MacBook Pro Tune Up Cost

I have noticed my MacBook Pro from 2009 has slowed down a bit. I want to get it as close to peak performance as possible before I buy Mountain Lion. I am wondering how much this will set me back at the Apple store.

2009, that means it's three years old out of possible 4 or 5 years depending how well you took care of it.
I'd say spending the money on a SSD is likely not worth it, if you have the RAM maxed out already then that's that.
Perhaps a new hard drive, but usually a backup of data off the machine, a erase and install does wonders.
You can add more RAM and blow out the dust yourself with a can of compressed air with the tube to stick through the fans and out the back of the machine, there is a hidden grill there that catches dust etc. However don't remove the fans if your under AppleCare still (just RAM and hard drive only), that will void it amd don't break anything.

You'll need a tool kit, a catch mat for fallen screws and a pastic compartment container to hold each screw so it goes back into the same exact hole, they can be tiny, different threads and different lenghts as well as being torx and micro phillips head.

  • Macbook pro screen replacing - cost

    Hello, perhaps someone can help...
I need to change my Macbook pro 13" screen but i cannot find the product online. Do they sell just the screen? or i must take the whole computer and leave it there so that they replace it ?
Any idea how much the screen costs?
Thank you very much in advance!!

Best action to take, is to take the computer to the Apple Store and get an estimate from them.
Repair at Apple Store is very expensive. You may have to leave the computer there.
    Best.

  • MacBook Pro for CAD

    Hello All,
I am a Mechanical Engineering student. Most of my classes involve some work with Autodesk Inventor, Solid Edge, and other 3D CAD programs. I currently own a 13" MacBook Unibody(Late 2008, base model). I upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 4GB about a year ago. This still has a relativly small HDD with 160GB(only 65GB used). The specifications of the new base 13" MacBook Pro beat my MB. However, what my MB has that the new one does not, is a dedicated graphics card(256 MB). My parents are pressuring me into buying a new MBP, so that I could give them my current MB, which runs almost flawlessly, even after 5 years of abuse from me.
So my question is: Will graphics intensive programs like Autodesk Inventor and Solid Edge run better on a new base model 13" MacBook Pro with integrated graphics, or my current 13" MacBook Unibody with dedicated graphics?
If I had the money, I would buy the 15" MBP, which has a big graphics card. Sadly, I do not.
Note: Either way, I will be using Bootcamp to install Windows to run 3D CAD. I am not a fan of the Mac versions of these programs. Also, I am looking into replacing the CD/DVD drive with a Data Doubler so I can have two hard drives; one will be an SSD.
    Thank You

Goalie, I could not agree with you more...as an engineer I have had to use many platforms and the PC has always been the absolute bottom of the barrel.  The PCs and Macs do not use the same components, well except to say they both have cpus, memory, storage, graphics controlers, etc.  The Mac parts are much higher level.  A few years ago I was forced to buy a Dell latptop for work-related stuff...to outfit that with the same level of performance components as were standard on the MacBook Pro would have cost more than the MBP...just not the same.
Ok so much for that.  Even though you say you do not have the funds for a 15", dokeep in mind that the 15" comes with both the standard Intel HD 4000 GPU and a discrete GPU so high-end graphics work will be rendered far better than you will get on the 13" model.  Plus you can upgrade the memory significantly yourself on the 15" model.  Plus, another plus, it comes standard with more mass storage and options for solid state instead of hard drive.
Since you don't say what year you are in, I will assume your last two years from your high level statements of courses, you will need higher capabilities in senior-level, and especially graduate-level, courses.  The added capabilities of the 15" will payoff in the long run.
As for dual-boot use, the larger capacity mass storage will be important if you intend to use the Mac OS X partition for extensive work and data.  So add that to the list of considerations.
Be sure to look into student discounts as Apple often has those available.

  • MacBook Pro and Adobe CS5 graphics card upgrade

I have a few questions that I can't seem to get answers to from Adobe. I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.8 with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR2 SDRam, and GeForce 8600M GT graphics card. I currently have Adobe CS3 on it, but would like to upgrade to CS5. I know that I'll need to upgrade to Snow Leopard, but I believe I'll need to upgrade my graphics card also. According to Adobe's site, the compatible cards listed are the Nvidia quadro fx ones. the one they suggest is for a macbook pro, however, and costs about $1500. I'm trying to find out if I can even upgrade the graphics card on my MacBook, and if so is there anything that costs about a tenth of that price. CS5 specs can be found here http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/mastercollection/systemreqs/
My MacBook also has the dual boot (windows and Mac). I have never booted in Windows and have a windows laptop, so I'm wondering if it would be better to get rid of that, so that CS5 would run better when installed. any ideas/suggestions?

"... I know that I'll need to upgrade to Snow Leopard, but I believe I'll need to upgrade my graphics card also."
Why do you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard?
The graphics card is not upgradeable.
I would query the forum for users of CS5 and Leopard with your hardware configuration and see if they have any problems.

  • I wanna buy a 13" MacBook Pro, but I'm not sure..?

Reasons in converting from PC to Mac:
-- Well, for one..I've always wanted a Mac, any Apple product really, but they're so expensive.
-- I love the customer support. You get One-on-One help with a MacGenius at any Apple Store (which are basically in every city) instead of doing the push-button waiting for an "agent" to help me on the phone.
-- The sleek designs are very sexy lol. and with almost every Mac Desktop or laptop, you have a built-in web cam.
-- Updates in software are always available and are so easy to update.
-- Apple Technology makes me feel so "technical" lol with all the high-end software and stuff.
-- I want the MacBook to be my laptop for life. Using it daily.
-- Sometimes, I wanna make some video montages with my HD Cam.
-- Have it be a place to store my digital photos.
-- I'm a huge music person. i need room for my 2,000+ songs on iTunes.
but I don't wanna seem like I'm only buying the MacBook Pro just for it's looks. I don't even know how to choose one. For example, what's the diff between 2.23 and 2.56GHz? What kind is a "1066MHz frontside bus. 3MB shared L2 cache" processor? What does it mean to have "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory" for graphics? Is a "1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM" good? Should I upgrade to the 8GB memory instead of the retail 2GB or 4GB?

I will state upfront I am a current Windows user and while I'm interested in purchasing a Mac - I'm struggling with justifying the added cost. I stumbled on this thread hoping to get more clarity and information about what I'm missing by staying with Windows.
I see JE13's post and I can't help but ask a few questions - after reading this post, perhaps a Mac just isn't geared for me?
    JE13 wrote:
First, they last longer than most other laptops. I still see "Clamshell" Macs in use which are eleven years old! If you buy a Mac Laptop, you can expect to use it for a good 4-5 years before you might feel the need to get another. So cut the cost in half because you're saving having to buy a new laptop in two years. Then consider that they retain their resale value. You can actually sell the old Pro and get some money for it toward a new one. So, you save money that way.
I have a 6 year old Windows desktop that works fine so I'm not forced into buying a new one. I'm just interested in some of the new technology (HDMI, webcam, bluetooth, SATA, etc).
This reasoning around why a Mac costs me less doesn't resonate with me.
    JE13 wrote:
Next, you won't have to buy virus protection. So you save money that way, and you won't have to buy a lot of software that you often have to buy with PCs because Mac comes with almost all the software you need bundled in. That includes photo, video and music software. You can also run the PC programs you have on the Mac if you wish. So you have two-in-one computers. So, again, you've saved money. As you can see, if you were to add all these things together, you might well find that the Mac was a much better deal than even dirt cheap laptops, because dirt cheap laptops are no-frills laptops--they seem cheap, but after you've bought all the stuff you need for them, you've spent almost as much as you might have on a fully equipped Apple. And you get even more with the Apple then just the extras you'd have to buy if you went cheap.
If I was to buy a Windows laptop today, I leverage free A/V software (AVG) and it comes with MS Office suite. If I was to purchase a Mac, is there additional costs associated with purchasing MS Office?
This reasoning around why a Mac costs me less doesn't resonate with me (kinda sounds like it will cost more?).
    JE13 wrote:
As you said, you've got great customer support and 1 year warranty (unless you buy Apple care which gives you 3 years, and constant phone support). Again, you save money because problems will get fixed without incurring repair costs (obviously, if you spill coffee on the machine, all bets are off). There's also an element here of you-get-what-you-pay-for, which means that you'll get good quality screen, aluminum body, built-in camera, illuminated keyboard, sound system, long-life battery, even the plug which pops out if you pull it so you don't bring the computer crashing to the floor. So while the computer may be pricy, you are getting your money's worth.
Don't Windows laptops comes with a 1-year warranty, too? Granted, I can pay for extended support just like I can with a Mac, too.
Aside from the plug that pops out if you pull it and the aluminum body, the other specifications come with a Windows laptop, too.
This reasoning around why a Mac costs me less doesn't resonate with me.
    JE13 wrote:
And yes, the Macbook is very good for using daily. I recently had to remind a new Macbook user that she need never turn off the computer or quit programs. She only need close the lid and go. Open the lid and start up again. This is where you'll save the most money. You'll be more productive, get more done and that, again, saves you money. In short, by and large, Mac Laptops are good investments.
Don't Windows laptops have the same features? My work laptop that runs windows does this and while I can't close the lid on my desktop (haha), I can set it to hibernate and it will come back on with my programs, too.
This reasoning around why a Mac costs me less doesn't resonate with me.
    JE13 wrote:
You don't have to get the most expensive machine, either. 2.23GHz is fine for you, as is 256MB. You will probably want 4-8GB RAM (memory) as that keeps things speedy and allows you to have a lot of programs running. Videos and music do take up room on a laptop and that should inform you as to how many MG of harddrive you might need. Better to have, as recommended, a back-up drive for finished videos. That will keep them from taking up room on the laptop. You may also be able to find refurbished pros and used pros at a discount if you still don't want to pay full price.
The specifications I would be buying will cost me more, but be less then that of what I would see on a Windows machine.
This reasoning around why a Mac costs me less doesn't resonate with me.
Does this help you with your decision?
Not really. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, I'm still not certain how to justify buying a MacBook Pro which will cost me nearly double the amount of money to do the same thinks a Windows laptop can do.
What am I missing? The Mac laptops are very nice, but I can't logically conclude I should buy one since I can't grasp what I'm getting for the extra money.

  • MacBook Pro 15 vs. iMac 27

In a year, I'll be going to college, pursuing a computer science degree. I am currently using a Windows desktop computer (which I hate, that's why I want a Mac). I like desktops and I like laptops. If I bought a MacBook Pro, it would cost me 2,094.00$ and here are the specs:
    2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x2GB
    750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
(I'd bump up the RAM to 8GB on my own.)
And if I bought an iMac for 2,079.00$:
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB GDDR5
(I'd bump up the RAM to 8GB on my own, here too.)
I am really torn between the iMac and MacBook Pro, portability COULD help, but I don't mind about it. While taking into account that I'll be programming a lot and often playing around on my Mac, which one would be the most appropriate?
Thanks a lot in advance and sorry if I wasn't clear or structured...

With two of my own recently graduating college and grad school, both used mac laptops, and the portability was something that allowed them to take their computers with them and work in many places, whether the library, visiting a friend, home over vacation, etc.
If you do go 15" MBP, I'd recommend the build-to-order matte/anti-reflective screen, as glass reflections are more difficult to control with a portable than with an iMac desktop system.  Also, recommend Applecare on portables, which gives a total of 3 years warranty coverage as well as telephone support during that time. As a student you can get that at a reduced rate too.

  • What should i get a macbook pro or air, what should i get a macbook pro or air

    macbook air

I depends on you plan to use it for, your budget and other personal considerations.  Both are good buys.  Do you want the 13” MacBook Air higher portability, less weight and longer battery life (12 hours) at a lower cost ($1400 for 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD) or a 15” MacBook Pro with higher cost, 75% of the battery life and 1.5 times the weight ($2000 with a similar memory and storage configuration)?
For most people 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM is sufficient and even though I don’t need it now I would purchase an 8 GB model because it only costs $100 more and as applications continue to use more memory it could help.  I would definitely purchase 256 GB or more of SSD.
Personally I use an older 13” MBA with 4 GB of memory and 256 GB of SSD and that suites me well.  When I had a 128 GB MBA it was too small.  My files fit comfortably in 256 GB but then I only have about 40 GB of music and not many pictures and movies.  Both the MBA and MBP can be configured with 512 GB of SSD if you need that much storage.  I use my MBA with a 24” monitor and external keyboard and mouse on my work desk so I have a lot of screen space except when I am carrying it around.
    Your needs may differ.

    More details:
    http://www.apple.com/macbook-air/specs.html
If the 13” MacBook Air has enough screen space for you then it would cost less, be more portable (3 pounds), and have a longer battery life.  The high-end version with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB of SSD costs $1,400.  The low end with 11” model costs $400 less but has a smaller screen, half the memory and half the SSD (128 GB).  Many people with 128 GB SSDs wish they had the larger 256 GB model so think carefully before choosing the smaller SSD size.  The MBA is rated as having 12 hours of battery life.  It can be configured with 512 GB of SSD.
    http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/
The MacBook Pro can have more computing power and a 13” or 15” screens.  A similarly configured 13” MBP (8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, 3.5 pounds) costs $1500 and uses the same processor as the MBA.  A 15” MBP with the same configuration costs $2,000 and weighs 4.5 pounds and has a faster processor.  So you pay a lot for the larger screen.  The MBP is rated as having 9 hours of battery life and weighs more.  It can be configured with 512 GB of SSD (or even 1 TB for $$$) and up to 16 GB of memory.

  • MacBook Pro MD103D/A or MacBook Pro MD104D/A

    Hi all
I want to buy my first MacBook Pro and I don't know exactly which one of these 2 is better for my requirements. I want to use the laptop for internet, Office, some games, television. I don't to any photoshopping and I don't think that I'll do it in the future. My photos stay as they are.
What is important for me is, that I can use the laptop for many years. The one I use now (no Apple) is 4 years old and often unable to cope with different programs at the same time and unfortunately very loud. This time I'd like to use it longer as Apple is quite expensive.
What I'd like to know is, is there a difference between 2,3 GHz and 2,6 GHz? If I buy the 2,6 GHz, will it be better for future needs/programs as I can't upgrade it?
MacBook Pro MD103D/A costs 1.600 Euro or 1.700 Euro including Outlook. MacBook Pro MD104D/A including Outlook costs 1.900 Euro.
Is it worth to buy the more expensive one? Outlook is nice to have but not essential.
    Thanks for your advice
    Kind regards
    Suse

  • I recently managed to get the whole casing of my 13" Macbook Pro (Mid-2009) replaced due to a missing foot and dodgy spacebar. The lid is dented and scratched so would like to know how much it would cost to replace? I know its not covered by AppleCare.

So i took my Macbook Pro 13'' (Mid-2009) into Apple because the spacebar was jammed and I had one of the feet of the bottom casing missing which was unusual (black circles). The unibody and bottom plate had a fair few dents and nicks and under AppleCare I was able to get the whole unibody and bottom case fixed for free. Saved myself a good £181!
This now leaves my lid which has one or two noticeable dents and the bottom right part is suffering from several scratches. I was wondering how much a new lid would cost if I took it into Apple? I know it won't be covered under AppleCare as its accidental damage but want to know whether its worth paying for to have a once again dent free Macbook Pro .
As a side note, do Apple upgrade your hardware at all, such as the hard drive or memory? I know it would be cheaper to do it at an independant computer shop or by myself but would like to explore my options first.

  • My 2011 MacBook Pro does not start and stop after the apple appear, they said that the problem is a video problem and need to change the logic board. Cost almost same to buy a new one. Somebody have the same problem?

I have a MacBook Pro early 2011. Does not start. After the apple show, a blank screen appear. The service said that the problem is with the video plaquue in the logic board. Need to change. Cost lmmost the same than a new MacBook Pro. Somebody has the same problem? What we can do?

I hate to break this to you, but life isn't fair. If your job is that critically in need of a computer, then you should have a spare to use for just this kind of situation or have your employer provide you with a computer to use.
Computers break down, just like cars. If your car breaks down do you curse the car maker or get it fixed? Surely, you paid more for your car than the computer.
This is reality. Best get used to it because it won't get any better.

  • Where can I get some feet for my 15" Macbook Pro (mid 2009) without the cost of A$200

I am loosing my mind. Can anuone please help?
I have a 15" mid 2009 Macbook Pro, that I love. It is my 6th Apple computer so it's not like I haven't contributed to the Apple estate.
I use it for work and study so it pretty much runns continuously and has since its purchase in 2009. So, as you can imagine wear and tear are starting to show.
3 of the 4 feet have come off and this is making me crazy. It does not ventilate properly and doesn't sit well on the desk. I have attempted to buy all manner of feet to fit it, but nothing works.
So, I took it to my local Apple store a while ago in search of some replacement feet for it. Because, Apple have to inspect all repair jobs.
I cannot buy, the feet alone, I must buy the complete bottom housing for it at the cost of A$199.00 (WHAT!!!, I HEAR YOU SAY!!!, and that is pretty much exactly what I said when I was told this by my apple genius (and yes, I did say Genius with a sarcastic tone), but certainly the thoughts that ran through my mind were far stronger).
So, in my eternal search to make my perfectly working but incredibly annoying, beloved macbook pro be as good as ever, I have been to 2 "apple" dealers in the hope to buy this product at a cheaper price. Because, 1. I don't want the base, only the feet and 2. I don't want to pay 200 bucks for it.
Anyway. the first purchase I made was through some dodgy chinese website. Apparently, there is no one at the other end, because all corespondense was ignored. But I did get my money back.
But the second has really done my head in. www.applecomponents.com had advertised the part at $US69. So, I purchased and paid with paypal and all was well with the world. But, This morning I recieved the following email. And this is the entirity of the message from a business with obviously no customer service skill, not address, no phone number. Just a rude individual at the end of the email.
Remember, this was the whole email...
"so it's looking like this part was in the wrong bin. we don't actually have one. we can get new, but it would cost around $150.
    please advise?"
***? (and I am really holding back bolding that text and setting the font size to 68).
In Australia, if a product is advertised at a price, that is what we pay for it.
So, I re-check the website and the price has increase $100 but, it still says "in stock".
Right about now, I am starting to get quite frustrated, with this faceless nameless person/company/shonk.
I get in touch with some consumer experts and reply and I recieve the following reponse...
"it was an honest mistake. we have a lot parts. we haven't sold one of these bottom cases for over 6 months. whoever labeled em' did it wrong. I don't have the part, but I have access to ordering it new with my vendor - hence the price change.
feel free to call me anytime and we can talk it out.
    thanks
    phillip
    503-806-6423"
(not really sure where this phone number resides so the 10 digits are useless)
Now, Phillip is not the person I made the payment to. The payment was made to Alex Kraft.
Who, After I demanded the product. Has just refunded my money and dissapeard off the planet.
I am sick and tired of these shonks and it is now my mission to stop these people from trading.
Sorry for my digression but, I feel, all should be aware of these people. Scammers.
But, if anyone knows where I can get some feet from someone who will bloddy supply them at a price that is reasonable.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks

your situation is not new.  Others have been told by Apple that they have to purchase the entire bottom panel in order to replace the feet.  There are engineering solutions that can solve this problem, but to pay nearly $200 to replace a part that costs less than $1 (I am being very, very conservative) to manufacture is too excessive.
I have had the feet come off as well.  Fortunately for me, I have not lost them and have been able to replace them.  Why they cannot sell them individually is a puzzle to me.  Perhaps some bean counter at Apple feels its too much effort to have these items individually  in their inventory.  I have had nothing but good comments to say about Apple, but sadly this is an exception.
To address your problem, I have seen second hand ones advertised on Ebay.  The price was a bit steep, $10 as I remember.  Other wise, wjosten's suggestion is the only alternative.
    Ciao

  • How much does upgrading my macbook pro cost?

I got a '13-inch dual core Intel core i5' macbook pro as a gift, and I haven't opened the box yet. I need to upgrade it to a '2.2GHz quad-core  Intel Core i7'. Is it possible? How much will it cost?

    Let us be fair.
    A bunch of arrogant upstarts:
Crossed the ocean in 60 ft ships
Begged mother England for help surviving even the first winters
Accepted the British army's help in fighting French and Indian War
Protested taxes, but refused to send our legally allowed representative to Parliament
    Broke away
We do not have *that* much room to complain.
Sorry ... I am a student of history, even if I miss the complete picture sometimes.

  • On my Macbook pro there are about 200 tunes that I am not able to play that I downloaded from my 1100 tunes on my old mac lap top and why?

I downloaded about 1100 tunes from my old Macbook via fire wire onto my new (at the time) MacBook Pro, I am able to play about 900 tunes however, the other 200 it asks for me to get authorization and these also are from the Itunes store and everytime I give it the passwork it does not honor it, what is the problem ?

Not really, I had changed the password however, but the account name was the same, thanks

  • Recently got a new iPod 4th gen; I had previously backed up to iCloud and subscribed to iTunes Match, and then wound up syncing the new iPod to my MacBook Pro; all iCloud tunes were downloaded to Mac but won't all sync to the iPod - any suggestions?

Recently got a new iPod Touch 4th gen; I had previously backed up to iCloud and subscribed to iTunes Match, and then wound up syncing the new iPod to my MacBook Pro; all iCloud tunes were downloaded to Mac but won't all sync to the iPod after multiple attempts, despite all songs showing properly on the Mac and multiple syncs occurring after all songs were properly reflected on the Mac.  I updated iTunes Match from the iTunes Store menu as well pre-sync.
I should mention that I had previously had the library on a Dell (which is still running) and shared it on my home network.  While all iTunes purchases now show in the Dell, the Mac is the device I use for all syncs.
There appears to be no rhyme or reason to the iCloud physical sync failure - some songs were legacy, some were purchased via the PC, some on the old iPod.
The Mac shows all the songs correctly and none show iCloud status -all have been downloaded, but the downloaded songs that were previously showing up as iCloud based aren't syncing to the iPod.
Is there any way to force all music being seen by my iPod as iCloud to download to so I can listen to them offline?  Is there a way to force the sync from iTunes?

The "system" performed as designed. All devices syncing to one iCloud account are kept in common sync. The idea is that all such devices belong to one user. Different users should have different iCloud accounts.  Once your contacts were edited, all devices were updated as well and subsequent backups (from yours and her device) reflected the changed contacts (and any other data that may have been edited like calendars). Your first task is to change your daughter over to a new account before she makes other changes.
The only way I see for getting back contacts is to restore them from a time machine backup, assuming you also have a Mac included in the account which syncs the contacts. However, I'm not sure whether time machine includes contacts from iCloud along with those that are local, "on my Mac".
Otherwise the deleted contacts are gone.
