MacBook Pro Color Gradient Issue?

Hey there,
I have a new MBP 15-inch with the LED backlit screen. Some sunset photos (with large areas of fine gradients), look pixely. I've seen the photos on a really nice CRT and there's no pixellation in the photos. They're 8 megapixel RAW files from a Canon DSLR.
Is this simply due to the LED screen's lack of color depth, or is my computer having issues?

I have the same problem here with my MBP (Mid-Summer 2007, 2,4 GHz, LED) and I pretty sure, that this started to appear recently and wasnt there from the beginning. I you look down from the top of your screen (in a very sharp angle) then the affected area where gradients look bad is looking blue colored. I attached a "screen shot" of the greek sunset and another picture and screen shots with the same issue.

MacBook Pro Bluetooth Mouse Issue - Possible Bug??

I recently purchased the new MacBook Pro and I have a weird issue with both the bluetooth Mighty Mouse and another Microsoft bluetooth mouse.
So first, I purchased the mighty mouse thinking it would work great with my new MacBook, however, after pairing it and turning up the scrolling to the highest setting it was still way to slow for movement across the screen requiring me to pick up the mouse and move it to get all the way across.
I had also installed Windows 7 on Parallels and was able to install my Microsoft Presenter Mouse 8000 on that with a dongle and it moved super fast just like I liked it. I had to use the dongle because for some reason Parallels didn't show the internal bluetooth. So I thought I would try using my Microsoft Presenter Mouse 8000 on the Mac side so I downloaded the Intellipoint 6.3 software that is made for mac and installed it on the machine then paired up my MS mouse. I then went in and set the settings to their highest settings for scrolling and once again I had the same issue as with the Mighty Mouse. Way too slow.
So then I took it to one of the Geek Squad guys at Best Buy in my area to see if he could figure it out and he was stumped as well. However, after playing with it a bit we discovered that if you went into the native keyboard/mouse settings in the system preferences folder and dragged the scrolling setting to it's lowest setting and then back to the highest setting the Microsoft Mouse would move super fast like it is supposed to. I got all excited, however, the problem is that as soon as you closed that dialog box it goes back to slow again. Weirdest thing ever.
So I have no idea what would cause that and would love some feedback from you all. I think it is a bug because in my opinion the Might Mouse should work better than anything else. Any thoughts anyone?

This problem can be caused because of the mouse pad. Try using a dark color one with no reflective glare. Sometimes the light bounces.

New Macbook Pro Retina Display Issue

Hi,
I just purchased a new Macbook Pro, 15" Retina Display, 16Gb Ram, 2.3Ghz and finally got my hands on it last week after more than 5 weeks of waiting.
I have a issue for which I wasnt able to find anything on either Google, or this or any other forum.
At one point, after succsessfully installing windows 7 through Bootcamp, I got a set of 4 differently colored vertical stripes going along my MBP screen, starting with a very dark blue stripe on the far right, purple slightly thicker, then a copy of the first blue stripe and at last the thickest stripe which is sort of a very transparent black overlay (around 10% black overlay).
I can think of nothing, deleted windows, it's partition & all that (not that I would've made a difference but I'm kinda desperate). I am including a screenshot (in which everything looks normal even though the stripes are there) and a photo I just took with my iPhone.
The 4 stripes now turned into 2 (at least visibly). the transparent one and the 3 colored ones joined together as black.
Anyone ever got a similar problem?

Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro random freezing issue

Hi all,
I had a 2009 13.3" Unibody Macbook and last week purchased a 13.3" Macbook Pro. I had installed 4GB of RAM in the MB myself, and it had worked fine for the month I owned it.
I backed up my MB with an external USB hard drive using Time machine, restored from this backup on my MBP and moved the 4GB RAM over.
When using the MBP I get random freezes lasting between 1 and 3 seconds, occuring every 5 to 30 minutes.
Could someone please advise a good way to diagnose this problem further? I am guessing it is not the RAM as it worked fine whilst in the MB.

I have an update!
I made an appointment with a local Apple Genius Bar and talked to a technian. He said it was neither the RAM nor the Hard Drive at fault.
His only thoughts were that a software issue was the root cause. I have been doing some serious investigating this morning and figured it out. Viewing system.log in Console shows:
SMS::infiniteIntTimerEventHandler ERROR: we have infinite interrupts, disabling
At exactly 5 minute intervals. These correlate with the freezes (to the second).
SMS refers to the Apple Sudden Motion Sensor. I disabled this by doing "sudo pmset -a sms 0" in Terminal, rebooted and everything is fine.
I have no idea why the SMS thinks the Macbook is falling every 5 minutes, but when it occures the hard drive heads are locked down to prevent damage, which is a perfect reason as to why iTunes would crash but Spotify (streaming internet music) does not.
Problem solved!

I did install EFI 1.7 update. I did not use the Migration assistance. At some point I will do a fresh install then pick and choose parts from a backup rather than using a full Time Machine Restore. This could still have been the root cause of the issue, but it is hard to tell.

Macbook Pro start up issue

I have a problem with a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 8gb ram, 500mb hard drive, Mavericks. The problem started when I loaded up about 100 tabs in Chrome for a long airplane ride.
It crashed and would book up to the flashing folder. My speculation is that I filled up the swap file and a memory leak or swap overflow corrupted the MBR. I was able to boot from the Internet recovery and verified my MacOS 10.9.1 partition, and all was well, but it would not reboot.
I was (and am) able to boot MacOS 10.7.1 (from a 2008 white Macbook) from an external USB drive. I did a lot of thrashing (multiple power off resets, etc), and sometimes was able to see the internal 500mb drive, and sometimes not. I tried to change the partition size to rewrite a new MBR (found this in a forum via Google) but the repartition failed.
Eventually I figured out to reset the boot using Startup disk. I thought all was well. I was able to do a poweroff reboot successfully. I relaunched chrome, it loaded ALL the tabs and crashed again. I worked through and was able to reset the boot disk again. Unfortunately it is not reliable, it still hangs and sometimes does not find the disk. Sometimes I can’t launch Internet recovery to launch.
I have a good time machine backup. (about 400mb). I have an external 320gb drive with 10.7.1 loaded from a white macbook. I have another external drive with 10.6 from a 2009 MBP, and a copy of 10.9.1 copied onto a SD Card.
Any suggestions on the root cause of the problem? Is it just a corrupt hard drive? Could it be a firmware issue? Could it be a hardware issue? If so, disk or motherboard, or ?

There is an option to Load All Windows when restarting an Application. I think it is under the General Tab in System Prefereneces. Un-Check that Option.
But the Flashing ? mark is a sign something else is going on. Just having the OS crash from an overload of an Application shouldn't then produce that ? mark alert.

Mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro battery shutdown issue when waking from sleep.

My unibody 17" MacBook Pro occasionally shuts down on waking from sleep when it isn't plugged in.
When I open the lid to wake it I can hear the hard drive and fans starting to spool, and then the next second it's off and silent. The laptop doesn't mind being turned on again after it does this and might go a week without doing it again, equally it might do it next time I try and wake it from sleep. It does this regardless of battery charge level.
coconutBattery says the battery still has 86% of its designed capacity, and I haven't noticed anything else untoward regarding battery charging or performance when in use.
So my question is two fold:
1) Does it sound like the battery's internal processor is malfunctioning, or could it be something else?
2) If it is the battery's internal processor, will replacing the battery replace the processor, or are they fitted separately (in defference to the 'internal' part of its name)?

I have had issues when i press the space bar from sleep, sometimes it wakes but others i'm forced to power it on with the power button.
Is this similar to anything you've experianced?
Its so inconsistantly these days, but i'm also connected to an external screen.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro - USB & Midi Issues

It all started when I recently bought a Pioneer DJM-900srt and switch from Traktor to Serato Dj. Now, I have been using my current Korg Nanocontrol for about 2 years problem free using manly Ableton Live 8 and Traktor Pro 2. Never needing to download any drivers and/or control editors. Fast forward to recently. Unknown to me at the time Serato Dj had some known issues with Midi mapping (that i should of researched more) but I went ahead and downloaded the latest Korn Nancontrol driver and control editor. Thinking 1) It might solve my Serato Dj problem and 2) what could it hurt? The second turned to be a nightmare.
So before I downloaded the driver and control editor I could plug in and unplug any of my midi usb devices, audio interfaces and Dj mixer in no specific order and at anytime and every thing would work and midi map as it was meant to. However, after downloading the driver all **** broke loose. While the driver was on my laptop none of my listed midi devices would connect properly and half the time the program would fail or just not open. I know you're not Allen & Heath but I also tried to download the latest driver from their website for my non working Xone 1D; Ableton, Serato Dj and Audio/Midi setup in utilities just will not open so i cant even tell if the midi devices are functioning properly. So I went on and deleted the Korg driver, editor and the Xone 1D driver.
After deleting the drivers and Korg control editor things now somewhat work but far from how they should. In order for things to function somewhat properly I must turn on the devices in this exact order. Turn on the computer and let it fully boot up. Plug in via USB to my laptop and turn on the Djm-900srt. Plug in my USB 7 port extender (with power supply) plug in my Korg Nano and my Maschine Mikro into the extender and turn it on. Boot up Ableton to quickly check if the devices mounted properly. Open up either Traktor or Serato and rock the house. The Allen & Heath Xone 1D has been dead in the water since the initial Korg Driver instal.
I can get screen shots of anything if it will help after work today. Around 5pm CST

Mid-2010 MacBook Pro Safari/Graphics issue??

Hi. Below I've posted a picture of what I've been experiencing on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro that is running Mac OS X Lion (10.7.1).
Usually, my screen stays like that for a few seconds, then those little things go away. However, when I took the screenshot, my screen stayed like that for about 20 minutes. I've had this issue in both Safari and Firefox. Even updating to 10.7.1, this still happens.
What could possibly be wrong? Is it a bug with Lion or is my graphics card at fault?

nope — one reason why the cost of Apple products in the US is low compared to prices in other countries is that the prices in other countries often include seller’s warranties which extend beyond the manufacturer’s warranty; that’s not the case in the US.
If you’re intent on purchasing no more Apple products because of how they’d handled the 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro defect, then I’d highly recommend writing a letter to Apple explaining exactly why you’ve made that decision.

MacBook Pro 13" Screen Issue Question

Hey guys
I have this strange area on my MacBook Pro screen that is noticalby brighter than the rest of the screen. I've tried using the screen capture function, but the patch doesn't show up on that images generated. Here's a photo i took with my iPhone

It's the area near the centre of the photo where the issue is present. It is easier to see on the photo if you move away from the screen, so you're further away, then it stands out more. However i can see it clearly when using the MBP on my lap or on a table.
My MacBook is still in warranty, so my questions are:
A) Should i take my machine to the Apple Store to show them the issue?
B) What are they store likely to do, will they replace the screen, replace the machine or simply turn me away and tell me the issue doesn't warrant action?
Even though it might seem like a small issue, once i see it whilst working my vision is drawn to it, so i lose focus on the rest of my screen.

Thanks for you response, I just want to check you're seeing the same error i am, i know the photo looks like there's a large area with a different brightness, but that's just because of the way I was positioned when taking the photo.

MacBook Pro 17-inch issues with Mavericks

I have just installed (twice) the new Mavericks on my MacBook Pro 17-Inch from late 2011. Sporting the 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM. Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB.
All that being said, it's running a bit slow (seems to be a commin issue). But that's not why I'm posting. My question is a permissions issue. I have since run permissions fixes since installing, and yet, I'm being told, for example from iTunes, "The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this folder." Then iTunes, expectedly, just shuts down. And for Photoshop CS5, "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred. Photoshop will now exit". InDesign opens, but so slowly, it's effectively useless. I go to quit out, and it hangs up trying to shut down. Illustrator is the same; opens slowly, hard to work with, seems to crash while shutting down. My first install, Safari wouldn't even launch. Now it seems to launch okay and function okay.
So, anyone have any idea why my permissions seem to be borked?
As an aside, before I upgraded, I did have problems with preferences being saved in Safari and LinoType font utility.
Thanks for any input that might help me out. I have lots of freelance art to do, and right now, no machine to do it with.

If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:

2009 15" MacBook Pro Hard Drive Issues

Hey everyone,
I'm having some trouble with my mid 09' 15" MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz, 8GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive running 10.7.2. Recently, my hard drive failed and I have AppleCare so it was replaced for free. The computer came with a 250GB drive which means it had to be replaced with a 250GB drive from Apple.
I work for an Authorized Apple Reseller (privately owned - not corporately owned apple store) and they can complete machine repairs here and they ordered/replaced the apple drive for me.
Here is my issue: I am a film/video production student and as a result I do a lot of video editing/web design. My 250GB hard drive is no match for working with a lot of HD quality video, it's a space hog! I'm very technically savvy and an replace RAM and hard drives in machines myself since I work for an Authorized Apple Reseller. I've purchased internal 500GB drives to replace my 250GB drive so I can have more space to store/work with video.
My machine can't seem to read or work with any 500GB internal drive I purchase and install. I've used 2 different Western Digital 500GB 5400 RPM drives, a Seagate 500GB 7200 RPM drive and even a Hitachi 500GB 7200 RPM drive. I've used Carbon Copy Cloaner to copy my information from current 250GB drive to the new 500GB drives and they will boot but they run like crap! They will work....I attempt to open an application and i get the rainbow spinning wheel of death and the machine will then freeze for 5 minutes. I can use it again for 30 seconds after which it freezes again for another couple minutes and this just goes on and on.
I've also tried installing Snow Leopard fresh onto the drive and manually moving my content over via an external drive or something. Same result! I couldn't even install Snow Leopard completely without the install failing.
None of the service techs at my work can answer my problems, they've never seen it before. AppleCare was no help on the phone. Also, my machine passes all of Apple's service diagnostics.
Can anyone think of anything else I haven't done to help me?! I would really appreciate it!

Have you replaced the SATA cable to the hard drive?
Can I suggest you consider external storage for your video production?
No matter how big a drive you install in your MacBook Pro it will quickly fill up.
There are a number of external drives available specifically built for video editing.

MacBook Pro Audio Jack Issues

Hi guys,
So I’m having a really odd issue with my 2009 MacBook Pro 15”. Specifically an issue with my headphone port and my normal 2.1 Logitech speaker system.
I am hearing a buzzing/static/humming (can’t decide) noise from my external speakers when the headphone jack is plugged in. Without performing any action on my Mac, the sound will start, last for about 20 seconds and stop.
I can also manually manipulate this interference issue by doing a few things, like playing audio from a website/media player; watching videos with a media player or opening any site and allowing a flash file to play (YouTube). These actions seem to manually start this strange sound.
Now for the fun part. Whilst the headphone jack is plugged in, removing my HDMI and Ethernet cables seem to stop the noise completely. Touching the outer port with the HDMI or Ethernet will make the sound return. And when I remove the headphone jack and hold the connector with one hand and touch my MacBook Pro with the other, the sound gets louder - more noise.
I have also tried headphones, I can still hear the buzz It’s just not as loud.
I’ve read that this could be a grounding issue. I’ve unplugged everything and changed MBP chargers. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is different HDMI and Ethernet cables.
Any ideas?

This noise you hear when you have coming from the 3.5mm jack sounds to me like it could indeed have something to do with a grounding issue. I would look at the information in the following article about that, named:

MacBook Pro Earth Hum Issue: Fairly certain I know the problem, I could just use some advice.

Been a MacBook Pro user for almost a year now. I had an issue with my charger a couple of months ago, as it got a split (my own fault) and despite trying to a DIY job, I thought a new one would be best. However, since it was only one part of the charger, I thought I'd try looking for just the part in question. So I went to eBay, which in hindsight was probably a terrible idea. 99.6% feedback, UK seller and at the time, quite good reviews from other buyers. Everything seemed pretty good. However, in less than a month, not only is the charger visually deterioating (something that in a year, I never experienced on my original charger) and worse, I'm getting a buzz when it's plugged in, most notably when I have headphones in (also never happened on my original charger). Unplug the charger, it goes away. Both my V-Modas and Earbuds work fine on other devices. The earbuds are terrible with the buzz. So I tried my old, DIY-fixed charger and low and behold, the buzz disappeared.
Not only that, but I've got two, albeit very very small, shocks from this charger. I've stopped using it now and went back to the old charger that whilst works, isn't in the best condition. Going to have to get a new one ASAP.
My question, mainly, is would it be safe to assume a brand new charger direct from Apple, or from PC World (a local authorised seller) would work without any of these issues? Secondly, do we think that perhaps the "genuine" charger I was sold is far from it? The quality is flimsy compared to the original one I got, which doesn't seem fitting. Could I have a bit more than a simple 'broken product' dispute on my hands?

Yep, that's the one. That seller has agreed to refund it upon testing.
Also, having spoken to AppleCare, my original charger (with the cable tear) could still be replaceable under warranty, so I'm getting that looked at tomorrow.
