Macbook pro runs slowly even with tons of free memory??
Hi,
I've seriously tried to follow everyone's advice on how to keep your Macbook running efficiently, even so I have serious problems with it. For one thing, Microsoft Office programs run more slowly on my Macbook Pro than they would on a PC from 1995. If I open Word or Excel, it takes at least 6 minutes to load, and then functions ok (most of the time) but if I try to save a file, graphics wig out and typing the name of the file, it's like each letter is processed 3 seconds at a time after taking a whole minute to understand what I'm even typing in the first place. I use Google Chrome (no, safari doesn't run any faster) and I sometimes have issues with that. Finder also! It takes so long to click around my folders because my computer responds so slowly. It also sometimes wigs out when I try to jump between desktop screens. And actually even the mouse cursor decides not to respond for a few seconds.
I have 411 GB (out of 500) of free memory. I don't run multiple apps at once--usually I will run Chrome and Word, and then if I absolutely must, also Excel or Powerpoint, but I really try to use at most 3 at a time, and then I still have these severe problems. Sometimes I only have Word open and I still have these problems. My desktop is not cluttered; I clean it out regularly so I have like 5 files on there, pretty much all screenshots. My downloads folder does not have a billion files in it; it has accumulated some but I do make an effort to clean it regularly so there really isn't much. I don't have tons of music or movies or pictures or anything on my computer, and I also clean out my deleted files in the trash regularly.
That being said, I'm not an expert on computer maintenance (because I always seem to have these issues), so maybe there are other things I haven't tried that people could recommend? I'm pretty sure that my RAM or CPU (I don't know the difference because I don't know much about computers) are being overexhausted, because sometimes I can actually hear the fan going off because my Mac is trying hard to process stuff (this happened 5 minutes ago when I had nothing but Chrome opened but I restarted and now it's quiet again). But I don't know how to check RAM or CPU usage on my Mac? And since I don't run that many apps anyway I don't know how to resolve this problem.
Is there anything else I can try? Some other folders I should clean out? If so, can you please explain where to find these folders on OS X Yosemite? Because I used to be a person, but I bought this Macbook Pro a year ago and I still have trouble navigating. Or if you think I should take this into the apple store and have it looked at, please let me know.
Thanks in advance. \
When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Hi there,
I have an early 2011 13" Macbook Pro running OSX 10.8.4. For the past six months or so, my computer has been running relatively slowly. I brought it into a shop, but the guy couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. In the past two months or so, the sound has been terrible, whether it's watching youtube videos or listening to something on itunes or playing a game. it will sound fine, until like 30 seconds in when it will go all crunchy and garbled and terrible sounding. I don't know how else to describe it. Just now, my computer randomly turned off in the middle of me playing a game, and at first it wouldn't turn back on. I'm a little freaked out by that, as I'm a graduate school student and my computer is my life. I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong with it. :/
I've attached the crash report from the shut down here. Does anyone know what this means? Thanks for your help!

Macbook Pro Running Slowly and Pinwheeling a lot
I have been having an issue with my macbook pro running very slowly lately. Everything just feels slugglish, and sometimes menus and other programs take a while to respond. I have 4 GB of RAM, and I just feel like things are running too slow for a computer with a Core2Duo and 4 Gigs of RAM. I have snow leopard installed.
Also, the computer came with 2GB, but I upgraded to 4 myself. I did not buy the memory from Apple though, I bought it directly from crucial. Is it possible the memory has gone bad or something. I really don't know what to do.Do you still have the slowness problem when running OSX from the DVD (not running AHT)?
Is this symptom occasional, or all the time?
Most of the classic problems causing slowness that can be user fixed have been covered, but it does not mean totally eliminated.
The hard drive can still be intermittently bad despite the SMART status. I would put the original RAM back, and boot from an external Firewire hard drive with my backup HD clone. If you don't have one, you should - you might need it sooner than you think. This test can confirm if your internal HD is causing this or not.
I suppose it's also possible that you've developed a software problem and reloading OSX might help. This is quite a lot of work without a backup clone or Time Machine backup. You may have to take it to a technician if you don't feel up to doing this. -
Macbook Pro running slowly and crashing with sleep
Title says it all, really. Whenever I open my Macbook Pro, after closing it to sleep, I have to hard-reset my computer by holding down the power button. Occasionally this problem springs up if I manually have my computer sleep, but typically only when I close it. Additionally, recently it's started running quite slowly as well. I've tried verifying/repairing permissions on the boot disk, but "Repair volume" just does the same thing over and over when I try it. I have 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 2.7GHz DualCore Intel i7 processor, and the Intel HD3000 Graphics Card chipset. 500GB internal hard drive (not a Solid State Drive to my knowledge), of which a little more than half is used. I'm pretty sure my laptop is the 2011 model. I'm running OS 10.7.2, or whatever the latest official release happens to be. Any help would be appreciated, seeing as I close my laptop between classes during the day, and having to reboot it every class is incredibly obnoxious.
I can't provide screenshots at the moment. I live near UNH so I sent it in to them for a supposed hardware fix - I got an email today saying what they tried didn't do anything. I read somewhere about deleting a certain extension relating to power management of the CPU (AppleIntel______.kext), but I didn't get to try it before I sent my computer in, and I can't find that article again. The only thing I had recently installed was Poker Night at the Inventory (a game from Steam), but I installed that on a separate laptop with no issues (my dad's 15" MBP). The fresh Lion install did put me up to 1.7.3. My activity monitor shows like this, normally, only "kernel_task" is taking up 300% CPU and my entire little CPU-meter at the bottom is filled with red. This is a screenshot from my dad's Mac, right now, which is identical to mine except it's a 15" instead of a 13".

2012 Macbook Pro running slowly since mavericks update
Since updating to Mavericks when it was first released my macbok pro has been running very slowly. Starting up apps takes longer, hangs occur when switching between apps or even browser tabs, when i close the lid the laptop won't go to sleep but instead heats up and i can't listen to a song on itunes the whole way through without several 20 or so second pauses. I have tried repair permissions (this oddly improves performance when its running), resetting NVRAM/PRAM. resetting SMC and a Hardware test but nothing worked/ no problems identified. The problems still occur in safe mode and when i added a new user. I also removed any apps or software that could be causing it such as chrome but this didn't help.
Similar problems occured the last time i update the mac, though they were much more severe and lead to the hard drive being replaced at the apple store. It had been running smoothly until the mavericks update.
After looking at similar posts i took the liberty of providing the following information:

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you have tried a lot of good troubleshooting steps. Since the behavior persists in safe mode and a new user, and you have effectively ruled out third party software conflicts, I recommend reinstalling Mavericks next:

Why is my macbook pro running slowly?
My macbook pro is running really slowly, even after I reinstalled the OS. I thought I would just live with it, but then I found etrecheck and thought I could get some help through this forum. Rebooting doesn't seem to help. Here's the output from Etrecheck. Any feedback would be very much appreciated:

MacBook Pro running Windows XP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8
When I got a MacBook Pro in 2006 I gave a small partition to my husband so he could log into his computer at the office. I used Boot Camp and an OEM WIndows XP disk. Everything ran smoothly for 5 years... last week he started having problems with windows and after doing some diagnostics and deletions we were able to get the system up and running.
I have recently gotten a newer MacBook Pro and decided I should wipe the old one clean, give him a larger partition and reinstall everything. SO... I downloaded lion wiped the drive clean and reinstalled system software. Opened up Boot Camp clicked download Windows support software got an error. After searching support found that Lion doesn't support XP... His company still uses XP and he's not that computer Savvy so it makes sense to keep him with what he's familiar with (plus who wants to buy another windosOS)... SO I decided to reinstall the original disk of Snow Leopard, re partitioned the drive loaded XP, used the Windows installer disk I originally made with the Boot Camp beta version I downloaded 5+ years ago and everything was hunky dory... till this morning when I logged on to his system to do further installs and it says that hardware changes had been made and that WIndows needed to be "reactivated" click here... so I do and find the internet connection was missing (?) Works fine on the mac so it's a windows issue.
So I put in the windows xp disk to see if I can reinstall the OS and get an error "no boot disc"... I just decided to start over but am wondering if I made a mistake using the "mac windows installers" disk I made years ago. I go on to support and tried to download a newer version of the installers and it wants to give me an older version of Boot Camp.(am now thinking I might have had regular leopard when I first set up the initial partition/install for Windows)
I realize this is all long winded and maybe somewhat confusing. Bottom line is... I have a macbook pro that I need to install Windows XP on. Am I on the right track (planning to reinstall the XP disk but NOT repartition, etc.) Should I go back to Leopard? Should I erase the partition and start over? is there more updated Windows drivers I should be using??? SHould I bite the big one and buy Windows 7 and go forward from there?

Windows looks terribly awkward and I'm guessing it has something to do with the ATI graphics card sofware the mac disk installed. Is is ok to use the one I created years ago? I can't seem to find a place to create a new one using the 10.8.6 and 3.0.4.
When I orignially installed Boot Camp you had to create a disk using Boot Camp that you installed in Windows after the initial OS installation. -
My Macbook Pro running slow even after format
Hello guys, I've had this problem with my 2009 unibody 13" Macbook Pro for at least a month. Last month I tried to reinstall OSX Lion which i previously had, but the install failed for saveral attemps (probably for my slow internet). I finally managed to get OSX Lion on and it was increadibly slow even no programs are installed so I reinstalled it again and again but the same problem still comes up. So i went to an Apple Store (Thailand) and the apple guy assisted me by trying harddisk permission repair, reinstalling the os again, none worked, i still get a super slow computer. So I went home and downgraded the os to snow leopard, it seemed to work just fine at first but after i install several (4-5) basic applications, it started to get slow again (still faster than when it was lion). Whenever i open two or three applications at once or even browsing a webpage alone i get the spinning rainbow cursor. Somebody told me its probably the harddrive, who do u think? please help - thanks.
Yes it is your hard drive.
Backup your files off the machine and before you reinstall OS X again, this time use the 10.6 disk > Disk Utility > Erase with Security Option > Zero All Data, make sure your ENTIRE hard drive is slected on the left.
Let that complete and install 10.6, then update to 10.6.8, that should be the fastest OS X version for that machine.
If you go to 10.7, it's going to slow down a little bit again.
If you can't complete the Zero erase (it takes some time to finish) after trying 2x and or still having problems after that, then the drive is causing the defective sectors and needs to be replaced.
Keep your boot drive below 50% filled for maximum performance, but never more than 80% filled.

MacBook Pro Runs Slowly In Everything
I have a 2011 notebook with a 2.3 i5 processor and 4GB of 1333 MHz ram. I'm running 10.7.5 and the whole thing runs slowly in every respect. Accessing data, running internet and even closing apps. I run cleanup software regularly but nothing seems to help.
Do any of the following questions apply to your computer:
1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimizations" applications? Which ones?
3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?
All can cause slowness. The Etrecheck report Esquared has wisely requested is an excellent first step in discovering if any of the above are at play. The program is safe, doesn't reveal any personal information, and was written by one of our most helpful contributors here. -
Like so many others, my 2009 MacBook Pro has become noticeably slower in the past month or two. After reading the forums, I ran my disk repair, then downloaded and ran the EtreCheck software. Here are my results. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

0 B Page-outsBrad,
I think this is a good choice. I "zero" any computer I get right out of the box, then reinstall OS X myself.
Boot to your OS X install disk (isert the disk, then start or restart while holding down the "C" key. Your MBP will boot to the install disk.
Once the installer loads, choose a language for the installer, then open Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu. In Disk Utility's list on the left, select your computer's HD. Not the "volume" name indented underneath, but the device you will see listed at the top.
In the "Erase" pane of Disk Utility, you will see a button labeled "Security Options." Click on this button. In the dialogue that appears, check the option for "Zero Out Data," then confirm your choice to return to the "Erase" pane. Choose a name for the new volume that will be created, then click "Erase."
This process will take up to an hour. When it has completed, quit Disk Utility to return to the installer, then proceed to install a new copy of OS X.

Macbook Pro running slowly (EtreCheck information included)
My MacBook Pro suddenly started performing very slowly. I tried rebooting in recovery mode by holding command + R at start up, but nothing happens. I have tried to perform a software update, and when I do so, it checks for updates, and asks me to restart my computer so they can be installed, but the computer just restarts and doesn’t do any software updates. Not sure what else I can do.
