MacBook Pro wakes up when unplugging usb from cinema display

Hi all,
I have a 30" cinema display at work and a 23" at home which I use with my macbook pro. At work, I use a usb keyboard which stays plugged into the monitor. At home, I have a wireless keyboard and a usb printer plugged into the monitor. Thus in both cases, I plug the usb cable from the display into my laptop. I typically leave the MBP open so as to have the main display and the cinema display at the same time. When I leave home or work, I close to MBP to put it to sleep. However, upon unplugging the display and especially its usb cable, the laptop invariably wakes up, which is annoying.
I tried leaving the MPB closed and putting it to sleep with the display's on/off button. Same behavior.
Is there a setting to prevent usb 'signals' from waking up the computer? Should I proceed differently?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I know this question is answered, but I didn't want to create another thread to discuss the same topic.
I think this issue is rooted in the Cinema Display being attached to port 3 of it's own internal hub. This is to allow the display dimming, the power button that controls the sleep/wake of the laptop, etc. I just got my 30" cinema display a week or two ago, and before that was using an HP IPS LCD panel (24") that also had an integrated USB hub. I have the same devices attached too --USB hard drive for time machine, and keyboard (mighty mouse plugged in to keyboard). When unplugging the cable to the HP monitor's hub, the macbook would not wake up. Just with the Apple display.
The problem with the hack/bandaid/workaround suggested is that to unplug the USB cable before sleeping the laptop, I need to open disk utility and eject the external drive first, else the system will complain. When the laptop goes to sleep, it runs a script (that I wrote) to eject the drive before sleeping, thus no error messages.
Apple really needs to work on making "docking" work right. Until then, I'm using a Belkin USB hub which doesn't wake up the mac when unplugging it.

  • MacBook Pro turns off when unplugged from outlet

I have a MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo 2.26GHz
2 days ago when I unplugged it from the wall it shut off. It has been doing this since even though the battery is fully charged.
Once it is off I am able to turn it back on not plugged in and use it for the full length of the battery without problem.
Anyone would know what would cause this? and how to fix it?
    Thx

I would try the SMC reset.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro wake up when (un)plugged in?

This has only just started to happen.
When my MacBook Pro is asleep, if I plug it in or unplug it, it will wake up.
    How can I sort this?
    Thank you.

Most likely a Flash issue. Try uninstalling then reinstalling your current copy of the Flash plugin.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down when unplugged

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro work computer. Here's the sequence of events:
    I fully charge the battery
I unplug the Mac from the power cable
    The Mac immediately shuts down
Before unplugging the Mac, I press the battery power indicator button and all lights are green. When I unplug the Mac I press the indicator button again and only one light is green.
I've tried resetting the PRAM, SMC and even bought a new battery but the problem persists. Here is the System Information.
How can I get my MacBook Pro to stay powered on when not plugged in?

System Profiler shows you have 195 cycles on this batt and says "Service Battery" so I'm not sure if that's the old batt or you bought a used one, but either way, it looks like that batt is nearly dead. If you have a new/different batt, install it, give it a full charge, and post System Profiler info for that one.
Also, have you tried  different power adapter and/or tried your power adapter on a different MBP?

  • Macbook Pro shutting off when unplugged and at 80% battery? help!

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 15 in. that i got in May of 2011. When i unplug the power adapter it works fine, but at about 80% battery it shuts off. i go to turn it back on and it acts as if it is dead, i press the power button again and it turns on without problem (although the date and time at first is messed up). What is wrong? I recently had to get my hard drive replaced 2 months ago and it has been working fine until yesterday. What could be wrong and how do i fix it?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. Back up all data before you go.

  • MacBook Pro Wakes Up When Hood Is Down

If you have any peripherals connected to your computer, disconnect them. If your issue disappears, one of the peripherals is the culprit.

  • Plugging USB from cinema display to dual-link DVI adapter shuts-off adapter

i have a macbookpro and 30" cinema display. i had been using the $100 minidisplayport-to-duallinkDVI adapter to connect my monitor but now whenever i plug the USB from the monitor into the adapter (to use the monitor as a USB hub) it  kills the power to the monitor! does anyone know what the problem is here? it seems to have gotten worse and worse over time and now i cannot ever get it to work no matter how many times i replug things... causing my studio to be quite disconnected. does anyone have any information on this issue?

There just so much power that can be delivered to the usb buss.  You probably need a powered usb hub.

  • MacBook Pro thunderbolt show flickering with 24-inch Cinema Display

    Hello,
I see other people are having this problem of the cinema display flickering and going completly black for a couple of seconds.
Is this on Apple's radar?  Is there a fix pending?
From what I can tell the problem was first reported 7 weeks ago.
    thx
    Lach

I am having the same issue.  My screen will flicker at a steady pace about once every 3 to 5 seconds, the flicker its self is maybe half a second long tops.
Needless to say this is completely annoying!  Was not a problem until today, I thought I was lucky to have avoided the horror stories of Thunderbolt display problems.  This is another thing I can add to my growing list of annoyances with a $2400 computer.  It is sad really.  I can hook up an Asus netbook to my 1080p display with no problems but somehow one of the fastest laptops available has issues being hooked up to an external monitor.
I want to love my MacBook but unfortunately it has been annoyance after inconvenience after just plain silliness with this computer.
    Please fix this Apple.
The monitor I use is a 23" Samsung 1080p display through a Thunderbolt to DVI connection.

  • 11" Macbook Air Hanging Wifi when attached to 27" Cinema Display

For the last week I've been encountering the problem: I've replaced my wireless router with the new Extreme, I've changed the channels on that router. I've deleted my locations file in my network prefs and established fresh locations. All my software is up-to-date. My other devices (iPhone 5, PCs, iMac, etc.) are downloading and uploading things smoothly. It is only the air that essentially just takes 30 seconds to connect to servers and then it eventually does. It's not my browser caches--it is system-wide (Unenet, FTP, etc.). I've noted the problem the most when the air is attached to my 27" Apple Cinema Display. I've used different routers and the problem still exists. The genius looked at me funnily when I took it in and she suggested that I just delete my location files in the Network Pref. I can't tell you how many times I've done this. And it works for 60 seconds, then I monitor it closely and the wifi automatically slows again. Help!

    Anybody?

  • MacBook Pro shuts off when unplugged.

For the past week my MacBook charger has been not functioning correctly. It only charged my computer when it was the the right position. I figured there was a short in the wires and was just going to pick up a new one. Last night however, the charger stopped working completely. I tried moving it around for about an hour until i just gave up and figured there was no hope. As soon as i shut the MacBook though, the charger light came on, but again when i moved the wire too much, it turned off. As soon as the charger light turned off, so did my MacBook. And i thought it was weird since there was still about 20% battery life, and it turned back on fine, but the date got reset to the year 2000 and it made me put in my wifi info again, which has never happened. I shrugged it off and really didnt think much of it though until it happened again today. This afternoon i plugged my Macbook in and it was and the charger was working fine after i found the right position to put it in. I let it charge for a few hours while i was out, and when i got home i used my Macbook for about two hours before i decided to move the Mac, causing my charger to move and stop working. And my MacBook imediately shut off again, exactly how it did the night before. What is causing my Mac to do this? How do i fix it? Its about 2 years old and this is the first time anything like this has happened to it! Please help me, I'm not good with computers at all so i have no idea what to do. By the way i dont think its the battery since when i turn it back on it runs just fine without being plugged in. It only turns off when it has been charging and then stops.

Borrow a friend's MagSafe Charger or try with the ones in the Apple Store. Sorry I wasn't clear from your post if you purchased a new charger yet.
Also clean the contacts on the MagSafe port and the charger side.
    Apple recommends:
"Remove debris gently with a cotton swab or a soft bristle toothbrush, which provide the strength, flexibility, and precision for this task. Be careful not to get any cotton fibers stuck in the pin receptacle. You may use isopropyl alcohol to aid in cleaning the connectors as well. Be sure the connectors are dry before using the computer or adapter after cleaning."

  • My MacBook Pro shuts down when unplugged, even though fully charged. why?

  • No synchronisation between MacBook Pro 15" Retina and Apple LED Thunderbolt Cinema Display 27"

If I start my Retina MacBook with connected Apple 27" Monitor via Thunderbolt, I can notice less a second a blue Screen on both devices and then both Displays become black, since I installed Mountain Lion (10.8.2); the time before (Lion 10.7), the synchronisation was ok and everything is okay with my 13"-Apple AirBook (Lion 10.7) also.
Now, when this happens and I  move down the Display of my 15" MacBook Retina, I can see everthing on the 27" monitor. With an extern mouse, I can work quite well (without the MacBook-keyboard, because the Display is closed). I didn't try an extern keyboard till now. I only can move the pointer of the ext. mouse visible on both screens.
When I connect a further monitor via HDMI to my MacBook Retina, everthing is okay and I can watch 3 Displays !!!
When I turn off (the third still HDMI-connected Monitor), I can continue working with 2 Displays - Mac Book and 27"-Apple monitor, everthing is ok.
If I disconnect the 27" Monitor, I can continue on the MacBook without a problem. If I connect the Apple-Monitor via Thunderbolt again, the Problem comes again.
Why I can't  find a synchronisation between my 15" MacBook Retina (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) and my Apple 27" Monitor (baught in August 2012)????

Hey, thanks 4 your response... Well I figured that out... I hoped that there was a way to prevent system calls, regarding devices, to wake up my macbook pro... something like: forbid interrupts while asleep
If you ever hear of a way to fix it please let me know...
I think a solution would be to disable automount on the express card device... I use it for my time machine backup and really DON'T want to remove the card every five minutes...
    Cheers, Philipp

  • When my macbook pro wakes from sleep the curser is not there, no keys work and the screen is frozen so i have to reboot it

Sometimes when my macbook pro wakes from sleep the curser has disappeared, the screen is frozen and no keys work. I have to reboot.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
