Macbook pro speakers intermittent drop-out

OK, my Macbook Pro 13.3" is less than 3 months old, and the speakers (subwoofer) just drops out occasionally, making it virtually impossible to hear sound. Is this a "known fault" in the hardware -- how to proceed and get this fixed? It's a new Mac...do I have get the shop to take a look, or is there a readier solution? Thanks for any advice.

I've had far too many problems with the newer revisions (>= 5.0) of the Linksys WRT54xx wireless routers, especially dropped connections. A shame, because they used to be extremely reliable. I replaced my WRT54G rev 6 with a D-Link DIR-625 and my connections are much more reliable and stable, both on my Windows and mac machines.

  • MacBook Pro Airport connection drops out

I have a new and really cool MBP.
I have a 2 year old Airport Express connected to a Motorola Cable Modem creating my wireless home net.
I also have a 2 years old iBook G4 with no problem connecting to the airport.
My new MBP has no problem too when is connected to the AC. BUT when I run my MBP from the battery, the connection drops out randomly.
It's annoying and I cannot find any helpfull support or working solution at Apple.com nor at the other similar thread on this forum. I've tried some proposed solutions. But none worked more than some minutes (which mean that actually they didn't work).
I have some questions about all this:
    1) Anybody knows if this is a Hardware or a Software issue?
    2) Apple officially said anything about this problem?
    3) Can I use my purchase warranty in order to demmand a replacement?
    4) Is there any official or unofficial solution that really works?
Please, help. I think it's very stupid to have a nice and really expensive laptop without real wireless capability,
Who want a wireless connection if you aren't able to use it when you are not connected to the AC????
If I was running Vista on Dell or HP laptop I would understand. But on a Mac???
    COME ON APPLE!!!!!
This is the 2nd BIG problem I am facing with my new MBP since I bought it on July. I am frustrated and tired. First I couldn't use Motion 3 for like a month because of a bad update. Now I realize the wireless capability is crap.
I have the feeling that the older Apple Computers are better... at least they work!

I had the same problem on my MacBook Pro for the last month or so after "updating" to 10.4.10. Yesterday I tried Loki's fix but couldn't connect at all after that. So I did an archive/install of 10.4.9 and it works better than ever before. I get full signal and it is a lot snappier and faster. The problem is likely in the 10.4.10 update, hopefully Apple will get that fixed in 10.4.11

  • Macbook Pro crashes intermittently and freeze!!!

I bought my macbook pro 07 august
my macbook pro crashes intermittently, sometimes a a couple of minutes or a few hours. when it crashes, everything freeze and have to press the power button in order to turn it off. tried changing RAM, but it will crash.
Already sent to Apple service centre twice!!!! Run EVERY HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TEST! The technician said my macbook pro is FINE!?
    what's going on?
    I'M REALLY DISAPPOINTED!!!

    Suggest you try the following
    1. Insert Leopard Install DVD
    2. Shut down
    3. Reboot holding down the "C" on your keyboard
    4. Click on "English" (assuming that's your language on the computer)
    5. Find "Dick Utility" on the drop down menu at the top of the screen
    6. Select your drive
    7. Run "Repair Disk" (permission repair can be run from your hard drive without booting to the DVD)
    8. Chances are you're crashing because of an incorrect file/folder count (miss-matched). Disk Utility (from the DVD) will repair this. Continuous freeze-ups are probably from this incorrect count. Unless it's repaired, you'll keep crashing. This repair will keep you running until you figure out the cause. I have a similar problem with sleep/wake. At least this keeps me running for a fair amount of time. I've been trying to figure out the cause (unsuccessfully, as yet).

  • Itunes will not play through my MacBook pro speakers, how do i fix this?

So my itunes wont play throught my macbook pro speakers, is there a way to reset the preferences back to default? The speakers work because I can play youtube videos and hear the click when adjusting the volume.  Thanks for the help!

First check System Preferences/Sound - check all the settings to make sure mute is not selected.
    Repair permissions & restart.

  • Dust and debris in the Macbook Pro speakers

I've noticed that there is a small buildup of dust and debris inside the small holes of my Macbook Pro speakers. Can anyone recommend any ways of cleaning this debris out, such as removing the top cover, or using a suction device? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Either blow out the dirt with a can of compressed air (but not too close), or use a small vacuum cleaner designed for computer use (anti static). I wouldn't remove the top cover unless you are certain you'll put it back exactly as it was so as not to void the warranty.

My MacBook Pro speakers are stopped working and on screen volume icon shows in gray colour I am unable to change the volume.

Go step by step and test.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers.
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
Try this even if you don’t see the red light.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
        Do this twice
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the appropriate method.
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so,uncheck it.
    6. System Preferences > Sound> Sound Effects
        Play sound effects through:
Select "Internal speakers" and then back to "Selected sound output device".

  • MacBook Pro Speakers have a 'start' click. How can I disable it?

    Hello all,
It seems that my MacBook Pro Speakers make a 'start' noise, when they have to 'play' a sound from absolute silence. Why is that? This has become extremely annoying, especially when I get notifications from Adium every now and then. Any workaround on this?
    Thank you in advance.

It is quit possible that one of your speakers has become defective. A had a similar issue with my previous MB, brought it to the Apple Store and the genius determined that i need to replace one of my speakers and sub.
If you are still covered, i would advise you to get it checked out.

  • Macbook pro speakers stopped working, earbuds fine

My macbook pro speakers stopped working, but the earbuds work fine.  Tried restart and preferences.  Volume icon is grayed out, except when earbuds are plugged in.  What am I missing?

Look in the audio output port.  If there is a red light, the internal switch is stuck.  Insert the earphone jack a few times.  Blow into the port as hard as you can.  Use a toothpick or something similar and jiggle it inside the port.  If no success, bring the MBP to the Apple store genius bar.
    Ciao.
If there is no red light, try a PRAM reset:

  • When I am listening to the radio (streaming through itunes) my macbook pro will log me out, quitting all the applications I have running (often firefox, word processing, itunes, etc). Why?

When I am listening to the radio (streaming through itunes) my macbook pro will log me out, quitting all the applications I have running (often firefox, word processing, itunes, etc). Why?
It's very frustrating and I don't understand why it happens. It might happen other times, but I notice it the most when I'm streaming the radio through itunes, though I think it's also happened when I'm streaming music or shows from NPR, so I don't actually know if it's an itunes thing, or an internet thing? Or just my computer being stupid?  But how can I fix it?
    Thanks!

My best guess at this point is a problem wwith 10.5.8
It seems clear to me that sometimes, seemingly randomly, software will access the video card (flash player, quicktime, Safari's HTML5 video player, etc) and it will cause a freeze and then log out.
However - it could just be video card + processor under load.
This didnt happen before 10.5.8 and I'm thinking it's not the new 27" display causing the issue.
I'm going to attempt to find time to revert back to 10.5.0 and then combo update back up to 10.5.7 which may be difficult as our IT is remote and we don't have access to Snow Leopard discs.
I may just have to bring my own in.

  • My 4-year old AirPort Extreme intermittently drops out (no signal to my iMac Book).  The laptop shows reception of other nearby Wi-Fi transmitters, but not mine.  I have changed the bands, but the problem comes back.  Transmitter problem or interference?

My 4-year old AirPort Extreme intermittently drops out (no signal to my iMac Book).  My hard-wired iMac still has internet capability.  The laptop shows reception of other nearby Wi-Fi transmitters, but not mine.  I have changed the bands back and forth, but the problem comes back.  How can I check if it is a transmitter problem or interference?

Let me see if I can suggest a strategy.
I have talked with my ISP and he said that I am not the only one with an Airport Extreme with the same issue. He said to try to write the DNS direclty, rather than using the Auto settings - still nothing works.
What modem do you have and what sort of broadband?
What mode is the AE in.. router or bridge?
I have an Airport Express from 2010. Since about a month and definetly since yesterday, I cannot connect any device via Wifi to it although LAN connection works correctly.
Is this express or extreme.. the rest of the post you refer to extreme.
What is the actual model number of the AE? A1xxx from the base or the part number MCxxx from the box.
If the AE is bridge.. I want you to try a different method.. put it in router mode.. don't worry about double NAT but ensure the IP range of the modem /router is different to the AE.. so if one is 192.168.x.x then the AE on default at 10.x.x.x is fine.. if the main router is 10.x then move the AE to 192.168.x.x
Make sure the guest wireless is off.
Using a 5.6 utility on your 10.6.8 OS mini go to the log and see if the wireless is registering..
You should see lists of wireless connection like..
Post as many screenshots of the setup as you can.. it helps loads.
IPv6 is starting to become a pain.. try it off and try local link and try auto.. in the computer.

  • HT4628 My 20111 macbook pro will intermittently turn its wifi off

    Hello,
My 20111 macbook pro will intermittently turn its wifi off (often when it wakes up or loses signal with a  station).  It then won't turn back on unless I restart the computer.  There are also issues with my screen starting up with a much lower resolution than normal (which reverts about half way through start up to the normal resolution). and every once in awhile a patch of checkers will appear for a few seconds and then disappear.
any ideas?  are these all caused by the same problem?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the Lion recovery partition, if present.

  • Macbook Pro speakers fade in and out, speaker to speaker

I have an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro, using Mac OX Mountain Lion 10.8.3
The last few weeks I have noticed my speakers fading in and out. It does it in various players an browsers (youtube, blip.tv, quicktime, etc.,.) I tried this solution, but I cannot find that plist file anywhere on my computer, even after showing hidden files! I tried doing a PRAM reset, no dice.
Is that plist file suppose to be missing? How can I that plist file on my computer? If I have to go to the genius bar, will they have to charge me, or make me replace the laptop for a 'new' one because I do not have AppleCare?
I have only had this mac for a couple of months, and I haven't gotten any liquids on it, nor have I dropped it! Please help!

    Hi Kate...
This has been happening on different players
    Might be corrupted preferences ...
    Go to  /Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.soundpref.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
The Mac OS X will regenerate a new .plist file for you.

  • MacBook Pro speakers fading in and out

    Hi everyone,
I have had my MacBook Pro for less than a year and usually very happy with it. However, in the last week the speakers have been playing up. When I'm watching a show or movie, at unexplained times, the audio will fade out so it sounds really quiet and sort of far away. This has been happening on different players, such as VLC and Quicktime. It also happens with different files, and at random times.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Oddly enough, it seems that playing a song or two on iTunes fixes it (!?). Does anyone have any other solutions? It's incredibly annoying!
    Cheers,
    Kate
Oh, and the laptop has definitely NOT been around any liquid or anything that could have damaged the speakers, I am very cautious!

  • Hiss in MacBook Pro Speakers

I have a MacBook Pro that has been giving an intermittent quick hiss (1 second or less) throughout the day. Obviously, the sound has to be on for the hiss to happen, but I have not found any pattern to the hissing.
I have sent the MacBook to AppleCare and they have replaced the speakers...twice, but the hiss is still happening after getting it back yesterday.
Does anyone have any ideas about what is causing it or other troubleshooting measures I can do?

I have this exact same problem and it's been driving me crazy for weeks! It's such a short tisk sound of static but is equal to the annoyance of dragging nails down a chalkboard. It will do it intermittently but never ceases to stop.. that is until I read your comment about Outlook. Then I remembered that it hasn't always been making this noise and I only recently installed Outlook. I closed Outlook and didn't hear the sound. I opened Outlook and within seconds after hearing the initial welcome sound, the "tisking" was back. Though I only tested it for 30 seconds before returning to iTunes.. I'm pretty sure Outlook is the problem. It sounds as if it makes the sound every time it checks the server for new mail.. or something of that nature. I can't say it's doing it on all macs because I have a late 2009 MacBook Pro at work and have Outlook open all day. Never heard the sound on it.
Still, a bit of relief that it's not my sound card or something serious. Hope Apple or Microsoft comes out with a fix.. I'm going to assume this is Microsoft's fault, though.

  • MacBook Pro speakers not working.

I was using my (mid-2010) MacBook Pro running Lion and then started watching a video and suddenly the internal speakers stopped working. There was no red light coming from the headphones jack. The volume was not muted. I tried plugging headphones in and even that wasn't working. I can adjust the volume but the speakers or headphones don't work. The headphones are working, I'm certain of that.
    What should I do?

Thanks Dave, but I already figured it out.
I feel like such an idiot for not trying to reboot the computer. *facepalm*
