Macbook Pro random shut down whilst using battery

My Macbook Pro randomly shuts down whilst using battery power even though their is plenty of charge in the battery.
Any ideas??

does it do it when plugged in?
Also it sounds that there's a power failure and causing it to shutdown, I would get it serviced asap, the battery connector might be faulty.

  • Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro, random shut-downs running Mavericks,

Since the last two Mavericks OS updates, beginning April 21st, I am experiencing random shut-downs on a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro, any suggestions? I've seen posts regarding the known logic board issue, I had no problem before the last two OS updates. Seems to be related to sleep/wake. Running 10.9.2

Hi Andy, would you take more look at this log. . . random shut down happened again, look at 11:54 am and before, I re-booted at 12:02. Had suspected my external monitor at the office, laptop does not do this at home, ran for three straight days, no issues. No monitor connected today as a test. Plugged in at the office for just over three hours and bam. could be the battery thing, will try AHT or Apple Diagnostics, could it be a Time Machine related issue? Thanks in advance.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Shuts down...SMC Reset only temporarily

I have a somewhat concerning problem with my 2011 Macbook Pro (15").
It started two nights ago, didn't happen yesterday, and happened again today.  It has also fried two iPhone chargers.  Here's the story:
On Sunday night, my Macbook randomly shut down.  Wouldn't restart, nor would it even charge (the LED on the charger didn't even come on).  So after trying everything I could (namely, PRAM, SMC, etc.), I finally took the bottom of the computer off, unplugged the battery internally, did a hard reset of the SMC, and everything was back up and running.  That night, I got a strange error when I plugged my iPhone in to charge:  USB is using too much power and has been disabled, or something along those lines.  Weird--but my computer didn't shut down again, so I shrugged it off.
Fast forward to tonight--all worked fine until I plugged a NEW iphone charger into the computer.  This same cord worked fine this afternoon, but I got the "USB drawing too much power" message and then nothing.  The computer shut off, had to unscrew the bottom and do another hard reset, and here I am.
I've tried to figure out just what might have caused this.  I did buy a charger from my university's bookstore that I do not think was Apple branded.  Is it possible that it somehow fried my battery? Or do I have a bigger issue - motherboard, RAM, etc.? The computer (when I get it to finally power back up) works fine and no files have been lost, so I don't think it's harddrive related.
If anyone can shed some light on this problem, please let me know.  I've searched for a long time to find a problem similar to mine and haven't found any answers other than the generic "Reset SMC," or "Reset PRAM."  I know how to and have done both of these things.  Do I need a new battery? I ordered a charger directly from Apple and have only used it since the first shut down.

There's only a limited amount of things you can do on a laptop repair-wise: tiny and tightly packed components are a far cry from yesteryear's huge boxes with individual removables.
Is the USB error coming in regardless of which USB slot you use? Have you reproduced this error with other USB devices that draw a charging current or significant power?
If the problem is indeed that USB is drawing too much power, it could be a short in the USB circuitry, or it could be a short with your phone. Try charging someone else's iPhone. The concept with current is that it's "pushed by voltage" and "drawn by a resistance in a closed circuit." If the voltage is too high, or if the resistance is too low (short circuit), then you will end up where you're at.
Also, it could be helpful to review your system log. In spotlight, write "terminal" then type in the shell prompt (without the quotes) "cp /var/log/system.log ~" this will put a file on your desktop that you can open with a text viewer, search for the word "USB" towards the end of the file, and see what you can make of it. Post anything here that seems suspicious. Warning: it'll be cryptic and hard to read!
    So,
    - Try different USB slots on your computer
    - Try different USB power-drawing devices
    - Try different iPhones or iPods
    - Review the system log and post any suspicious lines

  • Why is my macbook pro randomly shutting down and restarting?

My macbook pro is randomly shutting down and restarting. It started a couple days ago and seems to happen completely randomly. I did a extended hardware test and no problems were found. I reset the SMC and that didn’t work. Battery is charged and I don’t think its overheating. Im using Mavericks 10.9.1. Someone please help because I can’t even use my mac for anything lately and its really annoying.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Shuts Down and Restarts

    Hi There,
This issue appears to have occured for other people in different forms but there does not appear to have been a conclusive answer to the problem, so here's hoping someone here might be able to provide some further insight into the issue, and with some luck, a solution.
I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.2 (plugged-in to power) that has started to randomly shut down and then restart itself (goes through all the start up screens; Apple logo etc.). It doesn't appear to be just a straight restart of the machine, but it shuts down, and then a couple of seconds later, reboots, as though it is two different actions...
The computer does this pretty randomly, and now quite often. It happens when applications are running, Safari for example, and when nothing is running and i just go to open Finder or use Spotlight.
I haven't had this issue in the past (some 3+ years of full time use now) and as far as i'm aware, nothing changed on the computer immediately prior to the issue occuring (no updates, installs etc.).
I've checked the systen log which, each time the issue occurs, returns the message 'Previous Shutdown Cause: -128'. I've sought reference as to what this refers to, but it would appear to be a mystery to the WWW.
I have tried the following solutions with no success:
    - Proper restart and reboot of system;
    - Repair permissions;
    - Reset SMC;
    - Reinstall OS X.
Any thoughts on what the problem is, what the '-128' refers to, or what more i can try to solve the issue?
Your help is much appreciated! Thanks.

I know this is a really old thread, and everyone's probably already bought new computers now. However, I'm still using my 2010 MacBook Pro and have been experiencing this very frustrating issue. However, I think I just found a way to open a finder window that prevents the shut down. In Finder>Preferences>General, under "New Finder windows show", I had "All my files" selected (BAD?), which probably was the cause, because setting that to "Desktop" instead has prevented shut downs, for now. Just thought I should share this tip, in case anyone else suffers from this annoying issue.  If anyone has a better tip or a real fix, please post a reply! There are still people, like myself, working on these older machines who would appreciate the info. THANKS!

  • Late 2007 MacBook Pro Randomly Shuts Down

I have a late 2007 15-inch MacBook Pro (A1226). It has a 2.20 GHz Core 2 Duo, 5 GB of memory (a stock 1 GB stick and a 3rd party 4 GB stick), and a stock 200 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi hard drive. I have had issues with it shutting down in certain situations.
    (1) The laptop shuts down abruptly whenever I pick it up and walk around with it. This consistently happens within 5 seconds of picking it up. I know for a fact that this never used to be problem. I only started noticing this happening about 5 months ago.
    (2) The laptop randomly shuts down abruptly when I'm using it on a hard stable surface that does not block any vents. This does not necessarily happen when it is under a heavy load. When it happens, the laptop suddenly shuts down and the screen suddenly goes black. I have to wait about 5 to 10 minutes for it to be willing to turn back on again. This happens one to three times a day, and it is completely unpredictable. Below is a graph of various temperatures up until the point when it shuts down. None of these temperatures are high enough for me to suspect that this issue is caused by overheating.
I would really appreciate it if anyone had any insight into why these random shutdowns are happening. Thanks!

I suggest an Apple Hardware Test and see if that picks up any issues:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
An appointment at an Apple genius bar seems like a good idea.  Since you say that the problem occurs when you pick up the MBP, you should be able to recreate it for the technicians.
Though I do not believe that it is connected with yo ur problem, I would suggest replacing the 1 GB RAM chip with a 2 GB RAM chip.  That is the best RAM combination for your MBP.
    Ciao.

  • My 2008 15in macbook pro randomly shuts down while in sleep mode. What can I do?

I have a 2008 15in macbook pro that when it goes to sleep it will randomly shut down. Most times when I try to wake it up from sleep it will just shut itself down as well as when I close and reopen the computer it will just shut down. When I try to turn it back on it generally takes 2 to 3 tries to get it to finally come back on. What should I do? I think it might be a Hard Drive problem. Anything helps!

Hello californiabears and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
    Try resetting SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
If you think you have a HD problem look at the HD in System reports:
Apple menu - About this Mac - More Info - System Report - SATA
Under SMART status does say "verified"?
    Otherwise:
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support
Is that the original disk from 2008? If so it's due.

  • MacBook Pro randomly shutting down, while plugged in

My MacBook Pro has been randomly shutting down, while its plugged in and with full battery... I just replaced my battery a couple months ago so it isnt, or shouldnt be, a battery problem... anyone know whats going on?

Same is happening to me. It's only doing it since updating to Leopard.

  • MacBook Pro Randomly Shut Down

So yesterday I was on my MacBook Pro (2009) & it randomly shut down and I didn't think anything of it until about 20 minutes later. I know it isn't a battery issue because my battery still has charge. Any help?

    This was a charger problem.

  • Why does my macbook pro randomly shut down?

Currently I'm running a MacBook Pro from 2008 I believe.  It has a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM.  Lately it has developed a habit of shutting down at random times, usually while I'm in the middle of doing something.  I've had it shut down white typing documents in Word, working on spreadsheets in Excel, using Google Chrome, and playing various games.  After it shuts down it always boots right back into the program it was running at the time it decided to shut down.  I've also noticed that the fans seem to run almost all the time, and even though I recently replaced the battery it seems to drain in about 30 minutes.  The Apple Hardware test software that came with the machine returns no errors, Disk utility says my hard drive is fine, and no programs seem to be taking up the majority of the processing time.  Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions for fixing the shutdown issue?

The third-party system modification "ScreenFlow" may be contributing to your problem. I suggest you back up all data, then uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. Reboot and see whether there's any improvement.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Shutting Down OFTEN

So within the last month my Macbook Pro has been randomly shutting off. It was very minor at first but now I can rarely get my Macbook to run more than 10-15 minutes without it just shutting off. My thing is I'm not sure if it's the power cord or something internally. I don't have a battery because it did the whole overheating expanding thing so I can't really test it with that.
I do notice though when it shut downs i'll unplug the cord and plug it back in and the little light on the cord won't light up for a few seconds or i'll plug it in, hit the power button on the Macbook and the light will actually flash off as i'm hitting it and not power up.
Let me also say that I got this Macbook Pro in like 2006 so I don't know if it's just like getting to the end of its life or what. Anybody have this issue or know what I can do to maybe determine the problem. I am a ways away from an Apple store and I know it is no longer under warranty. I could just be totally out of luck but I thought you guys may be able to help. Thank you!
    Chris

Here's a place to get started:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1365
There are a number of links for resets and troubleshooting. Try these, and see if anything works.
    Good luck!

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

  • MacBook Pro randomly shutting down, but not allowed to update

Hello, I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch and it just recently has started shutting down at very random times. I saw another discussion about downloading an update to fix it, but when I went to download the update it said that my computer did not need the update. Any suggestions/help???

“If your MacBook is shutting down intermittently, please contact AppleCare for service.”
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Since upgrading to Maverick my macbook pro randomly shuts down all the time, no idea why...

Since I upgraded to Maverick, my Macbook Pro shuts down quite often without warning. No idea why.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
