Macbook pro 5,2 Falls asleep unexpectedly

My 17" MacBook Pro 5,2 has a problem with staying awake... At random (increasingly so) the screen will flicker and it will put itself to sleep...
After I wake it up again, I'll see growl notifications about magicprefs (wich is standard after awaking my macbook). Does anybody have an answer as to how to keep my macbook pro from falling asleep every 2 minutes? Thanxzzzzzzzz...... Huh?

  • PLEASE HELP! My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep

My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep on its own any more. Currently, my Energy saver is set so that the display falls asleep after 1 minute, and the computer itself, after 3 minutes. Even if I don't have any softwares running, or anything else, it doens't fall asleep. Please give me some suggestion about what to do about this! (or would I need to take it to a shop? ... )

Well, since the machine does properly sleep when the lid is closed, my guess would be that you have a software conflict and not a hardware problem. Since your are up to date, have repaired permissions, and can't remember anything else that may have changed, it could be difficult to track down the culprit.
One thing you can try, it takes a bit of work but will help show if software is the real problem. You could create a new user account, and don't install anything new in it. Log in as the new user, and see if sleep works there. Often as you use your main user profile, you accumulate software programs and utilities, and sometimes then can conflict with one another. If you create a fresh user account, often it will not have the same software conflict.
If the new account sleeps normally, then you can assume that you have a software conflict somewhere, and you should think through what you have installed. If the new user account has the same problem, my guess would be that something is out of whack with the OS, and you need to decide if a full system reinstall is worth it (that is a big decisions, don't just jump into it).
Regardless of the outcome, after you have used the second account for a test, you can simply delete it.
    Cheers,
    Josh

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.

Since I have installed OS X Mavericks, my Macbook pro (Mid 2010) shut down unexpectly everytime when I uploading image to Facebook or Ebay. What can I do?

A number of folks have posted similar crashing-related reports with that same system.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down when asleep overnight

Specs: Macbook Pro 9,1, 2.6 Ghz I7, 8GB Ram, running 10.8.2.  No other problems that I'm aware of.  This started a couple of weeks ago:
Behavior: When putting my Macbook Pro to sleep overnight, it shuts down several hours into the sleep process.  A press of the return key restarts the computer.  This behavior is not desired.  I want the computer to sleep overnight, not shut down.  The computer is not on a schedule to shut down or restart.
Other programs running: Dropbox, Google Drive, Fantastical, TotalFinder, Chrome
Overview of console system.log from this morning: Log begins at 12:36 am this morning while the computer is asleep.  It wakes up at 4:36 am and these are the last processes before being booted at 10:41 am.

  • Macbook Pro has been shutting down unexpectedly

My MacBook Pro (retina 15 inch) OS X Yosemite, which had been very stable since purchased in late 2013 has been shutting down unexpectedly in recent weeks. Sometimes it's caused by Excel or Quicken, other times, it's a mystery. And the whole computer crashes, not just a program. What could be causing this recent behavior?

I found the records using the info on the link you provided. I have had five kernel panics in the last month. Do you want me to post them all here? I've copied yesterday's below:

  • MacBook pro freezes when left asleep

When my MacBook pro is left asleep for prolonged periods I have found it beeping and the screen frozen--any thoughts as to why this might be happening?  Running OSX Mavericks.

  • Macbook pro runs hot when asleep

i have a macbook pro 2.26 intel core 2 duo
when i shut the macbook it goes to sleep, then when i go back to it an hour later, it is too hot to even touch.
the only open programs were ical and address book.
    any help?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
These are symptoms of a computer that does not actually go to sleep but continues to run.

  • My £2000 MacBook Pro 17'' is falling apart???!!!

I gave the case, keyboard and screen a wipe down with a dry lint free cloth earlier and am shocked!!!
There is a thin silver bar runing along the bottom of the keyboard, its painted SILVER - why, this area must get a hammering and my machine is 4 weeks old and the paint flaking off below command button!!!
And I have just found the reflective letter 'c' on the logo below the screen MacBook Pro 'c' and its fallen off???!
Now I dont know if this is donw to the heat or what, any experience in this people, what can apple do for me.
I bought the machine from PCWorld and as I use the machine for earning my money, just cant have it away for long.
My old Powerbook never had these aesthetic problems at all.
    Heeeeellllp....

    joolzb,
Without trying to tick you off for what is a stupid mfg/design issue. But if you dropped the "Pro" letters you could have the worlds first MacBook 17" !
or dropped the "Book", you get a Mac Pro 17" - another world first !
I saw someone else suffer this and hence never go near the letters. Give em a call, its not good enough.

  • Is it bad for the hard drive or the processor to carry my macbook pro while it is asleep?

I know for a fact that old notebooks used IDE hard drives and thus if they are carried while in sleep mode, it might damage the hard drive. For a Macbook Pro, is it dangerous at all to carry it while in sleep mode? Does it affect the processor or the hard drive or any other hardware at all?
    Thanks,
    j

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
In general, it is dangerous to carry any laptop with a physical hard drive while it is turned on, as the hard drive might get damaged. However, the MacBook Pro with Retina display (the same applies to the new MacBook and all MacBooks Air) uses flash storage, so you can just put the computer to sleep and carry it (you can do it even if it is turned on): no parts will be damaged.

  • MacBook Pro 13 early 2011 repeated unexpected shut down

This machine has had problems for 6 months or so, spontaneous shutdowns and automatic restarts.  It's been back to Apple twice: first time a cable change, the second a new logic board.  The HD and memory have been changed.  SMC has been reset.  It's running Yosemite.
After the logic board replacement the symptoms changed: the shutdowns occur apparently at random, sometimes a couple per day, sometimes it will go a week without problems.  I could see no pattern in the problem reports - but I'm not an expert at reading them!  However now there are problem reports, previously the machine stopped, restarted, and carried on as if nothing had happened.
These are not kernel panics with the falling curtain and multi-language message, the machine just stops and the screen goes dark, then restarts as if from a normal shutdown.
Taking it back to the Mac store is an option but the problem is the intermittency, it could run for days without failing and even Apple can't do much about a fault that doesn't happen to order!
I can't imagine that it's a software problem, but if it's hardware then really it's the logic board again isn't it?  I'm at a loss to know what to look at next and I'd appreciate some thoughts from others please.
    Keith

Sorry, I should have been clearer.
    ASD = Apple Service Diagnostics
I bought the machine second-hand a couple of years ago and don't have the start-up discs.  ASD is (so I understand) pretty much the same as the Apple Hardware Test, perhaps more rigorous?
Thanks for confirming my feelings about the HD, for the moment I'm assuming that ASD is simply telling me that it was not as supplied originally.  But I AM getting desperate <grin> so I might end up reverting the 320G just to see what happens.  Trouble is it takes ages to migrate ...
The disk passes all the Disk Utility (not run from the recovery partition but from a USB Mavericks install with my test tools on it) tests no problem and Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro as well, so I'm pretty sure it should be OK.
When ASD found the "fault" it stopped, everything up to that point was passed.  Either tonight or tomorrow I'll run the tests again, set to continue when it finds a fault, see if there's anything else ...

  • MacBook Pro won't stay asleep, treats shutdown as restart

My MacBookPro 13" in Snow Leopard 10.6.8 will not stay asleep. In the console, I see 10/17/11 6:09:28 AM          kernel          Wake reason = RTC, then all the networking comes up, a few other things, and it tries to go back to sleep again - writes out to the safesleep hibernation, then, boom. Awake again:
10/17/11 6:09:49 AM          kernel          Wake reason = RTC
    Yes, 21 seconds later.
All night long. If it's not plugged in, it's dead by morning.
Yes, I've zapped PRAM and reset SMC.
It's not always like this, but when it is, and I attempt to shutdown, as soon as it turns off, it turns back on again. In my mind, that stinks of hardware.
    Anyone?

  • MacBook Pro does not go to sleep

My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep by itself any longer. I can put it to sleep manually and it sleeps and wakes up fine.
But if the energy saver control panel is set to put it to sleep after x minutes it doesn't do so. It turns off the screen but doesn't go to sleep.
I have already trashed the Power Management preferences but that did not help.
    Any more ideas?

Thanks for the help so far.
No applications running, it doesn't even fall asleep after a restart with nothing open.
Yes, the light comes on and stays on. If it's asleep (which I can still get it to do manually or by closing the lid) then the light pulses. I can distinguish between those two states.
    Has anyone got other ideas?
    Best
    Hans
