Macbook pro 2012 is slower than macbook air 2012
I have found that my macbook pro 2012 13" (non retina) is slower than macbook air 13" my co-workers own. all macbooks have same softwares and versions.
Macbook pro has better processor but Macbook Air is faster. I guess it is because of Hard drive in pro vs SSD in Air. so my questions are:
Does anyone have a same exprience?
and if I change my HDD to SSD can i beat macbook pro in speed?
waiting for your quick answers because I am feeling bad these days.
Thanks in advance
Take a look at my one and only user tip - Upgrading Your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive.
If you have any questions after reading it, just call back. The tip really needs to be updated but I just haven't gotten around to doing so... so many different drives available now!

Ever since moving to OS 10.9.x my MacBook Pro has operated slower than before the change. Today I accessed the "monitor" and there scrolling up on the screen was this:

What is this?Looks like remote access software.

My macbook pro is running slower than normal, is there a way to speed it back up?
Lately my Macbook pro has been slowing way down. This primarily happens when working in Photoshop (or at least that is where I notice it most) and if I shut down then start back up it is slightly faster. I am an old PC guy and have only been on a Mac for a year now. With PC's you could clean out a cache or do some other things to "clean out the system". Is there something I can do on the Mac to bring the working speed back up to where it was when I bought the system? I have already cleaned out the trash and I transfer most of my images and large file to an external drive so I have over 1/2 my HD space still available.

1: Max out your RAM. Crucial.com has a excellent method to make sure you get the exact RAM specifications and tells you the amount of RAM slots available (you have two, both filled with the default RAM) Buy your RAM wherever you like of course once you get the information.
2: If you have a more recent machine, OtherWorld Computing has 16GB of RAM available for $1500 if your game. That would most certainly speed up Photoshop as it wouldn't have to swap the extra memory to the hard drive (slow). I don't know who else sells 16GB of RAM at this time.
3: You can install a 500GB OCZ Vertex SSD drive and use that as the boot drive, your Photoshop will most certainly scream. But the fastest 500GB OCZ Vertex SSD on the market is $1800. Apple's is slower (needs a new Mac) and is about $1500. You could go with a smaller/faster SSD, but lack significant storage space. SSD's are not 100% erasable and have limited write capacity. You could opt for a 7,200 RPM hard drive replacement and gain some more speed and large storage capicity without breaking the bank.
4: You can run ALL the maintenance and cleaning aspects of the free OnyX and reboot, that will perform the "cache cleaning" your looking for and perhaps solve something that is messed up and slowing your machine down, but it's not a significant performance enhancer.
Since your a new Mac user, there is a lot of free "extras" including OnyX, that a Mac user might have great need for, included in this list.

New Macbook Pro Wireless is slower than Old G5 Tower
Less than 2 months out of the box, my 15 inch 2.4Ghz Intel Macbook Pro started acting up.
First, waking it from sleep mode seemed to take longer than normal (5 to 10 seconds?).
Then one day, the battery just went kaput. I did a hardware test and got a hit. Called Apple and they mailed me a new battery in less than 24 hours.
The battery works great. But the sleep thing still seems to take longer than it should.
But the real thing that worries me is how SLOW the wireless connection is... at home, as well as on other people's networks. At home I have an Airport Extreme (not the latest square-shaped model, but the one that looks like a flying saucer). And my G5 Tower dual 1.8 wireless loads pages faster than my Macbook Pro.
I'm no expert, but that's just wrong.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!that's a good point too, if I'm getting you. People will be putting, quite understandably, in their G5 HDs into their MPs. Tech changes and so too the well being of HDs. It would pay in the end to do a really thorough job of making sure an HD is OK and working well.
Why is it so hard or impossible for Migration Assistant to have "smart" update and know the source is PPC and Apple Partition Table.
Because, I think, they were more concerned with the new machines than the old ones and their users. It didn't slow them down enough to consider the problems new users from G5s would go through.
Bunch of funky stuff all over the place if one looks hard enough, or encounters an extended "bad" day on their Macs. Shows me the tech is still so new and evolving, it seems it will never be complete. And I still think this is only the beginning in the Computer Age. If we make it, these things are going to change the face of the planet, for the better, if we use them right. -
Mac Pro SpeedTest MUCH Slower Than MacBook!?!?!?
I just upgraded my cable modem to a DOCSIS 3.0 model. My Mac Pro consistently gets 4 Kb/sec whereas my MacBook, Mac Mini, and a PC all consistently get 15+ Kb/sec. I've tested the MacPro with the same physical ethernet connection as the MacBook and get the same results, so I'm sure it's not a cable problem. I've reinstalled Snow Leopard as well - still no difference. FYI, I am using dslreports.com flash speed test utility.
One thing I have noticed is that the speed test "dial" acts erratically during the test as if it is trying to go higher but locks up along the way. When running this test on the other machines, it is always very smooth and VERY fast.
Any ideas???I have a Comcast extreme with 50mb service. Search out speakeasy speed test and try out your speed. Also is the MacPro connected by wireless or wire? Is it going through the same router as the other 2 computers? Some routers are really slow. I found this out and upgraded mine. If your network is wired then maybe you have a bad connection somewhere or then run is too long. And make sure the cable is NOT spliced anywhere, etc...
Let me know how it goes.

Late 2007 Macbook Pro 802.11n slow transmit rate
I have a Netgear Rangemax N router. But when I connect to the network and option+click on the wifi, my PHY Mode says "802.11n" but my transmit rate is only 54. When my Macbook air connects to the same router, the PHY Mode is still 802.11n, but my transmit is 170. What is happening that my Macbook Pro is connecting slower than the Macbook Air when on the same network?
When I read "crash," "distorted line across my screen," "it gets really hot," and "2007 17" MacBook Pro," the first thing that comes to mind is logic/graphics board. Visit your local Apple Store, and see if they can validate this suspicion or not. The SMART utility reading usually precedes a drive failure, but it's hard to conclude what's happening here.
In the meantime, make sure you're completely backed up. If you don't back up, purchase an external HD, and back up with SuperDuper. Preserve your machine by running things at lower temperatures (under 160•F), and keep an eye on iStat.
Oh, and tell us the problem when you know. -
2010 Macbook pro is running slow in Mavericks. Do I need more than 4gb ram?
My late 2010 13" 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro is running slow since upgrading to Mavericks. I currently only have 4gb of ram. When I boot up It takes quite awhile (nearly 5 minutes or more) before the system is usable. Or it takes almost as long to switch to another user. Once I let it sit, it runs fine. I'm mostly using Safari and possibly MS Word at any given time. I looked at the Activity monitor and I believe I'm using aboiut 3.6 - 3.9gb of physical memory and over 4gb of virtual memory. Swap is using 0 at all times.
Do I need more RAM? Wipe my drive and do a fresh install? I'm reluctant to do the latter, because I don't want to have to reinstall all of my apps (even witha TM backup).
Thanks allThanks Linc for any help-
Hope I didn't paste too much. Uninstalling CleanMyMac has already helped some. Here goes:

My MacBook Pro system is operating very slowly. Apps take quite a while to open (oftentimes 2-3 minutes or longer) and navigating through my documents is cumbersome. I get the spinning wheel while I'm searching for a document. The machine appears to be running most of the time, as if something is going on in the background. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide. I only open the apps that I need at the time.
Here is my EtreCheck report. Hopefully it has info that could help:

New MacBook Pro Running Extremely Slow.
My MacBook Pro was purchased less than a week ago, and it is now running very slow, at the point of freezing for over a minute. What could be a good solution for this? I tried searching on Google and Youtube but I don't trust any software downloads from websites other than Apple. Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro (mid 2010) - Slow Startup and Initial Load of Apps after Mavericks Install
Hello everyone,
Long time Snow Leopard user here. I've been absolutely, 100% thrilled with my MBP's performance / speed since mid 2010. Since installing Mavericks I've noticed two things:
1. Initial on boot load times seem much slower
2. The first time you open an app (Safari, even TextEdit) is far slower than in Snow Leopard.
Now granted, once the computer has been on for about 5 minutes, and once you've had an application open for 1-2 minutes, than performance is okay once again. But it seems that quite literally everytime you do "anything" for the first time since the computer has been turned on you run the risk of a spinning beachball and an extended wait. This simply never happened in Snow Leopard.
I'm not a computer science major but I do understand that when you do something for the first time since a reboot it will need to load new files into the RAM which takes time. However, I've been using this computer since 2010 and have never experienced this behavior / speed / delay, etc... something seems fundamentally different.
For example, even just opening finder, and navigating to the Applications folder results in sluggish behavior the first time. Also, anytime you first click the top menu bar in an application you run the risk of a beachball.
It doesn't seem like a failing hard drive because I can read/write large chunks of data one an app is finally loaded. It's just initially loading the app takes quite literally 10-20 times longer than Snow Leopard. It seems like perhaps Mavericks itself, the core of the new OS was perhaps installed in a bad sector of the HD, but none of my other files are on bad sectors... if that makes sense. Again - I'm not a computer science major so I'm largely just making things up
It also seems as if multitasking and switching between several open apps has seen a decrease in performance. Could it be that perhaps Mavericks RAM management is superior to Snow Leopard, but only if there is a TON of RAM to go around? Could it be as simple as Macs with only 4GB installed should not be allowed to even install Mavericks?
Does this sound normal for Mavericks considering I have a C2D processor, a non SSD, and only 4GB ram? I know those specs are "outdated" for 2014, but keep in mind these were the specs that I've always had and with Snow Leoapard I was consistently thrilled with the speed of the computer.
I suppose my question is: should my strategy be to simply turn the computer on, get a cup of coffee and let everything load and maybe even have my frequently used apps load on startup, etc... and carry on as normal? Does something seem off? Should I invest in a new SSD / RAM upgrade? I know the upgrades couldn't hurt, but the issue is that I was perfectly content until upgrading to Mavericks
I've tried booting into OS X Recovery mode and using the Disk Utility. I've tried Safe Mode. I've included a "EtreCheck" report below. I'm open to any ideas / suggestions.
Thanks!!

0 B Page-outsWish I could be of some help, but I'm having similar issues on my mid 2011 macbook pro with 8 GB ram. It's very frustrating. I haven't worked on a computer this slow since the early 90's. Even simple things like signing in to this site bring up the beach ball for maybe ten seconds. When opening up apps I often have to wait minutes, and often end up force quitting when they hang. I'm using force quit a dozen or more times a day, when it used to be very rare.
I don't know if it's Mavericks. I installed a new hard drive in November, but the problems really started getting bad since the latest upgrade.
It's not just opening apps. If I have an app open in the background and switch to it I have similar issues. Watching a simple video is often accompanied by stalls and delays - which is really bad as I'm often using the laptop to edit video. It's become unuseable for work.
Perhaps the most frustrating is clicking on a link, only to find Safari decides to complete a previous scroll that it had paused. The page jumps down, and sometimes I end up clicking on a link I didn't want. Then I have to wait for THAT spinning beach ball before I can go back to the previous spinning beach ball.
It can take up to ten minutes to restart. I've tried everything I could find on these pages so far, and nothing has worked.
I thought maybe it was something I've done (and perhaps it is), but I keep seeing others with similar issues. -
MacBook Pro Stalls/Running slow since Mavericks Installation
On the advice of the more experienced here is a new thread.
Since installing Mavericks my MBP has gone from pretty much an instant response to requests, to stalling, the spinning pinwheel, longer startup and shutdown times, as well as slower access to websites (Chrome and Safari, though Safari appears slower).
I have been advised to run EtreCheck when I first joined a post regarding the same problem. I posted the results and was advised to work through some of the issues. This is the initial test result and the very much appreciated advice.
NOTE - EXTENSIVE TEXT TO FOLLOW.
I don't have a specific fix from your report, but I can point out what other users have had issues with.

Red is the items I'd look at these are mostly 'system level' - they can alter a lot in the OS. Check the developers website, update or remove the apps if the developer doesn't say it supports 10.9 or if you can live without them.
Soundflower is out of date & it is a 'kernel extension', the kernel is the core of the OS - you don't want any old code running here.
The installer has a removal tool too https://code.google.com/p/soundflower/ so update or remove it if you don't use it.
Update or remove Paragon's NTFS tool, it is running at a system level & it's background jobs seem to be in a 'problem state', it also has something running in the kernel.
Adobe has an updater running, try to ensure Adobe's apps are all up to date, just incase they have stopped checking. Repeat with Google's apps, just launch the apps & look in the 'App menu' or the Help menu for updates. These companies tend to reinstall the updaters if you try to delete them, so there it little you can do but keep the apps updated.
It's odd that all your User Launch Agents: are not loaded, these are background jobs that start on login (if they are in a loaded state). The same principle applies, update or remove the related apps if they are not needed.
CleanMyMac is a concern - there are lots of posts here claiming it can break the OS - it can help you to remove files that are installed by Apple which is not the best idea. I am unconvinced that running 'maintenance utilities' all the time is a good idea, however the app removal tool may be OK for cases where a developer doesn't have an uninstaller. 'Cleaner apps' use RAM & can spend time scanning files which can slow other tasks. Search here for varied opinions on CleanMyMac. I also use ClamXAV, ensure that is upto date & so check it's engine & rules are current.
The purple items are 'user level' items (run on login of your account).
There is a simple way to see if your issues are because of 'user level' items, create a new test user account & login as that user. If the Mac is stable you can assume it is something within your 'user items'.
Check that you need the Login Items running every time you login. They are listed in System Preferences> Users & groups > select your account… login items tab.
You appear to have 3 LogMeIn internet plugins installed - is Safari behaving OK or running slow? I would consider removing most plugins & then installing them as you need them. You can look inside /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ to remove them manually.
~/Library is your 'home library' Use the Finders Go Menu > Open Folder… and enter ~/Library to reveal it. Apple hid this Library folder.
I'd be tempted to remove the Java applet plugin - old Java is a real secuity risk & Safari has probably disabled this for you already.
There seems to be 2 Facebook plugins installed (probably inside your ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/). Remove the oldest one & look for the newest release. Update the Safari Extension if it needs it too.
The Preference Panes are installed in /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/. Open System prefs & launch each third party pref pane (the bottom rows) & check for updates if possible. These also have an ability to modify the OS, so any errors could effect everything. You can usually right click (or ctrl+click) to remove them from the preferences (it removes them from the OS, but may leave any libraries or extra tools behind - see if the developer has removal instructions).
I see you have Plex installed, does this run very often? I find it can drag a Mac to a slow crawl when it is indexing. I suspect Connect360 may do similar things, but I don't really know for sure what it does .
MenuTab for Facebook seems to be doing something with RAM & CPU, update or remove if you don't need it.
That may all be daunting, but it should help. Start with the system level items, and then look at updating the other items. You may find things improve after a cleanup & a reboot.
This was extremely helpful and I have gone as far as my knowledge will allow for now. I did make a bootable clone of the main HDD prior to doing anything, and now there seems to be little improvment following the suggestions made. Also along the way MacFuse was deleted and well as Flip4Mac and NTFS.
Things are far from perfect though and the MBP still stalls and is performing very poorly.
I have run another EtreCheck, results below;

I would un-install CleanMyMac. It has caused problems for others and in some cases has gone so far as to wreck their system.

My macbook pro is going slow lately
My macbook pro is going slow lately, it takes longer time to just open a finder window or a simple photo or word document or pdf document. Everything in general goes slower than before.
I don´t know what to do to fix this and have the macbook pro run as it used to before.
Thank you

Mar 26, 2015, 08:20:29 AM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/plugin-container_2015-03-26-08 2029_[redacted].crashI’ve tried running 10.10 on quite a few different computers with 4GB of RAM and a standard mechanical hard drive and all of them performed worse with Yosemite than they did with Mavericks (10.9). And about a year ago I found that they performed better with Mt Lion (10.8) than Mavericks. Each version of the Mac OS has required more memory than the version that came before it and that means that every couple of years the minimum acceptable RAM is increased. Apple signaled this quietly at the Apple Store - only one computer now ships with 4GB of RAM. (And I can tell you from personal experience that in that configuration it is not fun to use.)
Bottom line: you need at least 8GB of RAM or an SSD. Both are better. In the meantime run as lean a machine as possible. MacKeeper is a waste of money no matter what anyone might tell you. At best it is not necessary and is a waste of money.
