MacBook pro fails to wake up after opening the lid

My MacBook pro screen lights up briefly after opening the lid from a sleeping status.  However the screen then turns off and the only remedy is to force a shutdown by holding down the on/off button and then restarting it.

My "nearest" local Apple Store is almost 40 km far from where I live...It's clearly a softwere problem and yes, It's not new for Apple. I hope they consider this annoying problem and fix it as soon as possible. I also noticed that doing a "Verify Disk" via Disk Utility an error accours by checking the free space of the HDD. It's suggested to repair the disk immediatly (bold red alarm pops out ) rebooting the system and using the tools under the CMD-R startup. By the way, ignoring the problem and by just verify the disk again, the error maigcally disapper into the void...that's weird !
I hope somethings will come out, I'm really, really annoyed by this problem and i don't want to run in some data loss or HDD failure because i really need my Mac for work (as, i think, most of us )!

Just a final question about Sleep mode - does this have any negative effects on the life or performance of the laptop? I'm so used to Shutting down the laptop each day that I worry about Sleep mode having some sort of drain on the components or something.
There are only two practical differences between Sleep and Shut Down:
    1. Sleep will wake instantly, so you don't have to wait for startup.
    2. Sleep will drain a new, fully charged battery after several days without being woken or plugged in. If you shut down, the battery charge lasts much longer. Obviously, if you only sleep it overnight, you'll still have plenty of battery left in the morning.
Don't sleep it more frequently than necessary, though. Frequently turning the backlight and hard drive off and on can shorten their life. Just do what's reasonable. I usually leave mine awake until I have to transport it in a bag, along with sleeping it overnight. On battery, I'll sleep it more often to preserve battery.

  • My MacBook Pro screen turns off when I open the lid!

This has been driving me nuts, and also apparently Apple as well.
When my MacBook Pro is connected to a power adapter, if I close the lid it sleeps like a good little Mac. When I open the lid, the display comes on instantly. Then after about a second, it goes black. The LED backlight turns off. I can get it to come on using either of two ways: 1) touch either of the brightness buttons, or 2) remove and replace the power connector.
Now, here is the weird part: it only seems to do it when I am logged in as me. If I login as guest, it doesn't happen. That would seem to imply it is something about my profile that causes it to happen. So I whacked ~/Library/Preferences and it still happened. So where is this particular bit of nastiness hiding?

OK, so I think I solved my issue.  It was caused by the system not going to sleep (The screensaver thing was a dead end).
When I ran the console app pmset, I got something like this:
    ➜  ~  pmset -g assertions
    12-06-29 9:11:06 AM EDT
    Assertion status system-wide:
       PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep             0
       CPUBoundAssertion                       0
       DisableInflow                           0
       ChargeInhibit                           0

       NoRealPowerSources_debug                0
       UserIsActive                            0
       ApplePushServiceTask                    0
The process that was causing PreventSystemSleep to be 1 was "org.cups.cupsd" which is the print service.  So I checked all my printers, one of them was "In Use".  When I opened it, there weren't any jobs listed.  I went through the options and selected Jobs > Show Everyone's Jobs and sure enough there was a job there.  I deleted it and everything seems to work now.
The odd thing is that print job was probably from my other account which didn't seem to have this screen problem.  Anyway, I hope this helps anyone out there....

  • Won't Wake Up After Opening The Lid

This has been happening for awhile now (checked with my father in law, who has a macbook pro, and he says the same thing happens to his): I close the lid, it goes to sleep. When I open the lid again, half the time it'll wake up, and half the time it won't (even pressing buttons, etc). I'll have to hold down the power button to turn it off, then press it again to turn it on and start up from scratch, losing whatever I was working on. There's seemingly no rhyme or reason to it...but it happens about half the time. The other thing I notice, when this happens, is that the "sleep" light (that is usually flashing when it's sleeping normally) turns on solid when I close the lid rather than flashing, and turns off when I open it.
Anyone else have this problem? Any way to fix it? I have the newest firmware.

  • My macbook pro doesn't wake up after sleep

my macbook pro doesn't wake up after sleep

I'm having the same issue. I've had my logic board replaced twice now, which I did last week and then Monday I had to take it to a Genius Bar again because my hard drive cable was malfunctioning. I don't know why it's happening but I'm really starting to get frustrated with my machine. I bought my MacBook Pro brand new last year in September and ever since I've dropped it in November, it's been really glitchy. After I dropped it, I had to replace my Logic board, graphics card, and hard drive and they covered it.

I have a MacBook Pro and tried to download and open the torbundle package. I get a message that reads "A copy of firefox is already running. Only one copy of firefox can be open at a time."
    1. I do not seem to have firefox anywhere of my computer. Ive been using safari and as far as my computers library is concerned there is no firefox.
    2. I have tried shutting down and restarting.
    3. I tried making a new user account.
I believe the torbundle package is trying to open itself twice. Has anyone had this problem when trying to use tor on OS X?
This is getting very frustrating! Help please!

  • Power up Macbook Pro with 23" Cinema Display without opening Laptop lid?

    Hi there,
I've just bought an Apple 23" Cinema display to use with my Macbook Pro.
I just have a quick question for working this setup. I'd like work with just the 23" display in use (i.e. laptop lid closed, due to desk space), but can't figure out how to turn on the Macbook Pro without opening the lid to the laptop for the power button!
This may sound like a silly question and I may be overlooking something as I've only had the setup for a hour, but it'd be a major pain in the ar*e if I had to open the laptop to turn it on every day, then close the lid again (and possibly go through the 'Are you sure you want to go into sleep mode...' process each time).
Can I avoid opening the laptop when connected to the 23" display? There is a power button on the display, but it only seems to put the Mac into sleep mode when it's already on, i.e. it didn't seem to work when I tried to use it to turn the Mac on from being off.
Thanks for any advice on this.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro go to sleep when I close the lid?

All of a sudden, my MacBook Pro has stopped going to sleep when I close the lid. Instead, the indicator light on the front stays on steadily. When I then open the lid, I am asked to log in again, but before I can type anything, the window goes completely black. My only choice at this point has been to hold the power button down long enough to shut the laptop off. Then I wait a minute or so before restarting. Is there a setting I need to check to prevent all of this from happening? I have tried restarting in Safe Mode, then restarting normally, but still the laptop will not go to sleep when I close the lid.

Some process is impeding the sleep function. Since you've tried rebooting and it persists, check and see if Time Machine is hellbent on completing a backup, cause it can have that effect.

  • MacBook Pro failing to start up after fairly recent 10.8.4 update. Just grey screen with Apple logo displayed and then hangs.

After having to do a forced shut down (holding down power button) due to freezing I cannot again progress past the grey screen with the apple logo. The spinning cog comes on at first then disappears leaving just the apple logo (in case that is sognificant).
I have tried to find a solution through the support pages but have unfortunately been unsuccessful in my endeavours so do apologise I have overlooked the obvious and would really appreciate some help. I've just started the second year of my Uni and the timing couldn't be worse.
    I have tried the following:
    1) held down option and started in "recovery 10.8.4" from which I used disk utility to "repair disk", which at first needed some repairs and then I ran it again for the second time to confirm it had a clean bill of health.
    2) I then ran "repair disk permissions" and repeated a second time to confirm it was all working well (however one error remained "warning: SUID file "system/library/CoreS... has been modified and will not be repaired" but have read that this should not be a big problem) After which I tried to start up again and it hung with the apple logo on the grey screen.
    3) tried resetting the PRAM by holding down cmd+option+P+R before powering up, but it only chimes once and then restarts the mac, then chimes once and repeats the process again in and endless cycle.
    4) I then tried 1 and 2 again and then tried to reinstall OSX 10.8.4 from the recovery mode, but this came up with the message "could not find installation information for this machine".
    5) I tried starting up in safe mode by holding down shift after the chime at startup but safe mode did not start after leaving it 3 hours.
    6) I tried starting in verbose mode with cmd+V but after running the script it reverts back to the grey screen.
I hope I have explained it in enough detail and appreciate any direction or thoughts as to it being salvageable and what to try next.
    Many thanks

    Eric
Thank you for taking the time to post those links to informative articles.
In relation to the first article entitled "Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck"
I can confirm that i was not able to start in safe mode but was able to boot up in recovery mode and run disk utility. The only one i hadn't tried is fsck.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but if from what I understand by the article, this is to be used if I could not run disk utility, with which I have been able to do and to repair both the disk and permissions. But again, if I've missed the obvious from that article please correct me.
Te second article entitled "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" identifies troubleshooting that should be carried out in safe mode. However I am unfortunately unable to start in safe mode and have not been able to progress past the apple logo since this problem started.
Thank you for both links and for taking the time to share. If though I have missed something more significant in this regard I would appreciate your feedback.
    Many thanks

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report.

  • MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo reboots after I close lid

I have a MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.9. It's about 6 months old. For the last couple of months, I've noticed that every once in a while, when I close the lid, moments later I hear the reboot chime. If I reopen the lid, I see the machine booting up. Any unsaved work is lost. It happens maybe once every week or two and I do not know how to reproduce the behavior.
A little googling shows that I'm not alone; others have experienced this problem. See
    http://forums.macnn.com/69/powerbook-and-macbook-pro/335828/mbp-spontaneously-re starting/
    and
    http://www.apple-discuss.com/viewthread.php?tid=382
I haven't seen any threads discussing this problem here on Apple's discussion board. Is the problem acknowledged by Apple? Is any fix known? Should I take my laptop in for service? Will Apple help me if the problem is not reproducible?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've had this happen about 3 times in the 3 weeks i've had the computer. This morning when it happened, i lost about an hour's worth of typing in MacJournal. You don't need to save in MacJournal, it saves everything if you set it too, like Sticky notes. Unless the computer crashes apparently. Due to this happening, i ended up finding a great keystroke recording backup program called BackTrack, but i digress.
Now that you mention it, i will have to pay attention to whether it's always plugged in to the power adapter when it does this, because something i've noticed several times, though intermittently, is that sometimes when the power adapter gets pulled on, or comes loose, the display dims a little. That's never happened on any of my other previous 3 laptops. I CAN reproduce that, i did reproduce it when it happened tonight, though it doesn't always happen. But the dimming may be a sign that the computer wants to go to sleep or temporarily shut off. I know there are some serious problems reported with the (otherwise very cool) magsafe adapters--I read so many reports of adapters that suddenly after several months of normal use, would spark, disintegrate at the junction wiht the computer, become hot and melt, and other things of that nature. If you look up the magsafe adapter in the apple store and read the user reviews, more than half report such problems.
So maybe this is related to the random spontaneous reboots. I've never had a computer do this before either. Has anyone noticed if there's any pattern in terms of it being plugged in or not?
