Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Help to speed up my MacBook Pro.
By slower you mean starting up slower or during regular operation slower?
Login Items;
Over time, as you install more programs, they may be running at startup (login). Check what items are set to start during login.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Users & Groups.
Click your account’s name, and then click Login Items. Select the ones you dont want and hit the minus bar to delete from launching during log in.
For normal running processes;
Use Activity Monitor to see what processes and apps are using a lot of resources and then troubleshoot from there as to why certain programs are taking up more resources than normal.

4.84 GB Page-outsIf you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; { system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; PC "cron configuration" /e*/cron*; o=$(crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "User cron tasks"; PC "Global launchd configuration" /e*/lau*; PC "Per-user launchd configuration" ~/.lau*; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist") || ID=; ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal. Please note:
☞ Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted.
☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
☞ If you don’t have a password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
☞ Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty. Step 1 will always produce something.
☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
☞ Remember to post the output. It's already in the Clipboard. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of either command, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
☞ Don't post the contents of the Terminal window.
☞ Don't paste the output of Step 1 into the Terminal window. Paste it into a reply. -
My Macbook Pro gets slow the longer I use it?!
Hi everyone, recently my MacBook Pro 2011 has been very slow. It started acting up about a week ago after I left my laptop on stand by mode for a while and when I returned to using it, the laptop was really slow, significantly slower compared to before. I restarted it and everything seemed fine but after using it for about 20 to 30 mins it starts to get slow again... As the result, I have to restart my laptop every 30 mins or so if I want to use it smoothly, but really... its very annoying having to restart it all the time. The symptoms are lag, slow application launch, applications not responding and A LOT of rainbow wheel...
I have verified and repaired the permission and the drive in the Disk Utility but the problem persists. Does anyone have a solution for this problem? Your help is very much appreciated. Thank you. Here it is:

MacBook Pro getting slower and slower
My MacBook Pro has been slowing down, to the point of "click... wait 60 seconds... click... wait 60 seconds".
Around 8 weeks ago, headed on in to Apple Store, to find my Hard Drive was dead (we actually watched it die completely once they hooked it up to their network to try and save my stuff, that was the last straw for it). One new Hard Drive later and I've been happily enjoying my much faster Mac. Until the last week.
It's worse when I try and use AirPlay - extending desktop to TV to watch a movie, that just kills it.
I've run Disk Repair. I've cleaned out any start up items I could find. I know I probably could do with some more RAM, and I'll do that when the budget allows.
I used to be able to run InDesign, Illustrator, VLC, Word, Safari, AirPlay and Mail at once no issues - now it struggles with two tabs in Safari. Have I killed another hard drive?

I upgraded to Lion on my 20011 15" 2.0GHZ Quad Core MacBook Pro. The machine crashed at least 7 times (reports forwarded). I upgraded to 10.7.1 hoping for the crashes to go away. It began to crashed once a week. On checking the console reports Virus Barrier and Kaspersky (****!) used with Parallels seemed to be causing the crashes. Turn those puppies off and the crashes disappeared. HOWEVER, the computer is slow; opening mail seems 50% slower than on my MacBook 13". Today after spending 3 hours updating to 10.7.2, all apps seems to be dragging. Any ideas out there?
MichaelOK. Here's some test results. The most intense process I use on my Macs is using Handbrake to encode either DVDs or mkv files to mp4 files which generally pushes all cores to the max. I am using the latest 64bit version of Handbrake on both Macs.
So I took a sample mkv file of 65 seconds length and ran it using the same settings on both the Mac Pro (2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon 8GB RAM) and the Macbook Pro (2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 4GB RAM), straight after starting up both Macs so that there was plenty of RAM to spare on both. I ran the test two times on each Mac and got similar results both times, with the best results on each machine being as follows:
Mac Pro: max RAM used: 380MB, Time for encode: 102 seconds
Macbook Pro: max RAM used: 495MB, Time for encode: 84 seconds
This was for a 2-pass encoding with Turbo first pass to 2200kbps MP4 file from 720p mkv file.
So the Macbook Pro is coming in considerably quicker for this particular task. I'm not sure why the Mac Pro used less RAM, and whether this is the main factor in the time difference. Like I said, there was plenty of unused RAM on both Macs when I ran the test. I am no expert on the inner workings of Macs!
Needless to say though, I am happy with the results and very happy with the new Macbook Pro.

My MacBook Pro has slowed to a crawl. It started when I was printing off the internet. Now I get a "spinning ball" with many actions. Any help?

My MacBook Pro gets very slow while doing work like watching movies and using net .. video gets lag very often and while surffing on net it gets very slow ...
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -

What is DiskWarrior?
DiskWarrior is the safest, most technologically advanced, most powerful utility to eliminate directory damage available for any computer.
There are other utilities that do similar things.
Looking for login items is probably a better bet. You do this by opening System Preferences and then looking into Accounts. From there you should see a tab for Login Items. There will be some things you want to keep. iTunes helper and some other helper files are actually nice to have around, but you may have things that look like total sludge. Get rid of those. If you aren't sure, try to google the name of the program and you will likely get some more info about it before destroying it. -
RAM Used up quickly, Macbook Pro Becomes Slow
Over the past week or so I've noticed my Macbook Pro getting increasingly slower as the day goes by. Looking in activity monitor, my free RAM is often under a couple hundred MBs - and too often below 50MB. Figuring that I just had to clear up some inactive RAM left over from other programs, I purged the inactive RAM, but only to have it get used up again within minutes.
This hasn't ever been a problem to me in the past year that I've had my Macbook Pro, but now it becomes unresponsive very quickly. As an experiment, I booted up my laptop, and even then I had less than a GB of free RAM (never had that little upon bootup before). The only programs I have setup to start on boot are iTunes Helper, Caffiene, and Mail (Hidden). This hasn't changed in at least six months, so I know it's not one of these causing the RAM hogging.
Here is a log of my current Activity Monitor stats- after rebooting about an hour ago, the only programs I've opened were Chrome, iTunes, and Firefox. Everything was fine for a few minutes, then I noticed severe slow down and massive RAM loss, in addition to the cooling fans exceeding 6000rpm for a short while. Does anything here look abnormal?
*I should also note that I've verified the startup disk and repaired permissions, and the Page in/Page Out ratio is fine.

Ableton Live, a music production program, where ~500MB of RAM is needed to load some drum samples).
I had just installed Sophos Anti-Virus a few hours before my post, so that's probably running at startup along with a few others, which I will have to take a look at. Are there any other startup processes that you noticed that I should look into?
Lastly, I installed Final Cut Pro 7 about a week and a half ago. I only open it maybe three days out of the week, so I didn't think that's what would be causing it. However, there may be some background processes that are running even when the actual program isn't running. Can you spot anything like that?
updating the Mac OS X version was the fix for it.
I eventually will udgrade to Mountain Lion, but I would like to get this fixed first. I'm also looking at buying more RAM, but up until recently, 4GB was working fine. I couldn't have everything running, but the programs that I did have open ran fine.
Simple stop leaving program open that you are done using. Make sure you close the Program and not just close the window that the program is using. By default most Mac programs do not close when you close the window they are using. You have to manual close, Quit, those programs.
That's the thing though- I always close programs that I am not using (cmd+q, not just closing the window). I come from a Windows background, so closing a program entirely became a quick habit of mine! -
MY macbook pro is slow to start up after log in. any suggestions on where to start addressing the problem?
Delete any items in System Preferences > Users & Groups (or Accounts) > Login Items
Same for HD > Library > StartupItems
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Deskop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available.
Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space. -
My MacBook is getting slowe & slower, eventhough I run OnyX every week.
I also checked with fsck, but without success.
Any tips ??The machine itself is not slower but at this time it is performing more tasks than when you got it., So what has changed?
Are you running out of dosk space(how much free disk space do you have)?
Are you running more apps and running out of RAM?
What MacBook Pro model do you have?
What OS Version? -
MacBook Pro unusably slow while copying files over network
I have a 17" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo running at 2.33 ghz. I have a gigabit ethernet connection to my 1TB Time Capsule (which also provides my wired and wireless network services). However, when I copy files to the Time Capsule (simply drag and drop copy OR Time Machine backup) my MacBook Pro suddenly slows ways down and becomes almost unresponsive to the mouse--kinda like the network copy is taking up all the computer's resources. I move the mouse and maybe 10 seconds later the mouse pointer jerks across the screen and then stops. I literally can't do anything on my computer until the file transfer stops. This also happens when I copy to or from other Macs on the network.
It also happened before I switched to using the Time Capsule...i.e. when I was using a LinkSys router.
I'm running OSX 10.5.2.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to where I should be looking for possible solutions to this problem? Or is this quite normal? (surely not!).
Thanks in advance.Kappy: I think it's only 100mbps because Network Utility says 100mbps, and the router is (to the best of my knowledge) only 100mbps.
mindaugas: Thanks for the reply. I dont think the ports on it are gigabit as you said (source: http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/linksys-wrt160n/4505-3319_7-32815481.html "The Linksys WRT160N doesn't support the faster Gigabit standard for wired connection, nor does it have USB support"). Anyway, don't think it's overheating, since I'm not having any problem with resetting or dropped connections, just slow. Still, I'm starting to think it can't be much else other than a problem with the router somewhere. Taking it back isn't an option, but maybe I'll stick with it as long as possible and get a better router soon.
Just a thought, could this be anything to do with 802.11g devices connecting to the router as well? Or does this not matter? (Sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm no networking expert)
