MacBook pro white screen on startup

Alright so I was using my mbp perfectly fine for about three years and not once have I had any issues other than to do with the charger. It always worked like new and was never slow. I came back from school today and when I opened it up (I usually have it on sleep) it gave me the spinning wheel and it pretty much froze. I then had no option other than a force shut down since I waited for so long. I read around on the forums and people told me to reset my smc/pram which I did do and nothing really changed. After a while I started getting the flashing fold icon so I decided to boot from the mac osx installation disc. When I did that and went to disk utility to repair my drive my hard drive was not shown as an option, so I just went outside and relaxed with some friends and after I came back home I booted up my mac and it surprisingly booted up perfectly but then again it had the spinning wheel but this time my mac did not freeze but was really slow so then I tried to reinstall osx and I select my hard drive and it was almost done but the time remaining said -1 minutes remaining after it had finished. So I again had to force shut down. I tried to boot from my intallation disc again to see if I can repair my drive but this time I heard nothing but the cd spinning for a bit then the clicking sound and eventually the disc automatically ejects and I am greeted with the folder icon. I opened up my MacBook and took out the hard drive and plugged it back in and then it worked but had the spinning wheel and no way was I going to live with that so I force shut down my Mac and ever since then I can't boot from cd at all. However when I do turn on my mac and put my hand on my hard drive I can fell it working. What is the problem here? Is it a hard drive failure? Is it a logic board failure? Is it the cable connecting the hard drive to the logic board that is failing?( highly doubt that since it doesn't even boot off cd)
Thanks guys in advance and I know it is a long read but I would really appreciate some help.

Anyone?

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro White Screen of Death?

    Hi all,
I have a Mid- 2010 Macbook Pro, running 10.8.2 that, when booting, sounds the Startup Chime but no Apple logo appears, just a white screen.  I'm in IT so I've done several things, but nothing has worked and I couldn't find a previous discussion that was similar to mine.
Here's what I've done so far:
    - Changed hard drives
    - reseated RAM
    - Unplugged Battery
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Tried to boot from CD using CTRL- C
    - Tried Recovery boot using CTRL- R
Anything else I could try?  I keep thinking it may have something to do with the Time Change, but that seems a little weird to me if that's the cause.  It worked fine late last night and then it did this in the morning (after the time change).
Thanks for any help you can give!

    Hi sanjampet,
Tried the SMC reset, safe boot, CD boot, and Recovery boot all with no luck.  Not sure why it's going on, but it's looking more and more like a hardware issue to me.  It's a white screen (instead of a grey screen), so I'm worried that it's something with it.  I'm going to try and see if I can remote into it using Screen Sharing to see if it's something with the display.
My wife used it last and she told me that it was slow on the internet with the mouse freezing up, so she held down the power to turn it off then it came up with the white screen which hasn't come back on since.  I'm using an 3rd party SSD hard drive and replaced it with another SATA hard drive, but it didn't help.
    Thanks,
    JN

    askmeplz82,
if you’re unable to boot into Mountain Lion’s Recovery mode, then that limits your self-help options. These options still remain:
Do you still have the two grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro?
Do you have a bootable external disk?
Do you have access to a FireWire cable and access to a second Mac with a FireWire port?
Do you have a spare SATA disk which can be temporarily installed inside of your MacBook Pro?
If the answer to all of these is no, then your only remaining option is to make an appointment at an Apple store or other qualified service facility so that they can diagnose/repair your MacBook Pro.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro white screen after apple logo and spinning wheel

    Hey there guys,
My 2011 Macbook Pro has encountered some problems. Firstly while i was at school, i opened up my computer, usually the computer would require you to type your password, but my login page became fuzzy, white lines everywhere. So I restarted my computer and everything was okay. After that i came back home, my computer was running fine, after surfing the net for a few hours, my whole computer suddenly became blue. So what i did was i just restarted my computer, after that my computer would boot up Apple logo would come up, the spinning wheel would also come up, after 30-40 secs it would turn black screen and come back on as a white screen and would just stay like that. It would be on the white screen. Tried some rebooting ways but all didn't work.
1st: I wanna know whats the problem?
2nd: Is this a harddrive failure? (Because i have alot of important documents and personal stuff in my hard drive and i hope it isn't a crashed hardrive)
    Thanks for your help..
PS: Im running on Moutain Lion, but i have no idea what version it is.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • MacBook Pro White Screen

My MacBook Pro has decided to throw a right wobbler, or in other words it has PMT.
I left it in stanby last night closed up came to it this morning and the thing had a totally dead battery and when recharged refused to boot up (was hangning on a white screen).  I can't get back to the main install disc until tomorrow so decided to leave it until then, but at about 8 this evening (BST) it just sprang back to life and fully booted and loaded everything without an issue.  Anyway long story short it has crashed again whilst doing absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing no apps running or anything.
The system is shut down and if it tries to load I get the chime drive check and a white screen, can anyone help out or is this thing toast after just under two years?  Never had a problem with it before and it is kept right up to date and doesn't have loads of apps, was recently updated as well.  Runs Snow Leopard with no bootcamp and is a 13" i3 macbook

Have performed every single operation going, including replacing the hard drive and ram modules back to factory standard, nothing.  Will boot using an install disc to load it as an installation, but it is not finding a HDD at all, which to me suggests a fried Logic Board.  What really annnoys me the most is that I had litterally only performed an apple update on it less than twenty four hours before it was fried, I am now seriously concerned that the same thing is going to happen to my iMac which had an update at the same time.
As it stands it is not worth replacing the logic board as this 'failure' has already cost me work so I don't have the cash to pay for that. It should nto fail within two years and the things is now seriously overheating so I think that maybe apple need to look at the contents of their update packages, I can't loose that amount of data for fun when my job depends on it.Thank you ds store for you help, I pretty much knew how to do everyting on that list anyway, but it is handy for those that can't.
My solution - porbably going back to windows again, just like I did in the 90's when the tech started getting volatile

  • Macbook Pro white screen on RESTART only

I have MBP Early 2011 model i7 with dedicated graphics.
I had been running OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard until last week, which I know is completely outdated but I was forced to keep it due to FCP7 compatibility.
Anyway, finally I installed Yosemite (fresh install) and all worked out okay. But whenever I restart the machine it will hang on white screen after the apple logo appears. Then when I shut it down by holding down the power button and start from shut off, it boots fine. It only happens when I "Restart". Shut down and start is okay. Then I thought it might be a problem with Yosemite so I then wiped out the machine again and installed Mavericks, but same problem. Then I went back even further and installed Mountain Lion, but same restart problem.
Thinking this is hard drive issue since it still have the stock 500GB drive, I went and bought Samsung 850 Evo SSD 250GB and reloaded Mavericks, but it's giving me the same issue. I tried zapping the PRAM and SMC reset, ran Disk Utility repair, hardware diagnostics, pretty much everything and turned out fine.
What could be the issue? Memory? GPU? Everything except the new SSD is stock Apple including the memory.
Again, to summarize the issue, I only get white screen after the startup Apple logo disappears when I RESTART, but it boots up fine when I shut down and start. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. I'd already tried everything to no avail.
No peripherals connected, and it was a completely fresh install of OSX Mavericks from App Store.
I believe this is hardware related issue but how do I find out without taking to the Genius bar?

  • MacBook Pro grey screen on startup, no apple logo.

    Hello,
Today I've been working on my MBP(2009) and everything worked perfectly, then I had to shut my MBP down. It happened with no problem. Next time when I've tried to start it up, only grey screen appeared with no Apple logo and it persists no matter how long I wait. Anybody who encountered the same issue?
    Thank you for your help.

I have followed this text, however I have no peripheral devices connected (no charger, no ethernet, no usb filled). They tell me to access the modes with keyboard shortcuts, but I cannot do that, when I cannot get over the grey screen at the beginning.

  • Macbook Pro stuck at white screen on startup.  HELP!

Right when i turn on my macbook pro, it plays the startup sound and gets stuck on the white screen. I can hear it running my cd right when the computer starts up. no matter what i do, i cannot get out of the white screen. it just stays there. same thing every reboot. Whats going on???
    HELP ME!

Hi, I had this exact same problem with my 15in mbp just before Christmas. I shut it down one afternoon, and then later in the day switched it back on. It wouldn't boot past the white/grey screen. It wouldn't even get as far as the apple symbol. I tried to start it up several times, but to no avail.
I called up apple support, and they had me run through various keyboard combinations at start up. Nothing worked. According to my observations and the apple telephone operator's knowledge, it was as if the keyboard wasn't booting up at all during the startup sequence, hence it was not responding to the key combinations. There was no fix available over the phone and the advice given to me was to take it to an Apple Store to have the keyboard replaced. Living in Prague Czech Rep, as I am, there is no apple store, only one reseller, which I resolved to take my mbp to the next day.
However, before the night was up, I decided to to do one more thing. According to my (less-than-Vulcan) logic, since I was taking it to be opened up, and knowing that since the dawn of time, hitting machines has seemed to give them a new lease of life, I decided to see what a sharp thump to the side of the computer might do. It wasn't overly forceful, just enough to make me feel satisfied. Would you believe it, the **** thing started up the next second I pushed the power button!
Well, I had many weeks of uninterrupted, blissful computer use until a few days ago. If you haven't heard, quite a few mbp users have been reporting cases of unresponsive keyboards and trackpads whilst running leopard, leading to kernel panics and I have now unwillingly joined their ranks. I am in no way an authority on computers (I think that's rather obvious from my repair technique mentioned above) but I have a suspicion that my little episode last Christmas is related to the current issue of the internal keyboard and trackpad becoming unresponsive, so I'd watch out for that in the future once you're able to get your laptop up and running again. There doesn't seem to be much information as to why this is happening, but for my part, I've found that it's more frequent if pressure is placed underneath the battery, and less frequent under Tiger than Leopard.
I really hope, you're able to get your mbp up and running again. I know how utterly frustrating it is when it's not working and you have no idea why.

  • When starting the macbook pro, the screen was flashing black and white, then to color to color, any suggestion to fixing this problem?

When i am starting the macbook pro, the screen was flashing black and white, and then to color to color, and the whole process repeat all over again, is there any suggestion in solving this, or is there no way to solve this and i need to bring it to the apple support?

Sounds as if you're having a problem with your GPU (graphics card). Only Apple can diagnose and fix this, so the best thing would be to take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP.

    Hi Maclover222,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you only see a white screen on your MacBook Pro, the steps in this article can help:

I'd recommend starting with these steps:

I have this white dot on my macbook pro display screen. It doesn't go away. Anybody knows what it is? Any suggestions?

Wow!  I think I had this same issue just last night.
I was cleaning my macbook pro retina on the outside.  Then I opened it up and was wiping dust off the monitor and I can't pinpoint exactly when, but the colors changed suddenly.  It looked super strange, it was like green halo's and it looked worse when looking at it at an angle.  Of course I took no pictures!!!  I was freaking out that my 2 grand laptop was busted and I somehow removed a protective film or something.
But I digress...  The image looked very green and spacey, it was almost a neat effect.  After about 5 minutes it started to look a little more digital though.  There were straight lines of this halo effect on the edges and top.  After about 10 minutes it turned into a predominate issue with the blacks on screen.  I could open a web browser and it was unnoticable on a white background.  After about 15 minutes, you could only barely see the green cloud effect if you looked at the monitor from an extreme angle.  After about 20 minutes, it was completely back to normal, I almost feel paranoid like I see a halo or something strange.  But I believe that might be all in my head now.
So yerp, lemme know what you guys figure out.
