Macbook Pro HardDrive problem

Hi, i didn't know where to put this question so I'm writing it here, hope someone can help me. Last week my Macbook Pro was so slow that I decided to restart it but when it started to shut down the programs wouldn't close so I had to force the shutdown (pressing the power button for more than 5 seconds) and when it turned on, it wouldn't load past the apple logo, i tried to check what was wrong and the utility disk said it was a problem in the "Macintosh Volume" and that it couldn't fix it, so I took it to a store (not an apple one but a licensed and supported by them) and I was afraid that I never made a backup so after many days they told me that they couldn't get the backup as they wanted, so they did it manually (supposedly folder by folder) and my HD had to be replaced so I told them to not delete anything from my old HD.
Yesterday I got my Macbook Pro and to my surprise it wasn't what I was expecting. Since other friends had similar issues with their Hard Drives and told me that after it was fixed, their desktop looked exactly as the day the problem started, meaning that they didn't lose any program. It literally looks like a new macbook with a folder dropped in the desktop with the documents i had, no programs at all, when I asked them why my programs weren't they claimed that it would be "useless to backup the programs." I was terrified at this point. But started to notice that some programs were actually there, but wouldn't open, iTunes, GarageBand, FinalCutPro X, Logic Pro and iPhoto to say some. I want to get my backup of my iphone that i had on my older iTunes but since they didn't copy correctly iTunes, it won't open it, also when the problem started I had Mavericks and my "new macbook" had Mountain Lion instead of Mavericks with a different user and password than the one I had (I already upgraded last night to Mavericks) but think that maybe they did something wrong?
I'm really desperate and want my macbook as it was last week before everything! I can't find my FinalCut Pro X projects in which I worked tons of hours and the iphoto events I had that I only saved on this macbook!!! Please tell me if there's anything I could make in order to have my Macbook like the past week! many friends told me that everything was there after they had them repaired, even the same user, wallpaper, password and everything. Here's what my "new macbook" looks like (literally it looks like they dropped what was on the external HD and wait it to copy) I'm hoping that they did something wrong so I can get my projects back! please help and thank you!

Do you have the original HDD that was in your MBP? If so, install it in an enclosure, connect it to your MBP via USB and see if you can open it and see your files.

How did you install Windows? Did you use Bootcamp Assistant or did you use a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox.
If you used Bootcamp Assistant, did you download and install the Windows Support software (drivers) in accordance with the Bootcamp instructions?

There is no additional peripherals except that I ordered from the apple store to upgrade my 1G still working memory SDRMA 667MHz

Macbook Pro Harddrive Broken?

Hi all,
I appreciate you're all busy people - but if you had a second, some advice would be brilliant. (Also - apologies in advance for being a hardly a tech genius).
I have a MacBook Pro (2010), not sure of which version of OS X, and during normal internet surfing crashed. On starting the machine back up I only got to the grey screen with apple logo and spinning grey wheel. A loading bar then appeared however only loaded a tiny bit before crashing.
I have no files/data I care about on the machine, I'd just love to have it working again!
Initial attempts made to rectify:
     - Safe Boot (Shift)
               - Unsuccessful
     - Resetting PRAM & NVRAM (P)
               - Unsuccessful
Last attempt
     - OSX Internet Recovery (Command-R)
               - Loaded Disk Utility, I then followed online advice about how to try to repair my hardrive, but the hardrive comes up in red coloured font on the left window                and says it cannot be repaired. I then tried to repair a part of it (I think) by erasing to zero out once which took about 2 hours, but still hasnt fixed the                overall problem I dont think.
My incredibly naive take on this is that my harddrive is knackered and needs replacing and I need to re-install an operating system. Is this correct? If so any idea which hardrive/how much it might be? (Also - I haven't got my previous copy of OSX - is it easy/cheap to get one??)
Any assistance would be brilliant.

Macs use regular 2.5" SATA IDE hard disk, so finding a replacement should be no problem. Try to remove the hard disk and get a similar size hard disk to make sure it will fit. Try to connect the hard disk to another computer, preferably a Mac. If possible, reformat the hard disk. Install the reformatted hard disk back (or new hard disk, if the old hd cannot be salvaged) then install new OS X. OS X 10.9 Maverick is free, 2010 MacBook Pro should be compatible.
However, if I remember correctly, there's problem with 2010/2011 MacBook Pro's heat sensor. The faulty sensor will shut down the Mac when it detect (falsely) an over-heat. If that's the case, try to find out if your MacBook is eligible for free replacement/repair -- since it's a motherboard problem, it'll be very difficult to repair by yourself.

Macbook pro harddrive is full.

I have a 3TB Time Capsule and for some reason it won't back up to the Time Capsule so instead it backs up to my internal harddrive on my Macbook Pro and it is now full. I know that there is a way to make your computer stop backing up to the local harddrive by typing something into the terminal but I can't remember what it is, can anyone help me?

If your Time Capsule isn't backing up properly, I wouldn't disable those local snapshots: I'd find the root (no pun intended) reason why the TC isn't working. I use Time Machine, but on an external drive, so I can't tell you much about TC. You might want to take a look at Pondoni's Time Machine FAQs at http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html. He has some information there regarding TC's and TM in general.
Rather than risk losing valuable data, I'd re-enable TM local snapshots unless your drive is just really FULL and won't function properly. Your real problem isn't Time Machine, from what you write, but rather your Time Capsule. I would get it checked out ASAP if you can't find the answers that you need from Pondoni.

Retina Display MacBook Pro eye problem and strain

Recently, I boought a retina display and have since been having noticeable eye problem.
(strain, fatigue, oversensativity to computer monitor/screen ligthing)
My question was, has anyone been experiencing the same.
I use my computer pretty much all day, since my work/studies are all based on it.
Still, after 2 weeks of using retina display macbook pro, I have rapidely seen my eyes
starting to hurt, being oversensitive to computer monitor (not that I can't use any, but am
very sensitive to any lighting and need particular moderation in usage)
Now true, there ARE many good habits I did not know of before,(see some examples below)
that I am trying to adopt but still (reducing only in part the problem), I must say I am rather worried,
since I have never had any similar problem in 5 yearsof using my previous 13", macbook, mid 2007.
Any commments, or suggestion (constructive of course) would be welcome.
(few examples of of good habits I have tried so far)
as regularly standing (/30 min),
look at something far away for 20 second (/20 min), blinking regularly, closing eyes for a moment,
adjusting lighting in work environnement, buying an antiglare film or device (nushield) , adjusting screen position,
not working to close to screen, using bigger fonts

an hour on my MBP by itself (someone else's office, a hotel room, an airplane, my lazy sofa) and my eyes lose the ability to focus --and I'm toast.
Ok, I'll explain why.
First off your iPad and iPhone screen is smaller, thus doesn't reflect as much as a larger display will.
Your other displays are in a static environment where you have reduced the glare or it's been reduced just by chance.
When you take the glossy screen laptop to another location without adequate environmental features to reduce glare imposed (no overhead lights, closed windows, low light etc.) on the screen, thus your getting eyestrain from the glare.
It's caused by the slightly out of focus reflections verses the screen image, your eyes are automatically refocusing between the two images.
Your solution in this matter is to apply a anti-glare film to the laptops glossy screen, unfortunately it's going to cost money and be replaced often as it gets dirty, dries out and peels at edges etc.
Ideally a anti-glare matte screen would be the choice in the first place. I use my Mac for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and don't have the eyestrain problem anymore.

Macbook Pro Harddrive Upgrade Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10TPVT

I recently purchased a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drive (WD10TPVT) in order to replace the 500GB hard drive in my Unibody Macbook Pro 15" running Mac OS X 10.6.4.
After swapping the hard drives I wanted to install Snow Leopard from the scratch on the empty hard drive. I partitioned the hard drive and started the install, but after about 30 min the computer seems to freeze. I tried several times, and each time the behavior is similar. After swapping the hard drives again (back to the old hard drive) I connected the WD10TPVT via an external USB enclosure, and now it works fine - over an extended period of time. So I'm fairly sure the drive itself is working properly.
I did some research, and it seems that people had similar issues with this drive (e.g. a thread in this forum titled "WD 1TB WD10TPVT in Late 2009 15" Unibody Macbook Pro - NEED HELP!" from April 15). It seems to me that this issue is old but still unresolved, and I wonder if there are any new developments concerning this problem. Is there a "generic" solution?
Another question: the WD10TPVT has 4 additional pins next to the ribbon cable connector. I didn't find any documentation on this, but I assume that these are jumper pins. I found some information that certain jumper configurations will/will not work in the Macbook Pro, but no details on this. What jumper settings do I need to get the WD10TPVT running in my Macbook Pro?

There are known issues with replacement HD's on 2009 MBP (and, posibly other models too).
According to Apple support, it is due to acceleration sensor, which in MBP requires HD to have custom firmware.
There was even a fix to solve this issue (which I cannot find now, and it actually didn't solve much).
So far, the best "fix" seems to be to install HD with Apple firmware (works 100%). There are reports that certain drives without acceleration sensor are working properly too, a bit expensive to try, though.
Still a mystery why Apple does not clearly warn about this issue.

After backing up the 2008 macbook pros harddrive the iphoto pictures are all gone!

A third party company made a backup of my 2008 Macbook pro by taKing the hard drive out of my 2008 macbook pro the videocard broke and i had nochange to do the backup by my own :( so i needed to go somewhere specialized and i paid 125$ for getting the conete harddrive backed up including all my photos music documents. After all the repairs from apples side were done i felt that the harddrive sounded kind of bad so i went back to the apple store and they told me they have to replace the hardrive and if i have an backup which i thought i had, so that was 2 days ago. As i got my macbook pro back from Apple i brought it to thd place who made my backup. All was saved on their extrernal hardrive but all my photos (iphoto) are gone :( they cannot find them anymore on the drive Nd they couldn't do anything for me :( now my macbook is fixed but all my memmories i kept as pictures are gone and i spent 125$ for a backing up my pictures and now they are all gone :( is there anybody out there who may can halp me tell me what to try ? Maybe my old harddrive where did apple sent it to? May i can get it back or could it be on the. Backup drive but under the library or iphoto folders are just some pictures :( like 500 . But there is one corrupt file which i also cannot open :(

1. Reinstalling iPhoto has no effect on your photos. The iPhoto application is totally seperate from your iPhoto library
2. Is you backed up correctly and restored correctly nothing would change
3. Given your report it is clear that you dopi somethinfpg incorrectly. However since you do not tell how you backed up or how you restored it is impossible to guess what you did wrong or if itpt is possible to fix
4. Exactly step by step howvdid you back up your iPhoto library and exactly how did you restore it?
5. Do you have a TimeMachine backup or clone of your iPhoto library from before you did this?
6. What version of iPhoto '11? There are many different versions

I have purchased CS3 and I have a G5 Tower and a MBP dual 2 core (bought it 2 months ago)
Let me tell you that I am very unpleased with CS3 on both machines.
On the G5 it is 10 times slower than CS1 for some reason it takes a lot of processing power and RAM wich the G5 does poorly.
On the MBP it processes fine but I only have 1 Gig of RAM and I feel that I don't have enough. Plus it doesn't help that a laptop HD is slower at opening files so it really makes it look like it runs slow...I should of bought the 24in imac instead due to the fact that it doesn't cost 900$ to buy a extra 2 Gigs of RAM
and the HD is faster

Macbook Pro Retina problem connecting to external monitor

Hello Community,
I've been experiencing a problem, I bought a 13' Macbook Pro Retina. Not quite a cheap machine.
But when I connect through HDMI to my HP 23xi , the screen gets blurry and cut. I tried messing with the configurations, but it simply won't get better.
I presume it's because it is retina, of course. But I bought this monitor, a quite nice monitor a month ago, and I do not want to sell it nor throw it away.
What should I do?

Macbook Pro Usb problems

I have a Macbook Pro, and I recently started having problems with the usb ports. I run some midi equipment off of them and I have a usb hub that I connect in as well. And recently the usb port closer to the lighting port wont connect with any mice and with any of my controllers. Both ports charge my ipod but I cant get any usb hubs to work in the top on (closer to the lighting port)
