MacBook Pro + External Dual Monitors?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro and I want to connect to 2 external monitors (Dell/Asus). Is this possible? Don't want a mirror either, just an expanded visual. Please link any relevant connectors that might be good if its possible. I've looked at previous forums but some haven't been able to give the answers I needed.

The two monitors there have the same hook ups. HDMI, DVI, and VGA.
If you plan on watching videos or playing games on one of these monitors i would advise using the connection off of my first link.
The second link would before anything that would not be graphically intensive, whether Internet browsing or word processing.
You will also need either a dvi to dvi or dvi to hdmi.

  • Macbook Pro to dual monitors

Hi. I need to connect my 2009 macbook pro to 2 DVI monitors and i only have 1 thunderbolt port at my disposal. I also need to maintain screen quality on both monitors as i'm working with graphic design software. Esentially i'm after a thunder port cable with a dual dvi cable connector or similar solution. Any ideas?

Your machine actually has a mini Displayport, not a Thunderbolt port.  And as far as I know, there is no way to drive more than one display with that.  If you had a newer Mac with Thunderbolt, you could drive more than one external monitor.

  • Macbook Pro 2014 dual monitor with Displayport daisy-chain

    Hello
Is there a good dock where you can daisy-chain Displayport 1.2 monitors? For example:
[Macbook Pro 13 retina 2014] ---- thunderbolt cable ----- [ideal dock!] ---- Displayport cable ---- [Monitor] --- Displayport cable --- [Monitor]
I don't want to buy an Apple monitor - I've got two good Dell units.
If so could someone suggest a good unit?
    Thanks,
    Andre

I have almost exactly the same problem. I used to have a 12inch PB G4 that worked beautifully on my DVI KVM switch (ATEN CS-1762 on a Samsung LCD), but my new MacBook Pro has a lot of trouble.
Initially all my windows were squashed and moved toward the lower part of the screen after switching the focus away from the MBP and back. Even worse, sometimes the MBP did not recognize the display change and gave me a 640x480 screen. As far as I figured out my KVM switch is emulating a standard VGA monitor when the focus is on the other machine, which seems to confuse the MBP. When this happens the display panel shows "KVM Monitor" as screen name instead of "SyncMaster".
This got frustrating pretty quickly, so I updated the firmware of my KVM switch. Now 80% of the time everything is fine, i.e. the resolution is normal and all the windows are in their correct position. 10% of the time, I still get 640x480 (less often than before), but another 10% of the time the MBP screen auto-detection gets so messed up that only unplugging the KVM switch will get it to show anything either on the internal or external display. Even worse, a couple of times I had to power-cycle to recover from this weird state.
I looked around for a fair bit, but haven't found any solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • How to connect an external monitor to macbook pro. The monitor has no usb connector without a usb

How to connect an external monitor to macbook pro. The monitor has no usb connecter, only a port.

Most MacBook Pro models have a Mini DVI port, a Mini DisplayPort or a ThunderBolt port for connecting an external display. USB does not have enough bandwidth to support a responsive display connection.
What model MacBook Pro do you have, by year, CPU speed or MacBook Pro 3.1 designation?

  • Can my Early-2011 Macbook Pro support dual DisplayPort monitors?

I have an Early-2011 Macbook Pro that Apple states can support two Apple Thunderbolt displays in series (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5219) but I can't find any information on running two DisplayPort displays in series. I assume that Thunderbolt uses DisplayPort 1.2 which includes the link capabilities but I am not sure as I don't really understand the difference between DP and TB that well.
The displays I would be looking at using are the Dell U2414H (http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&cs=aubsd1&l=en&s=bsd& sku=391-BBNC&redirect=1) which have DP in and out options.
Does anyone know if this will be possible? I don't really have a way to test this myself unfortunately.
    Cheers.

I'm curious if you got this configuration working as I'd like to use the same setup (early 2011 MacBook Pro 17" + dual Dell U2414H through daisy chaining the MacBook Pro Thunderbolt port through the monitor displayports).
Apple says you can only have a DisplayPort monitor (Mini Display Port in this case), at the end of the chain, with a Thunderbolt device in between.  I'm hoping this is either outdated or just not fully supported but still works.

    23. How do I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac when I have other Thunderbolt devices connected?
When connecting a Mini DisplayPort display or a display using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt peripheral (except as described in question 24), make sure the display is connected at the end of the Thunderbolt chain. You can use only one Mini DisplayPort device in the Thunderbolt chain.
Note: Systems with more than one Thunderbolt port, like an iMac, can have more than one Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor connected with a Mini DisplayPort adapter connected as each Thunderbolt port can support one Mini DisplayPort display.

  • Basic questions about macbook pro + external monitor

    Hi,
I have some very basic questions about using a Macbook Pro + external display. I don't actually have them but need to know how things works.
    So, here they are:
    1) Can I use the external display as the main display?
    2) Will the external display run with its resolution or with that of the mbook pro?
    3) Somewhere I read that you cannot keep the macbook pro open and get the full resolution of the external display. Is that true ?
    4) Is it dangerous to keep the mbook closed while using the external display?
    5) Does the usage of the external display impact on mbook performance?
I know...a lot of questions , but would be nice if someone could help me.
    Thanks.

Hi - I am presently using an external display.
To answer your questions in sequence:
    1. Yes you can use the external display as your main display. The way to enable that mode is to put your MacBook Pro to sleep, attach the external display. Wake up your MBPro with the lid closed and you will see the external display as you main display. You can alternatively set the external to "Mirror" your notebook by using preferences/display.
    2. The external display will run at its resolution although you can adjust and calibrate it using Preferences/Display.
    3. Not true. You get max resolution on both displays. Of course you may have to tweak as mentioned above.
    4. Not at all. I use this mode all the time. Just make sure you initially set up as mentioned above and your LCD on the MBPro will stay off.
    5. I have not seen any performance degradation whatsoever.
    Hope this helps.

Can you WIRELESSLY connect a macbook pro to a monitor to have extra work space on a separate screen from your macbook? (not mirror, extra monitor/workspace)
    It needs to be wireless.
I am not asking about mirroring, but as a second screen.
Apple tv communties said the Apple tv cannot do this, but maybe another type device can?

My thunderbolt port stopped working on my late 2011 MacBook Pro rendering my external monitor useless--or so I thought.
Mac Genius suggested using the Apple TV via AirPlay Display as a $100 solution. Took me all of 6 minutes to figure this out as there are no directions in the Apple TV box supporting this. But, it does work and I am now back in business.
PS. Don't set up with bluetooth--seems logical but you want to use AirPlay Display under Settings > Displays.
Also, I originally thought my external monitor stopped working because I upgraded the OS. This time, it was definitely a hardware issue and not software. It also fixed a known sound issue my monitor had with Macs. First time in my 15 years I've ever had a ViewSonic have issues with an Apple product, too. Thanfully, it is now fixed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using MacBook Pro as a monitor for video camera using HDMI

I want to connect my Canon 70D to HDMI port on MacBook Pro so that I can use the MacBook Pro as a monitor while shooting video with the camera? AppleCare unable to provide a solution.  Is there a way to do this....and/or an app for that?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external display. To do this, you need that Target Display mode is included in the firmware, and this is only available on iMacs.
However, you can still use your MacBook Pro as an external display for another Mac by using ScreenRecycler

  • CAN I TURN MY MACBOOK PRO INTO A MONITOR?

Help I want to turn my Macbook Pro into a monitor for my Playstation 2 so that way I can record on my screen using quicktime. please help I used a vga adapter from apple a AV to vga converter, and is their any way for me to use an iphone on a mac to play ios games while recording?

I don't think you can without some sort of capture card (very expensive, and because most MacBook Pros don't have a card, you need to use the FW800).  MBP's Thunderbolt port only sends video signals out, you can't attach an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable from your camera to the MBP and expect to show video.
You could try a utility like Sofortbild.

Can I use my Macbook Pro as a monitor for my G4 tower? I am trying to see if the existing monitor I have is causing my kernal panics on my G4 tower....

Monitors don't typically cause kernel panics. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.
Open your Console application and locate the last panic log entry. Copy it and post here. Perhaps we can help if you provide more information about your kernel panics.
