Macbook Pro Retina: can anyone help me with running 2 extended desktop DVIs?

I know I need 2 thunderbolt to DVI adapters for this. In the UK these are £25 each, but the MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapters which look the same are very much cheaper .....
http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Female-Adapter-Macbook-Laptop/dp/B003BHHIA4/re f=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1359830910&sr=1-1&keywords=minidisplayport+to +DVI
They look the same as thunderbolt to DVIs but is there a difference? Anybody know if the thunderbolt to DVI is an ACTIVE adapter, which means the cheaper versions won't work?
Secondly, I've read scary stuff here from people who think their thunderbolt to DVI fried their monitors. Is there any evidence which supports this?
Does anyone out there use two extended desktop DVIs on a daily basis with a Pro Retina? Any tips or things I should know?

I suggest you buy the Apple TB/MDP to DVI adapters as I have tried another brand and it dod not work. That was on a late 15" 2011 model, YMMV.
Second I have never heard of a Apple TB/MDP to DVI adapter ever frying a monitor of any make or model.
Please post references to this claim.
May be possible with a poorly desinged adapter with some of the TB power output being cross linked to one of the DVI pins/connectors. But still doubtful.

  • Just Got a MacBook Pro. Can Anyone Help?

    Hi;
I was recently bequeathed a 15-inch MacBook Pro from my dad, which I believe was originally purchased sometime in 2006 (it's a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB RAM). I've got a few questions about how to get the Mac up to speed:
1 - I'm currently running Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.8. Which OS can I upgrade to and what's the best way to do it? I just downloaded the OS 10.6.8 combo update and am ready to take the next step.
2 - The battery is dead. In  researching the problem I discovered that this was a known issue with Apple. What can be done about getting a replacement battery?
3 - I would like to transfer my iTunes library from the PC, where it currently resides, to this MacBook. However my dad already has his own iTunes library on it. What would be the best way to deal with bringing my library onto this MacBook?
    Thank you all, as always.

Stay there on 10.6.8, your machine is too dated for the newer OS X versions and will only slow it down and you'll have to dump all the free PPC software currently installed and the Intel ones will require a paid upgrade to work with 10.7+.
It's a 2006 machine, it's 2013 now, that means it's a whopping 7 years old and about to die at any time (they don't last forever and 7 years is GREAT for a laptop) so it makes absolutely no sense to spend any more money on it, just run 10.6.8 until the wheels fall off.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
2 - The battery is dead. In  researching the problem I discovered that this was a known issue with Apple. What can be done about getting a replacement battery?
Plug it into a strong power source and do a #1 SMC Reset, see after a couple of days if it will hold a charge, if not contact Apple and see if you can get a replacement battery. Else look at Other World Computing or MacMall.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If you take the Mac in for a battery, also take the charger as it might be the problem and they like to have it all there to eval.
3 - I would like to transfer my iTunes library from the PC, where it currently resides, to this MacBook. However my dad already has his own iTunes library on it. What would be the best way to deal with bringing my library onto this MacBook?
Make sure to have your music backed up on a external drive, then you can simply transfer it to the new Mac.
If you want to use the drive back and forth between the PC, then right click and format it (no data you want to keep) exFAT (not NTFS). Format exFAT on the PC (Windows XP can install it free from Microsoft) this way the drive can be read/write by either Mac or Windows. DO not format exFAT on the Mac, it messes it up.
Under Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts you can create a new account for yourself, leave your Dad's alone (so you can update the software etc) and just use your account and put your music there for setting it up how you like. If you need more drive space, move (copy, then delete the originals) of your Dads data to the external drive and reboot.
Use the Apple menu to log in/out and switch user accounts.
Replace the new blank iTunes Library with the one from the PC into the Music folder and iTunes will take care of the rest.
I know your excited to have a Mac, but quite frankly that's a really old box, and Apple upgrades their OS X versions annually now and kind of forces a faster hardware turnover rate than Windows with it's 10 years of support per OS version, so it's not important to always think you need to stay with the latest OS X version, because sometimes Apple won't allow newer ones to install on some older Macs, despite them still working fine. (like the machines that can't upgrade to 10.8, despite being able to run 10.7)
Some older Mac's Apple allows newer OS X versions to be installed, but it causes some much hardship, slowdowns and shaky behavior that it's best for the computer to be on a earlier OS X version, that's your case with those older processors and graphics.
If you really get hooked on a Mac, then save for a new machine that you can upgrade the OS X version a few times, then stop and just be happy there. Because each time a upgrade occurs, it's a major shock and problems galore, plus having to pay to upgrade all new versions of software.
It's anything but peace and stability on Mac's, unless you tread carefully and slowly.

  • Just the other day I try to put an event into icalendar but it won't appear on screen.  When I go to my iPad and iPhone the "New Event" appears on these but I can't see where to add info on my MacBook Pro.  Can anyone help?

Just this week I am unable to see info I am trying to add to my iCalendar.  But when I look at my iPad and iPhone the "New Evnt" appears.  Because it doesn't look like there is anything on my MacBook Pro can't enter appointments.  Any help is appreciated.

This can be caused by a number of issues.
Was everything working and then suddenly stopped??
Or is this a new clean setup and has never worked.
Do you have a cable modem which is not a router and the TC setup in bridge? That will cause it. The TC must be in router mode, ie dhcp and nat.
Check the IP the MBP gets including dns and gateway..
Then check the ipad/iphone.. post what IP dns and gateway (router in applespeak) they get.

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Kernel Panics for 2010 MacBook Pro 15" can anyone help?

This has been going on for a while now after the hard drive was originally replaced back in the summer.  Tried fixing it myself, however no luck and it keeps coming back.  Anyone have any other ideas?
    Thanks

You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and your log is showing that the NVIDIA GPU is damaged.
Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro have got a damaged NVIDIA GPU that may cause unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Apple is repairing all of these MacBooks Pro for free if they were purchased less than 3 years ago, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. Also, print the log and take it with you

  • Can anyone help me with Bakcing up my MacBook Pro???

Can anyone help me with Bakcing up my MacBook Pro???

Assuming you're looking for recommendations rather than experiencing specific problems, I would advise the following:
Buy 2 external hard disks. You don't say what model of MBP you have, but I would suggest buying the fastest type of drive your MBP supports. So, instead of going for a cheap USB2 drive, I would consider FW800 or Thunderbolt if your MBP supports it. It might cost more but will be faster.
One of the drives needs to be only as big as your internal HD. (Technically, it only needs to be as big as the amount of data you want to back up but to be safe, get one that matches your HD size). This HD can be used for a Bootable Clone. I use SuperDuper from Shirt Pocket, and a Freecom 1GB FireWire 800 drive. You can try it out for free, but it's worth buying a licence because once it's licenced you can do 'smart backups' where it only needs to copy files that have changed. The free version will have to do an entire clone each time which takes longer.
The second drive you should use as a Time Machine backup. The bigger this is, the more backups you can keep, so the further back in time you can go.
The reason to have both is that they both do different things.
SuperDuper is great for doing a complete 'emergency' backup every so often (i.e. before you go away, or at the end of each week, whatever). This disk means that if your MBP is lost, stolen or the HD goes pop, you can recover pretty much the whole system immediately, because you can boot from that drive on any Intel Mac that supports your bus type and OS version. I do an SD clone every so often and keep it hidden, in case anything happens to my MBP.
Time Machine backups are NOT bootable. However, in an emergency you can do a clean install of your OS and then get everything back by migrating from your last TM backup. But the best and most common use of TM backups is simply 'turning back the clock', i.e. you deleted something you wished you hadn't, or even saved over a piece of work you didn't mean to, or installed some software that has caused problems. As long as there was a recent TM backup, you can just get the older version of that file, or revert your whole system. I carry my TM drive around with me in my laptop bag and have it sat there attached and backing up the whole time I'm working.
Well worth having both strategies in place.
As an aside, if you keep confidential files (client or personal) on your MBP and carry it around somewhere like London as I do, it's also worth considering using FileVault so if your lappy gets nicked you don't have to worry about them getting at all your info. And if you have a clone at home, in the worst instance, all you really have to worry about is just buying a new laptop and restoring it. Expensive, sure, but at least your data is safe.

How exactly did you shut down your laptop? Not a hard restart (holding down the power button), I hope... if that's the case, then it is extremely unlikely the file is still intact on your computer. If it is, it would be an image on your RAM, and it is time-and-resource-intensive to recover it if it is even there. RAM memory is disposable and always being written over. Sorry dude...
If it wasn't a hard restart, Keynote should have made a backup, unless you 'Force Close'd it.
It really all depends on how your mac was shut down.

  • Can anyone help me with advice for a replacement hard drive

    Hi there,
Can anyone help me with advice for a replacement hard drive and RAM upgrade for my Mac Book Pro 5,3
Its 3 years old & running Snow Leopard 10.6.8
I do a lot of audio & movie work so performance is important.
The logic board was replaced last summer & I was advised to replace the hard drive then...oops
Anyway it has limped on until now but is giving me cause for concern...
I have found a couple of possibilities below...so if anyone does have a moment to take a look & help me out I would be most grateful

Thanks guys that is so helpful :-)
I will follow your advice Ogelthorpe & see how I get on with the job!!! Virgin territory for me so I may well shout for help once my MBP is in bits!! Is there a guide for duffers for this job anywhere??
& yes in an ideal world I would be replacing my old MBP but I'm just not in a position to do that at the moment....let's hope things pick up in 2013
    All the very best

  • Can anyone help me with obtaining a product key for windows 8???? uummmmmm...I lost mine or something,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

downloaded windows 8 pro pack ISO supposedly with working product key .....surprisingly it doesn't work... can anyone help me with related issues or advice????

    Cool Guy Chris,
    According to the
Windows 8.1 Activation Errors webpage, if your current activation key doesn’t work, you’ll need to purchase a new one.
In order to get a new activation key, you’ll need to contact a
    Microsoft Customer Support Representative.
    I hope this helps!

  • I own a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) with a 500 GB Apple SSD SM0512F (Revision UXM2JA1Q).

I own a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) with a 500 GB Apple SSD SM0512F (Revision UXM2JA1Q). I’d like to replace this original SSD with a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB. Am I going to encounter problems in trying to remove & replace the SSDs? That is, are they the same type of SSD, with same connection?
I plan to have a "tech" do the actual work inside the MacBook Pro, but I'd like to know if the current SSD can be easily replaced with the Samsung SSD 840 EVO?
Please note that I am so "green" that I'm not even sure if this provides adequate information to answer my question!

it's not possible to replace your SSD with 840 EVO.
Samsung 840 EVO is a standard 2.5" drive with SATA connector, while Retina MacBooks use proprietary "stick" form-factor with PCI Express interface.
AFAIK, there are no compatible PCIe SSDs on the market, the only upgrades you'll find are for earlier (2012) Retina MacBook Pros which use SATA.
If you're looking for extra capacity, external USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt HDD/SSD is the best option.

I am having trouble creating a timeline in a trial verson of Premiere Pro. Can anyone help?

Quickest way is to drag a clip into the New Item icon (left bottom corner Project window)
You can also right click on the clip in the Project window and create sequence from clip (or something in that order, not at my editing machine right now).

New to Premiere Pro? Get started with your first project — editing a video. In less than an hour, you'll learn to edit together different types of media to tell a video story.

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.
