MacBook Pro (Mid-2009) shuts down while running on battery

Hi,
Five months ago, my MacBook Pro 15'' (2.53Ghz) started showing me the message 'Service Battery'. I took it to an Apple Store and I was told that everything is still fine. Nevertheless, for the past 2 months my laptop shuts down while running on battery (with 20% and 40% levels of charge) periodically. This does not happen every time.
Does anyone know if AppleCare covers this failure?
Is there any other way to fix this?
Thank you,
George

Mine does the same thing.  May i suggest downloading istat pro to look at the health of your battery.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Also do you calibrate your battery?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
I had never done that but after 15 months and 450+ cycles I was experiencing the same problem.  I am a heavy user of my mbp 15"  (2.4Ghz).  After calibrating my health in istat which was going between 30-53 % Is holding steady around 65-mid 70% health wise.  I have also noticed that my battery icon has gone from service battery to replace now to holding at replace soon for the time being.
I am not sure how many cycles you can get out of one battery but as far as i know 700ish is good.  While i wish i was closer to an apple store (3ish hrs or more) i do hope i have helped you.

    For the past few days my Macbook Pro, the one I've had since the summer of 2009, has been shutting down at random times. Not only does it shut down without warning but it restarts my clock to March 24 2001, at 7:30pm every time. What the heck? Especially since this week is finals week, I have to trust my computer to hold out for four more days before it can stop working, but until then I just want to know what the problem could be.

  • Mac book pro mid 2009 shuts down after a few hour then will only boot after waiting and pressing power button numerous times. I am running mountain lion with most recent updates.

    Mac book pro mid 2009 shuts down after a few hour of use and then is very difficult to reboot. Sometimes I have to wait hours, sometimes I have to repeatedly press the power button and then it will slowly start a little longer each press untill it completely boots. It has done this three times know.  Each time I was watching a video.

    Try running the Apple Hardware Test - sounds as if you've hardware issues.

  • My battery lifetime at my MacBook Pro Mid 2009 is down after 1 hour!

    Mac Book Pro Mid 2009, running with Mountain Lion is down after 1 hour! I already replaced it with a new one, but same problem. There is also a warning to control the battery. SMC and PRAM reset done. Nothing helps. From time to time, the remaining time jumps from almost clear (20%) up tu 80%! And the process to calculate this time needs much time. Can anybody help me? Cheers

    I don't recommend you to restore a Time Machine backup because the same problem will appear if there's a software issue. First, install Mountain Lion without restoring the backup and check that the battery works correctly

  • MacBook pro (late 2008) shutting down even without the battery

    Hello
    I have a MacBook pro late 2008 model, recently it started to randomly shut down.
    I have tried the following
    - Reseting Pram
    - Reseting the SMC
    - Recalibrating the battery
    - New hard drive
    - Returned to original RAM (from 4 to 2Gb)
    - Removed the battery and run with the MagSafe only
    - Downloaded a fan control program to run it at max and verify if this was not a heating issue (although this also happens right after starting the laptop)
    Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm already loosing hope on my Mac :(
    Thanks for any help that you could provide

    Hi V,
    Even though the symptoms don't match up exactly, you may have the NVIDIA issue. First, go to System Profiler > Hardware > Graphics/Displays and see if you have the GeForce 8600M GT GPU. This is the GPU covered under the free repair program. While there, also look at PCIe Lane Width. If it says anything other than x16, the GPU has issues (but this is only one potential symptom). If you have the 8600 GPU, bring the MBP to an Apple Store or AASP for free testing. If Apple's free test confirms the issue, repair is free. Read all about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
    Also, whether you have the 8600 or not, you should run all the updates in Software Update.

  • Macbook pro 2.33ghz shuts down still after new battery.

    I recently got a new battery for my macbook pro because it was randomly shutting down when not connected to power. The Genius's said the problem was the battery separating from the aluminum or battery warping. Anyway, that didn't seem to fix the problem and I have since had problems with the computer shutting down without warning when not connected to power. So I took it back to the genius's who kept it for 24 hours to run some tests which turned out no useful info. The Genius then suggested a clean install of leopard to see if that would solve the issue. I have since done the clean install of Leopard and still have the shutting down issue. Any idea of what the problem could be? The genius did mention the logic board as one possibility. I think that is like $800-$900. Anyone have any less expensive ideas? I'm not sure it is worth replacing if the problem is the logic board and it costs that much...
    Oh yeah, one other symptom: my fans are constantly running at 6000rpm with one or no apps running. Even right now after a restart and just running safari they are running at 6000rpm.
    Thanks in advance. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

    You might want to run the Apple Hardware test--the fact that your fans are running all out may indicate that your thermal sensors aren't working or may be disconnected. So you might well get an SNS type error. Run the extended version. If you do get one or more error codes, that would be a more specific indication of what the problem is. It is way too easy to just blame the logic board--best to try some troubleshooting first.
    I'm wondering if a malfunction of the thermal sensors might make the Mac think it was too hot and might be shutting it down to prevent it from damaging itself? Maybe that's also why the fans are running so fast? It's just a theory, but the fix should be cheaper than a logic board. And the AHT should be able to find something like this.
    Good luck!

    Did you reset the SMC? Do this by removing the battery and all plugs connecting to your computer and holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2009 HDD to a Kingston SSD SATA drive - Problems

    Hi
    I own a MacBook Pro Mid 2009 and I'm running OSX Mavericks with Windows 8.1 Pro Bootcamp.  I wanted to upgrade to an SSD drive and after reading the great reviews on Amazon, I purchased a Kingston 240GB SSD 2.5" V300 SATA 3.
    Many of the buyers had installed the SSD drive on Macbook Pro, including "mid 2009' models without any real problems but I've just spent the best part of 3 hours trying to install the drive but so far, it has not worked and the problem seems to be that, although the Acronis True Image software that comes with the drive to 'clone' the source drive and install it onto the destination drive (new SSD drive), I get a message which states, "WARNING:  After migration, the O/S will not be able to boot from the destination disk in the BIOS - If you want to boot from the destination disk after migration, you need to enable UEFI booting in your system and then restart".
    During one of my first attempts to install the SSD drive, I removed the original HDD from the MBP and installed it in the supplied 2.5" caddy and and connected it to the MBP via the USB cable supplied then installed the new Kingston SSD SATA3 drive in the MBP, powered up and then rebooted.  The Acronis bootable software launched and after choosing 'clone disk', cose source and destination drives, I got a message saying:  "The selected disk will be migrated as is (disks layout will remain GPT)".  "After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from the destination disk in the BIOS".
    My system has the latest available Boot ROM Version (MBP.00AC.B03 and the SMC Version is 1.47f2 and as far as I am aware, Apple computers have no BIOS that you can access like on Windows computers and instead use EFI instead.
    Both drives had Extended Journaled GUID Partitions on them and what baffles me is that other buyers of these Kingston SSD SATA3 drives appear to have managed to install the SSD drive, but I've had to give up.
    I would really like to get the SSD drive working but so far I've failed.  Any advice would be appreciated and I'll try it out before reluctantly returning the drive for refund.

    Hi
    Thanks for your reply.
    Yes the Acronis software is Windows but I read through a lot of reviews on the Kingston SSD SATA 3 drives Amazon and from what I can gather, after removing the original drives and installing that in the 2.5" caddy and then installing the new SD drive in the Macbook, those buyers then used the software to boot from and clone the source drive to the new drive.
    I'm not sure if I mentioned it in my first post, but I did use the Disk Utility in Mac OSX and erased, formatted and partitioned the drive and then pushed CMD + R at start up but I was not able to install a copy of the OS because the drive was not recognised.
    I think I also used the disk utility in Windows and then tried again in OSX but no luck.  I'm no expert but as stated above, the issue seems to be that the SSD drive is not booable in the BIOS (or Mac equivalent).
    The SSD drive is SATA 3 and I'm sure that the SATA ports are SATA 1 on my MBP and maybe that the problem Perhaps someone can confirm this.

    Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
    The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
    The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
    For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

    I updated to OS X Mavericks and now trying to run Logic Pro X on a MacBook Pro mid-2009, using an M-Audio Axiom 49 and an M-Audio Fast Track Pro... Logic keeps telling me that Mac OS X MIDI Services are not available... How do I solve this problem?

    I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
    My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
    I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???
