Macbook Pro running Mavericks. Multiple display issue

I didn't have this problem running OS X Mountain Lion but now that I have upgraded to Mavericks the display on my second monitor (an HD TV) is too large for the screen and no resolution changes from the display menu have any effect
To be clear, the issue seems to be that the detected screen is larger than the actual monitor causing the edges of the display to be cut off. This is most evident in full screen mode as it cuts off things such as video action bars from view and the tabs from the top of browser search windows (especially annoying with browser windows as it also hides from view the minimize button).
Is there any way to adjust the screen size in OS X Mavericks as changing the resolution does nothing. Any help much appreciated.

I should also add that it has the problem where when it goes to sleep it's 50/50 as to whether it will wake up or not. If I click 'put hard disks to sleep when possible', it wakes up fine, but I don't like doing this.

Hi,  From about this Mac, my only HDD is full. When I have clicked and opened Storage screen when I've saw that there are 144 GB on Backups. I don't know which backup is it. and I really need help to find and delete it. I have Macbook pro running Maverick OS X.
I have a external HDD for time machine, but this backup I didn't know yet.
Please pleople... someone could help me?  I'm in troubles.

Linc Davis,  According below:  could I delete those snapshots from MobileBackups folder?   would it solve my problem? ( if I want not my HDD 80% full)     - Thank you a lot in advance.
Ordinarily, the best way to view your Local snapshots is via the normal Time Machine display, perquestion #15.  If for some reason that's not working, you can see them via the Finder.
From a Finder menubar, select Go > Go to Folder and type /Volumes in the prompt, and select theMobileBackups folder.   You'll see the same structure as for Time Machine backups on a separate volume:  a Backups.backupdb folder containing a folder for your Mac, which contains a time-stamped folder for each snapshot.  Inside each of those is a folder for each disk/partition that was backed-up, containing the same folder structure as on the original, with the contents as of the time of the backup.
Note that nothing in the size column is meaningful (if you Get Info on the MobileBackups folder, for example, it will show the total amount of space on the drive it's on!   It will show dashes for the Backups.backupdb folder, or any of the dated snapshot folders).

Just brought home newly purchased MacBook Pro 15"/Maverick/Retinal Display. To my astonishment, there is NO DVD slot! No one in the store told me about this missing feature. Intolerable, How does one install software? Insert CDs to copy for iTunes?Do I have to purchase an external DVD drive? Is one even available? What a crock!

I’ve owned Macs since 1990 (IICX my first), mostly desktops. Having had DVD/CD drives in all my previous laptop Macs since 2001 -  (2) G4 Powerbooks,  A 17” Mac Book Pro - and also inspecting a friend’s year-old Mac Book Pro which had the DVD slot - unless someone told me at purchase, I had no reason to know that the Retina display version of the 15” had NO DVD drive. ANYHOW, I fully intended to buy the non-Retina display version, because it was cheaper. Unfortunately by the time I got to the Apple store they were no longer selling the non-Retina display version; all versions were ONLY with the Retina display. And the fine distinction of a DVD vs. a non-DVD drive was not pointed out. So now I have to shell out an additional $80 bucks for an external SuperDrive.

  • I have a new Macbook Pro running Mavericks and safari consistently freezes. It takes several 'return/enter' presses to get to the page I requested. I have seen other comments and replies on how to fix (clear cache, clear extensions/plug-ins), to no avail.

I have a new macbook pro running mavericks and only using Safari as my browser.  75% of my url requests are 'hung up' and freeze.  I have seen other posts and have tried to clear cache, reset safari, remove extensions, but to no avail.
    Any recommendations?

If it works in a new user account, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Question: How do I sync contacts from my iPad to my MacBook Pro running Mavericks?

How do I sync contacts from my iPad to my MacBook Pro running Mavericks?
    rbarge

    Contacts sync via iCloud.
Set up iCloud on your iPad and your MBP, with the same iCloud account on both, with the same Apple ID.
On the Mac you set this up with System Preferences > iCloud, and have Contacts checked in the box on the right.
It looks very much the same on the iPad, Settings > iCloud.
If you have set this up and it's still not working, then sign out of and then back into your iCloud accounts.

  • MacBook Pro Retina with Thunderbolt Display Issues

I have issues when connecting my MacBook Pro to the Thunderbolt Display when I don't do a fresh boot of the MacBook Pro.  It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, the Thunderbolt Display usually turns on succesfully, but none of my USB devices (mouse, keyboard) respond and when I try to disconnect the Thunderbolt, the MacBook doesn't realize it's been disconnected and thus I'm just left with the background screen and have to shut it down by holding the power button for a few seconds.
With a fresh boot, everything works fine.  Are you supposed to have to shut down and restart everytime you hook up this monitor?  Has anyone had these issues?

I have the exact same issue. I hauled the TB Display into the Apple Store 3 times and finally they replaced it. Come to find out this new one has the same issue still. So It has to be rMBP related at this point. Unfortunately I don't think I have it under warranty still and the issue is hard to demonstrate. I recorded videos of it but every time I go into the store and plug it is the same as switching the speakers from internal to external and it takes 30-60 mins before it degrates to scratching sounds.
Please let me know if you ever foudn a solution. Im going to try to keep taking it in until I can get this resolved.

  • CS5 Photoshop/Bridge/Suite not working on new Retina Macbook Pro, running Mavericks 10.9.2

I recently purchased a new Retina MacBook Pro laptop running Mavericks OS X 10.9.2. I had Apple perform a data migration of all my apps and files from my older laptop onto the new one. Now when I go to open Photoshop CS5 I receive the following error message, "Could not synchronize the color settings because of a program error." Photoshop will then open but I can't do anything in the app. When I go to quit Photoshop I get this error message: "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the 'Get Info' command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders."
I am able to open Bridge, however the app in entiretly is noticeably lo-res and pixelated looking, so clearly something is not up to speed there either.
InDesign and Illustrator are also having issues.
I have run the System Update and it does not show anything in the CS5 Suite needing to be updated.
    Please advise! Thank you.

I do not get the Airplay icon on my Macbook's menu bar. I have checked the box in the Display settings to show mirroring options but still no icon. Airplay Display shows 'No device Detected'. Both AppleTV and MacBook Pro are on the same physical Network (192.168.1.0/24) and connected directly to my home ethernet switch (not wirelessly). I also made sure MacBook's Firewall is disable. Airplay feature use to work before upgrade to 10.9.2. As far as Home sharing from my AppleTV has a similar issue; it just does not find my MacBook after a while of loading and searching my music library. I am logged in to icloud on both devices (appletv and macbook). Also use to work before upgrade. Any ideas or recommendations. Thanks.

  • MacBook Pro Freezing with Multiple Displays

    Hi guys,
I've been having a bit of an issue with my MacBook Pro and its handling of multiple displays. I recently bought a third-party adapter off Amazon (that was highly rated and Prime eligible, so it wasn't some completely unknown, 1 dollar adapter). I'm driving two displays: a 1600x900 display over HDMI, and a 1920x1080 display over DVI via the aforementioned adapter.
Whenever I use the adapter with any of these displays, I get intermittent freezes. The computer will freeze for about 10 seconds every so often, and everything besides audio will halt. Audio continues to play back just fine, just any animations/video will freeze. If I have the iTunes visualizer up, it'll freeze. If I have a video up, same thing.
I initially thought it was the adapter, but upon taking it to another retina MacBook Pro (15"), it works just fine, no freezes. Furthermore, if I do something as nuts as taking said adapter, and throwing an HDMI-to-DVI adapter onto the Thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter, the freezes magically go away. Not sure what's making that work, but its impractical since I already have an HDMI port on my MBP.
Here's a list of what I've tried to suss out the problem:
    1. Reset SMC. No dice.
    2. Zapped PRAM. No dice.
    3. Watched Activity Monitor and Console when freeze occurs. Nothing out of the ordinary appears.
    4. Swapped display configurations around. Not much changed.
    5. Tried seeing if the freezes persist in safe boot: Yes, they do.
    6. Tried seeing if the freezes persist in recovery: Yes, they do.
    7. Tried combining the two adapter I have on hand (DVI-HDMI and TB-DVI) and running one display over HDMI from the combined adapter: Freezes have gone away for whatever reason.
Anyone have any idea what might be going on? If there's any conclusion I can draw from this, it's that either pure DVI output is broken on my machine, or somehow it's still the adapter I bought causing the freezes. I'm not sure what to do, and while I want to take this machine into the Genius Bar and let them poke at it, trying to reproduce this problem might be really hard in that environment. :/

Hello, exactly the same as mine (MBP early '08) now after nearly 3 year, confronted with the same.
Unfortunately, my first MBP late '07 went through the same problem (no flickering the screen just freeze out of nothing, and 2 logic board, memory replacment didn't help, maybe even 3 logic boards - it's a while ;)) Anyway I got this as replacement. And it just worked fine until yesterday.
Bad now, my AppleCare startet with the first MBP and so its not longer valid. Have my Genius appointment on Saturday and hope it will not be to frustrating.
As 3 years ago I have been reading through the forums and later followd partly these Nvidia discussion, seems to me there is more behind and the root cause never was found. And since Apple has changed the model entirely, I guess rc will never be found.
I will let you know the outcome of the talk on Saturday.

  • 17" MacBook Pro to 30" HD Display issue using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor.

Just replaced the Western Digital hard drive on my MacBook Pro with a SSD now running Lion 10.8.2, (updating from Snow Leopard latest version).
I have a 30" HD Apple display monitor and very much love using it.
    The issue.
The MacBook Pro will only allow the 30" Monitor to display its top resolution when the unit is closed, when it is open it shows either 2 screens or mirrored screens depending upon the settings, but not at the top resolution capable by the monitor.
Now, when I was using Snow Leopard on the previos hard drive, I could close the MacBook Pro and put the computer to sleep also putting the 30" Monitor to sleep, I could then wake the computer while it was closed with my external keyboard and the screen would wake showing the FULL resolution possible on the 30" Monitor.
Then I could open the lid of the MacBook Pro and the screen would stay black allowing ONLY the 30" HD Monitor to be used effectively as a desktop computer, without the complication or need to display 2 screens or mirrored screens but most importantly the fans wouldn't need to work overtime due to the MacBook Pro being closed cutting off vital ventilation through the 2 air ducts to the left and right of the keyboard.
For some reason I cannot do this with Mountain Lion, the compluter needs to be closed in order for the 30" Monitor to display top resolution, and the fans are working overtime and the unit is getting really hot.
My concern is that the MacBook Pro will overheat, the screen will be damaged as the MacBook does get exceptionally hot when running design and audio packages, even Adobe Flash sets the fans off, and lastly the computers speakers are muffled which is more of a moo point.
If anyone could shed some light or offer a solution I would be most appreciative.
    My specs:
MacBook Pro 17" Mid 2009 3.06 Intel Core Duo, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB, OS X 10.8.2 - connecting to an Apple 30" HD monitor with a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor.
    Thanks
    Christian Zav

Thanks for your quick reply! I want to think I'm not technically challenged, but... are you saying to go from minidisplay on macbook directly to the firewire in the back of the monitor? Or should I try to attach it to that ugly bunch of cables at the end of the monitor cable (dvi, usb, firewire and the power adapter thingy)? Either way, it seems like I might need yet another cable? Like Mini-display to... ?
I feel like my mother asking these questions... At any rate, when I called the guy at apple support last time he acted like it was a Miracle that I had anything on my cinema display at all if I had a minidisplay cable plugged into the thunderbolt port. He said that didn't work (but obviously it did, at least a little) I DID get a picture, it just wouldn't display at the 2560x1600 resolution. More like 1680xsomething. fuzzy and big. I want my pretty picture back.
Thanks so much for your help.

  • How do I install Lion on a partition on a 2012 Macbook pro running Mavericks?

I need to run software for which the latest OS that it is compatible with is OSX 10.7. How can I install 10.7 on a partition in my Mavericks Macbook pro?

Another way to find out is to call Apple (or stop at the nearest Genius Bar) and give them your serial number - they will be able to tell you with that.
FWIW, if you bought it used and it had Mavericks on it but the original OS was anything earlier than that, the seller didn't do you any favors as any OS (or app) purchased/downloaded from the app store is tied to the Apple ID used to obtain it forever - and it is not transferable. What that means is that unless he did a complete erase and reinstall the original OS (as required by the licensing agreement), you won't be able to update any apps and/or won't be able to reinstall as you'll be prompted for the seller's Apple ID/password.
So, let's figure out what it came with first; then you can try internet recovery (press Command + Option + R keys during boot up until you see it is connected to Apple's servers); in the Utilities screen, choose Disk Utility and erase your drive. When finished, back to the Utilities screen, choose reinstall OS X. While in Disk Utility, you should be able to re-partition - although I can't guarantee that'll work at that point because I've never tried it, but I don't see why it shouldn't. After you have it installed on one partition, install it again on the other partition. Once that's done, you can download/install Yosemite (or whatever) on one of the partitions using your own Apple ID.
Note: you must erase your entire drive in order to do any of the above.

  • MacBook Pro w/ Retina External Display Issues

Has anyone else noticed with the MacBook Pro w/ Retina, that it does not wake external monitors connected to through a dvi adapter?

Yes, I'm experiencing this issue as well.  Using a mini displayport to DVI cable.  My monitor will eventually return to life, but usually takes like 5-10 minutes.  Disconnecting and reconnecting the cable doesn't do anything for me.  I tried 2 different monitors, both had the same problem (both were Dell 24" monitors, but different model numbers.)  It doesn't do this all the time, but I did notice that it seems to be exacerbated by having something running full screen on the external monitor when it goes to sleep (diablo 3, which was originally what I thought was causing the problem, but youtube videos apparently have the same effect.)
    Super annoying.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15" : LG display issues. Some help??

I have a MacBook Pro Retina 15 "mounting an LG Display. Currently it seems to work perfectly and shows no lack of ghosting of the image. But if from there to a year I'll have problems will Apple recognize them and would provide the repair warranty?
I mean, does Apple recognize the ghosting problem with LG displays?
    Thank you for helping me!

No they do not. In fact just the opposite. Some with LG displays and ghosting have been told by Apple it is normal and all screens do it. When in fact they do not.
Buy Applecare extended warranty. Otherwise when your 1 year standard warranty runs out and you have any problems with that retina you might as well throw it away. The cost to fix that unit, should a problem of any type become apparent, will be close to buying a new unit. All the parts are either soldered to the logic, Mother, board or glued into the aluminum case parts. The few parts that aren't are the logic board itself, the WiFi/Bluetooth daughter card, the fans & heatsink system and the proprietary SSD that plugs into a socket on the logic board.
The screen is glued into the case lid and can not be changed without replacing the complete lid along with the WiFi/BT antennas, the web cam and of course the aluminum shell.
