Hi RobertRak
I can only say I have a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB installed in my MacBook Pro 17”. Speeds are exquisite: Write: 479.1MB/s Read: 508.9MB/s
Like Melophage, I left the Optical drive in place.
My only thought for your case is to check firmware of the Samsung SSD drive.
Samsung SSD website: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads.html
I think i used DiskUtility to clone the ISO to USB flashdrive or CD-RW. It was a challenge to get the Mac to boot from their DOS, but once successful you should get to the latest firmware. The Samsung needs to be in the internal SATA connection.
Be aware that the POST check your Mac does on startup will always take time. Depends on amount of RAM, how long your other internal spindle drive takes to get to speed and unpark the heads etc.
Can't say i've counted the boot time on mine. I know it's quicker now since putting the SSD in.
You will need at least 10% free space left on the boot SSD too BTW.
Hope this assists.

  • Macbook pro wont sleep after ram upgrade

    Hi,
I have a 17" Macbook pro late 2011. I upgraded the ram from 8gb to 16gb last week and now I having trouble with sleep. When the laptop goes to sleep it always to seems to go into hibernation mode. When I open the lid I can only wake the computer by holding the power button for around 7 secs and then it does a restore from the HD. I've tried a PRAM + SMC reset. Also tested the ram and everything seems good. Below is the output from pm set, the console after hibernation restore (filtered for the word 'sleep') and the memtest. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi fatlinesofcode,
First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.
    Good luck!

  • My Macbook Pro wont boot after upgrading to SSD, A ? Mark on Folder appears

    Hello all,
I just put in a new SSD into my mid 2012, 13" macbook pro. This is the exact SSD http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=77394 89&tab=7&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_mmc=Email-_-WebletMain-_-WEBLET03ORDER-_-Deals &utm_source=EML&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_lm=noahbragg@cedar ville.edu
I swapped out my optical drive and put in the SSD using this tutorial, http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Dual +Hard+Drive/13787 Everything seemed to go fine and i had no problems. But when I tried to start up the computer it stayed on a gray screen and a foler with a question mark on it, showed up blanking. I have looked all over for the internet for the answer, I have tried to reset the PRAM but it did nothing. I then tried to select what drive i wanted to boot from by holding the option key when i booted, but when the options came up, SSD or old harddrive did not come up as a way to boot up. There were some internet options to recover but they did not work.
The SSD has nothing on it at this point, but my plan was to boot up using the original HD and then clone it over to the SSD, but ovbiously i cant even find the HD to boot to. I have seen that people are having troubles with booting to their SSD because of the new mavericks update, but i am just trying to boot to my original HD at this point.
I also considered that maybe i possibly damaged the HD cables through static electricty, but when i searched more about it i learned that i should have heard snap or felt a jolt. None of these things happened when i installed the SSD. So i beleive that the hard drive or SSD are not broken in any way.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how i can fix this? Need my computer very badly! thanks in advance.

I also forgot to mention that after the first time i tried to boot, it went to the normal screen where it wanted me to put in my apple id password. but the loading wheel was just spinning the whole time. so i turned off the computer and tried again. thats when the question mark folder came up and kept coming up everytime after that.

  • Samsung SSD in Macbook Pro, slow boot.

So I bought an 256GB Samsung 830 SSD for my Macbook Pro (mid 2009 2.66Ghz 15"). Anyway, I installed it tonight and I've been having a lot of problems with it as an internal drive. I had been using a 750GB WD Black for a long time and it's worked great. So first, I put the SSD in the Internal, and put the Mountain Lion Install USB in, and it would never install. I could format the drive using the USB Disk, but I couldn't install it. I kept getting an error about downloading extra components. Well I put it in an External Firewire enclosure and put the WD back in the computer, and ran the ML installer from inside Mountain Lion. Lo and behold, from Firewire, it boots up very fast and everything. So once it was all installed and setup using the external, I put the SSD inside the computer. Now, it takes about 2 minutes on the Apple screen, then I get a cursor for a few seconds, then no Apple, and a spinning grey pinwheel that never goes away. The WD HDD has been working beautifully the past year and given the SSD works great externally, i'm not sure what the deal is. I've reset the NVRAM, and SMC. So when I boot from my WD HDD in the External, it boots fine. So I went to System Prefs and tried to set the SSD as the startup disk. It won't let me, says something about the Bless tool.  Any thoughts as to what is going on? I hope the SSD isn't bad, but since it works great outside the computer but not in, i'm wondering what's going on.
    Thanks!

Also some more background: When I got the 750 WD over a year ago (about a year and a half) my computer got all sorts of freezes. Well I narrowed it down to the 1.7 Firmware. So I downgraded to the 1.6 Firmware and it fixed my problem. So I was running the 1.6 Firmware until this July, when I had to take my computer to get the Logic Board replaced (Well, screen was first but the Geniuses messed up, so they had to put a new logic board in) and the firmware is now 1.7, but I haven't had any problems with the drive since. That goes for Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. So old logic board wouldn't work with 1.7, new logic board did. I'm wondering if it is the firmware giving me fits, because if so i'll just send the drive back because there's no use running at 1.5Gbps when the drive is capable of far beyond that.

  • MacBook Pro slow shutdown after installing SSD drive

    Hi,
    Just got a new 256GB SSD drive and installed it in my Macbook Pro, super super fast might I add. Startup in a couple of seconds, and apps open very fast. The only problem is the shutdown time, it takes over a minute to shutdown, really strange. I've read this post;
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13097765
But this does not solve my problem. Any ideas what could be the problem?

Have you tried booting into your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting).
I don't know why an iTunes update would cause your MBP to shutdown and not turn back on. If you can't boot into your Recovery partition, try running the Apple Hardware Test (if you can - if you can't, it's time for a trip to your local Apple Store or AASP).

  • Macbook pro slow start after upgrading to mountain lion

I have a macbook pro core 2 due originally runing Mac os x 10.6. I upgraded to mac os x 10.8.1 now and realized that the computer becomes slow start and shut down. Scanned with OnlyX and followed the instruction by restarting with hold down option-command-P and R, showed no help.
How could I solve the problem?
    Thanks.

Remove items from System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
And  HD > Library > StartupItems
    Then restart your Mac.

  • Macbook pro slow internet after upgrade osx mountain lion

Slow safari after upgrade to osx moutain lion.

Have you reset Safari? Yet?  Top left corner of the screen next to the apple logo click on the word Safari, then click reset safari, make sure everything is checked then click reset.  Also try:
Repair your permissions.  Go to applications then to the "other" folder then go to disk utility, on the left hand side you will see a white box.  Select the second option, usually called "mac HD" with that selected click on "repair permissions" in the center towards the bottom of the screen.  Wait for it to complete, then see if this fixes the issue.

  • Macbook pro not booting after software update

    Dear all,
Since two days ago my macbook pro hangs at the gray apple screen, the round circle keeps on turning. Kept it running for nights but it does not exit this status. I read on the internet that I could run it in verbose mode, that's what I did, see screenshot below. What do you recommend? This seems to be a hard disk issue. How can I boot up in safe mode and possibly recover the hard disk data? Any other recommendations?
    Thanks,

Get your Mac to a Computer repair service, or do it yourself. You will need to put it in an external SATA reader, like I did. I recovered files via an older mac running Slow Leopard and copied files to it.
    What I did:
    1. You will have to remove the screws at the bottom of your Mac, in order to get to the HDD (or SSD, whatever you have).
    2. You need to remove the HDD and put it in an external Case/SATA reader
    3. Copy files from your HDD to another Mac
    4. On that other Mac, go to Disk Utility (search in spotlight) and Erase as 'Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)'
    5. Download Mountain lion on another Mac from the AppStore, and go to that Applications folder.
    6. Right click on the downloaded file and select “Show Package Contents”. Go to “Contents” and jump inside the “SharedSupport” folder and you’ll find a file titled “InstallESD.dmg”. Copy this over to the desktop.
    7. Plug in a USB flash drive to your Mac having at least 4GB memory. We highly suggest going ahead with an 8GB one just to be on the safe side.
    8. Now open up “Disk Utility” and drag InstallESD.dmg from the desktop to the left-hand sidebar. Select the attached USB from left side and click on “Partition” tab.
    9. Select “1 Partition” from the Volume Scheme dropdown menu. Choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” from the left.
    10. Now click on “Option” at the bottom. Select “GUID Partition Table” and press OK. Now click on Apply at the bottom right to start formatting.. (NOTE: This is will erase all data on your USB flash drive)
    11. Once the drive has been formatted, click on “Restore” (it’s right next to where you clicked on “Partition in Step 5).
    12. Choose USB drive you plugged-in in Step 5 as “Destination” with the InstallESD.dmg file as “Source”.
    13. Click Restore and type in your password (if you have any). This will create the intended Lion bootable USB flash drive
    14. Reboot your Mac with the USB drive plugged in. Hold the “Option” key on your keyboard when you hear the iconic OS X startup chime. You can now boot into your Flash drive from there.
    15. Follow the on-screen instructions to install OS X , and after that, reboot
    16. Format USB back to FAT in Disk Utility, copy your files from old PC to new using the USB.
That's it, you're done . Takes a lot of time, but recovered my Mac this way!

  • MacBook Pro Slow Boot / Login?

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded my computer to an SSD (OWC Mercury Electra 6G) using the data doubler, with the SSD in the system drive and my old HDD in the optical bay. I did a fresh install of OS 10.9.5 onto the SSD.
    The Laptop is a 2011 MacBook Pro 15", 2.3gHz with 8gb ram.
All seems good once I'm inside OSX, however it takes a couple of minutes to boot up, as well as freezes on the login screen for around 20 seconds (cannot see key presses in the password field, however they show up later, just lagged).
Any suggestions? The SSD is selected as the boot drive, and I have tried a PRAM reset.
    Thank you!
    Simon

    Hi,
    Definitely try the Combo Updater…
Also have a look at the Install Discs (Grey) that shipped with your MacBook and see which Version of OS X is on them…
According to the information I can find the latest version shipped is 10 6 3…
Just an educated guess… But Your problems could be arising from how your Mac was Updated to 10 6 4
If the Combo Update does not fix your issues then try a Reinstall.
" Insert your Snow Leopard installation disc, then restart while holding down the C key.
When prompted, choose the normal “Install” option.
Make sure to select *“Preserve Users and Network Settings.”*
After installation, you’ll be left with an earlier iteration of Mac OS X 10.6.x but an otherwise largely intact system.
Download the *10 6 6 Combo Update* and apply it…
You may need to restore some saved username/password information, browser information, etc. "…
The above was 'gleaned' from this Link:

    Hope this helps,
    Cheers

  • Retina macbook pro slow boot up and shutdown?

I have a Macbook Pro with retina display (2.6/16/512) and it's just 2 weeks old. When i first got it bootup and shutdown times were pretty awesome (Below 15 seconds for cold bootup and 5 seconds for shutdown). Now after installing many applications (final cut pro, aperture, logic pro, adobe master suite [photoshop, illustrator etc.] and few other apps) my computer seems slow both when booting up (25 seconds) and shutting down (31 seconds), it doesn't seem right to me as the rMBP uses an all flash architecture and is supposed to be fast in booting up and shutting down. Now shutting down took longer than booting up (which is kinda wierd) and sometimes when shutting down the menubar on top is still visible even though the screen had gone to the white image. Can anyone provide any explanations or suggestions to remedy this issue? Thanks in advance.

I am experiencing the same problem - except my Boot time is over a minute!!!  - When I received it I was amazed at the boot time speed in comparison to my old MacBook Pro 17" - I've noticed the machine has become increasingly more sluggish when using certain applications such as Photoshop and  RapidWeaver.
Reinstalling Mountain Lion had no real affect in improving the situation - I do have large Aperture Libraries - and use Creative Suite 5 reguarly.
Would be happy for some advice on what maybe the issue. - I am bit dissapointed at this point - Spending that much money on a machine that I bought for the performance boost and now that has slowed right down isn't sitting right with me.

  • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • 2011 Macbook pro slow boot up

I recently bought a 2011 Macbook pro, and here are the specs.
    2.3 Ghz i7 quad core
    8gb ram
    and 500 gb HDD (7200)
I had restored the laptop and formatted the HDD, and then installed Maverick on it.
The bootup time is about 2-3 minutes before I get to the log in screen.
Also, when I check my system activity, and check the memory being used, it shows that 4 gb is being used...This is just after logging in from a fresh restart. This doesn't seem right to me. I made sure there are not applications to be started after boot up either.
Any advice on what could be the cause of these problems?
    Thanks.

Booting in safe mode is slow because the startup volume is being checked and caches are being deleted. This is not something you should have to do many times in the life of the machine.

  • Macbook Pro cannot boot after Yosemite install

I just (tried) to upgrade to Yosemite (from latest version of Mavericks) on a brand new Macbook Pro. It installed the OS, I got to type my iCloud information etc - and I saw a glimpse of the desktop, but then:
I got the Black screen of death (the one where you can only reboot with text in different languages).
Then, when rebooting I got Apple logo + plus a progress bar  (see attachment)
And then a stop sign. (see attachment)
I have tried holding down power button and restart manually 5 times - no luck. The mac is stuck, and I cannot boot.
Please help - I need to get back to work.

Had the exact same problem on my Macbook Air.  Apple Support had me boot with Command-R and repaired disk in Disk Utility.  Everything seemed fine so they told me to reinstall, which I did.  After a few hours I went back to the screen and it asked me to type in my password. After that is tries to install some more and then I get the following message:
OS X could not be installed on your computer.
This core storage operation is not allowed on a sparse logical volume group.
Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.
Each time I try to reboot I get the same message.

  • My fix for slow boot after Leopard Upgrade

I was having the same issue as a lot of others in posts about extremely slow boot up times after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple Support but in the end I stumbled across a fix for my situation.
After power up and getting to the login screen (about 5-6 seconds), it would take about 3 minutes to fully populate the desktop after entering my password. Most of that time just sitting at the login screen. Extremely painful.
My MacBook connects to a Windows Active Directory network. I was able to fix my slowness by disabling the Active Directory service. I was concerned at first but my bound volumes still work. I don't use a lot of AD services from my Mac so I at this point I have not found any issue with this fix.
To disable, go to Directory Utility, select services and if you have Active Directory enabled, disable it.
My boot time increased from 3 minutes to less than 15 seconds. Better than Tiger.
Tech Support is aware of this issue and has reported it the OS team for a fix.

    Hi-
Do you have a Tiger volume to test your machine with?
Do you still have video in Tiger?
If you don't have a Tiger volume to test on, I would consider such as an important troubleshooting step
So now I am wondering if it is the PCI slot that suddenly stopped working after the OS upgrade. Does anyone know if this is a documented issue and if there is a fix for it?
There are no issues with the AGP slot in relation to an OS version.

  • Can't Install windows on Macbook Pro Early 2011 with SSD upgrade

    Dear all,
A few months ago I had an SSD upgrade and I purchased a Caddy and installed my old HDD on it, and I also changed my Battery because the old one only lasted for 15 inutes after 40 cycles :O
Anyways when I insert a windows 7 or 8 x64 DVD in my USB Samsung DVD Drive, My mac book detects Windows (with the windows 7 DVD) and Detects Windows and EFI Boot (with Windows 8),  I have tried every option of those doesn't work.
With EFI it just boots Mac
With Windows it boots to a screen with one blinking cursor top left and then it ejects the DVD ROM and that it :s
I do not know what is wrong :/
P.S. when i installed the SSD I had windows on the old drive it didn't work after the upgrade (this is what made me link both incidents).

I am willing to try this, but I was kinda trying to find a solution that doesn't need me to unscrew stuff ..etc
