Macbook Pro Running Very Slowly

Lately, my Macbook Pro has been running very slowly. The rainbow wheel keeps popping up and it takes a very long time to open windows or quit applications. Also, the computer gets really slowly even if only a few applications are open (e.g. Microsoft Word and iTunes). This problem has started recently, a few months after installing OSX 10.9.5. I don't know if this is the problem, if the hard drive needs to be cleared, some programs are taking up too much RAM, or if the computer is just getting old. Any help would be appreciated, and I have included the EtreCheck below as well.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • MacBook Pro running very slowly - please see EtreCheck report

My MacBook Pro (mid 2012 model) has become very slow and unresponsive recently. Pretty much any click or command I make there is a delay, and often the coloured spinning wheel appears for a few seconds until it executes the command. Very frustrating. I know this is a popular question, but I've pasted my EtreCheck report below, s others have done. Any tips on what I should do would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • MacBook Pro running very slowly. Please help.

Since I upgraded to OSX 10.8.2, my computer has been running very slowly--painfully slow in some instances. I have 4GB memory, 2.4/2.2 Ghz Intel processor, 500 GB harddrive (184.64 GB free). I purchased Snow Leopard as a downloadable upgrade from the app store, so I do not have any disks. Any suggestions? Thanks! (Please be very specific as I can follow instructions, but am not a tech wiz.)

You mean to say you upgraded from 10.6 Snow Leopard to 10.8 Mountain Lion via the AppStore.
10.6 isn't available from Apple as a downloadable option, only via disks.
so I do not have any disks.
10.8 has a bootable partition on the boot drive that acts like a boot disk.
Please be very specific as I can follow instructions, but am not a tech wiz.
Well you can try reading these  links first, then decide if you want to handle it or allow a local professional to speed up your system. (Apple won't)
Some Mac's shouldn't even be upgraded to 10.7 or 10.8, despite what Apple says as it slows them down too much (and drives a premature hardware upgrade )
    Why is my computer slow?

  • Macbook Pro running very slowly, randomly shutting off and overheating. No idea what the problem is! Please help!

I got macbook pro about a year and a half ago and up until now it has been running fine.
However, in the last few days, it has been started to run tediously slowly!
It wont allow me to open applications and i have to force quit out of any applications I finally manage to have because they freeze or stop responding.
On Google Chrome, pages become unresponsive every few minutes.
Even writing this post took more than 20 minutes as the laptop kept freezing and the webpage became unresponsive.
It also randomly shuts off and when it restarts, a message comes up saying my Macbook was restarted because of an error.
I haven't downloaded or updated anything that I know of recently that would have caused this.
Ive been reading through some of the fourms on this and I thought it'd be helpfull to post some of the information you may need to help me solve this problem!
Id be very gratefull if any of you could help! Thanks!

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Macbook pro running very slowly when the energy cable is unplugged?

    Hey Guys.
My laptop has this exact same problem. I got it in March 2012, and it was working perfectly fine both on power and on the battery.
I'm trying to apply this solution, but I'm stuck on step 3, because my Extensions folder is empty. There are no files at all in there. My Pathway was Macintosh HD/Library/Extensions/ please advice if this is the right folder.
    Thanks in advance.
Oh and I ran a hardware test and it said everything was fine.
    <Re-Titled By Host>

I’ve tried running 10.10 on quite a few different computers with 4GB of RAM and a standard mechanical hard drive and all of them performed worse with Yosemite than they did with Mavericks (10.9). And about a year ago I found that they performed better with Mt Lion (10.8) than Mavericks. Each version of the Mac OS has required more memory than the version that came before it and that means that every couple of years the minimum acceptable RAM is increased. Apple signaled this quietly at the Apple Store - only one computer now ships with 4GB of RAM. (And I can tell you from personal experience that in that configuration it is not fun to use.)
Bottom line: you need at least 8GB of RAM or an SSD. Both are better. In the meantime run as lean a machine as possible. MacKeeper is a waste of money no matter what anyone might tell you. At best it is not necessary and is a waste of money.

  • My MacBook is running very slowly since upgrading to Yosemite

My MacBook is running very slowly since upgrading to Yosemite I have lots of room on my hard disc.  All applications are working but very slowly.  Help!

When the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Why is my macbook pro running so slowly all of a sudden?

Just recently my 13" Macbook Pro started to run very slowly. When I search something on google, the spinning wheel will pop up as my cursor and remain for about 30 seconds while I am unable to do or click on anything and if itunes is playing in the background then the song will stop abruptly. Everything eventually loads but its just a pain in the butt. Before this i was doing the exact same type of things with my computer and it handled them fine so i do not believe its an issue of RAM. THis happened to me once before and when I turned my computer back on it just got to the gray apple logo and would go no further, somehow my harddrive failed. Any information or help on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro running very hot

    Hi all,
My mid-2010 Macbook pro is running very hot. On average CPU is 61-70 degrees Celsius, sometimes even more. I'm pretty bad at having lots of chrome tabs open and heavy multitasking, but even when I'm not temperature still ends up very high and fan rpm can get to over 6000. Heat seems to be concentrated to the lefthand side of the touchpad (battery area?). I'm running 10.9.3.
Current stats below from iStat pro widget (smcFanControl concurs with these temps), with only the following pic's activity running. Laptop currently balanced on two books (so airflow around the sides) which are in turn on my lap.
I have tried reseting the SMC with the shift-control-option-power method but it doesn't seem to have worked - instructions said to press and hold this, then release, then press power again to boot, but laptop boots up from this combination anyway.
Am I just doing something wrong or will this be an expensive trip to the apple store to fix?

    Hey happyhaskins,
If you are having an issue with your MacBook Pro running excessively hot, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • My Macbook is running very slowly...

It runs very slowly sometimes, even when I quit programs to reduce workload etc. Any ideas about how to tell what's going on?

If you open Activity and select the System Memory tab and look at the Page ins/outs data. If your page outs go over 20% or so of your page ins then you simply need a RAM upgrade.
Just FYI, a page out occurs when data on RAM is "paged" out to virtual memory which resided on your hard disk. many page outs results in a far from optimal system performance and can be remedied by upgrading your RAM. The higher the page out percentage the more RAM it is suggested that you buy. In the best case your page out count should be zero. This means that you do not need to temporarily more data out to virtual memory signifying you have enough RAM.
