MacBook Pro running v.slow - is there a way of optimising HD?

My MBP is running like an absolute dog! It's seriously frustrating, feels like I'm working on an 8MB RAM 15 yr old machine at times. I bought it from a printer 2nd hand 2 yrs ago, and was running fine for the first 18 months. It came with Adobe CS3 and Quark XPress 7 installed 7.0 installed, so doubt original copies. Quark especially is dire at times. Some egs of what happens:
- when I log in from sleep with password, sometimes it takes me back to the same log in screen - have to do it twice! Sometimes it literally locks out with a black screen and the arrow cursor - pressing any key or combo of keys (yes, tried force quit & everything) gives what I describe as the 'dom' sound - the low tone single note...?? I have to disconnect from power and remove battery to reboot.
- I get the occasional (which also happens on my Mac Pro) weird window where it enlarges off the foot of the screen. I have to click the green button at top left of window to make the bottom of the window appear, b4 I can then shrink it to what size I want - very annoying. I think this happens sometimes from switching from cover flow, but not 100%.
- Generally takes much to long to react in apps - the rotating spectrum symbol appears on nearly every command.
I just feel the machine is struggling, big time, and feel like I want to totally erase and reinstall, but surely, supposedly the best OS in the world (?), this shouldn't need to be done???
PS. Battery life is virtually nothing, it does need a new one, but this all happens when connected to the mains so presume this is irrelevant?
Any help appreciated.

To answer the question posed in your thread title (sorry, it's long!):
Defragmentation in OS X:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1375?viewlocale=en_US
Whilst 'defragging' OS X is rarely necessary, Rod Hagen has produced this excellent analysis of the situation which is worth reading:
Most users, as long as they leave plenty of free space available , and don't work regularly in situations where very large files are written and rewritten, are unlikely to notice the effects of fragmentation on either their files or on the drives free space much.
As the drive fills the situations becomes progressively more significant, however.
Some people will tell you that "OSX defrags your files anyway". This is only partly true. It defrags files that are less than 20 MB in size. It doesn't defrag larger files and it doesn't defrag the free space on the drive. In fact the method it uses to defrag the smaller files actually increases the extent of free space fragmentation. Eventually, in fact, once the largest free space fragments are down to less than 20 MB (not uncommon on a drive that has , say only 10% free space left) it begins to give up trying to defrag altogether. Despite this, the system copes very well without defragging as long as you have plenty of room.
Again, this doesn't matter much when the drive is half empty or better, but it does when it gets fullish, and it does especially when it gets fullish if you are regularly dealing with large files , like video or serious audio stuff.
If you look through this discussion board you will see quite a few complaints from people who find that their drive gets "slow". Often you will see that say that "still have 10 or 20 gigs free" or the like. On modern large drives by this stage they are usually in fact down to the point where the internal defragmentation routines can no longer operate , where their drives are working like navvies to keep up with finding space for any larger files, together with room for "scratch files", virtual memory, directories etc etc etc. Such users are operating in a zone where they put a lot more stress on their drives as a result, often start complaining of increased "heat", etc etc. Most obviously, though, the computer slows down to a speed not much better than that of molasses. Eventually the directories and other related files may collapse altogether and they find themselves with a next to unrecoverable disk problems.
By this time, of course, defragging itself has already become just about impossible. The amount of work required to shift the data into contiguous blocks is immense, puts additional stress on the drive, takes forever, etc etc. The extent of fragmentation of free space at this stage can be simply staggering, and any large files you subsequently write are likely to be divided into many , many tens of thousands of fragments scattered across the drive. Not only this, but things like the "extents files", which record where all the bits are located, will begin to grow astronomically as a result, putting even more pressure on your already stressed drive, and increasing the risk of major failures.
Ultimately this adds up to a situation where you can identify maybe three "phases" of mac life when it comes to the need for defragmentation.
In the "first phase" (with your drive less than half full), it doesn't matter much at all - probably not enough to even make it worth doing.
In the "second phase" (between , say 50% free space and 20% free space remaining) it becomes progressively more useful, but , depending on the use you put your computer to you won't see much difference at the higher levels of free space unless you are serious video buff who needs to keep their drives operating as efficiently and fast as possible - chances are they will be using fast external drives over FW800 or eSata to compliment their internal HD anyway.
At the lower end though (when boot drives get down around the 20% mark on , say, a 250 or 500 Gig drive) I certainly begin to see an impact on performance and stability when working with large image files, mapping software, and the like, especially those which rely on the use of their own "scratch" files, and especially in situations where I am using multiple applications simultaneously, if I haven't defragmented the drive for a while. For me, defragmenting (I use iDefrag too - it is the only third party app I trust for this after seeing people with problems using TechToolPro and Drive Genius for such things) gives a substantial performance boost in this sort of situation and improves operational stability. I usually try to get in first these days and defrag more regularly (about once a month) when the drive is down to 30% free space or lower.
Between 20% and 10% free space is a bit of a "doubtful region". Most people will still be able to defrag successfully in this sort of area, though the time taken and the risks associated increase as the free space declines. My own advice to people in this sort of area is that they start choosing their new , bigger HD, because they obviously are going to need one very soon, and try to "clear the decks" so that they maintain that 20% free buffer until they do. Defragging regularly (perhaps even once a fortnight) will actually benefit them substantially during this "phase", but maybe doing so will lull them into a false sense of security and keep them from seriously recognising that they need to be moving to a bigger HD!
Once they are down to that last ten per cent of free space, though, they are treading on glass. Free space fragmentation at least will already be a serious issue on their computers but if they try to defrag with a utility without first making substantially more space available then they may find it runs into problems or is so slow that they give up half way through and do the damage themselves, especially if they are using one of the less "forgiving" utilities!
In this case I think the best way to proceed is to clone the internal drive to a larger external with SuperDuper, replace the internal drive with a larger one and then clone back to it. No-one down to the last ten percent of their drive really has enough room to move. Defragging it will certainly speed it up, and may even save them from major problems briefly, but we all know that before too long they are going to be in the same situation again. Better to deal with the matter properly and replace the drive with something more akin to their real needs once this point is reached. Heck, big HDs are as cheap as chips these days! It is mad to struggle on with sluggish performance, instability, and the possible risk of losing the lot, in such a situation.
You do not mention any maintenance you have/have not done:
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

and here:

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

Lastly, is there any reason why you have not updated to 10.5.8 and/or perhaps other updates for security etc?

  • MacBook Pro running insanely slow...

My MacBook Pro runs insanely slow especially when I'm uploading my site from iWeb to a folder on my computer. Other times sometimes the applications take forever to load or they stall when loading. I can never do more than two things at once with it.
What could be causing this problem, and do you think taking it to the Apple store that they'd be able to fix it?

There could easily be stuff on your drive that you don't need that is taking up space. Stuff like funny videos from you tube, logs, caches, demos, Garage band loops, games, music, printer drivers, extra languages--stuff like that. You may be able to reclaim some space by getting rid of some of these or moving some big files to an external hard drive.
There are a couple of utilities which can help you see what's taking up space:
    WhatSize:
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/
    Disk Inventory X
    http://www.derlien.com
Disk Inventory X is free. WhatSize used to be, but I understand there is a small charge for it now.
One caution. If you decide to remove something, be sure you know what it is. There are some programs that you don't use, but your computer does. But the big things will usually be media files of some sort like Garageband or iMovie or iPhoto. And sometimes there will appear a mysterious folder taking up space that was somehow generated. If in doubt, the genius at the Apple Store should be able to tell you what's what.
    Good luck!

  • Why is my macbook pro running so slow and how do I improve the speed?

why is my macbook pro running so slow and how do I improve the speed?

Write off the MS stuff as indicators for now--starting with Office 2008, they developed very long launch times. The time to launch 2008 on my old 1.25Ghz G4 and my MBP 2.2G are virtually the same. Even document opens/saves are slow compared to Office 2004 and earlier.
    1) You have adequate hard drive space so that eliminates one of the usual suspects.
    2) Check for runaway background processes. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage. Watch the processes "bubble" for about a minute to get a better picture of the usage.
If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated. My MBP shows nothing using more that about 5 percent on any given test run as long as I close all my user apps.
    3) If you have never done any sort of maintenance procedures, taht can slow you down. Simply restarting the computer a few times a week clear a lot of temporary files. You also may wish to review this article on the Mac OSX periodic maintenance scripts, which, if run, also do a lot of cleanup:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
There are other useful articles on file maintenance associated with the one. Here's the index:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
Check out articles with "Maintain" and "Tuning" in the titles.
    4) Use Disk Utility to check the SMART Status of your hard drive. A failing drive can make things slow before it makes things stop.

I’ve tried running 10.10 on quite a few different computers with 4GB of RAM and a standard mechanical hard drive and all of them performed worse with Yosemite than they did with Mavericks (10.9). And about a year ago I found that they performed better with Mt Lion (10.8) than Mavericks. Each version of the Mac OS has required more memory than the version that came before it and that means that every couple of years the minimum acceptable RAM is increased. Apple signaled this quietly at the Apple Store - only one computer now ships with 4GB of RAM. (And I can tell you from personal experience that in that configuration it is not fun to use.)
Bottom line: you need at least 8GB of RAM or an SSD. Both are better. In the meantime run as lean a machine as possible. MacKeeper is a waste of money no matter what anyone might tell you. At best it is not necessary and is a waste of money.

Why is my MacBook Pro running so slow after installing Mountain Lion 10.8. I have restarted, created more free space on my hard drive and run disk utilities. Simple operations result 20 seconds or more of the spinning wheel. Some are so slow that the operation does not happen at all. Itunes music cuts out during operations.

Check out this article by Thomas Reed for help http://www.reedcorner.net/understanding-upgrade-nightmares/. Also, make sure all apps are compatible with Mountain Lion using www.roaringapps.com. Do you have any antivirus installed? Make sure all apps are updated as well.

All my electronics are about a year old.   iPad is Model MB293LL (4.2.1) only wi-fi - no phone.
MacBook Pro is  OSX 10.6.8 Build 10K549.  Also have an AT&T iPhone that I basically use as a Palm, since I changed carriers.
    Thank you for your help.
ps: I got an error message and it looks like this did not get posted the first time.  2nd try.

Open the Mac App Store on your MacBook Pro
Hold the Option key and click on “Purchases”
Hold the Option key and click on “OS X Lion” from the purchased app list
“Installed’ should now say “Install” which allows you to download OS X Lion.
This assumes you are using the same Apple ID on both computers.
Lion does not get installed on an iPad. It runs iOS.

@dominic: I did the safe mode start and after the desktop appeard I did nothing and just shut down and start normally again. Is it that?  I was thinking that some window should have popped out of nowwhere and give me some diagnose... and tell me what to do... ?
Then after a normal start I did the disk utility thing, I could only verify and not repair since it seems to be ok? :
Then I tried the SMC reset according to the link you sent me, not sure if I did it right cause step 4 and 5 under
Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own
were somehow the same, after I released everything I didnt have to press power button separately (step5), the mac started already (after step4)
@Lex: I'm really wondering about those two old applications
    1) I didn't find anything useful about camerawindow or canon tools, except that it helps connecting my canon powershot G15 camera with a smartphone... don't even says if it works with my camera model nor if it works with mavericks...
    2) ...Silverlight/OutOfBrowser/SLLauncher.app: Is it needed for what? After looking up it just said useful for webbrowsers, maybe better video quality etc. isn't that something good? if I delete it from my library will there e noteable differences when I use the internet?
besides that i deleted and update like u suggested and did a check again:

    @hands: thanks for note

  • My macbook pro runs extremely slow. I've tried everything on the forums, but nothing has worked.

I made an account just for this. My macbook pro is extremely slow, but only some of the time. When I normally browse it isn't that bad, but using any flash application or playing any game results in a 100-400 (sometimes 350%) CPU usage of the flashplayer. When I play a game something called kernel_task or mdworker take up a lot as well. Here's my EtreCheck, if it helps.

Here is an example of high CPU usage by the way.

  • Macbook pro runs really slow after sleep mode

My MBP ( MacBook Pro (13-inch, medio 2012), 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB), runs very slow after sleep mode. I notice that when I wake it up, my memory usage is nearly 8 GB. After a restart it is back no a normal level, between 2 and 5 GB depending on how many programs I am running. Any ideas what causes this? My IOS is Yosemite 10.10.2
    Kind regards

    Hi Japib
Thanks for your reply. Here is my report:

  • 2008 Macbook Pro running real slow and freezing up

Trying to help out my girlfriend to figure out why her macbook is running so slow when its peviously been fine. Have gone through most of the easy options, having cleared a bunch of space from the HD previously which hasn't helped. Running OSX 10.6.6 Hoping that someone will see something in etrecheck that'll help me out. Any other advice would be great.
    Cheers.

  • MacBook Pro running very slow over 1 hour to boot up

I was out of the country on a trip and my daughter's MBP (15" early 2011) refused to boot. It was stuck on the gray screen with the rotating gear. She made an appointment at the genius bar and they told her basically the computer was dead in the water due to a crashed hard drive and she should contact a data recovery service to recover her personal data then come back and they will install a new hgard drive and get her up and running. After I returned I removed the hard drive and took it to the IT department at my company. A tech there was able to access the drive via a USB/SATA cable and  copy the contents to an external hard drive. He ran HD Tune on the drive and found no errors. I re-nstalled the drive and it still had the same problem. I am more of a Windows guy myself so I'm not 100% confident of my Mac/OSX skills. Obviously the genius at the genius bar wasn't exactly right since as you will see if he simply tried a safe boot he would have been able to gain access to the computer. But following is what I have already done.
1). I was able to boot into safe boot mode(Shift key during boot process). Under Safe mode I was able to log in under a Guest account. I could not successfully log in under her user account. Under the Guest Account I ran Disk utility and verified and reset preferences as I read somewhere this could be an issue. It found many issues (I would guess around 100). I also ran the verify disk and disk repair (or wahatever it is called). Disk Utility informed my that I had to reboot into repair mode (Command & R) and run DIsk Utility in that mode.
2). Rebooted into Repair Mode (Command & R). It took a while for the spinning globe to get rid of the triangle with the exclamation point but eventually I was in the Internet Repair Feature (Or whatever it is called). I ran Disk Utility and did a repair. It found system file errors and reported back that they were repaired. Wihile in Repair mode I looked under the "restore" tab and noticed that OSX Lion was shown. But in the computer's "About this Mac" it shows OSX 10.9. My daughter confirmed that she had previously updated the OS twice via the App Store so I guess that is why Lion shows under the restore tab.
3). I did a reboot to reset PRAM/NVRAM hoping that would assist as well as I had seen some entries that this was a good thing to do with very slow response problems.
4). I rebooted and waited. After about 20 minutes the log in screen came up and I log in under her user account. About 30 minutes later most of the desktop had loaded. About an hour and a half into the boot I was able to navigate the desktop but the was at least a 2 second delay between clicking on something and it acting. Often I had the spinning "rainbow wheel", "beach ball", "umbrella" or whatever your preference is.
So bottom line is I am no longer stuck on the gray screen but the computer is totally unusable. I'm not sure what my next step should be. SHould I restore the OS to Lion via the Command & R procedure? If I do that then will she be able to reload 10.9 Mavericks again via download?
If she has a friend with a MBP already running Mavericks can she make a USB boot drive on that machine to repair/replace her existing OSX installation?
Should I just reformat the hard drive and start fresh since something isn't making the MBR happy?
Also under disk utility the SMART report shows the drive as healthy.
Here are the basic specs of the machine as is:
    OSX 10.9 (13A603)
    8GB Ram 1333 NHz DDR3
    Hard Drive: 499Gb total/263GB available
    Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

    LPBassman,
since the tech in your IT department was able to copy your daughter’s data from her MacBook Pro’s internal disk, I’d suggest completely erasing the internal disk (using Disk Utility in Recovery mode, reformatting it with a “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” filesystem), reïnstalling its original version of Mac OS X (either Snow Leopard from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD if it originally came with two grey DVDs, or Lion via OS X Internet Recovery if no grey DVDs originally came with it), running Software Update to get it to 10.6.8 or 10.7.5 respectively, reïnstalling Mavericks, running Software Update again to get it up to date, and finally restoring your daughter’s data.

  • My Macbook Pro runs VERY slow when unplugged. The battery charges and runs ok. Ran an SMC reset (no success), Safe mode (did not work), and hardware check (came back ok). What can I try next to fix this?

    Hello all,
I am new to posting on this forum but I really hope that someone out there can help me out. I have a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, running OSX 10.6.8. My problem is that when I unplug the laptop form the charger and run it on the battery, the computer becomes unresponsive to any commands at all. It basically really slows down to a crawl. Even when rebooting it will take 5-10 minutes or more to do so. The odd thing is, when it gets plugged back in while any of this is going on, within a minute or two it works perfectly. It has been in a mac authorized repair shop for 7 weeks and has had a new logic board and a new hard drive replaced. The battery was tested and charges fine, holds a charge when unplugged, and the system profile shows the battery at Normal. Recently, many knowledgeable mac enthusiasts gave me tip that might help. Here is what I did: Ran an SMC reboot (no success), rebooted the computer under safe mode then unplugged it to test (no success), and ran a hardware test on the install disk (showed hardware ok)
I am at a loss as to what to do next. It has become impossible to use this laptop for my classes when it is unplugged. I am about ready to just go buy a new one, and call this one a goner.
I am hoping someone reading this can help with any other ideas on its problem. Help? Anyone?
    Steve

  • Macbook Pro Running Very Slow and Locks Up Often

I am hoping one of the experts on here might be able to help me out!
My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) has really started to run incredibly slow.  I am certain I have crap on here I don't need that is causing issues, but I have been unable to troubleshoot what exactly is going on.
I looked through prior discussions: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5437363?start=225&tstart=0 and tried some of the tips there to see if I could improve performance.  It didn't seem to work.
I included an EtreCheck below and I can send anything else that might be helpful.
Thanks in advance for trying to help me out!

I had all of these troubles before Mavericks, and it doesn't seem to be any worse after I installed Mavericks yesterday.
It is almost to the point where I can not work at all in certain apps as it just freezes.
    Steps I have taken:
    - Reset the System Management Controller
    - Checked the battery cycle count (331)
    - Verified and repaired disk and permissions.
    - Cleaned up as many things as I could find.
Here is an updated EtreCheck after I did some cleanup myself.
I also have included some of the most recent system logs.

  • Macbook Pro running extremely slow (log included) especially when safari is opened. How can I fix this?

    Hello
When I open my macbook it is running extremely slow - especially once I launch safari. It can take minutes to load a page or for a page I am already typing on to even respond. I have pasted below part of my log from the application - Console. I have not included all of it as it was 7 pages long but please let me know if you need further information. Thank you for any help!

Start by removing "Rapport" and "Elmedia Player," both of which are much worse than useless. If there's no improvement, post again.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
