Macbook Pro and Toshiba HDTV Hooked up but no streaming

I hooked up the macbook to my Toshiba TV using proper cords purchased at BestBuy (Dvi and HDMI) I set the TV to HDMI and it displays the original wallapaper (the purple space scene - which is no longer my background) and that's it. I can have the netflix video playing on my laptop and nothing appears on the TV.
I don't have the TV manual any longer. I am running Snow Leopard.

The TV is being run as an extension to the desktop, meaning additional space to the normal screen and desktop. You will notice that you can move the cursor onto the TV from the MBP. Also, you can drag windows to the TV's desktop from the MBP's desktop.
If you open Displays Preferences and click on the Arrangement tab, you will see small blue rectangles meant to represent the two displays (MBP's built-in display and externally attached display). Note that one of the blue rectangles has a white bar across the top. This is meant to be a representation of which display has the menu bar (and Dock). You can drag that little white bar from one blue rectangle to the other. This will cause the real menu bar to move from your MBP's screen to the TV. Try that and the function of the two displays will flip flop, meaning you can now see Netflix on the TV.
Note that you can also rearrange the placement of the blue rectangles to be more in keeping with the actual arrangement of the displays. You can also turning mirroring on and off. With mirroring, the MBP's screen and the TV will both show the same thing, but not necessarily at the best resolution.

My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software.  I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.

This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it?

70 hours...  no, it's not normal but it can't hurt your Mac to be running for that amount of time.

I started using LT 4 and I have a serial number, also upgraded to LT 5 and have a serial number. Now I just bought a new Macbook Pro and installed the LT 5, but it doesn't accept my serial number. Why?

When you installed the Lightroom 5 on your MacBook, did it ask for both serial numbers. Since you purchased Lightroom 5 as an upgrade, you need both the serial number from your original purchase as well as the new serial number for Lightroom 5. If you have both of those numbers and they are still not being accepted then you will have to contact Adobe customer support for a solution.

  • Macbook pro and 720p hdtv

I've connected a mbp (17" high resolution, 256mb NVidia video recently purchased with Leopard) to a JVC HD-61G787 HDTV via Apple's DVI to HDMI cable. (FYI, the TV is 720p, not 1080p.) This configuration works in that I can see stuff on the TV screen, but unfortunately that's about all I can say for it.
If I set the TV resolution to 1280x720 (via the system preferences' display option), text is 'readable' but nothing to write home about. It's fuzzy and many characters appear to be colored red. It's also hard to distinguish between the letters "e" and "o", and "t", "f", "i", "l", ect.
If I set the TV resolution to 1920x1080 (interlaced), text is barely readable (forget about distinguishing beteewn the "e"s and "o"s et. al.) This does, obviously, afford much more 'screen real estate' to work with which is something I'm striving for.
Does anyone have advice on how to configure this so it's realistically usable? Some more FYI stuff: I downloaded JVC's user manual <http://resources.jvc.com/Resources/00/00/91/LCT2063-001D-A.pdf>, and let's just say it wouldn't be worth the paper it was printed on if it was printed. Further, the TV's menu system is completely pathetic; I could find no options in it that could be even remotely helpful in configuring the TV.

You need to go into System Preferences - Monitor and make sure that you have Mirroring set to On. This will exactly duplicate what you see on your MBP on the TV. The system should also automatically set the proper resolution on the TV.
Setting to Mirroring isn't necessary if it's run with the lid closed. Running with the lid closed is actually best because then the resolution will only be that of the TV and it won't have to pick one monitor's resolution or the other.
There is a way to have the clamshell closed while you're watching the TV, but you need to change a setting which escapes me at the moment.

so how is the picture when you connect it?
Well it should be a pretty nice full digital picture, if you go through HDMI. It will be like having another computer monitor. If you go through one of the other ports on the TV, like VGA or S-Video, the picture will be worse.

  • Working with Macbook Pro and Toshiba Satellite

My girlfriend and I are looking into a wireless router to extend the range of a router in a different area of the house. The previous router doesn't have reliable signal in our apartment/suite/room/whatever. My main questions are this:
Can I run an ethernet cable from the existing router, plug it into the Airport Express, and have it run that way?
My girlfriend's laptop (Toshiba Satellite, one of the newer models) runs Windows 7; will it be able to connect to the Airport Express? There's (obviously) no point in getting the router if it won't work with BOTH computers.
Is AirTunes as awesome as it sounds? I'm a big music guy and with my education-pricing/deal I got a free 8GB iPod Touch, anyone have any comments on how well the music streaming works?

Hello Riel. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can I run an ethernet cable from the existing router, plug it into the Airport Express, and have it run that way?
Yes. However, since you will effectively have two router in series, you will want to reconfigure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge.
My girlfriend's laptop (Toshiba Satellite, one of the newer models) runs Windows 7; will it be able to connect to the Airport Express?
Yes, it should. The AX supports wireless clients that are 802.11a/b/g/n capable, regardless of OS.
Is AirTunes as awesome as it sounds? I'm a big music guy and with my education-pricing/deal I got a free 8GB iPod Touch, anyone have any comments on how well the music streaming works?
In most cases it works pretty well. iTunes uses AirTunes to stream audio to either the AX or an Apple TV. It can also stream to multiple AXs simultaneously. iTunes uses the QuickTime Codec to convert any iTunes audio source to Apple Loseless, and then, uses AirTunes to locate, and then, stream to these devices. If you want to stream audio sources other than from iTunes there are other third-party products, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil, that will allow you to do just that.
On the audio receiving side, the AX audio port is a combination analog/optical digital interface ... so it will support either type of audio for either powered speakers or an audio receiver.

I discovered how to enter the track titles onto my newer MacBook Pro, and was so pleased!  But when I tried to do the same with the other laptop, it failed.
What I did, basically, was what the Apple Help suggested--choose iTunes General Preferences, etc.etc.  And yes, I did upgrade the old laptop to the newest iTunes version.
Am I just wasting my time here? Is there some reason why an older Mac Pro will not do what the newer one will, with regard to iTunes?
My older laptop is a 2.6 GHz Core Duo; it has 36 GB of "memory available."  The newer one  a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7. It has 284 GB of memory available.
Both are using the same version of Snow Leopard--10.6.8.

  • MacBook Pro and HDTV

So I've been looking into hooking up my MacBook Pro to my HDTV for a couple of small occasions. There's a question I have regarding mini-DVI. Supposedly it can't transfer any audio whatsoever. I was thinking of using a mini-DVI adapter so I could have an HDMI connection to the HDTV.
The thing is, I found out from several sources that regular DVI doesn't transfer any audio either but upon using a DVI to HDMI cable from my PC to my entertainment system (receiver), I got full 5.1 surround. Am I going to be able to do the same thing by trying out mini-DVI to HDMI for myself? Or is there actually 100% no way audio signals can go through mini-DVI.
    Thanks.

I just bought my macbook pro and it's charged up to 100% and is still plugged in but now shows the battery at 98%.  How is this possible when it's plugged in to the charger and the green light is on?

The system regularly lets the battery drop to about 95% when on the charger, then recharges to 100%.  This lets the batery exercise "just a little" all of the time and saves the recharge curcuits from overuse.
    Regualr occurence for me.
Also ... you need to let your battery work at least once per month.  Let it run down to 40%, but not less if you can at all avoid it.  Running thr battery fully dead will shorten the battery life significantly.
