Macbook Pro and 30" Cinema display for gaming?

Does anyone know if a Macbook Pro (17" i7 2010) would be powerful enough to drive the 30" Cinema display (or a Dell 30") specifically for gaming to a reasonable performance FPS with a game such as Call of Duty 4?
Would I have to knock down the resolution from the native 2560x1600 and if so is the image quality still acceptable or blurry? I realize I need either the dual link adaptor or the display port to achieve the max resolution but just wondering if it is asking too much of the graphics card?
Thanks in advance, any info much appreciated.
Rick.

Hi. The graphics card will be able to handle it. I would suggest using a Min Display Port to HDMI adapter. Most new adapters will even transfer the sound too so you can use the speakers built speakers on the TV.
I often use my 2008 model MacBook Pro with a Mini Display Port to HDMI on my 62'' Samsung DLP. Perfect 1080p quality.

  • Pixel Distorsion: MacBook Pro and 30" Cinema Display

Connecting the MacBook Pro to the Cinema Display using the Dual Link DVI Adapter (USB from Display plugged in Adapter, Adapter USB plugged in USB Port > not next to Mini-DVI Port) produced wild coloured Pixel Lines in the Dark Areas (really annoying) and starting After Effects CS4 it even gets worse: The full Interface is blinking green on the edges of each Panel.
    Pleeeaaaaase help!!

I have the same problem with my 30" HD display and the new 15" MBP. However, I did not have this problem initially. Until yesterday I had been fortunate not to experience issues (see reviews of the dual link adapter at the Apple store) regarding the 30" diplay. However, after contacting applecare about an unrelated issue, the technician had me restart holding the "shift" button. He said this would "correct a lot of stuff". Well it didn't seem to do anything except cause my 30" monitor to exhibit these same problems that everyone else is complaining about! Apple, please address this flaw!

  • 15" (late 2008) macbook pro and 30" cinema display??

Im looking to buy one of the new macbook pros, and I know that you need the$100 dual link cable to get it to work with the older apple displays.
With that cable what is the max resolution I will get on a 30" cinema display?
The max res for the 30" is 2560 x 1600 pixels, but I have heard that you may not be able to get real high rez with the 15"
anyone know, I would appreciate the help....
    -bill

You'll get 2560 x 1600 - that's the max resolution of the display, and it's the max resolution of dual-link DVI (at least, at the standard refresh rate).

  • Will my old isight camera work with my Macbook pro and HD Cinema display?

I have it hooked up but can't get the computer to switch from the built in camera to the external one.

Firewire iSights can be picky about how they are connected. My first suggestion for your particular trouble is to try connecting directly to one of your Mac's built-in FW ports rather than via the monitor's Firewire hub. More info:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage6.html
If necessary, you can use the suggestions from How to test your (external) iSight to ensure it is functional to be sure it is working with your new Mac.
The solutions to your issues about switching from the built-in camera depends on which application you are using to operate your iSight. Here is how camera selection works in a few exampleS:
    (1) For iChat, you can choose which iSight you use in the "Camera:" choices bar in iChat > Preferences... > Audio/Video that appears when more than one compatible camera is connected. Although your camera choices will be different, the choices bar will look something similar to the Preferences settings shown here:
If you cannot see this choices bar, your Mac is recognizing only one (or none) of your iSights. In that case, consider the suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
This choices bar solution applies ONLY to iChat. Most other applications also have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. However, they do not all work the same way.
    (2) For instance, iMovie HD's camera choice is NOT set via Preferences. When you have more than one compatible camera connected, iMovie uses a drop-down menu choice something like this (depending on which version of iMovie you use):
Note: Because I had no built-in iSight connected when I made this example, when my external iSight was disconnected, the drop-down menu showed only "Time Lapse." Because your Mac has a built-in iSight, your built-in iSight would show in the drop-down menu even when no other camera is connected. Connecting your external iSight should allow you to choose either camera.
iMove 8 (from iLife '09) uses a different camera choice button shown in this article:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/10172.html
In general, you can use your Mac's help for the application in use to find out how to select among more than one connected camera.
    (3) Photo Booth is a different matter. PB is such a simple, basic app that it offers no menu selectable choice. Unless you make your built-in iSight the camera being used by some open application before you launch Photo Booth, Photo Booth will use ONLY your built-in iSight.
However, you can use the trick from ¶ 4 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302781 to let Photo Booth use your Firewire external  iSight:
    • Connect your external iSight and turn it on.
    • Quit Photo Booth (PB) if it is running.
    • Launch any app with a user-selectable camera "Preferences..." menu command.
(The "tip" suggests that you use iChat, but others should work as well.)
    • Open "Preferences..." and set the camera "Preference" to use your built-in iSight.
    • Now launch PB. PB should now use the external iSight
because your built-in camera is in use by the other application.
    (4) For apps other than those above, see their Help or other documentation.
    (5) If you have specific questions, we will try to help, too.

  • Boot Camp, XP, Macbook Pro and a Cinema Display

Add these things together and what do you get? Frustration enough to beat my head against the wall.
If I get my Cinema Display to work at all when connected to the MBP in XP, it's because I said a prayer to Bill Gates, or I looked away at just the right time, or some other arcane mystical crap because without changing Display parameters at any time, it's a completely random crap shoot on whether or not XP will send output to my Cinema Display. I can't get clamshell mode to work at all. So, I cripple my video capabilities when I actually manage to get output to the Cinema Display.
I loaded the Boot Camp XP drivers and CCC app from Ati's site. They don't help. They don't run. They want 2.0 .Net framework, and somehow, with all the patches and crap downloaded and installed from microsoft they still don't work. I get errors of missing implementation files. The whole thing is buggier than ****. Had to find and install 2.0 .Net framework, then patch it. Still nothing works right.
I am my wits end and frustrated beyond belief. Anyone at all have suggestions to help? I've tried three times to get help from Applecare, and I either get told they can't help me, or I get put on hold then hung up on.

Same problem with a brand new (today) 20" CInema Display. Annoying but not a big issue until now.

  • Best stand for MacBook Pro and Apple LED Display

I am buying a MacBook Pro and Apple LED Display tomorrow. I want to have a two display setup, similar to what I have seen in the Apple Store. I believe they used a Griffin Elevator. I want to make sure of two things: that the stand is sturdy enough so that my laptop won't slide off of it and that I can adjust the stand/monitor so that the tops are level (so that moving my mouse from the laptop to monitor and back is smooth - i.e. the cursor doesn't jump up or down.
I like the fact that I can use this setup to go mobile very quickly, but what about my direct Ethernet connection. I wish there were a stand/dock such that I could hook everything up to it and then just undock the entire machine.

How did you solve the problem of closing the Macbook Pro when it was connected to the display and preventing it from going to sleep?
I am thinking about buying one. When I went to the local Apple Store the tech guys told me that it would be necessary to keep the laptop open slightly when connecting it to the display. They said it was something to do with cooling. It didn't sound right to me. I'm sure that Apple didn't solely intend for the Cinema Displays to be used by Mac Pro and Mac Mini users.
There must be a simple way to "dock" or connect a Mac laptop (Macbook Pro or Macbook) to an Apple Cinema display or any other display with DVI input while keeping the laptop closed with an external keyboard and mouse connected and still be able to use the SuperDrive.
I'm very curious about how you handled this.
    All the best for now,
    Ambrose

  • How to turn a Macbook Pro into a second display for another Macbook Pro

So my school just gave me a Macbook Pro and I already have a Macbook Pro. I would like to know if I could turn my school Macbook Pro into a second display for my regular Macbook Pro. Thank You!
Both Macs are running Mavericks 10.9.4

If you need administrative access and it is denied to you, then there is no way, as ScreenRecycler and AirDisplay do need administrative access to be installed.

  • How good is a Macbook Pro with dual video cards for gaming?

I've been a PC guy my whole life (aside from my iPhone which I love). My gf has been pushing me to try out a mac and considering how my PC laptops have a pretty good track record of dying on me or encountering some other problems after a year or two, I can't help but consider making the investment. The only thing is, I'm a big gamer and usually get the latest games. I'm not super tech savvy though I do my research and get a sense of what kind of specs are better and worse.
In terms of gaming, I always assumed that more ram = better. In that sense, I'm a little put off that even the most expensive MacBook Pro only comes with 4 gigs of ram (which is what my year and a half old laptop has now) especially when it seems most newer laptops have 8 gigs minimum for a fraction of the price (and 16 gigs if you're willing to spend as much as you would on the most expensive macbook pro). Does RAM somehow work differently on a Mac or is it truly that little?
Also, how does the whole dual video card thing work, does that mean I'd be having the power of those two cards put together?
Personally, I've been leaning towards the Asus G53SX-NH71 because I can buy it for less than the cost of the cheapest macbook pro and as far as gaming purposes go it seems to have more power than even the most expensive Macbook which costs over double the price.
Am I missing something here? Do the dual video cards really bring that much to the table or for gaming purposes am I better off with a PC?
    Thanks.

I've been watching this forum for years, and I'll have to say that gamers are not a big group around here.  A few things.  First, getting 8GB of RAM for the MacBook Pro is cheap.  Most people either don't care, pay Apple to do it, or, like me, DIY.  The max you put in a MBP is 8GB, so no 16GB, unless you were looking at the iMac or MacPro.
Second, there is no dual video card in a MacBook Pro.  There is an integrated video card, an Intel HD3000, which shares RAM with the CPU, or a discrete video card, an AMD, various versions on different MBP's.  The Intel is for low battery usage.  The AMD is more powerful, and it's to be used when you've got power.  The video card has more applications than just gaming, but also in video and photo editing.
No one here is going to talk you into one platform or another.  If you are only going to game in Windows, then it's a waste to get a Mac.  If you're going to game in Windows but want the Mac side to do everything else, the build quality and elegance of the Mac will far exceed most products out there.  You can run Windows in Boot Camp natively, and as I understand, gamers love it, because the Mac is actually a better Windows machine than most Windows machines.  But I don't play games, so I have no proof.
So the choice is yours.  And we could argue all day long about the side by side comparison of a cheap Windows machine vs. the Mac.  You are using the price vs. price comparison that is a false dichotomy, ignoring how one values various features.  For example, the trackpad on a MacBook Pro far exceeds (and I mean light year exceeds) anything on any other laptop out there.
I spent 10 minutes answering your question.  I'm not debating you on x vs. y.  The choice is totally on what you're going to do.  Most of us are trying to contribute to the world, so gaming is low on the needs list.

  • Macbook Pro to LED Cinema Display

I just received a LED Cinema Display for Christmas, however my macbook pro doesn't have a mini display port which cable would i need to by as an adapter to attach my macbook prop to the mini display port cable.

Unfortunately, it's an expensive converter box that you need. There's at least two on the market that I am aware of.

  • Macbook Pro 13" with Retina Display for Photography work

    Hi All,
I'm looking at buying a Macbook Pro 13" with Retina Display with the following specs.
    2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB PCIe-based flash storage
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)
I need to use this mainly to edit RAW images as I'm a photographer and will be using this whilst onsite during a photoshoot. I have been advised that due to the graphics card, when using software like Photoshop, the laptop might slow down as it won't be able to handle the large files.
The only one that has a good graphics card is the MacBook Pro 15-inch: 2.5GHz with Retina display - with the following specs.
    2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz
    16GB 1600MHz memory
    512GB PCIe-based flash storage
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB
My issue with this model is the size and most of all the price. it costs 1000 more than the 13". Have any of you had the chance to use photoshop on the 13" version and how did you find it?
    Thanks

  • ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and Apple Cinema Display compatibility

I'd like to buy an Apple Cinema Display for my 5-year-old Power Mac G5 with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, but I'm having trouble understanding what I can and can't hook up to my system.
I was thinking of getting a 30" display, but the Apple Store says I need a Dual-Link DVI, which I don't think my graphics card supports, but the Store also says I need an ATI Radeon 9650 or better, which I imagine the 9800 Pro is.
I've looked at the ATI site for data on the graphics card, but their online manual shows a completely different set of connections on the card. They show VGA and S-Video out ports that mine doesn't have.
Does my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro have dual-link? If so, can I use the 30" display? If not, can I still use the 30" display?
If I can't use the 30" display, are there any compatibility problems with the 23" Apple Cinema Display?

The 9800 is faster than the 9650, but it doesn't have a dual-link DVI port.
Make sure you were looking at the Mac section of ATI's site. PC and Mac versions of the same card may have different port configurations.
AGP cards with dual-link DVI, starting with the fastest:
ATI Radeon X800 XT 256MB (ADC, dual-link DVI) (Some reports of problems with Leopard)

  • Purchased a 13.3 Macbook Pro and I got charged for softwares I didn't purchase.

Hi there.  I just purchased a Macbook Pro and I noticed two additional charges on my receipt for antiviruses that I DID NOT purchase. The sales associate told me that I would receive an antivirus software FREE OF CHARGE so I agreed. On my way back home, I looked at my receipt and there was a $2.99 charge for "KASPERSKY IS BOX 2015 3-USER" (SKU 1689012) and a $27.00 charge for "KASPERSKY IS 3 USER 6 MONTH"(SKU 5871467).  However, the Kaspersky software (SKU 1689012) was in my bag. But SKU 5871467 was not in my bag. I DO NOT want any of these softwares. I trusted the sales associate about my purchase so I didn't think I had look at the receipt before leaving the store. The sales associate LIED about the free antivirus software and charged me for software that I didn't even get. I don't want to travel 90 minutes back to store. Is there a way for me to get refunded for the software that I didn't purchase or receive. Thanks for your time.

    Hello incognito74,
I’m more of a PC girl myself, but for a while there, I was considering getting my hands on a new MacBook after using one for work a few years ago. While I didn’t end up getting one, I’m glad to see you made the leap and purchased the latest model! It’s disappointing to hear you run across some unexpected charges for an antivirus software though, especially after being told by a store associate it was a free offer at the time of purchase. I can imagine this quickly soured your excitement about buying such a nice product, so I appreciate you providing us the opportunity to look into this on your behalf.
Upon review of your purchase, it seems you purchased an Apple computer that offers a free 3-user, 6-month antivirus subscription software called Kaspersky. Technically, we’d consider this a bundle offer. As you applied a mover’s coupon to the purchase though, this could explain why you were ultimately charged for the subscription. This is because this particular coupon can only apply to a single item and not a bundle offer. In order to accommodate your exception request to use your coupon, it seems we had to ring up both your computer and your subscription separately, and the unexpected charge subsequently applied. I truly apologize if we failed to properly explain this at the time of your purchase, especially as it sounds like your “local” store is quite a distance away.
If you no longer wish to have the subscription and you haven’t opened the software, I’d suggest bringing it back into your local store for a refund under your 15-day Return and Exchange Promise. Having said this, I realize your receipt is showing two charges for the software. Please know that these two charges stem from the Kaspersky software you mention receiving, as this is how our systems typically process payment for these types of subscriptions. If the return is made, both of those charges should be refunded at that time.
    Respectfully,

  • My LaCie Firewire 800 hard drive, connected to my Macbook Pro via Thunderbolt Cinema Display port, disconnects after sleep

I have a LaCie RAID Quadra hard drive (two disks in a case set to a redundant array) which for all intents and purporses appears as a normal hard drive to my mac.
When connected directly via FW800 to my Macbook Pro (2011, with thunderbolt port), it works perfectly.
For the sake of convenience, and since I am using it only at home as my Time Machine drive, I connected it to the FW800 port on my Thunderbolt Cinema Display.  The display works perfectly in every way up until now.
When connected, the drive works great.  However, when I put the machine to sleep, upon awakening it, I receive the "Disk improperly ejected" error immediately upon the screen coming up.
The drive is set to Auto mode which has always worked fine in the past; putting the drive to sleep when the computer is asleep, etc.
So, I only receive the disk ejected error when it's plugged into the Cinema Display; not when directly plugged into the MBP.
I have the 1.1 firmware update applied to the monitor.
    Any ideas?  I appreciate it.

My desktop has two FireWire ports. In the first one I had my webcam plugged in. In the second one, the External Hard Drive. I unplugged the camera and used the first port for my External HDrive and now it works! So it seems the problem is a hardware problem with the port.
I'd check to see if the problem returns when you plug the camera back into the second port, or if the drive works in the original port when the camera is not connected.
Edit: Maybe you unplugged the problem, when you unplugged the camera?

  • 2008 Mac Pro and Apple Cinema Display 27"

Is there some sort of adapter that would allow me to plug the new Apple Cinema Display 27" with a 2008 Mac Pro? Or what change would I have to make to be able to work this out?

Adrian - did you end up getting an adapter and using it? I purchased the Atlona DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter (AT-DP200) to connect my 2008 MacbookPro (with GeForce 8600M GT) to the new 27 in. Cinema display, and though it works, it looks a bit fuzzy in terms of resolution. Having read the response here about making sure it is a DUAL link converter, I was going to try to return it for the AT-DP400.
Then I read another thread on here that seemed to indicate that the AT-DP400 would not work at all with the 2008 Macbook Pro.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2585380&tstart=0
So now I'm confused. Just wondering what your experience is, if you ended up with getting the display and converter.
