Macbook Pro runs slow using Mountain Lion?
I have access to use a Macbook Pro which is running Mountain Lion. However, the MBP runs very slowly and the coloured wheel is constantly spinning with almost everything I try to do. I do not know why and would like to be able to have a normal running MBP.
I wondered whether installing Yosemite might help? Or I have read some posts about resetting the System Management Controller. Please can someone give me some advice as to what to do that will work?
Thank you
Installing Yosemite will probably NOT help.
Slow MBPs usually are a result of a failing HDD, third party software (often so called 'cleaning' or 'performance' applications) or unnecessary AV software.
SMC resets are good for certain hardware issues and will also probably NOT address the issue.
Download and post an Etrecheck report which may provide some clues:

MacBook Pro runs slow after Mountain Lion installation
I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro with 2.2g Ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB encrypted disc.
After installing Mountain Lion and the recent upgrade OS X 10.8.1 (12B19), the system runs noticibly slower than with Lion, which ran slower than the previous version. This shows up in opening and closing programs, rate that drop down windows appear when something is clicked on the task bar, rate that windows open and close, rate that the dock comes up and the icons expand when the curser is moved over them, etc.
Due to my type of work, I need to encrypt the disc. I know this is costing me some speed. I unencrypted the disc and it ran noticably faster, and when I re-encrypted it seemed to run faster than before unencrptying and re-encripting. I have repaired permissions and verified the disk OK.
Somewhere in the build up to Mountain Lion release I thought I read where 4 GB of ram was recomended for Mountain Lion, allthough now the specs indicate 2 GB is OK. In activity monitor, the pie chart for system memory seems to always remain less than about 40% of active memory (yellow).
What recomendations does the community have to increase the speed of operations back to when this system was new?
DaveI was having the exact same problem. My MacBook Pro was seriously close to unusable how slow it was. On a different thread, someone recommended I reset the VRAM and PVRAM (not sure about those initials). Shut down computer. Rebooted while holding down Command-Option-P-R all at the same time until I heard the second startup tone and then released. I noticed an improvement in performance immediately.

Why is my macbook pro running slow with mountain lion?
After installing Mountain Lion, I find navigating, opening programs, etc. is taking more time, why is this?
Immediately after installing Mountain Lion, your system will be rebuilding the Spotlight index. This should only take a couple of hours at most. If the problem persists you can run diagnostics. I just happen to have written a little diagnostic program recently. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.

HT4818 windows 7 on macbook pro 6,2 using Mountain Lion
I have a macbook pro 6,2. I decided to remove the optical drive and add an ssd drive. After that I installed mountain lion and now I'm trying to install windows 7 using bootcamp but I can not do that, the external drive do not boot and usb does not work no matter what I choose on the boot screen (alt when the computer is turned on).
I proved the external drive on another macbook pro 5.1 and it works perfectlyI don't think that's what I said. What is the internal drive on the computer? In other words what drive resides in the optical bay? You can install Windows on the drive that is NOT in the optical bay as long as it has OS X installed.
Open Boot Camp Assistant in the Utilities folder. Click on the Print Documentation button, read the documentation carefully before proceding further. -
Why is my MacBook Pro running hot after mountain lion upgrade?
The fan is on high all the time and the system is running very hot. It also consumes the battery way faster than it used to.
Thanks for your links. My MacBook fan was running constantly from switch on and the underside was getting very hot. Using your first link, I followed the Activity Monitor instructions and found that Dashboard was using '117%'. As soon as I closed it down the fan instantly slowed and after only a few seconds switched off..
Thanks again.. -
Did macbook air mid 2009 running slow with mountain lion?
did macbook air mid 2009 running slow with mountain lion?
Yours is the first computer I've heard about on these forums that is attempting to run Mavericks with only 2GB of RAM.
Indeed that is acceptable per the Mavericks requirements:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842
... but as you may know, Apple has not sold computers with as little as 2GB RAM for quite a while.
I suggest therefore you make sure you remove any applications that may be overtaxing your machine. Examples are browsers other than Safari, Mac cleaning products (such as Mac Keeper), or any other non-Apple app that has some startup process running (such as Outlook). -
Why is my Macbook Pro running slow after I downloaded the new Lion software? I have a 2.26 GHz intel core 2 duo? whats Wrong?
Spotlight may be indexing your drive(s). Click the Spotlight icon at the right of your menubar; if it shows things being indexed, that's at least some of the reason.

Just upgrade my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 to Mountain Lion and tried to connect with Apple TV 3th gen. through Airplay and couldn't mirrorring video on my LG Smart TV screen.
Just paid US 99.00 for Apple TV plus US 19.99 to Mountain Lion for nothing @?$%& !!!!
Back again to mini display to hdmi cable.
could you help me????It is stated that mirroring requires recent hardware (2011 or later)
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404
However you can still use 3rd party solutions like Airparrot which do it via software -
Is there a plug in to make my 2007 macbook pro able to install Mountain Lion
Is there a plug or something in to make my 2007 macbook pro able to install Mountain Lion?
I bought it in early 2007 so just miss out on the cut off point. Is compatibilty based on Hardware or software?
Thanks

No. The architechture is too old. I think Lion will be as far as you can go, as a guess without knowing your specs. But if the machine cannot run Mountain Lion then there is no way of doing it (short of replacing the mechanics which would be more expensive than buying a more up to date Mac)

I have to input a password to log in to my Macbook Pro Santa Rosa under Mountain Lion. Now suddenly the built-in keyboard doesn't work at all so I cannot use my computer. I also notice that the bluetooth function is activated automatically even though I turn it off. It looks for an external keyboard. Please help me out. Many thanks!
I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2. My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone). I was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.

Hi all,
I posted a question last week about my Macbook Pro running slow, pinwheel on Safari etc, I was asked to run etrecheck which I have but not sure if it is highlighting the issue or not, so I have included the results below.
If anyone could take a look and let me know if something jumps out at you.
Many thanks in advance

ThanksAre you running both VirtualBox and Parallels? The sad thing is that you've only 2GB of RAM - and your machine can be upgraded to 8GB which would, in your case, have a tremendous impact on the speed of your machine (I'm not certain why EtreCheck is saying that the 2GB of RAM is not upgradable).
2GB just isn't enough to run modern versions of OS X - not even the Lion OS that you're running now. If you want more performance from your machine, upgrade your RAM. You can go to the Crucial website or the OWC website and find the RAM that's right for your machine.
Good luck,
Clinton

Hi,
I have the old MacBook Pro. Upgraded to Mountain Lion which completely wrecked the system. So downgraded to Snow Leopard.
Then updated the combo update. Now stuck on blue screen at start-up.
Need help. Greatly appreciated. Thank you.Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files. -
My Parallels program is now not working since upgrading my MacBook Pro to OS X Mountain Lion. I was wondering if there is a solution to getting this working again?
You just need to update it to the latest version. See:

Looking for login items is probably a better bet. You do this by opening System Preferences and then looking into Accounts. From there you should see a tab for Login Items. There will be some things you want to keep. iTunes helper and some other helper files are actually nice to have around, but you may have things that look like total sludge. Get rid of those. If you aren't sure, try to google the name of the program and you will likely get some more info about it before destroying it. -
