others have it working perpectly.
2 things I've thought of...the dell monitor instructions says it comes with a white DVI cable. Mine is black that was in the box.
I purchased a fairly cheap DVI to mini displayport adaptor on Ebay. Could this be duff? (the seller only had positive feedback)
Help before I go mental!
thank you!

you have a notebook, not a Mac Pro workstation.

  • My MacBook Pro 2010 won't update from 10.6.8 to 10.9

Recently I tried updating my MacBook Pro 2010 13 inch from osx 10.6.8 to osx 10.9.
On the mavericks installer my hard drive is greyed out and when I try to click on it to install mavericks it just says "you cannot install osx to this harddrive". My specs are 4 GB of ram, 2.4ghz processor, 250 GB harddrive with 249 GB of free spaces.
    Please help!

How is the drive formatted and what is the Partition Table set to. If you have a format of "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Case sensitive" or the Partition Table is set to anything other than GUID that might be the reason Mavericks won't install. Not really sure but check that out.
Other than that you could backup you Mac with time machine, wipe the drive, actually repartition it with a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) [NO Case Sensitive] and a partition table of GUID and do a clean install of Snow Leopard, Update that to 10.6.8 then upgrade to Mavericks use Migration assistant to restore your files setting and apps.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 won't F update

i got given a 4gb macbook pro 2010 for christmas. its running on version 10.7.5
i tried updating it to Mavericks from the app store but i dont hav enough memory,
i have also tried searching for new updates but it cant fin any,
when i try and buy an item from the app store it says that os x 10.9 and above is required.
how do i find an update to satisfy this?
    HELP

OS X Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store, so do it.
If you get a message telling you that you do not have enough memory, it is because you do not have enough free space on the hard drive to install OS X Mavericks, so you need to delete files or move them to an external drive.
In order to get free space, see > http://thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html Once you have enough free space, download OS X Mavericks and upgrade, so you will be able to install all applications that require OS X Mavericks. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine before upgrading and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • My macbook pro 2012 won't recognise my flash drive

I have just brought a Macbook Pro Retina and i am trying to transport documents from my P.C via a flash drive, but the macbook will not recognise the flash drive? its work in my husbands mac but not this one??? Also outlook will not let me add an account? apple care cant help with that one either????

Did you format the USB flash drive on your Mac in a Windows format that both will read and write? And you say that it works on your husbands Mac? The problem is probably your USB 3.0 port. There have been some issues with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models. Some were solved by the July 18th Software Update, some may be solved with the release of Mountain Lion (10.8) today. In any case, try the drive on the right USB port to see if it will read. Also make sure that you have all Software Updates.
I'm not sure why you're not able to add an account in Outlook. I use Outlook and have had few problems with it. I might suggest that you go under the Help menu in Outlook and Check for Updates. There have been two in the past couple of months. If that doesn't help, try the Outlook for Mac users forum at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoutlook.
    Good luck,

  • Macbook pro now won't recognise airport express

    Hi
I have been using my macbook pro (10.5.8) and airport express together with no problems for years and suddenly my macbook is not recognising the airport. Luckily I have a macbook air in the house and there is no problems with that so I am able to access the internet and ask this question!
Just before it happened, the battery on my macbook pro had run down as it was left unplugged - could this be why? And does anyone know how to fix it? I have restarted the computer twice but no good.
Since my iphone and macbook air are both running effectively off the airport network, i can assume the problem is with the macbook pro and not the airport, right?
    thanks

"...i can assume the problem is with the macbook pro and not the airport, right?"
Perhaps, but what I do is to reset the AE and then set it up from the MBP.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 won't boot

So I was using my MBP 2010 15" i7, I left the lid open and walked to the fridge to get something to eat. By the time I got back, the screen is black and the computer was off. I thought maybe it ran out of battery, so I plugged the power supply in and pressed the power button. The indicator on the magsafe stays green, even though I know it isn't fully charged. The computer will not make a noise or display anything, except the sleep indicator light which sort of blinks and cuts off sharply about 2 times per second. I have tried using a different outlet, and leaving it to charge for a while, but it still just won't turn on. I have read something about this saying the the RAM may have become dislodged or something similar, but I have never opened the case of the laptop, and i'm not sure if I would be confident touching intricate pieces of machinery like that. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

It's highly unlikely that this would have anything to do with your RAM, especially if you haven't ever opened the case.
You should try resetting the SMC.  If that doesn't work, you'll need to contact Apple, as it sounds like you may have had a hardware failure of some kind.

  • So ML's new airplay functionality won't work on a Macbook Pro 2010?

Was there anything in the advertisements for the new Airplay functionality via ML that it wouldn't apply to any machines prior to 2011?
Am I just missing something about how to enable it, or is my MacBook Pro 2010 really unable to make use of the mirroring functionality?
I have this sinking feeling that I've been hosed

    to say the least, DIS-appointing.
Apple's done a better job in the past of identifying which machines would work with software upgrades. I suppose I missed the fine print, but since this kind of functionality would be highly coveted, it would've served Apple to make more prominent in their descriptions this issue.

  • MAcBook Pro (2010) i7 17" Strange problem (filesystem crash)

About month ago I changed my 1 year old MBP 2009 to MacBook Pro 2010 17" i7 one. I moved SSD (Patriot KOI 256GB) and 8GB of RAM to new device. I have noticed strange problem - sometimes filesystem crashes. When application ask to reboot system (because of reboot or instalation) sometimes system refuse to start - it shows progress bar similar to the one shown when going back from deep sleep. Or I can hear bell (standard one) but after this system powers off. The only way to have system working back is to use Disc Warrior to repair it because Disk Utility from install DVD can't repair filesystem and suggest to reinstall it and take data from backup.
I have no such problems with previous device. It happens even on fresh system for example just after installing Norton Internet Security (when installer asked for permission to reboot). I have no sudden hangs, no other problems at all.
    Any suggestions?
During month it happens about 10 times. I even prepared my rescue USB with installed system and Disk Warrior.
Hardware test goes without problems. SMART status of drive is ok.

You can ignore the advice of nearly all the long-time contributors to these Discussions and keep Norton utilities on your Mac, but I guarantee that every time you mention Norton anything in these forums, you will be advised to remove it completely. Perhaps it isn't responsible for your present problem, but I'm certainly not convinced of that, and because Norton software is a well-known cause of trouble in OS X, I suspect many other people reading this thread won't be convinced either.
When you reinstalled the OS on your new machine, did you do so from the DVDs that came with it? Did you completely erase the hard drive?

  • Lion Login gives me Beach Ball lock up - Macbook Pro 2010

Ever since i updated my Macbook Pro 2010 15 i7 to lion, when i turn it on and it comes to the log in screen (i need it password protected for turning on), the beach ball just spins and it wont let me type my password in.
I ran disk permissions, i made sure my HD wasnt over loaded, ram has been in there since i got the mbp. I reset the pram once it let me in, then later on the mbp crahsed on me and it told me to restart it. I did and the beach ball came back on the log in. I powered down and reset the pram and still i got a beach ball at log in. Powered down again and it let me type my password half way then beach ball. Powered down again and then it let me type my whole password.
Have to say this is becoming a hassle, anyone have any ideas? or is it best to just go back to Snow Leapord?

I'm having the same problems on a 2011 iMac i7.
It won't let me type in my password - the spinning beachball is there instead.
It only happens to me when I leave my iMac locked for long periods of time.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 - Charger light, Dim green.

    Hey there Fruit Geniuses.
My current situation is that of my Macbook Pro 2010 not getting a charge from my Magsafe after the laptop fell connected on to the charge corner from maybe 1/2 meter to a carpet floor.
The chargers light on the L keeps a green DIM light, and my laptop doesnt not recognise the charger at all.
The charger itself is about a year and 3 months old as my previous got the freid wires last time.that,
What im wondering is, is it my charger thats went bust ( and should a third party replacement ) be okay thing to buy.
Or is my DC inboard went funny. As i can replace this as iv tore my macs logic board out before all pretty easy to me.
(macbook still worked after before its battery died completely as i turned it back on to make sure my reconnecting of the board worked.)
but since then it has no power, Kapoot.SO, do i order a new DC inboard connection, But a third party charger as £70 AGAIN im not willing.

Yeah been trying to find someone with a macbook and charger to test out for a week or two now to try eliminate which it is, so i know which to buy. Both to me are as easy as one another but just so i dont go buying one when its the other.
Hopeufully someone soon will have one, Fingers crossed.
    Thank, Ogel.

  • MacBook Pro (2010) hanging for 30 seconds after sleep

I have a 13" MacBook Pro (2010), which I've owned since June. When I got it, I installed the 640GB Samsung HDD that I had in my previous 15" MacBook Pro (I also reinstalled OS X on the drive and restored my data from a backup)
The problem is that when I open the lid and wake it from sleep, the display turns on and shows the desktop, but the computer is unresponsive for about 30 seconds. That is, the mouse cursor isn't there and no keyboard inputs are recognised. After 30 seconds or so, the mouse cursor appears and it's back to normal again.
I've tried making a new user account and the problem remains with that, and I've also installed 10.6 again and restored my data, and I still have the problem.
Could it be anything to do with the 640GB HDD, even though it worked absolutely fine with my 15" MBP? Or is there anything else I can try?
    Many thanks!

You can try resetting and PRAM

I would not suspect this will help, but easy enough to do, and with any luck...

does the problem persist? Then Reboot?

  • IPhone 4S not wifi syncing with Macbook Pro (2010, Mountain Lion)

Subject pretty much says it all: I can't get my iphone 4S to wifi sync with my Macbook Pro (2010, running Mountain Lion).  All relevant pieces have been updated (latest OS on laptop and device, latest iTunes, etc.).  wifi sync did work at some point but now simply won't; the device does not show up in iTunes, and trying to manually start a sync from the device just leave it looking for my laptop forever.
A little Google digging did make reference to trying to kill "AppleMobileDeviceHelper" and restarting iTunes.  I have noticed that AppleMobileDeviceHelper is not running...should it be?  I've even tried manually starting it and it doesn't seem to work.  I dug through Console looking for references to it in logs and didn't find anything.
    Any suggestions/ideas appreciated.
    Thanks.
